T.R. Winchester a ordonné une période de probation d’un an sur deux des chefs d’accusation, laissant ce délai à l’employé municipal Martin Guindon pour faire un don totalisant 5000$ à la Société protectrice des animaux (SPCA). Pour deux des autres chefs, la peine a été suspendue. Le verdict de culpabilité demeure cependant sur l’en- semble des chefs, mais en optant pour cette avenue, l’argent irait directement à l’agence qui a déposé la plainte. Le conditionnel est employé ici puisque le canton d’Alfred-Plan- tagenet a amorcé les procédures d’appels de cette décision. «On veut que la cause soit
entendue par un juge, plutôt qu’un juge de paix», a indiqué le directeur général du can- ton, Marc Daigneault. En avril dernier, la juge de paix Winches- ter avait déclaré l’agent coupable d’avoir mis un bullmasti! en situation de détresse, d’avoir manqué à son devoir de lui fournir les soins appropriés alors qu’il l’avait blessé et que la méthode utilisée pour tenter de capturer l’animal était inadéquate. Une arme de calibre 0,22 avait été utilisée. Trois balles sur cinq avaient touché l’animal. Les événements étaient survenus en mars 2013 après que le signalement d’un chien errant

Daigneault, l’attention de l’ensemble des municipalités en Ontario a été retenue par ce dossier. «Cela va avoir une incidence sur la façon de gérer car, là, il n’y a pas de juris- prudence.» Une demande d’appel a donc été déposée. La Couronne pour sa part avait eu l’occa- sion de remarquer un écart entre les posi- tions, déplorant notamment un commen- taire émis dans la lettre d’appui du maire Jean-Yves Lalonde qui, du point de vue de M e Bourgeois, critiquait le travail de l’agence (SPCA). «J’ai senti l’obligation d’adresser ça à la juge. Cheveux au vent, l’air heureux, les par- ticipants de la première édition du Poker Run du Club Mustang Prescott-Russell ont investi les routes de la région dimanche dernier au volant de leurs rutilantes déca- potables. Le Club, fondé cette année, avait lancé l’invitation à tous, tant aux automobilistes qu’aux motocyclistes, pour partager un agréable moment tout en appréciant la beauté du paysage et se faire une petite partie de cartes. Le circuit partait d’Alfred, passant par Lefaivre pour atteindre L’Orignal en appré- ciant la vue sur la rivière des Outaouais. Ensuite, cap sur Chute-à-Blondeau où les panoramas sont aussi à couper le sou#e aux abords de la rivière. Puis, les conduc- teurs onf fait une pause à Saint-Eugène, le temps de déguster une frite à la Patate du coin, pour ensuite s’arrêter chez Beau’s à Vankleek Hill avant de déguster une crème glacée à Blue Corner et en$n retourner au parc Larocque à Alfred pour le dénouement de la partie de poker. Quelques charades ont diverti les participants qui pouvaient voir le coût de leur carte supplémentaire remboursé avec une bonne réponse. Les organisateurs ont choisi de mettre en valeur les particularités du comté de Pres- cott lors de cette première sortie de 110 km, au cours de laquelle les 11 équipes ont pigé une carte en cinq points du circuit. Des bourses ont été remises aux trois équipes gagnantes formées d’Alain et Ma- non Brazeau en première place, André et Carole Lanthier en deuxième et Claude et Ginette Normand en troisième. À l’image du Club Mustang Prescott-Rus- sell, cette activité visait à o!rir une belle journée en compagnie de connaissances et d’amis partageant la même passion. Les membres se retrouvent les jeudis soirs dans le stationnement du Canadian Tire à Hawkesbury, de 18h30 à 20h30. Do not leave pets in vehicle warns OPP
HAWKESBURY| Over the summer months, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) o!cers regularly attend calls about pets left in unattended vehicles. During warm weather pet guardians must take precautions against the dan- ger of heat exhaustion and heatstroke for their pets, says the OPP. The temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with its windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill pets. Leaving a pet in a car with the air con- ditioning on is also taking a risk as many pets have died as the result of a faulty air- conditioning system.
Dogs and cats cool themselves by pant- ing and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the air and up- holstery in a vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. Dogs will be more comfortable if left at home. Symptoms of heatstroke include exagge- rated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting); rapid or erratic pulse; salivation; anxious or staring expression; weakness and muscle tremors; lack of coordination; tongue and lips red (which may eventually turn bluish in colour); convulsions or vomi- ting; collapse, coma and death.

Election candidate training workshop Mid-September is the deadline for anyone interested in running in this year’s civic elections to sign up. Potential candidates in Prescott-Russell communities, both in- cumbentsplanning to run for re-electionandnewcomers, are invited toattendoneof free municipal candidate information sessions that the Ministry of Municipal A!airs and Housing is organizing in the region. Two sessions are scheduled, one in French on August 27, and the other in English Aug. 28. Both are at 6:30 p.m. They are located in the Russell Township municipal o%ce in Embrun, the City of Clarence-Rockland council chambers in Clarence Creek, and theTown of Hawkesbury council chambers. Anyone unable to attend any of these sessions in person may still take part through a webcast presentation at www.russell.ca/elections_a.php?id=424. The sessions are open to candidates for councillor, mayor, and school district trustee posts in all eight municipalities within Prescott-Russell. The meetings are for information purposes on the roles of successful candidates to these positions, not political debates.

choix du groupe et son style musical peut surprendre le public compte tenu que les gens s’attendent à du country. «Même si ça peut paraître bizarre du rock’n’roll dans un festival country, j’ai invité ce groupe parce que beaucoup de personnes m’en ont fait la demande. Il paraît que ce groupe vaut la peine d’être vu», a-t-il déclaré en entrevue téléphonique. Selon lui, des décors dignes des années 1950 et 1960 orneront les murs et les succès qu’ils interpréteront - pendant trois heures - auront de quoi replonger les festivaliers dans une autre époque, soit celle où on buvait un soda avec une boule de crème glacée dedans. Les festivités mettront aussi en vedette des jeunes de la relève. Dès jeudi soir, il sera possible de voir, entre autres, la formation

ALEXANDRIA | Les festivaliers qui participeront au 9 e Country Fest d’Alexandria auront de belles surprises cette année. C’est du moins ce que promet l’un des organisateurs du festival, Patrick Quesnel. Des formations de l’Ontario, de l’Acadie et du Québec viendront animer le public du 28 au 31 août. Le gros spectacle du samedi soir sera donné par le groupe The Wonders. Les six musiciens de la formation viendront interpréter les grands classiques du rock’n’roll des années 1950 et 1960. Comme l’explique Patrick Quesnel, le

C’est avec le duo Amberley Beatty et Fred Lewis que se terminera le Festival. «Amberley est une chanteuse de Toronto qui est toujours demandée par les gens qui fréquentent le Festival. Cette fois-ci elle interprétera des classiques comme du Patsy Cline et du Loretta Lynn, accompagnée à la guitare par Fred Lewis, et ça promet d’être un très bon spectacle», a expliqué l’organisateur. Somme toute, les organisateurs s’attendent à une a#uence similaire à l’an dernier et assure que 700 à 800 espaces pour les véhicules motorisés seront disponibles pour accueillir les festivaliers.
Lafrenière leur succèdera sur scène à 21h ce soir-là. «J’ai vu ce jeune homme chanter lors d’un festival country et je peux vous dire qu’il grouille beaucoup sur scène. Il interprète du country et y ajoute des touches de modernité très intéressantes. Ce sera une première qu’il soit parmi nous au Festival country d’Alexandria», a précisé M. Quesnel. NormCampeau, de Grenville, sera aussi de l’animation du jeudi. Selon l’organisateur, celui qui a fait connaître ses talents de chanteur partout viendra faire danser le public. «Ça va swinguer», a-t-il promis. Pas de place pour l’ennui.

persillée avec le fromage Roche noire de la fromagerie Alexis de Portneuf et le Bleu bénédictin de la fromagerie de l’Abbaye Saint-Benoît. Le fromage montebellois est fabriqué avec du lait de vache et a"né de deux à trois mois. Il est dé#ni par ses concepteurs comme ayant un arôme de champignon qui laisse un goût piquant en bouche. Selon Guy Boucher, il est parfait pour introduire des fromages bleus à des personnes qui n’en consomment pas. «Le goût de notre Rébellion 1837 est plus doux que les autres bleus disponibles sur le marché. Contrairement aux autres, c’est aussi une pâte molle, alors que les bleus sont souvent granuleux», a raconté ce dernier. Soulignons que l’entreprise a gagné le prix du tourisme de l’Outaouais en avril dernier dans la catégorie Agrotourisme et produits régionaux . Selon Guy Boucher, 23 000 personnes ont visité l’entreprise l’an dernier. Leurs fromages sont distribués dans 35 points de vente dans l’Outaouais, et les propriétaires envisagent maintenant de trouver des points de vente en Ontario notamment à Ottawa et à Toronto. «Suite à notre participation dans deux concours de fromage à Toronto avec notre fromage Tête à Papineau , nous avons reçu des o!res pour être distribuer dans la région de Toronto. On souhaite bien gagner le Prix Caseus le 16 septembre prochain qui pourrait nous aider à ouvrir des portes au niveau du reste du Canada avec notre fromage bleu», a conclu Guy Boucher.
MONTEBELLO | Les deux copropriétaires de la fromagerie Montebello, Alain Boyer et Guy Boucher, ont reçu une bonne nouvelle récemment. Leur fromage Rébellion 1837 , se retrouve en lice pour remporter le prestigieux prix Sélection Caseus qui sera remis le 16 septembre prochain. Ce prix pourrait bien aider l’entreprise à élargir son territoire de vente. Le fromage bleu Rébellion 1837 a vu le jour il y a de cela trois ans. Pour sa conception, les propriétaires ont fait a!aire avec le fromager André Fouillet, qui est connu dans la région. Ce dernier a aidé Alain Boyer dans l’établissement de la fromagerie mais aussi dans la conception des fromages de l’entreprise. Le Rébellion 1837 se retrouve en compétition dans la catégorie Pâte

VANKLEEK HILL | Beau’s Brewery is cross- ing another border and will start selling its award-winning Lug Tread beer in Que- bec next year. The Vankleek Hill brewery won’t be partnering with the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ), choosing an in- dependent distributor instead. “We already have our warehouse ready in the Montréal area and our distributor has 450 customers in Quebec”, said owner Tim Beauchesne. “We expect to start selling our beer in Quebec in February. We’ll start with the Lug Tread, since our customers from Quebec are familiar with our $agship beer. We’ll probably have our seasonals also along the way.” With constant innovation and advance- ment, Beau’s now has a top-of-the-line brewery in Vankleek Hill. “This is the #rst year that we have the capacities to meet demand”, said Tim Beauchesne.“We’re good for 10 years.” Without the SAQ rigid practices in the way, Beau’s is keeping its marketing, image and business philosophy intact while con- quering a new market with familiar faces. Wood Fair and Wood Auction showcases all aspects of forestry and the crafting of wood products, then and now.“ For the families, the fair is an opportunity to discover theMuseum’s vast collection of woodworking tools and wood buildings. Fun games and entertainment are also on the program with wood art exhibitions and creative woodworking activities for children. For the technical minds, timber framing, chainsaw maneuvering and wood turning demonstrations will be a must. The Vankleek Hill Old Time Fiddlers, accordionist Jean-Yves Otis, keyboardist Aaron Pritchard and singer Kathleen Sauvé will also lighten the mood during the day with music and dancing. On the business side of things, wood entrepreneurs and woodlot owners will participate in the public auction at 3 p.m.. Up to 100 lots will be up for bid. Sta! at the South Nation Conservation Authority o"ce (SNC) have reason for a little early end-of-summer celebration this month. The SNC has learned that its Totally Turtles program is one of six selected as the award-winning #nalists in Shell Oil’s $2 mil- lion national Fuelling Change grants pro- gram. “It’s a prestigious sort of double win,” sta- ted Karen Paquette, SNC project leader, “the icing on the cake of the $50,000 Shell award that our Totally Turtles program won last year.” Paquette and other SNC sta! credit local support in the South Nation River Wa- tershed region and from other parts of the country for the number of online votes that pushed Totally Turtles to the top of the list out of more than 250 entries in this year’s Fuelling Change competition. Each of the six winners of Shell Fuelling Change grants were invited to provide a short essay descri- bing their projects with the prize as natio- nal exposure. SNC’s turtle project crept ahead of its rivals again, into the national promotion spotlight, to help the regional conservation agency with its e!orts to “protect, promote, and enhance turtles at risk” in the South Nation River watershed. “It certainly doesn’t hurt to have the turtles project, once of SNC’s showcase pro- grams, receive such great promotion,” said Paquette. “Who knows what it might lead to! It would be great to see other conser- vation agencies use our approach as a tem- plate.” The South Nation watershed is home to eight species of turtles within its 4200-square-kilometre area. Seven of these species are on the Ontario Species At Risk

SNC’s work, both on its own and in partnership with others, on turtle pro- tection and conservation work has been ongoing since 2007. The current Totally Turtles project is a bilingual, curricu- lum-linked, education program aimed at

students, which teachers can use as part of their classroom studies course. It is also available for use by other groups as part of special events. The project goals are to raise public awareness about the habi- tats for these turtles, encourage support with creating safe and suitable nesting habitats, and setting up roadway crossing signs and protective fencing where exis- ting nesting sites are located in high road- way traffic areas. The Fuelling Change grant will help SNC with all of these goals. SNC sta! have noted a“marked reduction”in the number of road- kill incidents involving turtles where cros- sing warning signs and fencing is set up. “As we have from the beginning,” said Paquette, “we ask members of the public to alert us when they #nd a turtle dead or alive, a vulnerable nest, or a dangerous crossing. The program strives to engage the public on best practices to ensure the safety and preservation of these old and myste- rious creatures.”
