CHANGEMENTS EN ÉDUCATION EN ONTARIO : MYTHE OU RÉALITÉ? Le gouvernement de l’Ontario veut réduire le financement de l’éducation publique de la maternelle à la 12 e année, en soutenant que cela n’aura aucun effet sur la qualité de l’éducation. Malheureusement, son plan repose sur des mythes.
MYTHE 1 La ministre de l’Éducation a affirmé « …qu’augmenter le nombre d’élèves par classe au secondaire les préparera à la réalité des études postsecondaires et au monde du travail… ». RÉALITÉ 1 La réalité est tout autre : l’augmentation de la moyenne d’élèves par classe à l’élémentaire et au secondaire signifie que nos élèves auront moins de choix de cours et moins de personnel enseignant pour répondre à leurs besoins.
MYTHE 2 La ministre de l’Éducation a déclaré « …qu’aucun membre du personnel enseignant ne perdrait son emploi à cause de la réforme en éducation… ». RÉALITÉ 2 Même le ministère de l’Éducation indique qu’il y aura près de 3 500 postes éliminés en enseignement d’ici 4 ans. Dans les faits, ce chiffre sera probablement beaucoup plus élevé.
MYTHE 3 Le premier ministre Ford a déclaré que le système d’éducation en Ontario est en crise. Le 1 er juin dernier, un incendie sur le Chemin du Lac a complètement détruit une maison et un garage. « C’est une perte totale, a indiqué au journal Vision Mario Villeneuve, chef adjoint du Service des incendies de Clarence- Rockland. On a répondu à l’appel à 5 h 45, le samedi matin. » À leur arrivée, les pompiers ont déterminé que le locataire qui habitait la résidence ne se trouvait pas sur les lieux. La cause de l’incendie n’a pas encore été déterminée. « Déterminer la cause de l’incendie est plus difficile dans des cas de perte totale, comme celle-ci », a expliqué M. Lieutenant-General Elizabeth Dowdswell stopped in Rockland on May 23, marking the first time such an official visited the area. “We are honored to have you here today,” said Clarence-Rockland mayor Guy Desjardins. Mayor Desjardins gave Dowdswell the key to the City as well a framed photograph of City Hall. “You are always welcome here,” he told the Lieutenant-General. Dowdswell stopped by the Très-Sainte Trinité church, where she was welcomed by hundreds of local students. She then stopped at Rockland District High School and Rockland Manor, before making her way to the St-Albert Cheese Factory. STRONG WINDS DAMAGE PROPERTIES IN AREA
Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell visited Rockland District High School on May 30, for a special event that celebrated Indigenous culture and the value of reconciliation. Dowdeswell addressed the school population during an assembly that saw Indigenous dancers, a First Nations rendition of O Canada and gifts to the Lieutenant Governor from First Nations representatives. Performances were by Ojibway Cree dancer Randy Kakegamick, who did the grass dance, and Southern Tutchone dancer Marissa Mills, who did the jingle dance. Métis Knowledge Keeper Candace Lloyd presented Dowdeswell with a traditional Métis sash, while Algonquin Danka Brewer gifted her with a bottle of maple syrup. While a tornado struck a neighbourhood in nearby Orleans last Sunday June 2, damaging several houses and parks, accompanying winds caused important damages to properties on Baseline Road (pictured). A tornado warning had been issued a few minutes earlier by Environment Canada warning area residents of the potential threat that ended up striking Orleans. The large funnel could be seen from as far away as Rockland and led to the temporary closure of parts of Highway 17/174. Mario Villeneuve, Deputy Fire Chief for Clarence- Rockland’s Fire Services, explained that the City has an Emergency Plan in case of disasters. “It’s one plan for several disasters,” he said. “If there ever was a tornado in Clarence-Rockland, we would activate our plan.” —photo Francis Racine

Deux arrestations pour conduite avec facultés affaiblies ont récemment été faites à Alfred-Plantagenet. Salim Mohamed, 65 ans, d’Ottawa, a été arrêté sur la rue Saint-Philippe, à Alfred, le 11 mai. Lorsqu’un agent de la PPO a intercepté le conducteur, celui-ci a d’abord présenté une fausse pièce d’identité et n’a pas été en mesure de fournir son permis de conduire. M. Salim Mohamed a été accusé, entre autres, de conduite avec facultés affaiblies, de conduite sous suspension, de conduite avec alcool accessible dans le véhicule, de possession illégale d’alcool et de cigarettes sans nom. Le véhicule de M. Salim Mohamed a été saisi pour une période de 45 jours et son permis a été suspendu pendant 90 jours supplémentaires. Il a été détenu en attendant son audience à la cour de L’Orignal. Claudia Malboeuf, 25 ans, d’Alfred- Plantagenet, a été arrêtée et accusée de conduite avec facultés affaiblies le 6 avril sur la route de comté 17 dans Alfred-Plantagenet. Father’s Day lineup: a day dedicated to Dad
The days of men “babysitting” their own children are a thing of the past. Today’s fathers are more nurturing andmore likely to contribute to child care and housework than ever before. Starting when their kids are first born, mo- dern dads are, in fact, more involved in rea- ring their children than their fathers and grandfathers were. As recently as the 1970s, it was rare for a man to be present when his child was born. Now it’s uncom- mon for a dad to not be in the delivery roomwhen his child com es into the world. The trend of fathers playing active roles in their kids’ lives continues throughout childhood, and today’s fathers spendmore time caring for their kids. One study found that fathers from 11 wealthy western countries spent about an hour a day on child care activities in 2012, but that dads
in 1965 spent an average of just 16 minutes a day actively parenting.
Contemporary fathers arealsomore likely to contribute to household chores than pre- vious generations were. On average, Cana- dian fathers do two-and-a-half hours of housework a day, compared to two hours a day in 1986. One specific task in particular that men have embraced is preparing family meals. The amount of fathers who cook regularly has nearly doubled since 1986, rising from 29 to 59 per cent. When men take on a more active role in parenting, their kids benefit. Studies show that children with involved dads perform better academically, have higher self- esteem and are less likely to have troubles with the law later in life..

MORNING Breakfast in bed is the perfect way to kick off Father’s Day. Older kids can help prepare and serve the meal, and little ones can deco- rate the serving tray or table. Excellent ser- vice is mandatory on such an important day, so everyone will need to be on their best behaviour. AFTERNOON If he loves his car almost as much as he loves his kids, treat him to a car wash at home. Once the car is looking shiny and new, take a ride to the activity of Dad’s choice. The whole family is sure to enjoy whatever he picks, whether it’s mini-golf, the ice cream shop or the park. NIGHT End the day with a movie marathon at home. Let Dad decide what you watch and nosh on. If he loves Mexican food, make nachos. If he appreciates the classic movie snacks, you can’t go wrong with buttery popcorn. And don’t forget to pick up his favourite candy so he can satisfy his sweet tooth.

Plusieurs élèves de l’école du Rosaire, de Saint-Pascal Baylon, se sont illustrés comme Génies de la forêt le 2 juin dernier, lors de la troisième édition d’un programme de jeux en forêt, inauguré en 2011 par Boisés Est et la Maison Tucker. Le Regroupement des Scouts 64e de Clarence-Rockland a récemment remis huit contenants remplis de languettes de canettes à un jeune garçon de cinq ans. Celui-ci s’est donné comme mission d’amasser le plus de languettes possible, afin d’en faire don à un organisme qui combat le cancer. « En tant que louveteaux, nous en avons fait un défi durant notre saison, a fait valoir Manon Quesnel, représentante du groupe. Pour célébrer la Journée du cheval au Canada, un groupe d’amoureux de chevaux de la région a formé une caravane de neuf charrettes et d’un cavalier, le 1er juin dernier. Ils ont rendu visite aux résidents de l’Oasis, rue Saint-Jean à Rockland. Et c’est sur le terrain personnel de la cuisinière de l’Oasis, Viviane Guibord, qu’ils se sont arrêtés, tout juste à côté de la Résidence. Plusieurs personnes âgées s’y sont rendus afin de caresser les canassons. Plus tôt dans la journée, le groupe est allé au Circle Saddlery, rue Caron. La 44 e édition du souper de homards du Club Optimiste de Rockland, qui avait lieu le 1 er juin dernier à l’aréna Jean-Marc Lalonde, a accueilli plus de 890 participants. Parmi les faits saillants de la soirée, notons que le prix d’entrée, sois un iPad (Wi-Fi, 128 Go), commandité par BDO, a été remis à Kevin Scharfe, de la part de Pierre Bourgon, associé chez BDO. Un tirage 50/50 a permis à Randy Bloom de Gatineau de gagner la somme de 1630 $. « Ce sont les membres, les bénévoles, les commanditaires et les fournisseurs qui rendent cette soirée possible », a fait valoir le président du Club Optimiste, Denis Vaillancourt.
