Pierre Lemieux Spring Gala

The Pierre Lemieux Spring Gala was a great success. Lemieux is seen here with his guest of honour, Shelly Glover, the MP for St. Boniface, Manitoba, and his wife Audrey. DIANE HUNTER diane.hunter@eap.on.ca

business owners, lawyers, veterans, youth, and people from across the riding. The Guest of Honour for the evening was the Minister of Heritage Canada and Official Languages, the Honourable Shelly Glover. “Shelly, I have tremendous respect for you as a friend, as a colleague, and as a Minister,” said Lemieux as he introduced Glover. Prior to life in politics, Glover served on theWinnipeg Police Service as a police officer for 19 years. Glover is the first police officer to take leave of absence from the police service to serve as a Member of Parliament. “A passionate advocate for victims of crime, women and children, it is Shelly’s strong desire to make positive changes to our criminal justice system and to give victims a stronger voice that inspired her to enter the world of politics,” Lemieux said during his introduction. “She has excelled in many roles, the first as the Parliamentary Secretary for Official Languages, then for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and then as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance.” Glover does not plan on running in the 2015 election, but will instead go back to police work. “I really only have one piece of advice, and it is not for you, Minister,” quipped Lemieux. “It is for the criminals inWinnipeg. Shelly Glover is coming back in town, so you had better pack your bags and git!” The gala provided a great opportunity to celebrate the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell achievements and successes. Lemieux’s key message was to let his constituents know that he is on their side to listen, to understand concerns, and to represent them within the government.

Approximately 180 supporters and friends from across the riding attended MP Pierre Lemieux’s 9 th annual Spring Gala April 18 at Wendover’s Lucien- Delorme community hall. Guests were dressed to impress as they enjoyed a high-end meal from La Cuisine Jean Bernard of Plantagenet. Ingredients for themeal were gathered from local producers including duck confit from Mariposa Farms in Plantagenet, potatoes fromFerme Delorme in Curran, dessert fromCakes onSt. Philippe inAlfred, beer fromBeau’s Brewery in Vankleek Hill and Cassel Brewery in Casselman, and coffee by Groupe Convex. Chocolates and flowers from Petites Gâteries in Alfred were also enjoyed. “As you know, I am a strong supporter of our local businesses and producers,” exclaimed Lemieux. “So are you, just by being here, so let us enjoy together!” Lemieux thanked his staff and introduced his parents, Diane and Guy Lemieux. “My father is a man of integrity whom I admire and love,” said Lemieux. “My mom is one who listens, who cares and who loves. She is a great woman and I would just like to say that I love you, Mom.” Lemieux thanked guests for attending and for supporting him. “Please know that representing you for the past nine years has been and remains a great honour,” Lemieux said humbly. “It is important to me to hear your views, your thoughts and your concerns in order to be your voice within our Parliament and within our government.” Attending the event were mayors, councillors, community leaders, farmers,

CHANTAL QUIRION chantal.quirion@eap.on.ca

Seenhere are JudithRoy, Christina Stuewe, Korina Tkachenko, Jennifer Beauchesne, Matthew O’Hara, Eddy Earwigg, AlexMcKinnon, andDenise Morin, alongwithsomeofgarbagecollected. “We found a lot of fast food containers,” said Beauchesne. “We found enoughof our own cups, too. It was worthwhile for us tomake sure they don’t stay there. We do the same at our Octoberfest.” On Earth Day, various suggestions are brought to light about recycling and energy conserva- tion. Small ideas have a huge impact such as – plant a tree every year, switch off lights when not in use, use recyclable bags for grocery shopping etc. Earth Day spirit

Lemieux announces support for Francophone entrepreneurs

DIANE HUNTER diane.hunter@eap.on.ca

MP Pierre Lemieux for Glengarry-Pres- cott-Russell announced more than $1.1 million in federal funding for Franco- phone entrepreneurs in Prescott-Rus- sell (PR) and the surrounding region, at a press conference April 14. “Today’s record-breaking investment in Prescott- Russell’s economic development is a clear reminder that our government is focused on creating jobs and opportu- nities for the people of EasternOntario,” said Lemieux. “I will continue focusing on job creation and providing local resi- dents with the business tools they need to succeed.” Lemieux made the announcement on behalf of the Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency (FedDev Ontario) for Southern Ontario, Honorable Gary Goodyear. The federal government is investing $934,000 in the Prescott-Russell Community Develop- ment Corporation (PRDCD) under Fed- Dev’s Economic Development Initiative (EDI) program. The Entrepreneurial Academy of PR will also receive federal funding of up to $250,000, through the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP), to sup- port the development and growth of key economic sectors in Eastern Ontario. “It’s for the youngsters to be able to have paying jobs, to be able to live the dream of being entrepreneurs and have access to coa- ching andmentoring,” said AndreMartel, executive director ofThe Entrepreneurial Academy of PR. “When we were young, we didn’t have that opportunity. With the global economy the way it is, you need to have these resources in order to succeed.” Lemieux explained that the signifi- cant federal funding investment in PR’s small and medium businesses will work to strengthen the local economy. “Access to funding is always a challenge for busi- nesses trying to launch new and exciting products,” said Lemieux. “As a result, this federal funding will play a key role in helping our local businesses succeed.” The PRCDCwill coordinate the project activities, business counselling, training and mentorship components, while the Entrepreneurial Academy of PRwill assist in the management of the project and its network of entrepreneurs will offer coaching, mentorship, and training ser- vices. “In obtaining a grant for training, coaching, and mentoring services, our organization is proud to have the privilege of working in partnership with the PR CDC for the economic growth of French-lan- guage entrepreneurs and businesses in Eastern Ontario,” said Denis Charlebois, president of the Entrepreneurial Academy of PR. The project is anticipated to improve the success rate of new businesses as well as the return of young entrepre- neurs in rural Eastern Ontario. Through EDI, FedDev Ontario will invest up to $4 million in funding from 2013 to 2018 to strengthen innovation, entrepreneurship, partnerships, and the diversification of economic activities in official language minority communities.

Andre Martin, executive director of Entrepreneurial Academy of Prescott Russell; Carole Armstrong, executive director for the Eastern Ontario CFDC Network; John Candie, executive director for the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corporation; Pierre Lemieux, MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell; Fernand Dicaire, mayor of the township of Alfred and Plantagenet; Michel Poirier, vice chair of the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corporation; andDenis Charlebois, chair of the Prescott-Russell Entrepreneurial Academy each had the opportunity to say a few words during the press release announcing federal funding for entrepreneurs in Eastern Ontario, April 14.

Health coach Gudula Bauer was giving tips to visitors on how to live a healthier life. She said being a woman hasn’t affec- ted her business. However, as the wife of a dairy farmer, it was difficult to get salesmen to talk to her. “It’s all in the attitude,” she said. “However, in the dairy business, the salesmen didn’t want to talk tome because I ama woman. This is more a female-based business. 90% of my clients are female. Your power is in building your business, not what

others’ opinions are.” Bauer is at the Van- kleek Hill market each Saturday, and offers workshops in raw treats, fermenting, food storage and more. Other local business owners like Tara McWhirter from Garden Path Homemade soaps, and Rebecca Bradley from the Pink Bow Tie, both in Vankleek Hill, were on site to offer their wares and chat with visitors. The event was once again a great success.
