Ça bouge à la Ville Alors qu’on assiste à des coupures de postes à la direction, trois embauches ont eu lieu au Service des incendies de la Ville, soit deux pompiers et un agent de commu- nication. En ce qui concerne les pompiers, un poste était disponible depuis 2011 et l’autre depuis le début de l’année 2014. Ce manque de personnel a entraîné des heures supplémentaires au sein du dé- partement. «Le budget est quand même demeuré à l’intérieur des limites car même s’il y avait du temps supplémentaire il y avait moins de temps plein», a expliqué le directeur du service, Ghislain Pigeon. Cette partie s’élève à environ 1,5 mil- lion par année. Les deux salaires sont de l’ordre de 50 000$ à 55 000$ pour chacun des nouveaux pompiers qui sont au dé- but de la hiérarchie. Ainsi, le nombre de pompiers est à nouveau à cinq hommes. En même temps que des décisions se prennent en vitesse grand V, le journal a été informé de la suspension avec solde du directeur de la voirie, Michel Trudel, pour des accusations de harcèlement. Ce fait n’est pas con!rmé par le Conseil qui refuse de commenter ce type d’information qui relève du huis clos, mais la nouvelle fait pour ainsi dire !gure de secret de polichi- nelle. HAWKESBURY | La Ville de Hawkesbury continue d’imposer son régime minceur à l’appareil administratif. Après le directeur général, Jean-Yves Carrier, il y a moins d’une semaine, c’était au tour de la di- rectrice du développement économique, Anne Leduc et du directeur des travaux publics, Ken Witzel, d’être remerciés mer- credi matin. «Ils n’ont pas été congédiés, leur poste a été aboli», a précisé le conseiller municipal Michel Thibodeau, en con!rmant que la décision a été prise à huis clos, mardi soir, lors de la réunion extraordinaire. Ce dernier n’indique pas cependant si le vote est passé à l’unanimité. Le conseiller Pierre Ouellet était par ailleurs absent lors de cette ren- contre, une absence motivée a fait valoir M. Thibodeau. Par voie de communiqué, la Ville a, comme elle l’avait fait pour M. Carrier, expli- qué sa décision par des motifs de restructu- rations !nancières. «Ces deux postes, créés il y a un an et plus, ont été abolis par le conseil municipal. Ces postes ont été considérés excédentaires suite à notre restructuration administra- tive», peut-on y lire. Ainsi, la Ville espère faire des économies en épargnant sur les salaires. Celui de M. During the week of December 1 to December 8, Hawkesbury OPP o!cers re- sponded to 203 occurrences. Two break and enter instances were reported. Five incidents of assault and four incidents of theft were reported and there was one impaired driving related incident. Out of these 203 occurrences, 28 were con- cluded with charges.

Impaired Driving
At 1:00 a.m. on December 6, OPP o!cers intercepted a 2001 Toyota Echo trave- ling on Highway 17 at the Highway 34 overpass in the Champlain Township. O!- cers had reason to believe the driver had consumed alcohol. The driver, 27-year-old Guillaume Auclair, was arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a substance believed to be cocaine. Auclair was charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with section 254 (5) - Fail or Refuse to Provide Sample 254(3) alcohol/blood. He was also char- ged under Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with section 4(1) Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Cocaine. Auclair was later released with promise to appear in L’Orignal court January 7, 2015. A break and enter was reported at a Dollard Street residence in Hawkesbury in the early morning of December 2. The resident heard a noise and saw a man "eeing the scene in a dark coloured van. The investigation revealed that someone gained access to the garage of the residence by breaking in a door. Various hand tools and power tools were stolen from the garage estimated at approximately $1,900. The matter is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Jonathan Bouchard at the Hawkesbury OPP at 613-632-2729 or 1-888- 310-1122. A break and enter was reported at the Roxy’s Place snack bar on December 5 at 202 Main Street West in Hawkesbury. The investigation revealed that someone gained access to the business by breaking in through a window earlier that mor- ning. A woman was seen earlier that morning leaving the restaurant with a bicycle hauling a bike trailer. She was wearing a long black jacket, a black hat, grey scarf covering her face, gray mittens and gray winter boots. Four Coca-Cola frames, two Coca-Cola tins and some food were stolen from the restaurant. The woman was seen walking away heading east on Main Street. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Constable Marc-André Desjardins at the Hawkesbury OPP at 613-632-2729 or 1-888-310-1122. Hawkesbury OPP Constables intercepted a vehicle on Du Chenail Boulevard in the early morning of Sunday, November 23, 2014. The tra!c stop investigation revealed that the driver had stolen the vehicle, which was a grey 2002 Nissan Sen- tra. The driver, 29-year-old Julie Senecal of Brownsburg-Chatham, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with section 334(b) Theft Under $5,000 of a Motor Vehicle and section 733.1(1) Fail to Comply with Probation Order. Police have a grocery store burglary case in St-Isidore in The Nation Municipality where the target was any computer-type items on the premises. The Fred Agri-Mart was broken into sometime overnight between Nov. 24 and Nov. 25. Entry was through a window. Inside the o!ce area was ransacked and several computer items taken. Mis- sing are a black Lancer laptop computer, a 20-inch screen monitor, and an HP lap- top, an HP Omni 100 personal computer, 100-052. L’entreprise Tekpro a amorcé la démolition de l’imposante résidence du 360 de la rue Front Ouest, à L’Orignal, qui a été ravagée par les !ammes le 19 septembre dernier. Une trentaine de pompiers de cinq départements di"érents avaient alors combattu le brasier, qui avait pris naissance dans le grenier de la résidence de 8000 pieds carrés. Les pompiers avaient dû percer plusieurs trous de ventilation lors de l’incendie et une partie du toit de la résidence s’est même e"ondrée. Selon Tekpro, la démolition prendra quelques jours en raison de la grandeur du bâtiment. À noter qu’une autre maison détruite par le feu en septembre, sise au 760, rue McGill à Hawkesbury, a également été démolie au cours des dernières semaines. Aucun locataire n’avait des assurances en règle au moment de cet incendie et les dégâts d’eau causés par l’intervention ont rendu l’immeuble invivable. (SL)

Name change for Grenville-sur-la Rouge?
In 2014, the new council and the adminis- trators decided that it would be bene"cial for the municipality to focus on promoting the natural assets and beauty of the region through a revived and more upbeat brand image. Dropping the Grenville name would also help forge a new identi"cation and truly separate the municipality from the Vil- lage of Grenville. “In our opinion, the Red River is the top tourism and recreation attraction in the region and we just completed a public consultation on the vocation of the Rouge corridor,” added Jean-François Bertrand. “The municipality wants to review and mo- dernize its image and it is essential to exa- mine the subject of the name before doing anything.” The municipality would like to exploit the new name to its advantage and groom its economical development and promotion around it in 2015. While nothing is set in stone and citizens will have the opportu- nity to discuss the implication of the name change, the municipality thinks it would be a huge leap forward for recognition and promotion. “We want to turn the page and launch a new image to attract investors and contrac- tors”, concluded the general director.“When dealing with the government and other organizations, we still hear about the pro-

GRENVILLE-SUR-LA-ROUGE | At its Decem- ber 9 Grenville-sur-la-Rouge municipal meeting, council announced that it will go forward with the procedure to o!cially change the name of the town to Munici- palité de la Rouge. «A request for the name change will be sent to the Minister of Municipal A!airs and Land Occupancy”, said general director and secretary treasurer, Jean-François Bertrand. “Right now, we’re not changing the name per se, but only proposing a name change to the Commission de toponymie, which will examine the case. Un après-midi magique à Grenville

They’re back! The Valoris Christmas Elves Campaign is on again. The regional social service agency has helped make Christ- mas a little cheerier for children and youth in Prescott-Russell for more than two decades with its annual Christmas Elves project. Christmas trees are set up in every Valoris service centre throughout Prescott and Russell counties and also in several businesses that help support the campaign. Residents are invited to choose an ornament from one of the trees, buy a gift for the child or teen whose !rst name goes with the ornament, and bring that gift back to the local Valoris service centre for deposit and later placement with the child. GRENVILLE | Près d’une centaine d’enfants étaient de la fête pour le Noël des jeunes à Grenville, dimanche dernier. Avec tous ces jeunes et leurs parents, le Club Optimiste de Grenville et Districts en charge de l’événement a bien dû servir près de 300 dîners dans la salle de la Maison des jeunes, décorée et lumineuse pour l’occa- sion. Comme à chaque année, l’activité visait principalement à rendre les enfants de la région heureux, en cette période des Fêtes. «Ici, tout le monde est égal, les pauvres comme les riches. Tout le monde est bien- venue et chaque enfant repart d’ici avec un cadeau», expliquait la trésorière du Club Optimiste, Denise Rochon. Mme Rochon et son époux, Paul, qui est aussi le président du Club, avaient invité des dignitaires des Optimistes pour parta- ger ce moment. Le député provincial Yves Saint-Denis était aussi des convives et le Club n’a pas eu assez de merci pour lui dire comment sa contribution a été appréciée puisqu’elle a permis d’engager une troupe professionnelle pour présenter un magni- !que spectacle, L’école des lutins de la Compagnie Ouistiti. Les lutins, Pommette des Neiges et Luna trace d’étoiles, ont eu beaucoup de succès et la fascination se lisait indubitablement sur les petits visages

Braving the cold for the Vankleek Hill Christmas Parade

People came out in droves to witness the Vankleek Hill (VKH) Christmas Parade of Lights. Approximately a dozen !oats from local schools and businesses as well as the VKH Cadets and Scouts were all lit up for the occasion. The Grinch took part in the parade atop the Pleasant Corners Public School

Kids from St. Jude’s Catholic Elementary School were geared up to be part of the parade. The children had a blast on a very cold evening.
The Vankleek Hill Cub Scouts were staying warm on their !oat with a camp"re. Parents and Scout leaders were on hand to make sure the cubs stayed warm and safe.

Always remember that no ice is without risk and you need to use caution when travelling on ice. Be safe on the ice this winter
The Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Po- lice would like to remind the public to use caution if you choose to venture out onto the ice. Even though there is ice on some lakes and rivers in the area, not every lake is the same and varying winter weather conditions and temperatures can change ice conditions quickly. Always check the ice in several places before travelling onto it, wear a "oatation suit, carry ice picks and, if you go onto to the ice, be prepared to rescue yourself. If you are travelling in a group, keep good spacing so that if one person goes into the water, no one else will. If you are walking or ice #shing, you will require at least four inches of new clear hard ice for one person. If you are on a snowmobile or ATV, you will require at least 5 inches of new hard clear ice for one person. If you are in a vehicle or small pickup truck, you will require at least 8-12 inches of clear hard new ice.

The 2015 Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Calendar is available for pickup at various locations throughout the region. The third edition of the annual trail promotional product is a joint ven- ture between the Barnyard Studio in Cla- rence-Rockland and the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Association. The photos gracing the calendar’s pages are all from local photographers working through the studio as part of its photography ins- truction program. The photos highlight both particular sections of the trail and the various recreational activities it sup- ports. Copies of the calendar are available in many locations, including, in Alfred, Cakes, the Alfred-Plantagenet municipal o!ce, Carrière et Poirier and the Tourisme Prescott-Russell Tourism, in Hawkesbury, Vent et fête, the Town of Hawkesbury mu- nicipal o!ce, and Développement éco- nomique in Ste-Anne-de-Prescott.
