From Me To You...
There was a time, not so long ago, when television ran our lives with an iron fist and we were absolutely fine with that. Your favorite show aired once a week, on a specific channel, at a specific time, and if you missed it, you missed it. No replays. No catch-up apps. Just the cold, silent judgment of your friends on Monday morning. Enter the VCR, that beautiful, blinking, perpetually- midnight-flashing miracle machine. Taping a show was an act of love and commitment. You had to set the timer, label the cassette, and pray that nobody accidentally recorded over your season finale with a three-hour golf tournament. (Looking at you, Dad.) Taping etiquette was serious business. You did not borrow someone’s tape without asking. You rewound when you were finished. You never recorded over someone else’s tape, and yes, that was absolutely grounds for a family meeting. And the anticipation! Waiting an entire week between episodes built genuine suspense. Cliffhangers were devastating. Water-cooler conversation was everything. We theorized, we argued, we called each other on the phone like civilized people.
Now? We drop an entire season on a Friday and resurface on Sunday looking like we’ve survived something. “Did you watch it yet?” has replaced every other form of human greeting. Spoilers travel at the speed of light. And somehow, despite having access to everything, we still spend forty-five minutes deciding what to watch. Perhaps the greatest plot twist of all is this: we fought for the remote, we programmed the VCR, we scheduled our entire week around thirty minutes of television, and we were, somehow, deeply, ridiculously happy. Not only have we lost that anticipation, we have become a nation where immediate gratification is demanded in all things. As for me and my typewriter, I’ll see you next month - same time, same channel. Catherine Uretsky Editor, Up The Hill Magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623.398.5541

The Cutest Kids in Estrella Competition Winner! Congratulations to the Karp family, their beautiful children Elijah and Violet are the first winners of our cutest kids competition. As we thought about where to relocate, our priority was to live in a family oriented community, with lots of activities for them to do, and the potential to make many friends. Estrella checked all of the boxes. We love our neighborhood, the amenities, the schools and feel safe and secure in our surroundings. Elijah enjoys Jiu Jitsu, play dates with his friends, Monster Trucks, and taking care of his new Bearded Dragon, Spike. Violet likes animals, going to the park, Toddler Time at the local library, and visiting indoor play places.”
couldn’t wait to become Estrella residents! We fell in love with Estrella while visiting our friends who had moved here a year prior. What really impressed us was how friendly everyone was! We attended an event at Starpointe, and the other children were so warm, and instantly welcoming towards our kids.
Congratulations Elijah and Violet, enjoy the Zoo!
Stay tuned for our next winner in the April edition.

Kindness Corner
Seasons Of Growth March is a month of transition. As winter gives way to spring, many people feel a renewed sense of possibility and yet there is a tinge of uncertainty. This makes March an ideal time to reflect on kindness as a stabilizing force during change. For ourselves, kindness helps us navigate transitions with greater ease. When routines shift or expectations change, stress can rise quickly. Choosing kindness, especially in moments of frustration, creates space for understanding. It allows us to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. This is particularly important in familiar relationships, where impatience can quietly replace compassion. Kindness in everyday interactions often looks like flexibility. It may mean giving someone extra time, offering reassurance during uncertainty, or extending grace when plans do not go as expected. These choices
foster cooperation and mutual respect. Over time, they strengthen relationships by reinforcing trust. There is also power in kindness toward strangers. In transitional seasons, many people are carrying unseen worries. A smile, a kind word, or a brief moment of courtesy can interrupt someone’s difficult day in a meaningful way. While we may never see the full impact of these actions, they contribute to a culture of care. Research consistently shows that kindness improves mental and physical health. Acts of kindness increase feelings of connection and purpose while reducing stress. On a practical level, kindness improves communication and problem-solving, making both personal and professional environments healthier. As March invites growth and renewal, kindness offers a steady foundation. It reminds us that progress does not need to be hurried and that compassion can guide us through change. By choosing kindness during moments of transition, we help create a sense of stability not only for ourselves, but for everyone around us. Submitted by Timothy Hunter Mathews, Estrella Resident

Money Matters
The Dramatic Way Stock Investors Receive “Average” Returns of 10% Life moves fast. So do stocks. Last year the stock market experienced one of its fastest snapback rallies ever. The stock market can be dramatic. Extremes are normal for equities. You can blame Trump, or current geopolitics, or present economic data, but presidents and companies and Fed meetings come and go. Volatility, on the other hand, will last what feels like forever. The default setting for long-term investors should be to expect drama in the stock market. Meb Faber of Cambria Investment Management writes, “Most investors understand that stocks return about 10% per year over time. However, many investors may not appreciate the volatile path that stocks often take to achieve this 10% return. It’s not a steady 10%, 10%, 10%. Over the past 125 years, the average up year in markets was 21%! The average down year is -14%. There are about three times as many up years as down years. In fact, there are more than 25% or more up years than down years. But the down years still happen, and when they do, they’re scary…”
What’s the lesson here? Though the stock market can be dramatic, investors should not be. In order to experience average investment returns over decades, one must put up with how rare average returns are on an annual basis. Getting “average” returns means treating extremes as an ordinary part of investing. Submitted by Brandon Stockman, Wealth Advisor at Johnson Wealth Management

The Bug Guy
The Luck of the Irish: Estrella Mountain Pest Control Edition When most people think of St. Patrick’s Day in the West Valley, they picture green beer, shamrock decorations, and maybe a parade down Mill Avenue. But let me tell you what’s really lurking in the Valley on March 17th: scorpions wearing tiny leprechaun hats. Okay, not really—but wouldn’t that make them easier to spot? While Ireland worries about snakes (thanks, St. Patrick), we valley residents have our own crawling concerns. Legend has it that St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. Here’s the thing: he clearly never visited Arizona. We’ve got rattlesnakes, bark scorpions, cockroaches the size of Volkswagens, and something called a “sun spider” that looks like it escaped from a nightmare factory. You know what we really need? St. Patrick of Goodyear. Someone who can drive out the roof rats, banish the bark scorpions to the desert where they belong, and maybe—just maybe—convince the pigeons that Estrella blvd Street isn’t prime real estate.
The irony isn’t lost on me that on a day celebrating all things green, pest control companies are busier than ever. While you’re dyeing your pool water green for Instagram, there’s probably a family of crickets having a full-blown house party in your garage. They’re not even Irish crickets. They’re freeloaders. Here’s my St. Patrick’s Day wish for the west Valley: may your beer be cold, your sunscreen be SPF 50, and may the only thing you find under your rocks be rocks. No scorpions, no black widows, just boring old minerals. And if you do spot a pest this St. Patrick’s Day, remember: you’re not lucky, you’re just living in Arizona. Call an exterminator, grab a pint, and accept that in the Valley of the Sun, the only snakes St. Patrick’s driving out are the ones slithering through your backyard. Sláinte, desert dwellers. May the odds be ever in your favor. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control.

St Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick’s Day: a day filled with parades, community celebrations, and a touch of playful magic. While the holiday has become synonymous with certain traditions, at its heart it’s about celebrating joy, connection, and bringing a little Irish spirit into our lives as March begins. The simplest way to join the fun? Go green. Wearing green has become a cheerful tradition that adds festive flair to the day. Beyond your wardrobe, bring touches of green into your home or workspace with a few well-placed decorations. These simple additions can brighten moods and spark conversations about the holiday’s significance. Food offers another delightful way to celebrate. Consider hosting an Irish-themed meal with friends and family. Traditional dishes like soda bread, shepherd’s pie, and colcannon bring authentic flavor to the table, while green candies satisfy younger guests
with a sweet tooth. For breakfast, adventurous families might try green eggs and ham in honor of Dr. Seuss, whose birthday falls during this festive season. For those seeking more active celebration, a backyard scavenger hunt provides entertainment for all ages. Hide gold coins (chocolate ones work wonderfully) around your yard or home, transforming children into leprechaun hunters for the afternoon. As a bonus, this makes excellent practice for Easter egg hunts just around the corner. Perhaps the most meaningful way to observe Saint Patrick’s Day is through acts of kindness. Challenge family members to perform small good deeds throughout the day: leave encouraging notes for neighbors, donate to a local charity, help someone in need, or reconnect with a friend you haven’t contacted recently. These gestures spread joy far beyond decorations and festivities. However you choose to celebrate this year, remember that Saint Patrick’s Day is ultimately about finding joy in togetherness, sharing laughter, and embracing a little whimsy along the way.

Spring Blooms
Spring brings more than warmer temperatures and longer days. The season’s arrival triggers a subtle shift in our emotional well-being, largely influenced by the colors blooming around us. After months of heavy neutral tones and darker clothing, spring’s vibrant palette creates a psychological effect that helps us feel lighter and more optimistic. Green dominates the spring landscape, associated with growth, balance, and renewal, green has a powerful effect on our well-being. Studies show that exposure to green environments decreases stress levels, improves focus, and increases emotional stability. This phenomenon helps explain why Arizona’s parks and outdoor spaces feel particularly inviting as spring arrives. Accompanying nature’s greens are the softer hues of pink, blue, and yellow that reflect significantly more light than winter’s darker shades. These colors deliver measurable boosts to our mood and energy
levels. Pink, for instance, evokes feelings of calmness and compassion, offering a gentle contrast to winter’s intensity. This shift explains why spring fashion collections feel inherently more uplifting than their winter counterparts. Yellow carries associations with optimism and mental stimulation, though its effects work best in moderate doses. Even white becomes more prominent during spring, symbolizing simplicity and fresh possibilities as we emerge from winter’s heavier aesthetic. What makes spring’s color psychology particularly effective is its subtlety. Unlike summer’s bold, saturated palette, spring offers a gentler transition. The season presents an invitation rather than a demand, encouraging experimentation and renewal at a comfortable pace. Arizona’s spring landscape demonstrates this principle beautifully. Desert wildflowers bloom in waves of purple, yellow, and orange, while green growth appears along waterways and in cultivated spaces. These colors remind us that meaningful growth doesn’t require dramatic transformation. Instead, spring teaches us that gradual change can be just as powerful, offering renewal one gentle shade at a time.

Home Sweet Home
Clear the Clutter: Why It Is the Perfect Time to Organize Your Garage It is currently that all too short, amazing Arizona weather – not too cool and not yet hot – and it is the perfect time to tackle one of the most overlooked areas of the home: the garage. Cool and sunny days make garage clean-up far more manageable and definitely satisfying - before summer temperatures return. For many Arizona homeowners, the garage doubles as storage for everything from holiday décor and sports equipment to tools, camping gear, and pool supplies. Over time it’s easy for clutter to pile up, making it hard to park cars, find what you need, or even move safely through the space. A seasonal reset can make a huge difference in both function and peace of mind. Start by pulling everything out or grouping items into categories. This is the best way to see what you have - and what you no longer need. Donate, recycle, or discard items that are broken, unused, or simply taking up valuable space. Arizona garages are notorious for collecting “just in case” items, and decluttering is the first step toward real organization. Focus on smart storage solutions. Wall-mounted racks, ceiling
storage, and sturdy shelving help keep items off the floor and protected from dust. Clear, labeled bins are ideal for seasonal décor and infrequently used items, while frequently used tools should be easy to access. In Arizona, it’s also important to store items safely away from extreme heat - especially paints, chemicals, and electronics. Don’t forget to sweep, hose down, or even power wash the floor once the garage is empty. A clean floor instantly makes the space feel more usable and complete. Adding rubber mats or epoxy flooring can also help protect against dirt, oil stains, and everyday wear. Beyond convenience, a clean and organized garage adds real value. Whether you’re planning to stay put or thinking about selling in the future, a tidy garage creates a strong impression and shows pride of ownership. With Arizona’s ideal weather right now, there’s no better time to open the garage door, let the sunshine in, and reclaim a space that works just as hard as the rest of your home. Women Who Have Shaped Our Lives

This invention became the foundation for modern wireless technology, leading
Many technologies we use daily in computing, healthcare, entertainment, and communications were shaped by remarkable women whose names rarely make headlines. Their innovations have become so embedded in everyday life that it’s easy to forget they were revolutionary when introduced. The truth is, our modern world would look completely different without these pioneering women.

What connects these women isn’t only their brilliance but their remarkable persistence. They worked in fields that often withheld recognition from women, faced resistance at every turn, and operated under immense pressure where failure could end their careers. Yet their ideas withstood the test of time, reshaping entire industries so completely that their contributions became invisible through familiarity.
Grace Hopper, a brilliant computer scientist, helped make programming accessible beyond elite mathematicians. This March, during Women’s History Month, Estrella Publishing celebrates these innovators alongside countless other women who have made extraordinary contributions throughout history. Their leaps forward in science, medicine, and technology created the foundation for the comfortable, connected lives we enjoy today. The Doctor Is In
The Uncomfortable Truth: Why Your Defensiveness Is a Dead Giveaway In my two decades as a psychologist, I’ve found that there is one sentence guaranteed to make a person’s skin crawl: Defensiveness is an implication of guilt. If your immediate internal reaction to that sentence was to build an excuse—to think, “Wait, what if I’m just being misunderstood?”—then congratulations. You just proved the point. The question you have to ask yourself is simple but powerful: Why are you protecting a version of yourself that hasn’t even been attacked yet? In the world of humanistic psychology, we understand that the truth doesn’t need a shield. The truth is unshakeable; it simply exists. But guilt? Guilt is fragile. It’s like a high-maintenance house guest that requires a 24-hour security detail of buts, ifs and you-did-it-toos. When you react with immediate, heated defensiveness, you aren’t actually fighting for the truth. You’re fighting to maintain an image. You’re implying that the accusation has enough weight to actually threaten your identity. Defensiveness reveals that you’re holding a mistake you aren’t ready to own. If the accusation wasn’t true, you wouldn’t be sweating the defense. We often spend more energy defending a mistake than we would spend simply correcting it. This defensiveness keeps us stuck in emotional pain and robs us of our agency, making us a prisoner to our own protection mechanisms.
Next time you feel that familiar heat rising in your chest—the urge to interrupt, explain or deflect—don’t. Take a breath and use a placeholder: “I hear you. Let me think on that.” Then, step away and perform an Identity Audit. This transition is vital because it allows you to move from a place of emotional reaction to one of logical response. By dropping the shield, you stop being a victim of your own ego and start being a person with agency. We don’t wait for the world to stop accusing us; we simply stop being so easy to threaten.

B-Ball March Gone Mad
of a team carrying an enormous chip on its shoulder. Their presence in the tournament expands Arizona’s basketball footprint and introduces a new generation to March Madness excitement. What makes March Madness truly special isn’t just winning. It’s the shared experiences that unite us: office pools where colleagues become rivals, watch parties that turn living rooms into arenas, and buzzer- beaters that have entire neighborhoods erupting simultaneously. These moments create connections across age groups and backgrounds. Families gather on patios to watch games, sports bars open their outdoor seating, and the tournament becomes backdrop to springtime celebrations throughout the state. March Madness reminds us that sports can bring communities together, creating common ground where everyone shares the thrill of competition and the hope that this year might bring something magical.
March Madness is more than just a tournament: it’s an entire cultural experience. The moment brackets are released, time bends, workdays blur, and group chats explode with opinions about matchups, upsets, and potential Cinderella teams. At the center stands the University of Arizona Wildcats, perennial powerhouses who consistently command national attention. Whether entering as top seeds or dark horses, the Wildcats bring Arizona pride to the national stage. The energy at McKale Center reaches far beyond Tucson, and a deep tournament run creates memories that last for generations. For Arizona families, watching the Wildcats compete becomes a shared experience that brings communities together. Arizona State University brings a different energy to March. While the Sun Devils may not always enter as favorites, they thrive on unpredictability. ASU has a history of heating up during crucial stretches, playing with an edge that makes them compelling to watch. When they do earn a tournament berth, they often arrive with something to prove, making them dangerous opponents for any team. GCU represents Arizona’s newest basketball powerhouse. The Lopes bring fresh energy to Phoenix, building a passionate fan base and drawing national attention to the Valley. Often overlooked in preseason discussions, GCU plays fearlessly, with the intensity
