Lamunicipalité de Russell a placé une de- mi-douzaine de balises de vitesse, aux deux extrémités de la rue Blais, à Embrun, afin de pousser les automobilistes à ralentir. Ce projet pilote a été mis en place suite aux préoccupations sur la vitesse dans le voisinage, aux alentours du Parc Yahoo et près de la piste cyclable. Township accounts in the black Russell Township council received a welcome report from a representative of Deloitte and Touche, the accounting firm responsible for auditing the municipality’s financial records. Les pompiers volontaires de Casselman en colère Les pompiers volontaires de Casselman avaient l’intention d’exprimer leur colère à la réunion du conseil du mardi 25 août (après la tombée de notre journal). Une source qui préférait conserver l’anonymat a affirmé au Reflet-News que l’adminis- tration souhaite faire signer un contrat de travail aux pompiers volontaires. « .Je ne connais aucune caserne de pom- piers volontaires dans Prescott-Russell qui fait signer ce genre de contrat, a-t-il dit. Le maire Conrad Lamadeleine s’est dit du même avis. « Je ne suis pas du tout d’accord avec ça, a-t-il insisté. C’est normal que ça inquiète les pompiers. Il y a trop de monde qui a raison. Francophone students return to school next week while English students have until after the Labour Day weekend before they are back in class. Meanwhile, two unions representing teachers have been busy at the bargaining table over the summer. The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (EFTO) will up the ante starting Sept. 1 in its work-to-rule campaign against the provincial educationministry.The EFTO has been in a strike action situation for several months now but has limited its strategy so far to restricting its members to their ordinary classroomduties plus some extra-curricular volunteer activities. With the start of the new school year, the EFTO announced that it will continue nego- tiations with the province but will also now begin phase two of its work-to-rule campaign which will involvemore restrictions for ele- mentary teachers and occasional teachers on what their on-the-job duties will be. In Eastern Ontario, the EFTO action affects operations at Upper Canada District School Board schools. The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) deals with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Associa- tion (OECTA) so that the EFTO action does New con targets Chinese seniors A new scam which has shown up in other parts of Canada may now be appearing in Eastern Ontario. It is called The Blessing Scam or The Chinese Evil Spirits Scam, and its target are senior Chinese women with strong traditional backgrounds. The scam has someone claiming to be a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine contacting the victim and telling them they can get help “cleansing the house” of evil spirits. The victim is told to bring cash or other valuables in a bag and receive a “blessing” in return. When the victim opens the bag later, it proves empty. Police believe an organized gang or group is behind the scam. Anyone approached with this con scheme or who has information about it is asked to call the Ottawa Police Organized Fraud Section at 613-236-1222, extension 5433, their local OPP detachment, or the CrimeStop- pers toll-free confidential tips line at 1-800- 222-8477. – Gregg Chamberlain

Des appels téléphoniques frauduleux en Ontario Une mise en garde a été émise par la Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC) concernant des appels téléphoniques frauduleux dans la province de l’Ontario. Des individus se faisant passer pour des membres de la GRC appellent les gens et exigent le paiement d’amendes ou d’impôt sur le revenu. Ils peuvent aussi avoir recours à une autre tactique de fraude. Ils informent les victimes qu’elles doivent faire un paiement immédiat, car sinon elles seront arrêtées dans les 24 heures. La Gen- darmerie royale du Canada précise aussi que dans la plupart des cas répertoriés, le numéro de la ligne de demande de la GRC apparaît sur l’afficheur des victimes. La GRC a précisé qu’elle ne com- munique pas avec des particuliers en vue de percevoir des amendes ou des taxes. Toute personne qui aurait reçu un tel appel ou qui connait quelqu’un qui en aurait reçu est priée de communiquer avec le service de police local ou d’appeler le Centre antifraude du Canada au 1-888-495-8501.

Wild parsnip grows most often in road- side ditches, along railway right-of-ways, up through cracks in parking lot pavement, around sports fields, and in any other areas where the ground has been disturbed such as recreation sites, pastures, fields, fence rows, and residential yards. The most common times for growth are during the summer months of July, August and September. Some of the burns can leave brown scarring that persists for several years. Sap coming in contact with the eyes may cause temporary or permanent blindness or severe eye damage.
The best way to deal with and prevent the spread of wild parsnip involves removing the plant and burning it in a safe manner to avoid the chemicals from the sap which may be in the smoke. Mowing is one way to get rid of the plant if it happens before it can spread its seeds. Digging out or hand-pulling wild parsnip are the best methods because this gets the whole plant out by the roots. Whatever method is used, care demands protective clothing during the operation. That includes goggles or a face shield, rubber gloves, rubber boots, and coveralls which are bound at the hemof the legs to prevent any bits of the plant or its saps from getting up inside the pant leg. After dealing with wild parsnip, wash boots and gloves with soap, water, and a hand brush first before taking them off. Wash coveralls alone, not with other clothing and hang them out to dry rather than use the dryer. As a precaution, wash out the washer with disinfectant after using it to wash the coveralls.

Harper flies through Rockland
Harper, “I amconfident that Canadian com- munities from coast to coast will be better as a result.” Lemieux added his support to the prime minister’s announcement.The Conservative MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell noted that many service clubs in his riding would benefit with increased memberships from such a tax policy change. “I work closely with them and support them in their important work,” said Lemieux. “I am very happy that they will all benefit from today’s announcement.” Following the primeminister’s announce- ment, reporters for the major media assi- gned to follow the Harper campaign group during the weeks leading up to the October election fired questions at Harper regarding the latest revelations from the trial of Sena- tor Mike Duffy and the corruption scandal now plaguing the Conservative re-election campaign. Reports from the CBC, CTV, the Ottawa Citizen, and the Canadian Press newswire service all noted that there were “noticeable groans” fromConservative sup- porters in the crowd when the subject came up but that Harper then motioned for the hecklers to be silent and let the reporters continue. Responding to the questions, Har- per continued to assert that he had no knowledge of the controversial $90,000 repayment of Duffy’s expenses. He blamed Duffy for making wrongful expense claims,

PrimeMinister StephenHarper was in and out of Rockland on a surprise Sunday visit during his weekend re-election campaign through EasternOntario and other regions. Harper was the special guest speaker for the official opening Sunday of incumbent ConservativeMP Pierre Lemieux’s campaign office in Rockland. Harper met, on Aug. 23, with a large crowd of partisan supporters in the grand ballroomof the River Rock Inn for his campaign speech during which he announced that if his government returned to power he would make membership fees for community service clubs like the Knights of Columbus or the Royal Canadian Legion eligible for federal income tax credits. “If we can support service clubs to keep doing what they already do so well,” said

Fatal collision claims two lives Two people from the Osgoode area are dead following a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a van. Shea Laughlin, 24, and Marc Sabourin, 31, both of Osgoode, were pronounced dead at the scene Aug. 13 after their motorcycle collided with a van on Belmeade Road near Winchester, around 8 p.m. The driver of the van, a 41-year-old Ottawa man, name withheld at present, was not hurt though his passenger did suffer some minor injuries.Police traffic investigators have determined that the motorcycle was in the eastbound lane of Belmeade Road. The van was west- bound at the time and, for reasons not disclosed yet, went over into the eastbound lane. Both vehicles then collided.OPP investigation of the accident continues and charges may be pending. Éventuellement, nous voudrions faire venir un système de vieil- lissement en tonneaux de chêne pour la microbrasserie, montrer aux gens à quel point ça peut être aussi complexe que de faire du vin. » Les deux brasseurs ont amorcé l’aventure de la fabrication de la bière lorsqu’ils étaient encore au collège et c’est dans leur garage que tout a commencé. « On voulait explorer les bières. Les bières importées sont nette- ment plus goûteuses que les bières commer- ciales d’ici. Alors, pourquoi ne pas en faire ?

On a commencé à fabri- quer notre bière pendant que nous suivions nos cours et, selon nos proches, on devait poursuivre la fabrication de bière. » Richard Ménard a été approché par les deux jeunes entrepreneurs et, après avoir pris connaissance de plusieurs facteurs, il a accepté de devenir partenaire avec eux. « J’ai étudié leur plan d’affaires et c’était très inté- ressant, a-t-il expliqué. La microbrasserie, c’est une grossemode et les gens sont attirés par ces nouvelles bières qui ont du goût. Ils veulent connaître une bière de qualité, qui se différencie des bières commerciales habituelles. » La microbrasserie devrait ouvrir ses portes le 1 er janvier 2016. Un espace pour accueillir les amateurs de bière sera bien sûr créé. Les deux comparses ont choisi minutieusement le nomde leur commerce. Il s’appellera la Brasserie Étienne Brûlé, en
l’honneur du pionnier français qui a décou- vert l’Ontario. « Nous tenons à nos racines franco-ontariennes », a conclu Pierre-André Roy.

Vars industrial park filling up There’s not much room left now in Vars’ industrial park. The Township of Russell has sold its last piece of property in the 417 Industrial Park near Vars. Economic Development Director Daniel Gatien reported during a phone interview that a few pieces of privately-owned parcels of property are still available for future development but now the Township’s focus for the Vars industrial park will be on extending water and sewer services there to support present and future commercial and industrial tenants. «We’re talking over 300 jobs created once all of the developments have gone through,» Gatien said, adding the developments will also provide the Township with close to $500,000 in annual property taxes. Metro Tow Trucks acquired the last piece of municipal land in the industrial park for its tow truck assembly operation. The company is an international dealer in custom-made tow truck.

Trois finalistes seront nommés pour chacune des catégories. Les résidents de la municipalité de Rus- sell sont invités à soumettre le nom d’un

C’est le 23 août dernier que le déjeuner annuel à l’Aéroparc d’Embrun a eu lieu en compagnie des deux jeunes gagnants du Club de lecture de la bibliothèque d’Embrun, Félix Courneya et Émilie Boucher, et de leur famille. À eux, se sont jointes plus de 350 personnes qui ont désiré prendre part à ce déjeuner mais aussi pour venir admirer les nombreux oiseaux volants qui prenaient majestueusement place sur le terrain de l’Aéroparc. Le président du Club d’aviation d’Embrun, Charles Martel, s’est adressé aux convives en disant que l’événement avait été béni des dieux grâce au chaud soleil de la journée. Une partie de l’argent amassé au cours de la journée sera remis au Centre hospitalier de l’Est de l’Ontario (CHEO).

L’Omnium Daniel Gigault récolte 1000 $ pour Valoris
La Société de développement communautaire de Prescott-Russell (SDCPR) a remis un don de 1000 $ à la Fondation Valoris, à la suite de son tournoi de golf annuel, l’Omnium Daniel Gigault. Organisé pour une deuxième année consécutive, l’Omnium Daniel Gigault a rassemblé plus d’une centaine de personnes au Centre de golf La Nation, à Curran, le 21 août dernier. Les participants ont eu droit, en plus de leur partie de golf, à un déjeuner et à un dîner barbecue. C’est la première fois que la SDCPR amassait des fonds dans le cadre de ce tournoi. Sur la photo, Jean-Yves Léonard, président du conseil d’administration de la Fondation Valoris, reçoit un chèque de 1000 $ des mains de Sylvain Charlebois, le président du conseil d’administration de la Société de développement communautaire Prescott-Russell, et de John Candie, le directeur général de la Société de développement communautaire Prescott-Russell.
Roméo Champagne, 93 ans, habitant à la résidence Le Genesis, à Limoges, est un homme actif et généreux. Depuis qu’il a appris à tricoter, il y a seulement trois ans, il confectionne des tuques, des écharpes, des mitaines et des cache- cous pour offrir à tous ceux qu’il connaît ou encore qu’il croise. Cet ancien fermier et travailleur de la construction fait une dizaine de ces couvre-chefs par semaine. Une tuque pour adulte lui demande cinq heures d’ouvrage. Depuis qu’il a commencé, en 2012, il en a donné plus de 200 à des familles, des amis, des petits-enfants, etc. Cet homme aime bouger et personne ne peut lui dire d’arrêter. Depuis qu’il a arrêté de conduire sa voiture, en 2013, il aime prendre son vélo à trois roues pour faire le tour de la résidence. Il pédale 3 km chaque jour.

Look for a course that will teach you ba sic structural language skills (spelling, pro nunciation, conjugation, grammar), as well as conversational skills. For example, it is
fun to learn that the French equivalent of the expression “when pigs fly” is quand les poules auront des dents, which, when lite rally translated, means“when chickens have teeth”! Of course, mastering another language requires patience and perseverance; after all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. sité est variable sont une excellente activité pour apprendre à respirer, du moins pour prendre conscience de notre respiration. Les exercices proposés font non seule ment travailler notre physique, mais nous obligent à respirer profondément. En fait pour tirer les bienfaits maximaux du yoga, il faut arriver à mettre la respiration et les exercices au diapason. Le taichi : Dans ces cours, l’art de respirer est à développer pour prendre conscience du courant énergétique qui y est associé. Le travail se fait tout en mouve ment, les enchaînements sont plus longs et nombreux, mais la coordination à la respira tion demeure tout aussi importante. Le Qi Gong : Ces cours sont basés sur l’art de la respiration qui nous pousse à prendre conscience de l’énergie vitale en nous et au tour de nous. Les mouvements sont lents, la formule plus méditative. Cette gymnas tique traditionnelle chinoise permet, entre autres, d’augmenter la concentration.
