DEVET NOVIH DESTINACIJA NINE NEW DESTINATIONS

YEAR OF NEW POSSIBILITIES . GODINA NOVIH MOGUĆNOSTI

Dragi gosti,

Dear Guests,

Conquest of sky – this is probably the best description of what we’re all doing together every day. By the time you read these words today, our airplanes will have already started ying to new destinations. Each week, starting on 1 June, our ying crew will tame clouds and winds on the routes to 49 destinations. This is how the list of cities we have connected Belgrade to gets longer. And the same goes for the list of options provided to you. We have connected the most distant places in the region, in Europe, and around the world. Now, all you have to do is choose where you want to travel. The possibilities are many, especially in addition to destinations that we y to owing to our codeshare partners. This is also the best way to celebrate this very special month for us. On 17 June, 1927, 92 years ago, our airline was founded as the 10th air carrier in Europe. For us, it is certainly a day to remember and be proud of. Mostly because we’ve been through some good and some bad times over the course of the past nine

cenija prošli i kroz lepe i kroz teške trenut- ke.

decades. Numerous records stand as proof of this, as well as stories told from generation to generation. You can read one such story in this issue, story about generations of pilots trained at our company and about people whose biggest passion was ying above the clouds. With nine new routes from Belgrade – seven regular ones to Kiev, Madrid, Barcelona, Rijeka, Krasnodar, Helsinki and

Idemo u susret novim izazovima. Kroz Berlin i Štutgart provešće vas šef-dirigent Be- ogradske filharmonije Gabrijel Felc, istovremeno najavljujući junski kon- cert na otvorenom u srpskoj prestonici. Uživajte u letu sa nama i srećan put.

Cairo, and two seasonal ones to Nice and Zadar, we are also announcing a new expansion of our network. As soon as July, we are going to introduce regular trac from the second largest airport in Serbia. One of the most beautiful cities of Serbia, Niš, will be connected to 12 new destinations – Nuremberg, Frankfurt (Hahn), Hanover, Friedrichshafen, Karlsruhe, Salzburg, Rome, Bologna, Budapest, Gothenburg, Ljubljana and Tivat. We are tackling new challenges. For you, for us, for everyone who have ying in their blood... We are ready for the upcoming challenges. To help us overcome them, we have more than 100 new members of cabin crew and 21 junior co-pilots for ATR and Airbus aircraft. Since we’re writing to you about the great news, we would also like to use the opportunity to thank our colleagues, because nothing of the aforementioned would have been possible without them. We are proud that we’ve once again shown that people are the most valuable resource of Air Serbia. This month, we’re taking you to Germany – a country of ve cities on Air Serbia’s ight agenda. Your guide through Berlin and Stuttgart will be Gabriel Feltz, chief conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic, using this opportunity to announce an open-air concert in the Serbian capital in June. Enjoy ying with us and have a nice trip!

Yours sincerely, Air Serbia

The exhibition Women’s Stories, which runs in the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art until 1st July, deals with the presenting and affirming of young artists on our art scene. Unburdened by the history of feminist activism, socio-political struggles for greater rights and gender equality, young female authors face some personal struggles and reconsiderations of their identity, as women and as artists. Those presented include Gorana Bačevac, Svetlana Bulatović, Sanja Ćopić, Andrea Dramićanin, Jelena Pantelić, Nadežda Kirćanski and Tijana Radenković.

Pariz Muzej istorije parfema

Paris Perfume history museum

The French capital was recently enriched with another museum. This institution is dedicated to the history of perfume, which was used as a ritual during burials 3,000 years ago, to cover up unpleasant odours during medieval times, only to today represent pleasure and luxury. Exhib- ited in this museum are various vessels that once held perfumes, such as metal containers or bottles with strongly fragrant ingredients.

U ovoj jedinstvenoj sobi moguće je čekićem, šipkom i bejzbol palicom razbiti printer, staklene i knauf ploče, i to bez griže savesti.

The rst room for breaking the contents, “Smashit”, has opened in Zagreb, and in it visitors can, at least for a short time, free them- selves of their accumulated stress. In this unique room, it is possi- ble to use a hammer, metal pole or baseball to smash break a print- er, and glass and Knauf tiles, and to do so without feeling guilty. Visitors receive protective equipment, while the cost of using the Smashit room varies depending on what’s been broken and how long it took. Only time will tell whether this type of anti-stress thera- py will really help people.

KAFU U AVIONU I ADORE COFFEE ABOARD A PLANE Tekst / Words: Biljana Stefanović Fotografije / Photography: Aleksandar Dimitrijević

BEZ ČEGA NE ULAZITE U AVION? Bez dobrog raspoloženja. Obožavam da putujem i uvek se radujem novim predelima i saznanjima. U avionu uvek ose- ćam malu tremu i uzbuđenje zbog puta. WHAT DON’T YOU BOARD A PLANE WITHOUT? Without a good mood. I adore travelling and always rejoice in new regions and discoveries. Aboard a plane I always feel that slight trembling and excitement because of the journey. And, yes, I love coee on a plane, I really enjoy it. WHICH JOURNEY HAS REMAINED FOREVER ETCHED IN YOUR MEMORY? U, there have been many, both private and work related. Perhaps going to Australia with my mother when I was a high school pupil, or the rst trip with my husband, Stefan, to Istanbul and the busi- ness trip to New York and Los Angeles. These three journeys are special for me, though I have wonderful memories of all of them. WHAT DO YOU LOVE BELGRADE? Because it’s my city, where I was born and where my parents come from. It is the world’s most beautiful city and it was there I met the man of my life and gave birth to two wonderful chil- dren. How could I not love it with all these wonderful things that it has given me?

The inaugural edition of a new festival, the Biennale of New European Drama, will be held in Belgrade from 23 rd to 29 th June, under the organisation of the Heartefact Fund, a regional foundation that encourages the creation of a free democratic society and European cooperation T he Biennial of New European drama, as a continua- tion of the most important and most prestigious Eu- ropean festival Neue Stücke aus Europa [New Plays from Europe], dedicated to dramatic writing, is a space for the future engagement and armation of new authors and poetics. The goal is to utilise this platform, continuous- ly, including between two editions of the festival, to provide space for work, education, the attempts and even mistakes that arise with the experience of the festival itself. Also in fo- cus will be various aspects of production, from setting plays on stage to translating them into other languages and other contexts, which are often extremely important for the life of a play,”says Andrej Nosov, CEO of Heartefact, a regional foun- dation that encourages the creation of a free society and Eu- ropean cooperation, talking to Elevate. In which way does our country recognise and support initiatives like yours? “Heartefact’s initiative found the support of the state, but what I think is that, alongside nancial support, it is also impor- tant to have comprehensive change that would, at systemic level, lead to changes in the setting up and running of theatres in our country. We really desperately need a production fund and a large space for new ideas and productions. Launching the national platform Serbia Creates, which emerged at the

initiative of Prime Minister Brnabić, is a step in that direction. This platform aims to systemically improve the creative in- dustries sector, as well as strengthen- ing cultural diplomacy and positioning Serbia as a country of creative, innova- tive and authentic people and ideas.”

How important is it for Serbia to position itself inter- nationally with these kinds of festivals, but also to pro- mote itself? “Cooperation is the key word. We’ve already collected and systematised the knowhow of the leading stakeholders (writ- ers, dramatists, producers, artistic directors and theatre manag- ers) in dramatic theatre from Europe. The Biennial also emerg- es as a response to the social and political crisis of European ideas. In this collaboration and exchange, the key is to posi- tion Belgrade as a city that represents an important place on the map of European theatres.” The Heartefact Fund is commemorating 10 years of its existence. In your opinion, what are the fund’s most sig- nicant successes in the previous decade? “Over thirty independent productions, three-digit num- bers of prizes, translations, guest performances and exchang- es with European partners. The most serious competition in contemporary drama texts at the region level, numerous new forms of multimedia and media content, and over a thousand authors and artists who’ve worked with us. Most importantly, we enter our 11th year with a clear idea of the Biennial of New European Drama, as a signicant and great undertaking and idea that we will develop and lead in our second decade.”

ER SRBIJA IZ NIŠA LETI KA NOVIH DESTINACIJA AIR SERBIA FLYING FROM NIŠ TO 12 NEW DESTINATIONS

A ir Serbia CEO Duncan Naysmith and Serbian Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Zorana Mihajlović have signed a contract on the granting of 12 routes of public im- portance (PSO). The flights from Niš’s Constantine the Great Airport will be conducted by the Serbian national airline, with the con- tract signed after an international tender that saw the only appropri- ate bid submitted by Air Serbia. The Government of Serbia has secured budget funds to compensate for the costs of air transport services, so new lines are expected to be launched, as of 15th July, from the air- port in Niš to Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Rome, Hanover, Ljubljana, Salz- burg, Bologna, Budapest, Gothenburg, Friedrichshafen, Karlsruhe and Tivat. The contract signing ceremony was also attended by Air Serbia’s Executive Director for Cooperation with State Bodies and Organisa- tions, Branislav Malović, and Assistant Transport Minister Zoran Ilić. Assistant Transport Minister Ilić announced that the Government of Serbia brought the decision to introduce lines of public interest, which is in accordance with European practises and regulations, in or- der to provide assistance to less developed regions. “In this way, we’re encouraging the faster economic development of southern and eastern Serbia, connecting with our diaspora, where an estimated 1.2 million people from our country live, as well as en- couraging the further development of tourism. I believe that busi- nesses and citizens from the southern and eastern regions will be sat- isfied,” said Ilić.

T his 17 th June again we remember magnicent beginnings, the same date almost a century ago, when in 1927 in the Palace of the Adriatic-Danube Bank in Bel- grade, Aeroput was founded as the country’s rst joint-stock compa- ny for civil aviation. Aeroput was among the world’s rst civilian air- lines, as the 10t h such company in Europe and the 21 st in the world. Air Serbia, which has continued this magnicent journey in the sky after the glory years of JAT, proud- ly continues along the paths of its great predecessors. The Ser- bian airline welcomed the 92th anniversary of Serbian aviation as on of the leaders in region and company that ies to more than 50 destinations. SERBIA IS 92 YEARS OLD HAPPY BIRTHDAY: AIR

TRI PILOTA, TRI GENERACIJE JEDNA KOMPANIJA THREE PILOTS, THREE GENERATIONS ONE AIRLINE PORODICA U KOJOJ SU SVI ROĐENI DA LETE FAMILY IN WHICH EVERYONE’S BORN TO FLY

Only someone who couldn’t be anything else can be a pilot. Someone who has always dreamt of ying and who, if they lived three lives, would always choose spending time above the clouds. In the Jevđević family, this passion has been inherited by as many as four generations, and seems to be deeply embedded in their genetic code

E verything started with great-grand- father Miloš, who was a pilot, and a military one at that, and whose love for planes was passed to Slobodan, his son, then to his grandson, Branislav, and en nally to great-grandfather’s namesake – little Miloš, who already has his captain’s hat and is waiting to grow up just so he can sit in the cockpit like his forefathers. And granddad Slobodan spent as long as 37 years, from 1969 to 2002, at Air Ser- bia, or rather its predecessor companies. Everything started for him as early as pri- mary school, when he made model planes from chipboard. He lied to his mother and went o to learn to y a glider, which was an experience he’d never forget... “The rst time I took ight was more than 50 years ago, at 6.04am. I was alone, the clouds were bathed in the rising sun, and I cried from happiness and the beau- ty. As circumstances would have it, I later trained to become a motor pilot, became the manager of the aero club, gained expe- rience as a skydiver and quickly advanced, but I always dreamt of becoming a military aviation pilot. I loved to y, but to lead a bat- tle up there above the clouds, that was a dream,” we are told by Slobodan, who en- rolled in the pilots school as one of the 30 accepted students; as many as 1,300 had applied. He completed the school and paid him- self for all further training, enriching his pi- lot’s license. He started ying a piston plane for 52 passengers, completed co-pilot train- ing, and in less than two years became a captain. “We kept out of the way so the pas- sengers wouldn’t see how young we are, so they wouldn’t by scared that they were being own by kids [laughs]. And for me it was fascinating to y from one end of the world to the other, to take o in the dark and land in the dark. I was only 35 when I sat at the controls of the largest aircraft in the world, the DC 10, and I did the job so well that I soon also became an instructor, and it was from that position that I retired,” recalls Slobodan. Asked what ying means to him, he says with adoration that still lasts – hap- piness, beauty, satisfaction, sublimity, but also the feeling that you’re dierent from others, that you have to react faster and better, always in every situation, in every second that’s demanded of you. “When you y, you acquire some spe- cial senses that an ordinary man doesn’t have; you notice some things... a pilot’s li- cense is only valid for six months and you are constantly being checked... If I were to be born again, I would again be a pilot, even if only on a small plane that sprays mosqui-

come a pilot, and when he becomes a pi- lot”.That’s how I went o to learn to y,”says Branislav, who has been infected with a love for ying since he was little, having circled the entire globe with his father. However, it was a feeling that he had on one rather unpleasant ight that fortied his convic- tion that he was born to be a pilot. “It was a Singapore-Sydney ight and I’ll never forget it. I was sitting in the cock- pit, because that was then possible, and the copilot had the controls. We suddenly entered literal darkness, there was an in- credible storm, everything was shaking and banging around, we had to land, the lights lit up, dad took over the controls and land- ed the plane. I was then 12 years old and everyone in myplace would have said‘thank God that we survived’, while I thought ‘I’d like to experience this again’,”says Branislav, who has been with the airline since 2002 and a captain on Airbus aircraft since 2015. When you hear such stories and feel such passion, it’s no wonder that another de- scendant of the Jevđevićs wants to y.

toes, concludes granddad Slobodan, who enjoys his well-deserved retirement, but also the fact that his son Branislav has fol- lowed in his footsteps, and that his grand- son is preparing to do likewise… It’s no wonder that Branislav started ying like his father given that he spent so much time in the cockpit as a boy and toured almost the whole world. Also like his father, he told his mother a little lie... “Everything started for me in 1991, at the Academy in Vršac, when I’d just turned 16. I got my rst sports pilot license two years later and completed the academy in 1997. When I wanted to enrol in the school, I didn’t have enough money and I told my mum that we would go on holiday, when I was in fact trying to sell my motorbike and collect the 3,000 Deutschmarks that it cost at the time. When my father, who was then in Brazil, heard what was happening, he decided to give me the money that I was lacking. I remember the sentence he said to my mum: “one becomes a pilot twice in life - when a man makes a decision to be-

WHY DID MARVEL KILL

OUR TONY STARK?

O ne of the greatest imagined lm univers- es of all time has reached breaking point in the latest Avengers: Endgame lm. It isn’t accidental in the slightest that we are talking about a split, because this in no way rep- resents the end (far from it). This Russo brothers’lm changes everything we’ve so far seen from Marvel at the foundational level and heralds the start of a com- pletely dierent direction. In the meantime, every fan of the world of heroes received at least a fraction of what they were seeking in Endgame, because this lm again tried to reconcile the myriad superheroes in such a way that no one felt neglected. This was done with some compromises, but packaged into this 181 minutes are references to all the lms we’ve watched so far. Marvel’s lm universe has released 22 lms in 11 years, and the dynamics are similar to those characteristic of the comic strip industry (the older but even more gloried precursor to this universe). This means that Marvel learned from its own exam- ple, and the measure was top quality. It is clear that no other lm studio or comic company can keep up. Kevin Feige became the head of the studio in 2008 and represented the embodiment of that which the Marvel universe required. A man with a clear vi-

The third stage closed with the lm Avengers: Endgame, while we will receive a kind of postscript in July with Spider-Man: Far from home, which will bring the total time of all Marvel lms since 2008 to a running time of precisely 3,000 minutes. This is poor consolation, because whatever phase four brings, it will not include everyone’s favourite hero: the witty and brilliant Tony Stark, who was embodied so wonderfully by Robert Downey Jr. that he seems to have become Iron Man’s alter ego

sion, organised, methodical, dedicated and - above all - a huge fan of comics, he came up with a formu- la for success: to launch a new franchise every year and to continue existing ones with occasional“cross- overs”, i.e. lms that bring together multiple charac- ters (such as Avengers). Every lm managed to out- perform the previous release... And it all began with the famous Iron Man, which was the rst to change the view of such lms and lead to them no longer be- ing classied as mere entertainment for the young- est. The culmination of the rst phase was simulta- neously also its end: Avengers - the rst lm of its kind to present all the glamour and tribulations of superheroes, especially when it is necessary to rec- oncile so many egomaniacs. The second phase began with the nal instal- ment of Iron Man and ended with the rst appear- ance of Ant-Man, which has long been considered one of the greatest reboots of the entire galaxy of heroes. The third phase opened with Captain Amer- ica: Civil War, with the conict between the two main characters (Tony Stark and Steve Rogers) dividing the biggest lovers of comics for a couple of years. Never- theless, all hatchets were buried at exactly the right time, and a full-stop was placed on the end of the
