spotlight on november N ow that we are midway into the last quarter of 2020, we have the U.S. election behind us and put our focus on getting ready to take 2021 head on as some businesses and industries are still trying to survive while others thrive in these new business norms. We continue to see more government restrictions added in some areas while lifting them in others as we continue to battle the second wave of the pandemic. We are also making changes, as more and more of us are now looking for ways to get out of the house and explore their own regions when we would usually be making travel plans beyond our borders. If you are one of those readers, then our conversation with Napier Outdoors is a must read for you. We had the opportunity to chat with Jamie McAvoy, Marketing, Sales and Office Manager for Napier Outdoors about the companies latest products to get you out and enjoying the great outdoors as the company celebrates an amazing milestone of 30 years of endless adventures, epic campsites and shared memories. Are you a whiskey connoisseur? If you are then you are going to want to head straight for Mingo Creek Craft Distillers in Washington, Pennsylvania for an unforgettable, authentic whiskey tasting experience. You might even get a history lesson on “The Whiskey Rebellion” from owner Jim Hough who left his career in computer science and finance to make the leap into entrepreneurship and the whiskey business. Our management team recently had a staycation and they were so impressed with their charming Hotel and Conference Centre that they knew they needed to sit down with Heidi Sponagle, Director of Sales and Celeste Baxter, General Manager to find out more about the transformation and inspiration behind the newly branded Inn on Prince Hotel and Conference Centre situated in the hub of Nova Scotia where all the major highways meet. If you know Aundrea Trevors, then you know her dedication for non-surgical medical aesthetics. Her passion for this new field of medicine is driven from seeing her clients, both men and women, achieve their self-confidence. We had the opportunity to chat up with Aundrea, which is not easy to do, and put this energetic entrepreneur “in the spotlight” to learn more about this amazing person behind Aundrea Nurse Inc. Wewant to thank all those involved in putting this issue together, as we know there are still difficult roads ahead for small and medium sized businesses. These are extremely demanding times for businesses, but we promise to keep sharing business success and the people behind making it all happen.

It is great to follow up with previously featured businesses to see how things are going and we just had that opportunity this month with Napier Outdoors when we caught up with Jamie McAvoy, Marketing, Sales and Office Manager for Napier Outdoors. We are still amazed by the story of how Roman Napieraj, the company’s founder, turned a trip to Canadian Tire store to purchase some wooden beams, a tarp, and an air mattress to create his own tent in the back of his truck as a solution for bad allergies has transformed over the years developing into an innovative company celebrating 30 years of endless adventures, epic campsites and shared memories. 76

IN THE SPOTLIGHT AUNDREA TREVORS CERTIFIED AESTHETIC NURSE SPECIALIST & OWNER OF AUNDREA NURSE INC.
by Lee Ann Atwater I f you know Aundrea, then you know her dedi- cation for non-surgical medical aesthetics. Her passion for this new field of medicine is driven from seeing her clients, both men and women, achieve the natural and youthful appearance they desire through cosmetic injectables and the impact it has on increasing their self-confidence. Spotlight on Business Magazine caught up, which is not easy to do, with this energetic entrepre- neur in between her travels between Halifax and Truro to learn more about the person behind Aundrea Nurse Inc.
I have been extremely fortunate to learn from and trained with some of the top plastic surgeons and nurses from all over the world which has given me the experience needed to be at the top of my field, but my learning journey is not over as I am currently doing my Masters degree in Nursing at Athabasca University. What made you want to become an entrepreneur and start your own business?
SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS: Tell us a little about yourself, your hobbies, what you like to do in your spare time when you are not helping clients increase their self-confidence. AT: In my spare time, I love to run! I have been running for over 20 years and it’s a great stress reliever for me. I also love to hang out with my sweet husband along with my dogs and cats. My extended family is in New Brunswick, which fortunately is within the “Atlantic Bubble” so I try to get there as often as possible to see them. Tell us how you became interested in non-surgical medical aesthetics and your journey to where you are today? AT: I have always had a strong desire to help others and to strive to make a difference in peoples’ lives. So once leaving high school I obtained a psychology degree from St.Thomas University then continued my education and went on to receive my Advanced Standing Bachelor of Nursing degree from the University of New Brunswick. After graduating from UNB, I began my career as a cardiac and mental health nurse before being introduced to the cosmetic side of medicine and immediately knew it was my calling. I have been nursing for ten years, of which nine and a half of those years, I have been a Cosmetic Aesthetic Nurse Specialist.
AT: I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and have my own freedom, make my own choices. I am not exactly where I want to be yet with my business and career, but I do feel like I am headed in the right direction.

Do you have a typical client? If so, tell us about them? If there was something that your clients have in common, what would it be? AT: I typically see women around the age of 40 years and over, who are looking for advice and nonsurgical options to help with the aging process. The most common request I get is looking natural. A lot of people are misinformed when it comes to injectables, when in fact the majority of your friends have these services done, but you just can’t tell. That’s when it’s done correctly! Tell us about some of the projects that you have worked on. AT: I sit on the board of the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Speciality Nurses (CSASN). We are a group of 6 aesthetic nurses who bring evi- dence-based education to our 190 members across Canada. We organize cadaver labs, lectures, guest speakers and regular meetings to keep our industry safe for our patients, which is always our number one concern. What motivates you as an entrepreneur and small business owner? AT: Independence and to be proud of something that is my own that I can put my heart and soul into. I consider myself as a new business owner, as I only started Aundrea Nurse Inc in 2017 so I feel like I am just getting started on my entre- preneurial journey.

“I sit on the board of the Canadian Society of Aes- thetic Speciality Nurses (CSASN).”
What was the inspiration behind Aundrea Nurse Inc? How do you keep up to date with the latest innovation and products in your industry? AT: I think I saw an opportunity and wanted to jump on it. I figured this was my chance to start my dream of owning my own business. I work with a great team of people who are all career driven individuals. Together, we attend many different trainings, Nationally and Inter- nationally to stay on top of the most up to date information. This industry is evolving quickly so it is crucial that we are always educated. The brands I was working with were certainly bigger, but they were also far less connected or concerned about the communities they were serving. A sharp contrast to the small business, and non-for-profit I had earlier worked for. I work with a great team of people who are all career driven individuals. Together, we attend many different trainings, Nationally and Inter- nationally to stay on top of the most up to date information. This industry is evolving quickly so it is crucial that we are always educated. What services do you offer? AT: My expertise lies with injecting; this is what I do the most of. Injecting neuromodualtors along with dermal fillers on the face and body. I also offer microneedling with PRP (platelet rich plasma) for scar revision and hair regrowth.
Where do you see yourself and your business 5 years from today? AT: Hopefully, I will be done with school by then which will give me more options in my field of aesthetic medicine. In 5 years, I hope to have expanded my portfolio with injectables and gain more autonomy in my practice. As a small business owner and dedicated profes- sional, Aundrea understands the power of confi - dence and how that can transform you personal- ly and business wise.

Dale Nally, the Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity for Alberta would not name the company in talks with the province, but his office confirmed it is not a state-owned entity. Nally also would not specify where the facility could be built but said it would be worth be- tween $5-billion and $10-billion and would take more than five years to build. The province recently announced a plan for a Tourism Accommodations Real Property Tax Rebate Program which will provide operators of hotels, motels and inns that qualify with a 25 per cent rebate on payment of its 2020-21 commercial property tax. NOVA SCOTIA TO LAUNCH PROGRAM OFFERING TAX RELIEF TO HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY PANDEMIC Despite pandemic-fuelled economic uncertainty that has companies across the globe cutting expenses to protect their balance sheets, Nally has said his department has spoken with several international petrochemical produc- ers eyeing Alberta as a place to do business.

Some businesses are not as fortunate and as a consequence of this prolonged shut down has pushed many to the brink and beyond. We feel the countries who have been hit particularly hard by this pandemic as well as the many tourism and service-oriented businesses who continue to suffer. This is why continuing to support local for a weekend getaway, Christmas gifts, and so forth is always so important and critical to business survival right now. Regarding the renovation and new home con- struction industry, this boom brought many positive business impacts, such as increased revenue and hopefully profits. However, it is impossible to ignore the fact that we are also experiencing adverse effects which can limit growth and impact the bottom line.
reasons. This had a tremendous impact by creating a boom in renovations and new home construction. With many isolating in their homes for months, it appears that homeowners have been paying more attention to the space around them. Many had their children home all the time and their young adults returning home which created a hectic household and they decided they needed to make a change. Whether it be improving their existing home or selling and moving to another home, the results have been incredible for the industry. With that being said, I want to express how extremely fortunate we are to be living in a region with low cases (Atlantic Canada) and oper- ating in an industry that has seen strong growth.

SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2020
Here are a few consequences of the COVID pandemic and associated boom on our industry: • Shortages of materials – As many manufacturing plants, including sawmills and wood preserv- ing facilities, had to shut down or reduce their capacity, many products are in short supply. • Long lead times – With much reduced production worldwide and many products coming from abroad, the time gap between ordering products and their delivery has doubled or tripled what they have been. With the unpredictability, this may result in logistical issues and project delays. • Labour shortage – On top of the already low unemployment in our region and limited supply of skilled trades, this boom has increased demand even more for carpenters, electricians, roofers, and so forth. Many workers remain on reduced hours or off completely with the Canadian Emer- gency Response Benefit (CERB) or the Canadian Recovery Benefit (CRB). CERB has been positive to start, but now is keeping many trades home rather than returning to full time or at all to the workplace. This has been a struggle for many companies as they have work lined up but may not have people to do the job. • Increase cost of materials – With high demand and limited supply of many building materials, we have seen prices for many products double or triple. This will cause the cost of a renovation or new home construction to increase drastically. These rapid changes cause problems especially with lump sump quotes signed contracts prior to the price increases. Companies can’t absorb these extra costs and, unfortunately, clients will see these increased costs passed along. • Unqualified contractors – With lots of potential work, many of the most reputable contractors are already booked months in advance. This allows for less qualified or even unqualified people to claim to be contractors. Yes, they are available to start projects sooner or even right away, but buyer be ware, you may want to question why?! Please be careful and don’t allow them to take advantage of you - be patient and wait for a professional. • Working from home – With many municipal staff working from home, it has been a challenge to get a permit in a timely manner. Additionally, many suppliers implemented restrictions on the number of people allowed in their facilities or require clients and contractors to make appoint- ments which add to the time required to complete projects. Even with all the above noted challenges, our industry is working hard to keep the economy rolling and ensuring projects are completed safely and professionally. Having so many people continue to work is extremely positive and contributes to the financial and mental well being of those workers and their families. There is comfort in being able to continue with daily tasks, make a living, and be productive. I can only hope that we continue to act responsibly and limit the impact on all industries, such that everyone can get back to a form of normality.

THE ULTIMATE CRAFT COOLER OUR TOP PICKS OUTTA THE ICE BUCKET FROM THE SUMMER OF 2020
by Lee Ann Atwater T he summer of 2020, well the whole year for that matter, has been an interesting one that is for sure. Spotlight on Business is usually running the roads on both sides of the border attending festivals, industry trade shows and conferences to keep on top of what is hap- pening in business and industry. Well let’s just say that COVID-19 has changed that for the time being. But one thing that has stayed the same, or increased if you look at sales numbers, is that people are still enjoying a cold craft beverage or two as we social distance and self-isolate during the pandemic. These are our top picks out of the ice bucket from the summer of 2020 that you should be enjoying all year long. The rise of “craft” brewing has re-invigorated beer’s brand within North America. Today, North American beer drinkers have access to one of the largest selections of different beer brands and styles available anywhere in the world. The “craft” sensation has not just been limited to the beer industry as we have also seen the emer- gence of a “ready to drink” sector for the craft distilling industry and just like that of the craft brewing industry, shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. As you know, if you are a reader of the magazine, we have featured many craft breweries and dis- tilleries over the years. So, with the help from recommendations, suggestions and feedback from our readers regarding what they had in their coolers and ice boxes this summer, we had our research team contact craft brewers and dis- tillers on both sides of the border throughout the summer to create our first Ultimate Craft Cooler
to spotlight some of the best Summer Craft Beers, Radlers, Sours and Tropical Beers along with Ready-to-Drink canned cocktail craft spirits in North America. We have selected thirty must have craft beers and ready-to-drink beverages from this past summer representing brands from Hawaii to Newfoundland that all have one thing in common, they need to be in your fridge, ice box or cooler to ride out what is left of 2020. Now in saying that, we wanted to make sure that it was stated, that no one on our edito- rial staff is a Cicerone and these are just our personal preferences. 127 different brands and 512 different styles and types of bever- ages were provided for this project and we believe in full disclosure, so we wanted our readers to know that no company has paid for placement for this project.
The panel was asked to use a 1.00 to 5.00-point scoring system with 0.25 increments:
4.75 - 5.00 = Best Craft Beer or Ready to Drink on the planet! 4.00 - 4.74 = These are the ones you hide so no one drinks them on you! 3.75 - 3.99 = Need to stock up on these ones! 3.50 - 3.74 = Ultimate Craft Cooler worthy! 2.80 - 3.49 = I would buy it again! 2.00 - 2.79 = Drinkable, but not something I would buy or try again.
1.00 - 1.99 = Ones you save for the guest that you want to leave early, if you know what we mean. All scores were averaged to achieve the final score, which will also be loaded on the UNTAPPD website https://untappd.com/ to the nearest quarter percent point (0.25). Once the sampling was completed the panel selected their top picks for Summer Craft Beers, Craft Radlers, Sours or Tropical Beers and Ready to Drink Craft Beverages for Spotlight on Business Mag-
azine’s 2020 Ultimate Craft Cooler. Lets start stocking the cooler!

MARIGOLD Blonde Ale – 3.50 Sober Island Brewing | Sheet Harbour, NS, Canada | https://soberislandbrewing.ca S ober Island’s nearest neighbour is the town of Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia. We say this because once you try it you will be looking for it on a map. Its history dates back to the late 1700s when some no-nonsense folks put down the roots for one of Nova Scotia’s premier logging settlements. Then, very much like now you had to be hard-working and tough-as-nails, and not much has changed. However, in 2015 it became the home for Sober Island Brewing Company. The next time you are in Nova Scotia stop by for a visit you will not be disappointed in the beer or the hospitality. Sober Island Brewing’s Marigold is an easy-drinking, smooth, and refreshing blonde ale. The Marigold flower can be found throughout Nova Scotia and it calls on sunny days ahead. These bright yellow flowers add as much colour to the landscape as this beer will add to your weekends, wherever your travels take you and this is why we picked them straight from Nova Scotia’s rugged ol’ Eastern shore to go on ice in the Ultimate Craft Cooler, the beer not the flowers.
ordering more of the following. LOST FLIP FLOP Saison | 3.50 Endeavour Brewing | St. Albert, AB Canada https://www.endeavourbrewing.com S potlight on Business Magazine featured Endeavour Brewing in our February 2020 Issue (https://online.flippingbook.com/ view/1034784/28/). If you remember that issue, then you know that opening a craft brewery was not something that the Atkins ever imagined they’d set out to do. Matt worked for 20 years as a mechanical engineer and his wife Georgia has a successful career as a junior high teacher and still teaches today. Both were well estab- lished in their fields however, an amazing experi - ence in Texas changed their perspective of what could be possible for their future and the idea for Endeavour Brewing was born. Now a reality the brewery located in St. Albert, Alberta which has been opened since 2018 has Matt and Georgia inviting you to experience their local craft beer revolution. Part of that craft beer revolution is Endeavour Brewing’s Lost Flip Flop which is the perfect patio beer or anywhere else for that matter. It is fermented with a traditional French Saison yeast, but that’s where the tradition ends remember we are talking about a craft beer revolution. Lost Flip Flop has a healthy dose of Citra and Sorachi Ace hops which gives this beer a strong citrus, lemony and tropical aroma. The aroma and flavour makes this a very refreshing beer on warm summer days when you are at the beach, at your camp in the mountains or poolside with friends and family and that is why it will be in our cooler regardless of what season we are in.

BLONDE LOGGER Blonde Ale | 3.56 Tapworks Brewing | Gibsons, BC, Canada https://www.gibsonstapworks.com S potlight on Business Magazine featured Tapworks Brewing Company in our January 2019 Issue (https://online.flippingbook.com/ view/93409/38/). We uncovered that for Geoff Gornall, co-owner of Tapworks Brewing Co., beer isn’t a hobby it a business to brew a beverage that needs to suit your lifestyle, whatever it may entail. Tapworks Brewing Company is a little ray of cheerful libation in rural town Gibsons, located on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia surround- ed by hiking trails and natural beauty, the com- munity takes pride in their environment. Gornall and partners Neil Bergman and Warren Gregory make sure they have a flavour in their brewery for every occasion. The Tapworks brand is the epitome of the west coast lifestyle, it is mountain meets ocean, meets small town. CRAFT RADLERS, SOURS & TROPICAL BEERS C raft Radlers, Sours and Tropical beers are also very drinkable like summer beers. A traditional radler combines equal parts light-colored, hoppy beer and citrus favors (grapefruit, lemon, lime etc), but nowadays you can add just about anything. However, in saying that, the flavor should still be a crisp combination of sweet and tart, with a touch of bitterness for balance. Sour beer on the other hand has an intentionally acidic, tart, or sour taste. Some people like them, and others do not, but these were our favorites.

LEMON RAZ RADLER 3.94 Russell Brewing | Surrey, BC, Canada https://www.russellbeer.com R ussell Brewing, one of the original 10 craft breweries in British Columbia, opened its doors in Surrey back in 1995. A pioneer in the craft brewing industry, Russell Brewing blazed the trail by making small batch unpasteur- ized ‘real beer’ with natural ingredients. Spotlight on Business Magazine featured Russell Brewing in our July 2020 Issue (https://online.flip - pingbook.com/view/111972/78-79/). If you had a chance to read that article you know that over the last five years, Russell Brewing have been making changes moving from just a few core brands to launching over 36 new beers in 2019 alone and continues to do so with the release of their 2020 version of Lemon Raz Radler. The new Lemon Raz Radler is definitely a con - tender for one of the best radlers out there on the market. It offers a delicious summer blend of light beer, lemons and raspberries, so make sure that that your cooler and mouth are full of these long after summer has passed.
OUR PICK FOR TOP CRAFT RADLER, SOUR OR TROPICAL BEER OF IS 2020 CRAFTY RADLER Grapefruit & Tangerine | 4.25 Pump House Brewing | Moncton, NB, Canada https://pumphousebrewery.ca T his is the one that we call the “Original” and in our humble opinion it is the best radler on the market bar none, craft or macro brewery. Pump House Brewing’s Crafty Radler - Grape- fruit & Tangerine is the perfect mix of ale and grapefruit and tangerine soda. Yes, it might be a little cloudy from the added juice, but we don’t mind and feel you will be the same. The Crafty Radler is not only the taste of summer but also the smell as once you crack one open the refresh- ing mixture gives off a smell of ripe, freshly sliced grapefruit with sweet notes of ripened tanger- ines with every drink. If this is not in your fridge or cooler than you are missing out in our opinion, enough said!
