AN INSIGHTFUL CONVERSATION WITH THEMBA OBED KUBHEKA AKA TIMADEEP

P roaudio Sound Press Magazine (PSP): How did your journey in music production commence? TimAdeep: It all began around 2013 and 2015, but it took a serious turn in 2015 when I personally immersed myself in the world of production. I was introduced to music production software by one of my peers in Hip Hop and House Music. The complexity of it initially made me quit and return until I gradually got the hang of it. My passion for music production truly ignited when I moved to Pretoria for my studies. PSP: Could you tell us about your association with Mr. Masia, the Godfather of Deep House SA? TimAdeep: Mr. Masia played a significant role in shaping my career right from the start of my journey as one of the Godsons. He is a master who uplifted his students, providing us with invaluable guidance. I have learned so much from him, and I continue to venture forward using his wisdom to flourish and establish my brand as an Artist/Music Producer.

Collaborating with them has been an honor, expanding my brand and opening doors for me. They've showcased my music on prominent stages locally and internationally, and I'm grateful for the recognition I've gained in the underground music scenes. PSP: Can you shed some light on your experience working with international labels? TimAdeep: Working with international labels has been a great experience. There's a notable difference in terms of releases and professionalism compared to local labels. The benefits are greater, and these labels invest significantly in marketing. I'm content with the labels I've released music with so far. They play a crucial role in my growth as an artist, including the local labels. PSP: What are some challenges and rewards you've encountered while working with international labels? TimAdeep: One significant challenge is their selectiveness. Not all songs align with their catalog, requiring a specific style to be able to release with them. However, this also encourages uniqueness. On the flip side, the benefits of international releases are immense — you are exposed to a global audience, the marketing team promotes you extensively, and sales are usually higher when the label is well-known.

PSP: How has your experience been collaborating with him and the team?

TimAdeep: Working with Mr. Masia and the team has been both fruitful and challenging. Despite the ups and downs, I find joy in their satisfaction with the end results.

sound press October 2023 |

PSP: Could you share some of the local labels you've collaborated with?

TimAdeep: I've had the pleasure of collaborating with various local labels including;

✓ Garden Co., ✓ Silhouette Sounds, ✓ Candid Beings, ✓ Stay True Sounds, ✓ Jones Family Records, ✓ Ace Ends Production, ✓ Groove On Records, ✓ Abstract Mood Music, ✓ Views Recordings,

Redemial Tunes,

TDGrooves Records,

Vynalist Records,

Selebogo Capital Records,

Theko Entertainment,

Soul Candi Records,

In2Deep Records,

and The Godfathers of Deep House SA.

PSP: What music production software do you primarily use?

TimAdeep: My main production software is Fruity Loops, and I'm also in the process of learning how to use Ableton.

PSP: What are your future plans for your music career?

TimAdeep: I'm currently working on releasing my debut album soon, and I'm also excited about the prospect of establishing my own label.

PSP: What goals are you aiming to achieve in the future?

TimAdeep: One of my top priorities as an artist is to gig both locally and internationally, sharing my musical journey with aspiring talents and creating timeless music that resonates for generations.

sound press | October 2023

PSP: What advice would you give to budding artists aspiring to follow in your footsteps? TimAdeep: The most valuable lesson I've learned is to respect the process. Rushing to the finish line is not the solution; it took me a while to accept that. To fellow upcoming artists, I would say have a passion and commit your heart to it. Your unique sound will evolve over time, and that will be your signature for life. Experiment, find your subgenre, and attract the right audience. Avoid making excuses, procrastinating, comparisons, taking uninformed advice to heart, succumbing to perfectionism, and seeking validation. Remember, music is bigger than us.

PSP: Could you share your favorite performance venues and what sets them apart? TimAdeep: The venues I've enjoyed performing at the most and still consider the best for music are Deep Town Jozi, We House Sundays, and Dope Room. These venues appreciate the music I create and play for them, creating a remarkable experience for both the audience and me.

PSP: What does an average day look like for you?

TimAdeep: I dedicate most of my time to my bedroom studio, working on projects to sustain myself financially and upgrading my equipment. Additionally, I spend time mentoring those seeking guidance in music design, hacks, flexibility, and engaging with my audience on various social media platforms and websites I utilize. I'm also involved in alternative production pursuits like graphics.

A BIG thank you to Themba Obed Kubheka (TimAdeep) for sharing his insightful journey and valuable insights with Proaudio Sound Press Magazine.

THE EVOLUTION OF FINGER DRUMMING A Fusion of Tradition and Technology

Finger drumming, a captivating performance technique blending traditional drumming principles with modern technology, has been gaining substantial attention among DJs and drummers. In this article, we delve into the roots, present landscape, and future potential of finger drumming, offering insights for those looking to embark on this exciting musical journey.

WHAT IS FINGER DRUMMING? Finger drumming is the amalgamation of traditional drumming techniques and cutting-edge technology. Performers use their fingers to trigger samples on MIDI controllers, DJ equipment, samplers, or drum machines, crafting anything from simple drum rhythms to complete compositions. These samples encompass one-shot drum sounds, notes, and chords, enabling the creation of melodies and harmonies. It's worth noting that when performers use melodies, the technique often delves into "tone play," a close relative of finger drumming originating from turntablism.

In theory, finger drumming is applicable to any music genre, as the performance pads serve as a versatile canvas ready to be loaded with any sample type. However, finger drumming is most closely associated with hip-hop, tracing its lineage back to producers in the 1990s crafting beats on samplers like the AKAI MPC. Nevertheless, finger drumming transcends boundaries, fitting into various genres. The core essence often revolves around "broken" music styles, where the interplay of kick and snare lends itself well to finger drumming. Yet, the beauty lies in the absence of strict rules.

sound press | October 2023

Finger drummers vary in their approach to performance, ranging from those who play along to loops or backing tracks, focusing solely on the drums, to purists who perform every element live, including bass, drums, and melodic elements. The finger drumming community thrives online, gathering enthusiasts worldwide for festivals, events, tournaments, and workshops. Social media platforms, particularly Instagram and TikTok, provide a perfect stage for showcasing finger drumming skills. Moreover, finger drumming isn't limited to standalone performances — it often complements DJ sets and live acts, offering a blend of musical disciplines. THE ROOTS OF FINGER DRUMMING The precise origins of finger drumming are challenging to pinpoint. The precursor to modern finger drumming can be traced to the use of pad- samplers in '90s hip-hop production, notably the MPC by AKAI. Producers like J Dilla would drum their beats on the MPC, establishing a distinctive swung sound. Going further back, drummers like Joe Morello in 1967 showcased early finger drumming in a drum solo. Influential performances in the early 2000s, such as DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and DJ Numark's "Pushing Buttons," integrated finger drumming techniques into their routines, blurring the lines between turntablism and finger drumming. Erykah Badu, a prominent R&B and soul artist, showcased finger drumming techniques as early as 2008 in her performances, highlighting the technique's roots in live drum machine solos.

However, it was the wave of viral videos between 2007 and 2012 featuring performers like araabMUZIK, Jeremy Ellis, and David “Fingers” Haynes that brought finger drumming to the forefront. These videos, often shot in close-up, captured the imagination of viewers, showcasing the exciting possibilities of finger drumming. FINGER DRUMMING TODAY Over the past decade, finger drumming has gained substantial popularity, propelled by the growth of social media and video sharing platforms. Online communities and platforms like Sample Music Festival, Goldie Awards, and King Of Flip battle have emerged as meeting grounds for finger drummers, turntablists, and digital music performers. These platforms host competitions, workshops, and showcases, fostering a sense of community and encouraging new talent. Education and learning have become more accessible with apps like Melodics, which gamify the learning process and provide a structured approach to mastering finger drumming skills. Artists like Beats by Jblack have not only showcased their expertise but are also passing on their knowledge through online academies, nurturing the next generation of finger drummers.

sound press October 2023 |

While the finger drumming scene is gradually gaining prominence and attracting more interest online, it remains a niche domain. However, with the rise of social media platforms like TikTok, finger drumming is poised to reach a broader global audience in the coming years. THE LEARNING JOURNEY Learning finger drumming begins with grasping the fundamentals and understanding the basic drumming rudiments. Practicing along to favorite tracks and starting with a preferred music style can enhance accuracy, speed, endurance, and confidence in finger drumming. The beauty of finger drumming lies in its accessibility, making it open to anyone, regardless of a musical background. Aspiring finger drummers can explore numerous online resources, tutorials, and lessons to kickstart their journey. THE FUTURE OF FINGER DRUMMING The trajectory of finger drumming is following a similar path to turntablism and scratching, gradually gaining recognition and acceptance in the music world. As DJs seek to distinguish their performances, the versatility of pads in finger drumming offers endless creative possibilities. The competitive and communal aspects of finger drumming will continue to attract new talents and drive performers to innovate new methods.

sound press | October 2023

Finger drumming is expected to integrate more live elements into performances, resonating with audiences seeking authentic live musicianship combined with DJ artistry. While the wave of finger drumming is still rising, when it breaks, it has the potential to revolutionize the music landscape, leaving a lasting mark. Finger drumming is more than just a performance technique; it's an evolving art form that blends traditional drumming with modern technology, showcasing the creative potential of live electronic music. As the scene continues to grow and innovate, we eagerly await the exciting future of finger drumming, anticipating how it will shape the way we experience and enjoy music.

Holly Rey

Harmonizing Life's Rhythms

P roaudio Sound Press (PSP): Holly, it's a pleasure to have you with us. Let's start by discussing some legal challenges in the music industry. Can you share specific challenges you've encountered in your music career in South Africa and how you handled them? Holly Rey: The first agreement I ever entered was the most challenging. Since then, I've learned that going into anything with your eyes wide open is essential. Challenges then become more like disagreements because there is always a solution. PSP: What advice would you give to emerging South African artists to navigate legal issues in the music industry effectively? Holly Rey: Legal contracts are like pre-nups. You need to understand how you're going to get into a 'marriage' with a contract and, if things don't work out, know how you'll get out of that relationship.

PSP: Balancing health and a demanding schedule in the music industry is crucial. How do you manage your health and well- being amidst a hectic schedule, especially during tours and performances? Holly Rey : Balance is key. I've learned the hard way that finding downtime for rest is just as important as doing what you love. RCF ARENA 2023 A Summer of Unforgettable Concerts

R eggio Emilia, Italy - The second concert season at the RCF Arena was adorned by major international and Italian music superstars. Supporting each event, both as the main PA system and/or delay lines, were the acclaimed performances of the new premium line array TT+ Audio GTX, ensuring top-level sound coverage across the entire audience area. The event calendar kicked off in June with the vibrant blues of Zucchero, who held two concerts for an audience of 40,000 seated spectators each. A few days later, the special charity concert "Italia Loves Romagna" raised 3 million euros for the victims of the devastating floods that struck Emilia- Romagna at the beginning of the month.

Thanks to the sponsorship provided by RCF and other brands, 100% of ticket sales were donated to the cause. The evening featured performances by some of the biggest names in Italian music, including Laura Pausini, Salmo, Elodie, Gianni Morandi, Blanco, Elisa, Emma, Giorgia, Luciano Ligabue, Madame, Fiorella Mannoia, Zucchero, Negramaro, Max Pezzali, Tananai, Andrea Bocelli, and the duo Irama & Rkomi. Other major events filled the Arena's lawn, including Harry Styles' mega-concert, attracting 100,000 fans from all over Europe, and an impressive 80,000 spectators for the up-and-coming band Pinguini Tattici Nucleari. The season concluded with the event 'La Festa,' featuring performances by Daniele Silvestri, Manuel Agnelli, and comedian Giuseppe Giacobazzi.
