De Limoges à Sochi! Photo: Annie Lafortune Les élèves de l’École St-Viateur de Limoges ont préparé une chorégraphie pour souligner les Jeux olympiques de Sochi, en Russie. Cet événement a mobilisé les 260 écoliers de l’école, de la maternelle à la 6e année, qui se sont prêtés au jeu avec bonne humeur. Vêtus de blanc et de rouge, ils ont mimé les différents sports d’hiver qui sont pratiqués aux Jeux olympiques : du patinage de vitesse, en passant par le biathlon, le saut à ski, la luge, etc. C’est l’enseignante Nathalie Brunet qui a créé la chorégraphie et qui a pris un plaisir fou à diriger toute cette petite troupe. Radio-Canada Ottawa-Gatineau était sur place pour immortaliser cet exercice et pour capter les images qui ont été présentées lundi soir au bulletin de nouvelles et qui, tout au long des Jeux, seront présentées sous forme de petites capsules.

RUSSELL | The first Russell Winter Carnival in almost two decades was an unqualified success, say organizers and the commit- tee is already discussing ways to improve the event for next year. Several hundred people attended the wide variety of events held in the village of Russell from February 5 to 9, beginning with The Mayor’sWine and Cheese on February 5 and ending with the community campfire. Part of the strategy of the Kin Club organ- izers was to involve as many other organ- izations as possible, and if it worked out, to include pre-existing events held independ- ently last year in the carnival program, such as the RocKin’ the Night Away 50s- 60s dance, and the Brain Freeze ice-fishing derby and after party. The many games and contests with prizes of several hundreddollars each added to the numbers participating. House and window decorating contests, the Gold Rush scav- enger hunt, the Carni-Factor, the Amazing Race, the Talent Show, Bingo, and the photo contest were some of the ways to win big. Church suppers and community breakfasts, Scouts and Guides participation, hockey and shinny both inside and out, children’s games, wagon rides, Zumba, and the Snow- flake youth dance provided physical fun. The craft show provided a unique shopping experience and all the local vendors and or- ganizations which participated in a variety of ways were all pleased with the turnout. The Winter Carnival Committee included Doug Anthony, Nikki Jardine-Frigon, Con- nie Johnston, Bill McInnis, Tammy McKinley and Julie Furlotte. Sarah Greer of 2 nd Russell Guides enjoyed maple taffy outside the Russell Arena during the RussellWinter Carnival, held from February 7 to 9.

Bryanna Larocque of Chesterville was happy to pose with RocKin the Kin Club of Russell’s beaver mascot at the Russell Winter Carnival, held Feb- ruary 7-9. It was the first carnival held in Russell in over 15 years and organizers were very pleased with the public’s response, and with the cooperative weather. Left, Ben and AdamVandevisch took turns playing some of the children’s games set up near the outdoor rink in Russell as part of the Kin Club Russell Carnival. Besides games there was a Zum- ba warmup for contest entrants and several games of hockey or shinny were played on the outdoor rink. Dozens of people entered the various contests and over the three days hundreds of people participated in car- nival events. Ice conditions were perfect under cold, clear skies.
Le Club Optimiste de Moose Creek a organisé des mini jeux olympiques d’hiver à l’École La Source, le 22 janvier dernier. Cette activité a connu un franc succès. Les élèves de la 3e à la 6e année étaient divisés en équipes mixtes et représentaient un pays qu’ils affichaient en portant un dossard. Il y avait six différents défis sportifs à relever. À la toute fin, le Club Optimiste a remis des certificats de participation ainsi que des médailles d’or, d’argent et de bronze aux équipes ayant accumulé le plus de points. À l’avant, on reconnaît SavanahVachon, Brody Villeneuve, Ayrton Bain et Dapné Bray; au milieu, Éric Richer, Brianna Piette et Gracie Leroux; à l’arrière, Debbie Bazinet (organisatrice) Marcel Bazinet, Francine Ciccarelli, Josée Emond, Nicholas Leroux, Cassandra Rolland et Rhéal Bazinet. VARS l The Vars Carnival held from Febru- ary 7 to 9 in the village of Vars saw hun- dreds of visitors and participants in its events. The weekend began with an official kick- off and spaghetti supper attended by over 200 diners at École St-Guillaume on Friday night. Local dignitaries included MP Pierre Lemieux, MPP Grant Crack, Ottawa Mayor JimWatson and Councilor Stephen Blais. Saturday outdoor activities centered around Alcide Trudeau Park, where horse- drawn wagon rides, hot chocolate, chil- dren’s games and rides, and the CowGuy entertained. Well over 200 people attended that day as well. Jeremy Brady of Vars planned afternoon ice activities and games on the rink in which over 40 people played. Vars Idol ran on Saturday night, featuring a wide variety of talent. Videos of some per- formances are up on YouTube and can be linked to through the Vars Optimist Club’s Facebook page. Développer l’économie au détriment de la nature ?
Faisant suite à l’article du 6 février intitulé Le maire St.Pierre briguera un deuxième mandat, je m’engage par sens du devoir à partager mes inquiétudes. Pourquoi bâtir une si grande caserne de pompiers? Prévoyez-vous un boom rési- dentiel? «Dans quelques années, il y aura beaucoup de maisons autour.» C’est ce qu’on a pu lire dans l’article, et on ne parle pas de 20 ou 30 ans d’ici. Ce qu’on retient le plus, c’est que le maire prévoit développer et continuer à accroître l’étalement urbain pour éventuellement effacer les limites entre l’urbain et le rural. Un boom résiden- tiel invitant la démographie galopante… voilà ce qui semble être le deuxième man- dat du maire. Appuyer des projets comme celui d’Old Town West, un méga développement immobilier s’étirant sur les deux côtés de la rivière Castor, pour les cinq prochaines années, ne fait que commencer à étouffer le charme du magnifique village du vieux Russell avec ses immenses arbres cente- naires et son architecture victorienne. Building snow forts is a common winter amusement for children. But parents need to be aware that under certain conditions it can turn dangerous without warning. One Canadian child has died this winter and another is in critical condition in hospital after being bur- ied in snow by accident. The first incident happened in a Winnipeg suburb on Feb. 5, the second the same day in Amaranth Township in Dufferin County in southern Ontario. Both children were aged nine. Police investigation has determined that the children in each case
were tunnelling into a snowbank that then collapsed, burying them for an unknown amount of time. The Winnipeg child is still alive but was listed in critical condition. The other child was pronounced dead at the hospital where he was taken after rescuers dug him out. Parents and all caregivers are urged to check up on children’s activities when they are playing outside during win- ter.

EMBRUN | Russell Township will have a different setup for its policing service for the year. Council will vote on a resolution at its Feb. 18 regular session to designate a representative on a Community Policing Advisory Committee. The group is a joint effort between Russell Township, the City of Clarence-Rockland, and the Village of Casselman. Mayor Jean-Paul St-Pierre noted during the Feb. 3 committee of the whole session that the policing issue for municipalities who contract with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was a hot topic at the first meeting this year of the Association of Mu- nicipalities of Ontario (AMO). He attended as the new president for the Eastern On- tario Wardens Caucus. “There was great concern,” the mayor told council.
AMO delegates voted to create an adviso- ry committee to look into the OPP costs sit- uation for member municipalities and the new policing contract model that the OPP have proposed to replace the previous one.

Speeder metamorphs into litterbug
A police officer trying to catch a speeder over the weekend had to endure a shrap- nel storm of litter. Const. David Dionne was on patrol on Highway 417 near the village of Russell Feb. 8 when he clocked a vehicle going 140 kilometres an hour in a posted 100 zone. He set off after the vehicle and discovered he was chasing after a litterbug. At one point during the pursuit along the highway someone threw some stuff out the passenger side window of the vehicle. Const. Dionne’s car was pelted with a col- lection of plastic cups. He brought the speeder to a halt in the end who was ticketed from speeding under the Highway Traffic Act. Debit card theft Police are hunting a would-be identity thief. Const. Cory Tremblay answered a call Feb. 5 about a theft from a vehicle parked near the Knights of Columbus Hall on St- Isidore Road in Casselman. A purse and several other items were taken from the ve- hicle. Later on that day someone tried to use the stolen debit and credit cards at the Na- tional Bank ATM machine in Casselman. Anyone with information about the theft or attempts to use the stolen debit and credit cards can call Const. Tremblay at the Embrun OPP station at 613-443-4499 or toll-free to 1-888-310-1122 or the CrimeStoppers toll-free confidential tips line at 1-800-222-8477. Impaired Driver Police have charged John Kaczmarek, 62, of Embrun with impaired driving and driv- ing with a blood-alcohol rating exceeding 80 milligrams. The charges resulted from a traffic complaint Feb. 5 about a vehicle weaving along Notre-Dame Street in Embrun. Police arriving at the location pulled the vehicle over and tested the driver with a roadside screening device. A fail reading resulted. Police took the driver to the sta- tion for a regular breathalyzer test with results showing blood-alcohol levels above the legal limit. Kaczmarek is scheduled for a provincial court appearance Feb. 19 on the charges. Trailer thief Someone is driving around with a stolen utility trailer. Const. Attilio Vortasio from the Hawkesbury OPP station is investigating a trailer theft report from The Nation Municipality. Sometime between Feb. 4 and 5 a person went into the back yard of a residence on County Road 3 and left with a utility trailer. The stolen trailer, measures 12 feet by sev- en feet, is black in colour and described as “extremely dirty” at the time it was taken. Anyone with information about the theft can phone the CrimeStoppers confiden- tial tips line toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.

Une des oeuvres de l’artiste qui partira pour la coupe du monde 2014, au Brésil. Intitulé Rivière Ontarienne, ce canevas de 121 cm par 107 cm (48’’ x 42’’) est de forme hexagonale. Son médium est l’huile à la spatule «parce que la spatule me laisse beaucoup plus de liberté dans mes mouvements», explique-t- elle. Depuis quelques années, sa démarche est passée à un désir toujours plus croissant de liberté et de spontanéité qui l’ont ame- née à adopter des gestes plus larges et plus distincts. De style figuratif et abstrait tout à la fois, ses œuvres dévoilent différents thèmes aux couleurs chaudes et aux atmos- phères profondes. La technique de l’artiste se définit par l’utilisation de couches suc- cessives de couleurs, guidée par l’émotion du moment qui renvoie l’image d’une cer- taine liberté aux curieux et qui les amène à porter un regard profond sur l’être. Cette technique crée des effets vaporeux, des fondus recherchés où elle laisse se côtoyer l’abstraction et la figuration. Depuis plusieurs années, son travail est reconnu et respecté, l’amenant à participer à d’importantes expositions de groupes et individuelles, et à des symposiums, ici au Canada mais aussi à New York et en France. Plusieurs de ses œuvres reposent sur les murs de certaines galeries tant au Québec, en Ontario qu’à New York. Le maire de La Nation, François St-Amour, et son équipe ont été touchés par son tra- vail et cette future exposition au Brésil. Ainsi, dans le but d’aider Mme Frenière à connaître un succès artistique au mois de juin, il a été décidé qu’un montant de 250$ lui sera remis, ceci afin d’apporter une aide pour le transport en avion de ses œuvres.

The second Brain Freeze ice-fishing tournament was held in conjunction with the Russell Winter Carnival on Saturday, February 8. The tournament was started last year by Aidan Harps to raise funds for Justin McKenna’s Brain Matters organization. Here Rebecca Nadeau and Emilie Boldt wait for a fish to bite. The event was held on the Castor River near the pool in Russell. Although not many fish were caught partici- pants had a good time out on the 30-inch thick ice in the sunshine. CONSEIL D’ADMINISTRATION BIBLIOTHÈQUE PUBLIQUE DE CASSELMAN
La bibliothèque publique de Casselman recherche des bénévoles dynamiques pour combler des postes au sein du Conseil d’administration de la Bibliothèque publique de Casselman.
Mandat :
Pendant la durée correspondant à celle du mandat du conseil municipal.
Rencontres :
Minimum d’une rencontre par mois et selon les besoins du conseil d’administration.
Exigences :
Être âgé de 18 ans ou plus. Être citoyen canadien. Être résidant du Village de Casselman. Être bilingue, français et anglais, parlé et écrit.

Depuis maintenant 20 ans, l’orienteure de l’École secondaire catholique Embrun, Diane Longtin, ainsi que des groupes d’élèves se rendent dans de petits villages de montagnes, en République Dominicaine, pour apporter leur aide dans différentes tâches. Du 28 juin au 29 juillet, elle partira avec 19 élèves d’Embrun, de Casselman et d’Alexandria, à destination du village de Los Guanos. Leur séjour consistera à con- struire des maisonnettes afin de redonner aux villageois un abri adéquat. Une ONG sera sur place afin de guider le groupe lors de ce travail humanitaire. Le Club Richelieu Embrun, représenté ci-dessus par son président Marc Ryan, a décidé de contribuer 500$ à ce projet. Jérémy Noël, Coralie Martin, Christine Blais (avant), Maegan Wall, Tyler Morissette, Diane Longtin, Marc Ryan, Estelle Goodwin et Amiguelle Laplante étaient tout sourire lors de la remise de chèque.
