blessures a diminué de 26 pour cent l’an dernier.
Un total de 80 rapports de blessure ont été soumis durant 2011 selon un rapport
soumis par le directeur du département des ressources humaines, Jonathan Roy. De ce
nombre, 35 employés ont subi une perte de salaire suite à une lésion ou une maladie et
45 employés ont eu un incident qui ne nécessitait aucun soin de santé et aucune perte de gain.

“The widening of the 174 will significantly reduce commute times for our residents,” Blais said. Liberal MPPs for the two ridings, Grant Crack and Phil McNeely, both emphasized that the EA will both address traffic safety concerns for area residents and also serve as a guide for future transport improvement projects for the Ottawa-Orléans area. “So the right decision can be made for the future widening of the highway,” said Crack, “to make commuting safer and easier.” “This (EA) will enable the community to study all the options available,” said McNeely, adding that future light-rapid transit systems for the Ottawa region will receive due attention during the EA’s two- year consultation period. During his announcement, Chiarelli gave credit to Jean-Marc Lalonde, former MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, “for the trailblazing he has done”. The minister noted that Lalonde had promoted and lobbied for expansion and upgrading of the highway link between Orléans and Rockland during all the years that he sat in the legislature. Chiarelli also noted that the April 10 announcement on EA funding for the 174- 17 expansion project is the latest portion of a $620-million investment from the pro- vincial government in highway improvements projects around the Greater Ottawa Area. That upgrades to several portions of Highway 417 and Highway 7 west of the city and translates into 10,000 present and future jobs.
Drizzling rain dripped Tuesday morning down off the small awning set up at the Park-n-Ride in Orléans at the intersection of Highway 174 and Trim Road. Huddled underneath, local politicians cheered and clapped as Highways Minister Bob Chiarelli confirmed another $1 million for an environmental study on widening the highway connection between Orléans and Rockland to four-lane status. “That will be a tremendous improvement for the people of this area,” Chiarelli said. “Looking at what this opens up is a whole bunch of sunshine as far as Prescott- Russell is concerned,” said François St-Amour, warden for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR). Several years ago, both the provincial and federal governments committed $40 million each towards the future costs of improving the Highway 174-County Road 17 route between Orléans and Rockland. At that time the province was also prepared to provide $5 million for the environmental assessment (EA) required before construction could begin but, because the City of Ottawa at that time refused to be involved in management of the study, that funding aid offer was withdrawn and the future of the proposed four-lane expansion of the route sat in limbo. La coopérative a affiché de bons résul- tats financiers au terme de l’exercice qui s’est terminé le 31 décembre 2011. Les excédents, avant impôts et ristournes, se sont élevés à 8 203 000 dollars, ce qui représente une hausse de 17,3 % par rap- port à l’année précédente. La Caisse se retrouve ainsi en bonne position dans son marché affichant un volume d’affaires sous gestion de 1 099 086 300 dollars, une hausse de 4,7 % com- parativement à 2011. L’épargne de placement s’est accrue de 38 381 500 dol- lars, pour atteindre 505 120 000 dollars. Finalement, l’actif global de la Caisse a augmenté de 37 097 000 dollars pour s’éta- blir à 531 941 000 dollars, soit une hausse de 7,5 % par rapport à l’an dernier. « L’année 2011 aura été une année de renfor- cement pour notre Caisse, souligne Normand Leroux, directeur général de la Caisse populaire Trillium. Renforcement de notre base de capital, renforcement de notre appui au développement économi- que de la région et renforcement de notre relation avec nos sociétaires et clients. » Appui à la communauté Au cours de l’année 2011, la Caisse a contribué à la réussite de plusieurs événe- ments et projets pour plus de 200 organismes de la communauté. Près de 150 000 dollars ont été investis dans la communauté. « […] nous continuerons, année après année, d’encourager des or- ganismes de chez nous », a confié Ronald Tourigny. La coopérative, en lien avec sa mission d’éducation et de développement socio- économique, a également remis un don de 50 000 dollars au Centre Wabano Mamawi dans le cadre du Fonds d’aide au dévelop- pement du milieu. Ce centre, qui offre entre autres des soins de santé aux Autochto- nes, à lancé une campagne de financement majeure pour la construction d’un Centre d’excellence national pour répondre aux besoins de cette clientèle. « […] Ce Centre va contribuer au développement social, économique et communautaire du quar- tier Vanier », a commenté M. Tourigny.
La Caisse populaire Trillium versera une ristourne de 600 000 dollars à ses sociétaires particuliers et entreprises cette année, et ce, après trois années d’absence. L’annonce a été faite le 10 avril dernier dans le cadre de l’assemblée générale annuelle de l'institution financière. « L’approche adoptée par la Caisse, celle de privilégier l’équilibre et la prudence dans le partage de ses bénéfices, s’est avérée très pertinente en 2011, a souligné Ronald Tourigny, président du conseil d’adminis- tration. D’ailleurs, un montant de 1 million de dollars en ristourne a aussi été prévu au budget pour l’année financière 2012.» Depuis les huit dernières années, la Caisse populaire Trillium a distribué 3 505 000 dollars à ses membres sous forme de ristourne.

Property tax notices are in the mail now and while homeowners might grumble, local governments continue to lobby the province on how land values are assessed. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) is supporting a resolution from the City of Waterloo for another review of how the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) does its job. The resolution demands that MPAC have “sufficient resources” to make sure it meets its own “stated service standard” to process assessment reviews within a six- month period after occupancy on residential property and that same stan- dard apply in future to all commercial, industrial, and multi-unit residential properties. It also calls on MPAC to guarantee local input on assessment reviews at its local offices to help prevent delayed assessments that can have an im- pact on municipal property tax revenue.

Ekdahl is lobbying for public recognition of the value of bees, and the apiary industry, to agriculture and to the world at large. He has gained the support of the Saskatchewan provincial government and six other provincial legislatures, which have declared May 29 as Day of the Honey Bee, and Ekdahl is pressing the federal government to declare the day a national event in Canada. The UCPR economic development and tourism committee and its agricultural advisory committee both urged the counties council to join the more than 70 other mu- nicipal governments across Canada in declaring May 29 as Honey Bee Day.

Bees are the main reason all flowering plants are able to reproduce and grow because they pollinate the flowers as they buzz from blossom to blossom on their nectar-collection trips for their hives. "It was a 'By Youth For Youth' memorial," said Gil. "We started on time and everything was well in order ahead of schedule." The Battle of Vimy Ridge is often described as one of the turning points in Canadian history, a period in time when Canadians proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the world. "I think that Vimy Ridge has grown into a legend," Gil said. "A real hero story." In 1917, one year before anyone knew that the "War to End All Wars" would at last be over, the German forces were dug into Vimy Ridge, considered a key terrain point overlooking No-Man's Land. First the French, and then the British, attempted, and failed to take the ridge from the Germans. The task was then handed over to the Canadians who, under General Arthur Currie, devised a primary that seemed both revolutionary and suicidal. The day of the attack, allied guns began a "creeping barrage" of shellfire that drove the Germans deep in hiding in their trenches. When they emerged, they were staring at the bayonets of the Canadian soldiers who had marched in the shadow of that thundering barrage to surprise the enemy. Vimy Ridge earned Canadian soldiers their first nickname: The Stormtroopers.
For a dozen members of the Casselman Army Cadets corps it was an honour they would never forget. One by one they took their turns at half- hour watches at the War Memorial in Ottawa, standing guard through the blustery April weather Sunday night until Monday morning, to honour the memory of the members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who fought, died, or survived the Battle for Vimy Ridge almost a century ago. The board also reviewed information from the Toronto Foundation for Student Success that indicates being able to achieve Grade 10 in high school is a good predictor on the chances of a student making gradua- tion. The foundation’s research also indicated that a good morning breakfast correlates with student academic achievement and graduation rates. The board voted to support a resolution from the Ontario Public School Boards As- sociation (OPSBA) calling on the federal
government to create a national nutrition program that would operate through the health and agriculture ministries. The focus of the program would be to ensure all students in schools have a healthy breakfast at the start of their school day with the twin goals of ensuring good nutri- tion and reducing the risk of obesity. The OPSBA wants the federal government to work with various stakeholder groups in the country, including those representing the agricul- ture and health sectors, on programs that both stimulate economic development while also ensuring good nutrition for children in school.
The old adage has it that breakfast is the most important part of the day. Some think that a good breakfast may be the key to whether or not some students are able to graduate. The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) wants the federal government to set up a national nutrition program for children. UCDSB trustees noted during a recent session that Canada is one of the few industrialized countries in the world that does not have a national nutrition program for children and youth.
