Welcome to the final edition of the school magazine which brings this very busy academic year to a close. It has been a very busy half term, full of trips and competitions. We were particularly delighted that we were able to have all the school out for Sports Day this year, with so many students taking part. In our end of term House Assembly, students in Seacole were particularly pleased to celebrate their first victory in the House Cup for many years. Other highlights include our Summer Festival. This celebration of our students’ various talents was organised by our Performing Arts department and centred around a Rock and Roll theme. Guests were treated to music covers ranging from Queen through to Coldplay (and also included a memorable tribute to the late Tina Turner). Various drama and dance pieces also embodied both the excellent high standards of performance as well as the considerable rehearsal hours dedicated to making the evening a success. I would like to thank everyone involved including the teachers, performers and the PTA who provided much needed refreshments. We also all enjoyed our Year 7 Culture Afternoon, led by our Year 9 students who were supported by Mrs Dhir and Mrs Browning, and a number of other staff. It was fantastic to see our Waldegrave Charter in action with students leading the way in celebrating their own cultural heritages with the support of many staff. Students led sessions on the Arabic Alphabet, life in Jordan, Azerbaijani food, Caribbean Dance, Canadian Dream Catcher making and how to play Aussie rules football. I would like to wish you all the very best summer and look forward to continuing to work with you all in the new academic year. - Ms Tongue

We are incredibly proud to announce our new House Captain Team for 2023-24. We are very confident that the team will fulfill their roles dutifully. Our newly appointed Head Girl, Kate W, has commented: “I am so happy to have been appointed to the role of head girl! It is a true privilege to be given this opportunity and I look forward to representing the school and the student body next year. I will do my very best to be a great head girl at Waldegrave and to make the most of my final year here.”

Congratulations to Hannah in Year 12 who won a scholarship from the Master of World Traders and used the funds to host a charity event for Beat Eating Disorders which took place at Elleray Hall in Teddington and raised just over £1000. Hannah arranged the whole event herself including venue search, catering, musicians, and also sourced some fantastic raffle prizes from the local community. She managed to create a true community vibe whilst raising money for a really good cause.

The experience gave Hannah the opportunity to build on leadership skills, assemble and work with a team as well as manage a budget and schedule - invaluable skills when she enters the workforce.

Hannah's Just Giving page is still accepting donations should anyone wish to contribute!

During this time of year, our Year 12 students are at a crucial juncture in their educational journey. They are faced with the question of what their next steps will be after leaving us. To help with this, we invited back our Waldegrave alumni to offer some advice to our current Sixth Formers. Not only did this prove incredibly valuable for our students, but it was also a lovely opportunity for the staff of Waldegrave to catch up with our alumni and hear about the amazing successes they have gone on to achieve.

Our Year 7s had a brilliant afternoon getting involved in a session of Zumba. Students were eager to participate in this event which was organised by the

Lepra charity as a thank you to Waldegrave for their incredible fundraising efforts. The hall was filled with a burst of energy and enthusiasm as the hosts took to the stage delivering an unforgettable afternoon. The students in particular loved the chance of being brought up on stage to show off their new moves!

Year 7 spent an afternoon learning about different cultures through a range of different workshops delivered by some of our Year 9 students. There were workshops on a wide range of subjects including the Arabic alphabet, life in Jordan, Spanish and Latin cultural traditions and Paganism. Students experienced Azerbaijani culture and were able to taste some amazing food, participate in Caribbean dance, make a Canadian First Nations dream catcher and play Aussie rules football. At the end of the afternoon there was a closing ceremony to celebrate the rich culture and diversity our school community shares.

We have had a busy time at Waldegrave celebrating Book Week this year. From Year 7s parading in their costumes inspired by their favourite books and our house captains hosting a book sale, to welcoming into school local YA author Sue Wallman and Hip Hop lyricist and author BREIS!

Year 7 were invited to dress up as their favourite fictional characters in exchange for a voluntary donation. The money raised will be used to further resource the school library - thank you to those who contributed, we appreciate your support. It was great to see so many creative outfits on the day. We had some magnificent individual costumes as well as group costumes. There were special appearances from the Scooby-Doo gang, Thing 1 and Thing 2 as well as the Cheshire Cat and even Katniss Everdeen.

Special guest author Sue Wallman was given the job of selecting our prize winners. In joint first was Charlie and Aiko, both dressed as the Mad Hatter. Second place went to Mila who was Katniss. Lastly, in third place, we had a group winner, which went to 6 students dressed as Crayons from The Day The Crayons Quit.

Sue Wallman's seven young adult books are available to purchase in bookshops and on Amazon. If you’re interested in learning more about Sue and her work then please feel free to check out her website which you can view here.

It was a privilege to be able to welcome best selling local YA author Sue Wallman into school to talk to our Year 7 and 8 students about her writing and inspiration for her stories. One Year 7 and 8 class were lucky enough to also attend a workshop Sue ran where they received some great creative writing tips and advice from her toolkit! Sue commented: “I loved my visit to Waldegrave. It was fantastic to see how many Year 7s and Year 8s thought of themselves as readers and/or writers. I particularly enjoyed doing a character exercise with two classes who came up with some great thoughts about how we could create a story. Thank you to Mrs Croucher who organised book sales and made the day go very smoothly.”

Our newly appointed house captains worked alongside staff to host a secondhand book sale during the lunchtime period out in Digby Court. Students were able to come and give these books a new home, selling at no more than £1 a book - we had a wide variety of genres on sale so there was something for everyone. There was a real buzz around this sale and it turned out to be a big success raising much needed funds for the school library.

We welcomed BREIS into school to talk to our Year 9 and 10 students during book week. BREIS stands for Brother Reaching Each Inner Soul and he believes his purpose is to inspire, educate and educate people through his music. He is a Hip Hop Lyricist, Rap Artist, Poet and Author who spoke to our students about the power of voice and the impact of our words on ourselves and others.

In the assembly, he talked about the fascinating history of Hip Hop, his story about becoming a Rap Artist and the positive influence it has had on his life as well as giving a brilliant live performance of some of his raps which the students loved! Two classes also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with BREIS. We have had such positive feedback from the students who really enjoyed his visit.

Safaa from 9FHE said: “It was a pleasure to take part in a rap verse writing workshop with rap artist BREIS. The session was interactive and enabled me to craft my own rap verses using devices like rhyming couplets, similes and alliteration. In our assembly in the morning BREIS spoke about the impacts of the words we exchange with others as well as those we tell ourselves.”

Our students were left inspired by BREIS’ talk and a couple have shared their own rap verses they have written:

When you look in the mirror, who do you see? The person you are or who you pretend to be Take off the mask and always be true And all people can see is the real you Why are you rude and why do you lie? What’s the worst that could happen if you didn’t hide?

Words can be empowering and lifting But they can be like spears, leaving you hurting Why be mean to others when kindness is free? Understand: respect has no fee So choose your words wisely, don’t spit them out free The world will change and you will see

“Year 13, as I think about the last two years, I am filled with immense pride. I have had the privilege of witnessing your growth, not just academically, but also as individuals. You have transformed into confident, independent thinkers, ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead. As you step into the next chapter of your lives, remember to dream big, set ambitious goals and never lose sight of your passions. Be prepared to overcome obstacles that may come your way and always remember that setbacks are not failures, but opportunities for growth and learning. Remember that the friendships and memories you have forged during your time here will endure the test of time. Stay connected with your peers, celebrate each other's successes and offer support when needed. Stay in touch and I have no doubt that you will all be successful and have very bright futures ahead of you.” ~ Ms Pugh

Members of the KS3 Science club attended the NPL Water Rocket Festival - a challenge to see how far away from the launch point their handmade air pressured rockets, using water as a propellant, can land. 35 teams from local schools came together in Bushy Park to compete to land their rockets as close as possible to the 50m target. Not only did students work collaboratively in their teams to design and build their rockets but they also gained insights into the science behind propulsion. Students used their engineering skills to use high pressure launchers to launch their rockets. The competition was stiff, and while our rockets didn't win, the students gained valuable experience learning about how rockets work and a day out in the sun!

Well done to Fran, Anna and Jasmine who were all involved in a Football tournament last weekend, playing for Teddington Panthers. The tournament took place at the Excel Club in Walton where they played 4 matches in the heats and were unbeaten, progressing into the semi-finals. They went on to win both the semi-final and final, being crowned overall winners in the top group for their age!

Congratulations to Clover V, Anna B, Olivia H-S, Helena M and Victoria M for competing in the London Youth Games Judo competition. Richmond came second out of 33 London boroughs with over 500 young people competing on the day.

Congratulations to Ariana C in 10FBA who competed in the London Gymnastics Team championships last weekend. Her team from Heathrow Gymnastics club took the gold medal, with Ariana winning gold for her floor routine and silver for her vault!

Well done to Ishka P, Artemis G, Luana S -W, Robyn Z-B, Emily S, Iona K, Chiara I, Shokria A and Taqwa A all from 8FBH. They submitted an entry to the French Institute for the French pop song competition. The music video that they created together was incredibly well done and very expertly produced. Congratulations on winning the regionals and for really throwing yourselves into the life of the school!

One of our very talented A Level art students Allira J has had her amazing painting of trees shortlisted for The Young Botanical Artist Competition 2023, in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Her work will be displayed in October in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery in Kew Gardens which holds the largest private collection of contemporary botanical art in the world.

Congratulations to Eleanor S in 7POR who, with the help of The Amber Trust charity, has achieved a Distinction in her London College of Music - Musical Theatre Grade 2 singing exam - scoring no less than 96 out of a possible 100!

This year’s Screen Your Story competition saw a huge number of entries. The prize? To have your story published in the fully illustrated collection, ‘Stories from the Young’, attend a Gala Presentation Ceremony and be in with the chance of having their story acted and filmed by a professional film crew. Huge congratulations go to Abby H in 7PWA and Anna D in 7FCO who were both shortlisted and attended the Gala Presentation Ceremony.

Well done to Lorelei in 7POR for earning a Distinction in her Lamda Musical Theatre Grade 2 exam.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is always very popular at Waldegrave, seeing students through Years 9-13 participate in Bronze, Silver and Gold level expeditions. The Bronze expedition opened up to our Year 9 students and almost the entire year group signed up, with 175 students participating!

Aside from core camping skills, students formed friendships with new people they perhaps hadn’t worked with before. Duke of Edinburgh gives students the chance to use their specific skills to aid their team, whether that be cooking, navigating or organisation, but also pushes them beyond their comfort zone. Leaders were made and new skills of teamwork, empathy and encouragement of others were tested and developed. Doubtless to say it was a challenge both mentally and physically for students and we are beyond proud of everyone for building their resilience and flourishing!

Well done to everyone for completing their expeditions, we hope students had a memorable weekend of camping in the Surrey Hills.

During this week long work experience program at St. Mary’s, students attended a multitude of activities, including the SAHPS talks on topics such as children's exercise levels, brain plasticity as well as loss aversion. They attended the psychology lab and gained experience on the mechanisms of EEGs, learning how brain signals are measured; took part in their own experiments, attempted certain university-level modules on the gut microbiome in patients with ADHD. Students compiled experiment kits for the active research that the university was conducting on how the drink Kefir has been said to improve the bacterial colony in individuals with ADHD. This experience provided our students with a valuable opportunity to gain insights into their next steps in education. It allowed them to get a preview of what lies ahead and acquire knowledge that they can effectively articulate when applying for their future endeavours!

Three economists had a great work experience at Royal Holloway University in the first week of July. Here's what they said about it:

“We all very much enjoyed the work experience at Royal Holloway! It gave us the chance to work together with many new people and learn lots more about Economics.

Being able to work on various tasks allowed us to learn about the different elements involved in economic research as we used both literary extracts and quantitative data. Further, there were several mini lectures we got to listen to which widened our knowledge into what studying economics at university would be like.

Overall, it was a great experience from which we have certainly benefited!”

~ Isis, Yasmin and Ruby

Research Methods, a topic that elicits sighs from most students when it is announced as part of the syllabus, but why is this?

Fiona Cullen and Ryan McKay from St. Mary's wholeheartedly disagree with the viewpoint that research methods are boring. In fact, they have proven the exact opposite by demonstrating to our students, through a talk and workshop, how research methods serve as tools for discovering insights into how and why humans behave as they do.

During the session, our students delved into Fiona's work on smoking practices among young people and adapted the research to be relevant to a contemporary issue - vaping. We can confidently say that no one left the session with the perception that research methods were boring!

Ian Daniels and Ramy Soliman from ACI UK helped our Sixth Form students answer these questions! They discussed the origins of the currency, its significance and its potential to transform the world. This offered valuable insights into a growing financial topic and also helped students build knowledge for their own futures.

During Drop Down Day, Year 7 took a trip to the Odeon Cinema in Kingston to see the film Chevalier. This was followed by games and a picnic back at school. Despite the train strike and an extremely busy train, they managed to make it to Kingston. Chevalier is a film based on a true story, set at the time of the French Revolution. It follows the life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the son of an enslaved mother and a French plantation owner father, who rose to prominence in French society as a composer. The film dealt with themes of race, gender and class, and Year 7 completed follow up activities during tutor time the following week. This allowed them to learn more about the writer, director and Joseph Bologne himself. They learnt a lot from his story and from the inspiration the makers had for the film.

Our Year 8 students took part in an entrepreneurship event called City Changers. The students learnt about sustainability, design skills and how cities can prevent climate change. They had to design and brand their cities before building a model of it from recycled materials!

Year 9 students were given the opportunity to spend a day away from their usual timetable and have an enjoyable day out in London.

We had 120 students attend the London Dungeons where they had an immersive experience learning about historical topics and meeting historical figures on the interactive tour.

60 students chose to spend their day adventuring around ZSL London Zoo. They came face to face with over 600 different species of animals whilst also having the chance to hear some wildlife conservation stories.

20 Year 9s favoured the London Eye and River Cruise experience. These students enjoyed a 360 degree view of the city as they located some of London’s main features from Big Ben and Houses of Parliament to Buckingham Palace and even the Shard before enjoying a peaceful boat ride down the River Thames! We also had a small group of 10 students venture out to the Natural History Museum. They enjoyed spending the day exploring the discovery and enjoyment of the natural world through exciting exhibits such as the Life and Earth Galleries, wildlife garden and geological collections.

A group of Year 8 French enthusiasts led Year 3 students from local primary school St James’ in an afternoon of fun and games. The students spent a few weeks in the run up to the event learning how to give instructions and lead these games in French. The young students responded with enthusiasm and excitement. The afternoon finished with a French style picnic, including croissants and pain au chocolat. Parents and teachers from the primary school were present and the students were complimented on their performance. Thank you to Mrs Dion-Jones for organising the event and teaching our students.

Our Year 8 computing enrichment students recently participated in the ‘Your Voice is Power’ competition. Your Voice is Power is a national remix competition that introduces the fundamentals of computer science through an exploration of music and social change. Students used code written in Georgia Tech’s EarSketch platform to create an original song remix that promotes equity. Well done to Coco, Polly, Amelia, Grace, Sila, Alexa, Victoria and Eva for having their entries judged within the top 45 submissions!

The annual competition for Richmond Borough secondary schools took place at Twickenham School on Wednesday 5 July. The competition was tough but our students really enjoyed the event. They were enthusiastic and collaborative, worked brilliantly as a team; and were awarded a very close third place. Congratulations and thank you to: Ava S, Nimisha C, Alexa M, Meg S, Nashwa Z, Emma W, Amelie W, Coco B.

Nine STEM students in Years 11 and 12 had the chance to take part in the NPL Academy, a work experience programme run jointly at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington and at the school. To kick start their week of work experience, students were welcomed to NPL with an introduction to the company and the type of work they do, followed by a tour of their laboratories. Students learnt about Intellectual Property, how to create prototypes, what a good business plan looks like and how to pitch a business idea. They were given the task of pitching the idea for a new business to a set of judges, then make a presentation about their week's work to show their peers on Friday. Students also participated in a number of STEM activities and challenges with the rest of the cohort.

Our Chamber Choir took part in the Richmond Festival, performing in the intermediate choral section. Despite the heat, they showed up in full force, ready for a wonderful evening ahead.

Waldegrave Choir were up against two other talented choirs, Resound Girls’ Choir and St Paul’s Choir. The competition was tough and although they may not have been chosen as the winners, our choir went home with the proud achievement of receiving a Distinction for their performances!

Digby Court played host to over 300 parents as the Performing Arts team presented Waldegrave Rocks. The evening saw all the school music ensembles, drama clubs and dance classes performing rock and music inspired pieces in our outdoor event. 230 students took part across all year groups including students from Years 11 and 13, returning after study leave. AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Queen, Cold Play, Portishead and Tina Turner were amongst the bands and artists featured in our very own mini Glastonbury.

Waldegrave Chamber Choir were invited to perform at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington as part of Richmond Arts and Ideas Festival for an evening of Opera and Ballet music. The Chamber Choir performed choruses from Carmen, Nabucco, and Hansel and Gretel with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. The concert also featured three amazing soloists from the world of opera including Claire Filer, Andrew Henley and our very own singing teacher Serena Kay. It was an evening of grace, passion, romance and some of the most glorious melodies ever written. Congratulations to the Chamber Choir who excelled themselves!

Year 13 budding graphic designer and Goal Shooter, Louisa G designed the netball kit, taking inspiration from the Waldegrave Swan logo and using gold to cleverly complement the Sara Morton Real Estates branding - incorporating Sara’s logo and branding on the Netball kits was especially challenging. We are really proud of Louisa and know she has a bright future ahead of her! We can't wait for the 2023 / 2024 sports season when we will proudly wear our fabulous new kit and also welcome new players into the teams from our new Year 12 cohort.

Our Year 12 Economics students were taken on a trip to explore the rich history of the City of London. In the morning, they visited the Bank of England where they visited the museum and had the opportunity to pick up a real gold bar before having a talk and watching some films about the work of the bank in the cinema there. In the afternoon they had a guided tour of the City of London which helped the students gain a better understanding of the City's importance and how it has served as a financial hub for centuries.

As part of their English studies into the Gothic genre, Year 9 students had the chance to visit Strawberry Hill House for a tour and workshop exploring the Gothic history behind this local building. Students have been studying Gothic literature as part of the KS3 syllabus in order to prepare them for the pre-19th Century element of the English GCSE course. As well as learning all about the history of the haunted place and the beginning of the Gothic era of literature, students also got the chance to dress up and have a go at writing their own Gothic literature.

We have included a couple of our favourites on the next page for you to enjoy!

Our Year 12 Fashion students were lucky enough to have front row tickets for the runway shows at GFW in London. This is a showcase of some of the emerging graduate talent from some of the UK’s finest Fashion degree courses.

Not only is it inspirational for Year 12 who have just begun their own Personal Investigation - a design and make project worth 60% of their A Level - but it gives them insight into the future pathways available post A Level.

This year, 8 out of 11 Fashion and Textiles students are progressing onto an Art foundation or a Fashion related degree course!

New Designers is an annual show at the Business design Centre in London, showcasing the very best work of some of the most recent graduates in the field of design.

Universities are represented from across the UK from a wide range of design disciplines spanning fashion, textiles, product and furniture design.

Our Year 10 DT students used the experience to fuel their creativity as they embarked on their coursework design and made a project which is worth 50% of their GCSE.

This was a great opportunity to see how graduates are finding innovative solutions and harnessing new technologies and embracing traditional craft based skills.

Twelve students from Years 8, 9 and 10 spent the day at Excel London as they represented Waldegrave in the Money Wise Challenge. This challenge brings together young people from schools across London to compete in the award-winning Money Wise Game as they learn life changing money and career skills. Chloe R, Ellie H and Helena M made up our Year 10 team which they went on to win the Year 10 and 11 category! A huge congratulations to these students and well done to the other participants who have all truly done Waldegrave proud.

Year 12 German students visited the German Careers Roadshow at the Goethe Institute in South Kensington. They spent the day engaging in a variety of workshops and starting discussions with numerous exhibitors including Lidl and Bayerische Landesbank to find out more about which industries need applicants with German language skills as well as understanding the different opportunities there are in the world of work if you have a qualification in German. They attended an excellent presentation by the Foreign Attaché to the German Embassy and received lots of information about Summer internships that are available to apply for within the STEM industry.

As part of preparation for life after school and entering the workforce, a group of Year 9 students were invited to attend the Livery Schools Link Annual Livery Showcase. This event offered a unique opportunity for students to engage with professionals from various fields, trades and crafts.

“The Careers festival was a very fun day out!” - Georgia S

“I loved how interactive this event was; getting to make bracelets out of willow leaves and watching people 3D print stuff was so fun!” - Lola C

“I really enjoyed the engaging puzzles and

quizzes we could do at the stalls as we could win prizes related to that specific job.” - Sophia J-C

How can you optimise your network? What steps can you take to improve your career prospects in the future? How can you recognise and promote diversity? These are some thought-provoking questions. Fortunately, with the assistance of the Worshipful Company of World Traders, our students gained valuable insights and practical skills to address these issues. The workshop provided an opportunity for our students to enhance and apply their soft skills, concluding the day with an insightful panel discussion on how to prepare for their futures.

A handful of English A Level students had the pleasure of attending the ‘Lit in Colour’ conference at Friend’s House, Euston. Year 12 students Emily and Miranda commented on the event: “Throughout the day, several speakers shared their own personal experiences and viewpoints on the role that race has played and continued to play in literature, spanning from Shakespeare to modern-day prose. These speakers included Jeffery Boakye, Iona Mandal and Jayda Davis, all with different backgrounds such as musical theatre and poetry. The initiative of the event helps young readers and writers to understand and appreciate how the importance of representation in literature is so crucial today. The enthusiasm and effective audience contribution enabled for an extremely engaging event, aiding upcoming coursework assignments for Year 13 English.”
