L’augmentation du salaire minimum en Ontario a été un sujet important au cours des dernières années pour les employeurs de l’Ontario, particulière- ment ceux de la région de Glengarry- Prescott-Russell (GPR) aux élections provinciales. Lors d’une table ronde organisée par la Compagnie d’édition André Paquette (EAP) le 17 mai dernier, les trois candidats qui avaient accepté notre invitation, le libéral Pierre Leroux, le libertarien Darcy Neal Don- nelly et la néo-démocrate Bonnie Jean-Louis ont fait valoir leurs perspectives sur divers enjeux, y compris l’augmentation du salaire minimum. Les candidats ont plus au moins convenu que l’augmentation du salaire minimum à 14 $ en janvier dernier, et dont l’augmenta- tion est prévue à 15 $ en janvier prochain, est nécessaire pour aider les travailleurs de la province. Leroux criticized both the previous Pro- gressive Conservative and NDP provincial governments for failure to invest enough in regular asset replacement for Ontario Hydro. One of the big challenges for the Liberal government, he said, is the cost of dealing with the existing aging hydro infrastructure. Jean-Louis argued that the NDP opposed the Liberal government’s decision to sell of part of Hydro One to the private sector.

Local operators of subsidized housing in the Prescott-Russell region will get a bit of extra financial compensation for their services. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) approved a recommendation from administration for a one-dollar increase, in the per diem subsidy that domiciliary hos- tel operators receive from the counties, for each person living in a designated subsidized housing unit. /JDPMF/PSNBOEBOE/PSNBOE5SFNCMBZ of the Prescott-Russell Private Residence Association (PRPRA) presented counties council with the subsidy increase request, during the May 9 committee of the whole session. The PRPRA asked for a $1.50 increase in the per diem. The association represents 34 operators of subsidized housing facilities in the region, whose clients are mostly seniors and others living on fixed incomes. Selon Anne Jutras, directrice générale du Centre /PWBT$"-"$4GSBODPQIPOFEF1SFTDPUU Russell et responsable de l’organisation de l’évènement, « la violence faite aux femmes ne pourra prendre fin que lorsque tout le monde reconnaitra et travaillera à l’égalité hommes-femmes. » Pour lier la marche 6ONJMMFFOUBMPOT hauts au mouvement #moiaussi , le mot- clic #moiaussijemengage a été créé et les participants à la marche étaient invités à le partager. Le comité organisateur aurait souhaité voir plus d’hommes se joindre à la cause, mais ce dernier s’est dit heureux d’avoir tout de même réussi à rassembler une soixantaine d’hommes.

L’activité a donc permis d’amasser 3500 $ pour la cause. Pour l’occasion, la Banque Royale de Casselman a remis un montant de 1000 $ et la Caisse populaire /PVWFM)PSJ[POEF$BTTFMNBOBGBJUVOEPO de 500 $. L’an prochain, l’évènement en sera à sa 10e édition et les idées se mettent déjà en branle pour que le tout se déroule « en grand »!

LES AÎNÉS D’EMBRUN CHAMPIONS DE QUILLES
Le coup d’envoi pour la construction du Monument de la francophonie Embrun et la région a été donné le 17 mai dernier ! Cette première pelletée de terre marque une étape importante pour les membres du comité organisateur Monument Embrun et la région, presque tous présents pour l’occasion. Amanda Simard, candidate progressiste-conservatrice de Glengarry- Prescott-Russell et conseillère municipale de Russell ainsi que François Bazinet, président du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) étaient également présents pour la photo. Selon l’échéancier de l’entreprise Martel & Fils Inc , à qui a été accordé le contrat de construction, le monument devrait être érigé dès la fin du mois d’août prochain. Le dévoilement se fera lors de la Journée des Francos-Ontariens, le 25 septembre. Une grande fête à laquelle sera invitée toute la communauté se prépare d’ailleurs pour l’occasion ! —photo Caroline Prévost
L’Association des Jeux des aînés et des aînées de l’Ontario, district 8, ont eu le 17 mai dernier leur tournoi de quilles à la Salle de quilles d’Embrun. L’équipe d’Embrun a remporté la médaille d’or et représentera le district 8 aux Jeux d’été de l’Ontario qui auront lieu du 10 au 12 août à Mississauga.
