Lagan College Northern Ireland’s First Planned Integrated School

Dear P7 students and families, Welcome to Lagan College. We are delighted that you are interested in finding out more about our integrated, inclusive and all ability school in south Belfast. We were founded over 40 years ago in a little Scout Hut beside the River Lagan. We are a family school, where students, regardless of gender, ability or religion, work together. One of our main strengths has been that students, staff, parents and the Board of Governors have a shared sense of purpose to be, intentionally integrated and peace makers. We are committed to learning excellence and providing the ‘best’ possible education in all senses of the word for every student. We endeavour to help each child to reach their academic and personal potential. We hope that this prospectus provides you with a sense of our integrated school community and the wide range of learning activities and opportunities that you can experience at Lagan College. We are very fortunate to have received new school facilities in 2013, which greatly enhanced the learning experience for our students. Our state of the art, facilities includes 2 Mac suites, a fitness centre, a recording studio and impressive library and study spaces. In January 2023 we will be officially opening our new Chaplaincy and Wellbeing Centre at the heart of our school. The experience at Lagan College spans from Year 8 to Sixth Form and we are extremely proud of our students who move forward to a range of exciting learning pathways at university, further education and in employment. We hope that you will consider becoming part of our Lagan College family in 2023, as we move forward into an exciting decade, as the flagship of integrated education in Northern Ireland. Mrs Amanda McNamee MBE WELCOME

STUDENT LEADERS

Sixth Form Student Leadership Our Sixth Form students are student leaders and act in a mentoring role to support our new Year 8 students and ensure that they settle into life at Lagan College. The Sixth Form students can be identified by their green blazers and are affectionately known as the ‘jolly green giants.’ Each Year 8 class has a number of Sixth Form students assigned to them from day one, which enables our Senior students to get to know the Junior students personally. In addition, we have a Senior Prefect team who lead and organise many events in the College throughout the year and Bus Prefects, who ensure that our younger students feel safe and secure when travelling to and from school. Sixth Form students are also delighted to mentor individual Year 8 students if need be, to offer further reassurance and friendship in the early weeks of starting ‘big’ school and acting as wellbeing and subject mentors.

Mirran Morrison - Head Girl Hello P7s, my name is Mirran Morrison and I am the Head Girl of Lagan College. I attended Hazelwood Integrated Primary School and chose to come to Lagan College due to its incredible opportunities and amazing teachers! As the only student from my primary school, I was nervous to join such a large secondary school, however, I was immediately welcomed into the Lagan family! I am currently studying 3 A levels in Sociology, Religion and Drama (having completed A/S Biology last year). I too am hoping to go to Cambridge to become a theologian focusing on equality, inclusion, and human rights law. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at Lagan. From the outset, I got involved in clubs and societies including, Music Technology and Production Club; Music Theory Club; Debate Club; Public Speaking Club; Science Club; Drama Club; and Choir! This year, I took part in my final school drama production entitled, ‘Showstoppers.’ I have been in five productions to date with Mr Gray and Miss Hughes. I have also been committed to the work of the QSA Committee, through which we achieved the Cara Friend Platinum Charter for LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Practice, which I am very proud of. I wish you all the best for your big school experience and encourage you to get involved and choose somewhere that, like me, you will feel happy in and a part of.

Chris Cassells - Head Boy My name is Chris Cassells and I am Head Boy of Lagan College. I am currently studying four A Levels in Geography, History, Physics and Maths and I hope to go on to Oxbridge to study Geography as I am enthusiastic about the world of transport and aviation. I came to Lagan from Millennium Integrated Primary School. Despite pressure from those around me to go to a traditional grammar school, I chose Lagan due to the warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere I experienced here on Open Day. This is a decision I haven’t regretted for a single minute. I have now enjoyed six and a half happy years at Lagan, where I have developed many lifelong friendships with a diverse range of people, I may never have otherwise come into contact with, coming from a small village in rural County Down. Our amazing teachers and support staff have always been really supportive to help me reach my full academic potential, whilst also looking out for the well-being of me and my classmates. However, what makes Lagan really special is our fantastic range of extra-curricular clubs, meaning there will be something for everyone! I have personally enjoyed playing in the school orchestra and, despite never being a fan of sport before Lagan, I even came to enjoy PE! Last year was a very positive year for us, as we celebrated our 40th anniversary year as Northern Ireland’s first ever integrated, all ability school. The tenacity of those founding parents and pupils to battle through adversity to setup this school back in 1981 continues to inspire us all to help our school thrive, and I hope it will inspire you to want to join our Lagan family and be part of that story too!

INTEGRATED ETHOS AND VALUES

THE COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT

To educate to the highest standards the daughters and sons of Catholics, Protestants and others of goodwill, of all abilities, together

THE COLLEGE MOTTO Ut Sint Unum (That they may be one, John 17:22) As members of a Christian School founded in the spirit of Christ’s prayer ‘that they may be one’, Parents, Teachers, Chaplains, Governors and Friends of Lagan College agree: to co-operate in the education of their children; to do together all that they can;

to do apart only those things which they may not do together; to support each other in cherishing their different traditions for the enrichment of the life of their community, and to welcome all who wish to share in this work.

They declare that this commitment in no way weakens any ties and responsibilities which they may have to different churches.

“The pupils demonstrated high levels of respect for all and commitment to the service of others. The pupils acknowledged the very good opportunities to develop their leadership skills and the extensive range of extra-curriular and enrichment activities, which develop well their personal and social skills.” ETI Inspection 2019

AIMS OF LAGAN COLLEGE Founded in 1981 with 28 students, Lagan College was Northern Ireland’s first planned integrated school. Today, there are over 1452 students. The College is the flagship of integrated education. The central aim of Governors, Principal and staff is to educate together to the highest standards Catholics, Protestants and those of other religious beliefs or none. The College is a Christian school for the whole family which is open to boys and girls of all abilities. It is a day school for students aged 11-18 which is grounded in two central beliefs: firstly, that it is both permissible and desirable for Catholics and Protestants and others to be educated together under the same roof; and secondly, that it is unnecessary and damaging to the community for children of the same family to be labelled as ‘successes’ or ‘failures’ at the age of eleven and educated apart in segregated schools. HIGHER/GRAMMAR STREAM

ALL ABILITY 65% of our annual intake of students enter without any reference to their academic ability (130 places). The details are explained in the College’s Admissions Policy and Criteria.

LEARNING PACED CLASSROOMS Our 200 Year 8 students are placed in one of eight ‘learning paced’ classes, to suit their individual level of academic ability using any family and primary school information available pre-entry. Ability in English informs the ‘learning paced’ class that your son/daughter will be placed in for the majority of subjects, with the exception of Maths, which is a separate ‘learning paced’ class. We have high expectations of all the children in our care and challenge our students to achieve their full potential at Lagan College.

35% of our annual intake of students is selected on the basis of academic ability (70 places). These students are selected as if they were applying to a grammar school. Students will have the same academic opportunities afforded to them as in any grammar school. Details are explained in our College’s Admissions Policy and Criteria.

Chaplaincy and Wellbeing at the Heart of the College

INTEGRATED CHRISTIAN ETHOS IN LAGAN COLLEGE Our integrated Christian ethos is expressed in the commitment to be one community who learns and worships together based on the principles of equality, respect, reconciliation and service to others. One of the ways that this is expressed is through the daily example and work of the joint Chaplaincy. A Protestant and a Catholic Chaplain work together in leading shared assemblies, providing denominational and pastoral support for staff, students and their families, and working with students and staff for peace and justice in the community and wider world. The Chaplains plan and co-ordinate school assemblies, which provide opportunities to explore our differences and discover all that we share in common. Primarily, assembly themes follow the Christian year, whilst referring to festivals of other faith traditions and making connections with events and situations in Northern Ireland and the wider world. Special, longer assemblies are held to celebrate Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas, Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. The Chaplains care for the needs of all students of Lagan College, of all denominations and faiths and of none. This includes supporting students and their families when specific denominational needs arise. For example, preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is organised each year by the Catholic Chaplain. The Chaplains coordinate their efforts with the pastoral teams in the school. They provide a ‘drop in’ facility for all students each day, during break and lunch times. Students can also make appointments with the Chaplains at other times when they need to talk issues through in a confidential, caring environment, especially at times of bereavement or family crisis. The Chaplaincy also works in partnership with the Religious Education Department, organising events and activities to support the curriculum. For example, the Chaplains organise visits to local churches of different denominations for Year 8 and an annual Year 11 Conference. They also co-ordinate the Mediation Programme and support students to live out our values of respect, equality, service and reconciliation. In addition, the Chaplains organize and facilitate a range of events and guest speakers throughout the year, that aim to provide space for dialogue, for learning about the experience of others and for reflecting on our shared experience of peace building and commitment to reconciliation as a Cross of Nails Community.

PARENTS’ COUNCIL

ASSEMBLIES AND WORSHIP As a Christian community, the College meets to worship together. Students and staff have the opportunity to take part in appropriate acts of worship at assemblies and to express their sense of belonging. Worship includes whole-school and year assemblies and also special assemblies which celebrate the main festivals and seasons of the Christian calendar. Other assemblies explore themes important to the nature of the College, such as peace, reconciliation and justice, concern for others, responsibility for the developing world and Christian unity. In describing itself as a Christian Integrated school, Lagan College means that it strives to be a community of learning where: • All are committed to the principles of equality, respect, reconciliation and service to others. • Each person is regarded as having a unique value which deserves respect and people of all faiths and none are welcomed. • Roman Catholic and Protestant Chaplains provide for the denominational and spiritual care of students whose parents request it. • Religious Education is at the core of the curriculum with parity of esteem and provision with other subjects. • There is a daily act of worship. • The main festivals are celebrated in Christian and other traditions. There is commitment to ensuring that respect for truth, justice and the pursuit of peace-making is reflected in relationships between students, parents and teachers and in relationships between the school community and the wider community. • The College welcomes children of parents of good-will who are being brought up in other religious traditions or none. • An essential part of an integrated education is understanding of different religious beliefs and practices, regardless of one’s own personal beliefs. • Parents are encouraged to see the positive benefits from allowing their children to have the opportunity of learning for themselves through R.E. and assemblies. • RE is studied as a core subject by all students, however parents, of course, have the right in law to withdraw their child from Religious Education or from any act of worship. • If parents wish to exercise the right of withdrawal they should write to the Principal. • There is a daily act of worship or reflection depending on your custom.

STUDENTS’ COUNCIL A very active system of parental input exists at Lagan College through the auspices of the Parents’ Council. Wide representation is sought from parents of all traditions and across all year groups, to reflect the full diversity of an integrated college. The focus of the Parents’ Council is to support the home to school relationship and to offer the opportunity to widen friendships and understanding amongst the parents of students at the College. Active participation is sought and valued from all parents. The Parents’ Council has been instrumental in raising funds for charity and learning programmes and organised fun, community events. Further information and contact details can be obtained from the College office.

The Students’ Council enables the opinion and views of all our students to be heard and valued. Representatives from Years 8-14 reside on the Students’ Council which

meets on a monthly basis and is Chaired by the Head Boy and Head Girl of Lagan College. Students are consulted on matters relating to school development work, teaching & learning and student health & wellbeing. The Council also discusses

and highlights issues of local and global concern. It is important that all our young people feel that they are part of our school and can contribute and actively engage in school life.

HISTORY

LIKE THE PARABLE OF THE MUSTARD SEED, BIG THINGS HAVE SMALL BEGININGS. Such was the case with Lagan College. Set against the troubles in the 1970s, a group of Catholic and Protestant parents came together as part of the All Children Together Movement to seek a new way of educating their children together.

In September 1981 Northern Ireland’s first integrated, all ability, post primary school was opened. Lagan College opened its doors in the now legendary scout hall at Ardnavally in South Belfast. There were 28 students, 14 Catholic and 14 Protestant, a Principal, Sheila Greenfield, one full time and five part-time teachers.

Grant Maintained status was granted to the College in 1984. As the school intake grew, accommodation was sought in the Castlereagh hillside before a permanent home for the College was eventually found at Lisnabreeny, this time thanks to the hospitality of the National Trust. In 2003 Lagan College sought to be considered for a new build programme under the Department of Education’s Private Finance initiative. After many years in the planning, Education Minister Catriona Ruane confirmed, that permission had been granted on 14th April 2011 to complete the permanent buildings on the Lisnabreeny site. On 17th June 2013 phase one commencement was completed providing the College with state of the art facilities fit for the 21st Century, with phase 2 completed in September 2014 with the opening of the new grass pitch. In 2016 we launched our Heritage Trail, in 2018 we extended our Sixth Form provision to 300 places and in 2023 we are opening our new Chaplaincy and Wellbeing Centre at the heart of our school. The students’ learning potential has been enhanced by signature spaces that boast of a new library, with panoramic views of the countryside, an Internet cafe, 11 e-learning suites, a new Music building, 2 Dance/ Drama studios, a well resourced Sixth Form study space and modern well equipped general classrooms. The build programme has also enabled the College to fully refurbish the existing Technology and Breeny main buildings. The school is now a complete circle - inclusive of all and providing a warm, safe and pleasant learning environment for staff and students. At the heart of the school is the social heart, inclusive of the stunning library and Chaplaincy led by our joint Chaplains representing the two major faith traditions. The vision of the founding parents and students has finally been realised with a permanent Lagan College for many generations to come. Today Lagan College is a beacon of hope to others, showcasing that the integration of young people does work and all children can play, learn and grow together. We look forward to marking the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement together in April.

School Production of “Showstoppers” The College has, as its top priority, the wellbeing of all its students. All staff have pastoral responsibilities for the social, moral, academic and spiritual development of the students in their care. To achieve this end, teachers, in their role as Form Tutors, are given specific pastoral responsibility for a group of 20 –30 students in their Form Class. They are members of a team consisting of all the Form Tutors of the same year group under the leadership of a Year Head. The Year Heads in turn form a team under the Heads of School and Vice Principal of Pastoral Care. The Form Tutors will care for the students in their Form Class through daily contact. They should be the first person to whom a student will turn for help or advice, although it may be necessary to refer a particular matter to the Head of Year, or the Vice Principal of Pastoral Care, Chaplain, Head of Additional Educational Needs or one of the schools six teachers trained as Child Protection Co-ordinators. YEAR 8 Good communication and partnership between home and school is encouraged from the beginning. Parents and students starting in September visit the College in June and are introduced to the Head of Year 8 and their child’s Form Tutor. Parents also have a meeting with their child’s Form Tutor early in the first term of Year 8. The Year Head is usually a parent’s first point of contact if there is a concern. A Form Tutor will normally remain with a class as they progress through the school. In order to develop the diverse talents of our students, teaching classes are normally banded in groups of similar ability. There are high expectations of all students and procedures are kept under constant review with the aim of enabling everyone to develop his or her full potential. CHILD PROTECTION The College has a primary responsibility for the care, welfare and safety of all in our charge. The purpose of our Child Protection Procedures is to protect our students by ensuring that everyone who works in the College has clear guidance on the action which is required where abuse or neglect of a child is suspected or disclosed. Staff are vigilant at all times to the possibility of bullying occurring and will take immediate steps to stop it happening, to protect and reassure the victim and to change the behaviour of the bully. Lagan College operates a Child Protection Policy in line with the Department of Education guidelines. Copies are given to parents of all new students or are available on request from the College Office. Miss Collins (Vice Principal) is the Designated Teacher in charge of Child Protection and Safeguarding, Mrs McNamee (Principal), Mrs Carlisle (Vice Principal), Mrs Mulholland (Head of Senior School), Miss Wightman (Head of Junior School) and Mrs Grant (Head of Sixth Form) act as her deputies. PASTORAL CARE & WELLBEING

PASTORAL CARE ASSISTANT Lagan College employs a full time Pastoral Care Assistant who is located at the office adjacent to the student entrance. Her role is to support students pastorally - on a social and emotional level. She deals with a plethora of issues which range from transport arrangements to fostering friendships. SCHOOL MEDIC The College employs a full time school medic. The medic is available to assess children who have taken ill in school, if necessary. The medic may treat minor injuries that have occurred on the school property. He may administer simple medication, obtaining parental consent where appropriate. Children with additional educational needs are assessed in Year 8 and the medic, in communication with parents, is responsible for drafting their individual medical careplans. He is also involved in promoting health issues and is available for advice regarding these matters. The College formulates, implements and reviews regularly a range of health-related policies including Drugs Awareness, Relationships and Sexuality Education. COUNSELLING SERVICE Lagan College offers all students access to a counsellor from New Life Counselling and we have our own School Counsellor on site. Students may self refer to the service or be referred by a parent/carer or teacher. We appreciate that the best learning takes place when children feel safe, cared for and valued. LEARNING FOR LIFE AND WORK All our students have an opportunity to access Citizenship, Personal Development, Health Education, Employability and Careers. As our students grow and develop into young adults, we address issues such as Healthy Eating, Alcohol Awareness, Relationships, Drugs Awareness, Mental Health, Road Safety and Child Exploitation and Online Protection. It is vitally important that our students are fully prepared for life, work and learning beyond Lagan College. HAPPINESS, HEALTH AND PERSONAL WELLBEING Lagan College is a health promoting school. COLLEGE DINING UNIFORM

The College dining facilities include a Dining Hall, an Internet Café and a Bistro area. Hot and cold meals are served in all three areas by Lagan College Catering staff which operates a cashless system. There are arrangements for students, who are entitled to do so, to receive free school meals. The Bistro area is used by students who choose to bring a packed lunch or mix and match. The Dining Service staff hold a number of food of the world celebration days throughout the year, in support of diversity and inclusion. We also offer vegetarian and vegan options. In the Summer time students are permitted to eat at the picnic and bench areas outside.

The College is proud of its uniform. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to provide uniform as required. Acceptance of a place at the College implies support for the College’s policies on uniform. It is compulsory for students to wear the College uniform at all times during school hours, on journeys to and from the College and for official College functions. Our Uniform Policy was reviewed by the Students‘ Council in 2019. It may be noted that under Article 60 of the Education and Libraries Order 1986, the South Eastern and Belfast regions of the Education Authority operate a scheme for the assistance of parents whose circumstances make it difficult to provide the uniform prescribed by the school for their children.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY Attendance is a vital factor in academic achievement. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child’s attendance is as high as possible and that their child arrives on time – before 9.05am for Form Class. If a student is ill, a parent should phone the College on the first day of absence and a letter explaining the reason for the absence must be given to the student’s Form Tutor on the first day of return to school. Students must never leave the College premises at any time without the specific permission of the Head of Year, the Vice Principals or the Principal. Medical and dental appointments should be made outside school hours and family holidays should not be taken during term-time. These absences can place students at an educational disadvantage when they return to school. Given the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, time will not permit the teacher to cover the missed classwork in detail. Students are expected to behave appropriately at all times and display good manners, courtesy and the College’s core values of respect, equality, service and reconciliation. The school does not tolerate bullying of any sort be that racism, sectarianism, homophobic bullying, gender bias or ageism. We continue to implement our Positive Behaviour Policy and we are extremely proud of our students who are caring, thoughtful, kind and take seriously their role as ambassadors for the College. Lagan College’s Anti Bullying Policy and Positive Behaviour Policy are issued to all families. POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR Homework is an important reinforcement and continuation of work covered in class and is set regularly throughout the school. In the first year, homework should take 40 minutes to one hour each night. This increases to one and a half hours per night in Year 10 and two hours in the senior school. Parents are asked to contact the College if the amount of homework set appears to be either too much or too little for the student concerned. Students carry a Student Planner for the recording of homework. Two way communication between teachers and parents using the Homework Planner is encouraged and parents are expected to sign homeworks for students in Years 8 – 10. A Homework Policy is in operation which sets out clearly the roles of students, staff and parents with regard to homework. Copies are available on request. HOMEWORK

TEACHING AND LEARNING Lagan College encourages each individual to achieve their learning potential and experience success in all its forms be that in academic study, sporting achievement and extra curricular activities. Key Stage 3: Students in Years 8-10 follow a broad and balanced curriculum. We pride ourselves on offering a range of fun and active learning opportunities in and out of the classroom environment including a range of educational visits. Key Stage 4: In Years 11 and 12 students study up to 11 GCSEs including a core programme of GCSE English, Mathematics and R.E. Some students study English Literature and Further Mathematics. Students are then enabled to select other GCSE courses from a varied menu of General and Applied GCSEs and equivalents. Post 16 Studies: The majority of our students continue their academic or vocational studies into Sixth Form. The College has a highly successful record of placing students in universities and colleges in Ireland and the UK, as well as Further Education. A wide range of A-Level and Applied A-Level BTec and CTec courses are available. All students follow a Personal Development and a Careers Education programme inclusive of health education, study skills, careers and work experience.

STRETCHING THE MORE ABLE One of the priorities of the College is to ensure that our more able pupils are stretched to reach their full potential. Specific strategies include: * Providing extension activities in class. * Continually developing and sharing the College’s Learning Resources and e-Learning (ICT) facilities regarding extension activities. * Providing stocks of challenging activities and resources for the more able. * Encouraging independent research as part of homeworks and/or projects. * Giving extra reading material. * Organising external competitions and awards in, for example, the Sporting and business fields, public speaking, quizzes and debates. * Choosing, in exams, a particular module to ensure high achievement for the most able. * Enabling students to sit examinations, such as GCSEs, early. * Promoting Oxbridge entrance. * Promoting Nuffield Bursary. * Providing CEIAG & Work Experience opportunities to broaden a young person’s aspirations. * Providing opportunities with our partners in business, Pinsent Masons, Danske Bank & PWC. * Recognising and celebrating achievements.

LEARNING SUPPORT DEPARTMENT The Learning Support Department provides the framework for the whole school to assume responsibility for inclusion matters. The range of provisions made by the Learning Support Department ensure that students with additional learning needs make appropriate progress and fulfil their potential. It emphasises the statutory entitlement of students with additional learning needs to be included as full participants in the academic, pastoral and social life of the school. The Learning Support staff consists of four full-time teachers, part-time teachers and a number of Classroom Assistants. Learning Support involves a degree of whole class provision, in-class support and some withdrawal provision for both basic Literacy and Numeracy and Newcomer support. We are also in regular contact with a number of external agencies. The work which we endeavour to do is as a partnership between home and school. Meeting with students and parents and drawing up mutually agreed Education Plans is vital to assessing, monitoring and reviewing the progress of our students with additional learning needs. The Learning Support Department endeavours to support students to experience success in all aspects of school life.

DIVERSITY OF OPPORTUNITY As well as encouraging success in the academic field, we want our students to have as broad an experience as possible. Students are annually encouraged to participate in competitions and debates such as the Rotary Club, Young Enterprise and Crest Awards. We value the extensive learning that occurs beyond the classroom environment through opportunities such as Duke of Edinburgh Award and the vast range of extra-curricular activities offered.

AN INTEGRATED INTAKE Shane McDonagh Nancarrow – Year 8

Sergei Borisov – Year 8 When I first started Lagan, I was not very nervous because I had three brothers already there. My highlights are going on a school trip and getting a high score in Science. My favourite subjects are science and PE because in PE we are doing football and in Science I like it because I’m good at it. I have settled well into Lagan and I have a bunch of friends. Ivan Borisov – Year 10 When I first got a place at Lagan, I was very happy as I would be going with my brothers. I was still very nervous on my first day though. The staff at the school are all very kind and helpful. My favourite subjects are chemistry and maths as I have very nice teachers who help me whenever I need it. I am looking forward to going on the French trip and I hope to improve my French. Nikolai Borisov – Year 10 When I first attended Year 8 at Lagan College I was incredibly anxious as it was a large, unfamiliar environment, however, all the staff were incredibly friendly and kind so those feeling quickly vanished. I found friends and began to enjoy my new school. My favourite subjects are Art and Chemistry. Lockdown was difficult for me but my teachers were very helpful and I still managed to continue to learn. I am looking forward to choosing my GCSE subjects this year and joining Senior School. Maxim Borisov – Year 12 I was very pleased to have received a place at Lagan back when I was 11 and have enjoyed it ever since. My favourite things about it are my friends, whom I have known since Year 8 and my favourite subjects include Chemistry and Biology. I have always felt well supported by the teachers and staff here. Formerly attended St Joseph’s Primary School

Megan Mitchell – Year 10 I always wanted to come to Lagan as my older brother came here and talked about how amazing it was. Coming to Lagan I felt very welcomed as I had attended Camp Camilla (now Lagan Camp) during the summer. I made friends quickly and came to realise there was a space for everyone. I was keen to join the hockey team in Year 8 but due to Covid that was postponed until Year 9. I am now Vice Captain of the Under 14s team. Lagan has given me many opportunities like leading a face painting workshop at the Lagan Summer Camp. I particularly enjoy Art and Drama as I am very creative. I have had the chance to move up classes so I can learn to the best of my ability and the teacher and staff here have continued to look after us and give us what we need. I am also looking forward to attending the trip to Paris in June with my I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Lagan College. It has provided numerous opportunities for me to grow, experience and develop as a young person. I have been able to represent the school for the football team, in which I was captain, and for the cross-country team at district competitions. I have given speeches in front of hundreds of parents and students at prize events where I developed skills of public speaking and speech writing. In first year, I was able to go on a trip to Ganaway with the rest of my year which was an incredible experience and helped in getting to know my new friends. I joined Lagan in first year having known only two or three people, but that quickly changed with the help of the teachers and other welcoming students. Some of my favourite subjects would be PE, Maths and Chemistry where I am constantly learning and enjoying lessons thanks to great teachers in school. Lagan has treated me so well! Formerly attended Leadhill Primary School friends in French class. Noah Mitchell – Year 13

I transitioned into Lagan really well, whether that was because I had moved school before or it is the way Lagan is laid out. One of my highlights was moving between classes, as weird as that sounds, it is quite refreshing, especially if it is a double lesson. One of my favourite classes is Science because I find it very interesting and my teacher makes it fun. Tara McDonagh Nancarrow – Year 12 I’m very thankful that I am a student at Lagan College as I have experienced great moments and have made friendships that will last a lifetime. I have achieved things I didn’t think I could and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my teachers. I am glad I have my older brother Teelin to show me the way and give me guidance and I hope I can do the same for my little brother Shane as I hope he has as good an experience as Teelin and I did. When I first made the transition to secondary school, I was a little bit nervous, but I quickly settled in and felt proud to be a student at an excellent school. Teelin McDonagh Nancarrow – Year 14 As my time at Lagan College comes to an end, I look back at all the great opportunities and experiences this school has given me. I am grateful for the wide range of subjects Lagan offers, such as Sociology, which I thoroughly enjoy. Lagan has given me vast opportunities to explore different hobbies through their lunchtime and after school clubs such as, drama, basketball and art club. If you enjoy theatre, Lagan College is for you. Taking part in the school show every year from first year to now has been a true highlight. I am now trained in mediation and problem solving through the Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, which has been useful in and outside of school. The Dublin trip, which I took part in Year 8, allowed me to explore and understand more about the Irish culture. The transition from primary school to Lagan for me was easy, as it felt like an extension of primary school, with great pastoral care. Formerly attended Lough View Integrated Primary School

Mia Hehir – Year 8 I am the youngest member of my family to attend Lagan College. My three older brothers and twin sister attend too. Myself and my twin sister, Faye, were the only students from our primary school to get an opportunity to go to Lagan College so it was really nice to share a form class on the first morning. I believe we have the best form teacher. She is simply amazing, kind and full of information that has helped me feel very welcome in Lagan College. I wasn’t able to play hockey for my local team, so I was delighted to be offered an opportunity to play in the hockey team for Lagan. We did a training week during the summer holidays for both hockey and netball, it was really fun and we met lots of new faces that would turn out to be my best friends by the time we started school in September. Faye Hehir – Year 8 My first experience of Lagan College has been nothing but welcoming! All the teachers have been so kind and helpful. My first day was a little daunting until I met my form teacher and classmates where I was immediately put at ease. I have big brothers and a twin sister in the school so I had a rough idea of what to expect but it has definitely been better than anything I could have imagined. Moving from subject to subject really breaks up the day and makes the day fly in really fast. I especially enjoy netball and hockey and have used these clubs to integrate my friendships right across the school. My favourite subjects are the languages. My dad is a fluent Irish speaker and I have enjoyed the opportunity to practice my Irish learning with him. Alill Hehir – Year 10 I am currently in Year 10. My first experience of Lagan College was to attend the Open Day whilst I was still in primary school. I knew from this first visit that I was going to love it. I undertook crazy science experiments, made toaster tongs and ate great food in the Home Economics Department, all with the support from our fab, fun teachers. I then attended the Lagan College Summer Camp which allowed me the opportunity to get to know my way around the school before officially starting in September. I also got to make friends with some of the other new pupils. My favourite activity of the summer scheme was technology, where we were encouraged to get stuck in using the equipment. I would encourage anyone to take part in the Lagan Summer Camp and to also take part in after school activities as it really helps you to become involved in Lagan life. Finn Hehir – Year 13 I was a pretty shy child in primary school and was a little unsure about going to a big school like Lagan College, but if I could go back now and tell myself anything, I would say please don’t worry it’s really not that big! There are lots of lovely teachers and staff to help guide you to where you need to go. I am now in Year 13 and I have changed a lot. I am no longer shy and I put a lot of that down to the confidence gained from being part of Lagan and its encouraging ethos where everyone is included and all abilities are valued. Some of my favourite things about my school would be the friends for life I have made and the wonderful memories we have made together, the best of which was the ski trip to Italy. It was amazing! I think I fast tracked my beginner ski lessons to intermediate overnight. I have also enjoyed being part of the school rugby team and helping coach the younger students after school as part of my BTec Sport. I can’t imagine being at any other school and I am really enjoying my Sixth form studies. Formerly attended St Comgall’s Primary School

Eden Searle Year 8 My experience at Lagan so far has been really enjoyable. All of my teachers have been kind and helped my class and me to settle in. I really enjoy Geography and learning about all the different types of geography. I also really enjoyed learning all about 1066 in History. I have been on one trip so far, it was the team building day in September and even though it was raining all day I made new friends and had a really great time. The transition from primary school to Lagan was good. There are lots of people from my primary school, which meant that I already knew lots of people. I have made new friends from other schools too. I have really enjoyed playing hockey with the U12 girls and have made good friends with my team mates. I also joined the netball team to try it out and I really enjoy it! There are so many clubs. I also go to the Traditional music group, art, public speaking and music theory. Patrick Searle Year 11 During my four years at Lagan I have had many opportunities the school has opened up for me. In my first year we went to Ganaway Activity Centre and did loads of fun activities such as rock climbing, an adventure course and even a 100 foot zipline! I go to loads of after school clubs including sports, a Christian social group and public speaking club. Last year, I competed in a public speaking competition and came first in everything that I did. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my peers in public speaking and especially the teacher leading it, who is brilliant. Lagan can and will support you in everything and will help you to fit and settle into the school from the very start. Isaac Searle Year 12 I have really enjoyed my time so far at Lagan College and am looking forward to the next few years. My highlights are the sporting opportunities like basketball and Gaelic football and also that my teachers make lessons fun with practical activities. As the oldest sibling I joined not knowing many people because my main primary school friends didn’t go to Lagan. My teacher helped me with any questions I had about the changes in secondary school so it wasn’t ever daunting. My favourite subjects at GCSE are Maths, Geography, Physics and Chemistry. Every lesson makes me feel involved and the teachers push me to be the best I can and help me achieve good results. I am looking forward to the next few years of school

Destiny Ezeribe – Year 8 My first months at Lagan College have been fantastic! The teachers and staff have been super kind and helpful. My favourite subjects are Spanish, HE and PE. I was so excited to start learning a new language and I’ve already learnt so much. The best part of HE to me personally has to be making and eating the food we make, alongside learning new life skills. Everybody that I have met has been so nice and I have made so many new friends. I can’t wait to make even more memories As the years went by, my time at Lagan kept improving. One of my highlights was in Year 8 at the Ganaway trip when I went ziplining. Some subjects I really like are Art, Technology and Spanish as I find them fun and interesting. I really enjoy playing netball and playing matches with the team! The teachers here are fantastic and very helpful as they continually help me improve. I have had a great time at Lagan College so far but I know there will be many great opportunities to come as the years go by. in the years to come at Lagan! Fortunate Ezeribe – Year 11

CREATIVITY, ACTION, SERVICE (CAS)

CAS extra curricular activities are undertaken in each year of a student’s life in Lagan College. • Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of arts activities as well as the creativity students demonstrate in designing and implementing service projects. • Action can include not only participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in expeditions and in local or international projects. • Service encompasses a host of community and social service activities. Some examples include helping children with special needs, and visiting hospitals etc. In addition to participating in any of a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, provided by staff, students can get involved in activities outside school.

SPIRIT OF ENDEAVOUR

CAS ACTIVITIES Students personally keep track of their CAS record in their school planners. This allows for students to monitor their own progress. At the end of April each year, students are required to submit this record of all their CAS activities to their Form Tutor and in turn they receive a certificate of achievement. Year 8 students are encouraged to get involved and experience learning beyond the classroom which is an important dimension of our school life. The College has several dramatic productions annually in which a large number of students take part and has twice been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the National Theatre in London. Visits have been made to South Africa, Costa Rica, London, France, the United States and Spain.
