Dear Reader,

1.1 teratons is an impressive number. It is the weight of all life on earth. At the end of 2020, Israeli scientists provided the following comparison in the magazine Nature*: The human-made mass now weighs as much as the natural biomass. Artificial things include houses, streets, machines, clothing, plastic and more. Building materials are a significant component of the increasing anthropogenic mass. The pace of growth to date has been gigantic - with no end in sight. The website anthropomass.org is worth visiting. Scientists created it to explain their numbers clearly. You will find PET bottles as part of the animation. We humans use resources to develop products. For the most part, these resources do not return into the cycle - as they do in nature. And they are certainly not kept in circulation without human intervention. Also important to consider: How much energy and water is required to manufacture these products? And how much CO 2 is emitted? Currently too much for the cycle. It is not just about plastic packaging. However, the scientists’ illustrations provide an unsettling perspective and underline that also our industry must establish the circular economy without compromise. There is no other way. Is it a utopia to strive for a 100% circular economy - a world without waste? Even though hard to achieve, we need to make it our goal. 1.1 teratons clearly show us, as a society and as an industry, where we have to be successfull: avoid, reduce, recycle. Every product from every industry needs a sustainable solution at the end of its life cycle. Nature shows how it is: in the circle of life nothing is lost. In our industry, PET is a prime example of a recyclable anthropogenic material. PET packaging has a remarkable history: lightweight saves material, heatset technologies allow refillable packaging, and mechanical and chemical recycling technologies create the basis for the cycle. It is time to think bigger.

rPET Krones joins the EU’s circular economy initiative

ƒ The Krones Group has joined the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform. ƒ The initiative set up by the European Commission progresses the establishment of a pan-European circular economy. ƒ As a member of the platform, Krones has entered into a self-imposed commitment to eight targets. It was set up by the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee with the declared goal of closing material cycles and thus putting in place a firm foundation for a more sustainable future. As a high-tech company that has signed up to developing eco-friendly technology for recyclable packaging, Krones not only sees this project’s goals as strikingly similar to its own aspirations but can even make a substantial contribution towards turning the vision of a closed-loop recycling economy into hands-on reality. That is why Krones joined the platformand entered into a self-imposed commitment to the following eight targets: 1. rPET compatibility By 2025, it will be possible on all new PET bottling lines to handle bottles made of up to 100 per cent high-grade recyclate without any impairment to production quality, efficiency or efficacy. 2.Plastic-free secondary packaging By 2022, Krones will offer alternative secondary-packaging solutions

containing no single-use plastics whatsoever for all multipack formats in common use. 3.Support for recyclable packaging design Krones uses its technological expertise to support clients in designing forms of packaging that are optimally suited for recycling. 4.Changing over from linear production to circular economy Clients get the support they need in order to achieve optimum results on existing lines, too, when handling recycled and/or renewable materials. 5.Permanently attached closures Equipment is already available that enables tethered caps (= closures permanently attached to the bottle) to be used. 6.Sustainable labelling For optimum recycling results, Krones’ portfolio includes packaging solutions where labels can be removed from the empty container without any problems. The long-term goal is to

recycle the labels together with the containers – or do entirely without a separate material for container decoration. 7. Investing in recycling Upgrading Krones’ solutions for material recycling of packaging plastics (solid/flexible, PET, polyolefins and PS) is further progressed by continually investing in the relevant research and development projects. 8.Beyond PET packaging Above and beyond conventional PET solutions, Krones is proactively pursuing development projects connectedwithdisruptive technologies that take beverages to the consumer in innovative ways (packaging-free solutions, paper bottle). Deposit Return Scheme TOMRA: High-performing bottle and can recycling programs have four success factors in common, new white paper finds

to move away from traditional linear take-make-dispose models in favor of a circular economy. Policymakers are turning to DRS as a successful approach for tackling these challenges. Also known as container deposit schemes or bottle bills, this legislation adds a small deposit to the price of a beverage, which is repaid to consumers when they return the empty bottles and cans for recycling. In the past three years alone at least 22 states or countries have committed to update or develop deposit return systems, soon bringing the global total to more than 60. This includes England, Portugal and all of Australia. In addition, the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive establishes targets for member states to collect 90%of all plastic bottles by 2029, a rate experts say is difficult to reach without a deposit on beverage containers. In Europe, existing deposit systems see up to 98% of plastic drink containers collected for recycling (with

wood and PVC foam. Weight reduction is also a key issue in wind blade design. Extending blade length to increase the amount of captured energy adds significant weight to the blade. SABIC’s LNP COLORCOMP WQ117945 compound can significantly reduce foam cell size (as much as three-fold) compared to standard nucleating agents such as talc, while decreasing cell size disparity by a factor of up to five. These factors help to reduce resin uptake by the foam during composite manufacture, resulting in a lighter-weight blade. In terms of strength and other mechanical properties, high-density PET foams can potentially compete with balsa wood, while avoiding wood’s natural variations. Further, as thermoformable polymers, PET foams offer greater freedom in the design and shaping of wind blades as compared to balsa. They also offer stable supply, cost-effectiveness, consistent material properties and much less resin uptake. Beyond PET Besides being used as an effective nucleating agent for foaming processes such as extrusion foaming, injection foaming and bead foaming, SABIC’s new nanotechnology solution can also act as a rheological modifier for improving melt strength and thermoformability. The nanotechnology SABIC is using can be adapted for other resins besides PET, making it a good candidate for use in a wide range of different industries.

AA scavenger Holland Colours: Colorants for PET with built-in TasteGuard

Therefore, Holland Colours’ TasteGuard will be available freely across all regions. TasteGuard is currently available in a solid 50% loaded format while a liquid format prototype is nearing launch. Next, a new solid 75% loaded version will soon be introduced, which creates less contamination in the recycling stream, causing less yellowing in rPET. The company’s AA blockers are not considered as active substances according to EU 450/2009. In fact, TasteGuard prevents AA from entering packaged water.

Taste consistency can be an issue with PET packaging, which is why Holland Colours offers PET colorants that include TasteGuard. During PET preform production, the molecule acetaldehyde (AA) is formed as a byproduct of PET. Although AA is a naturally occurring substance, it has a sweet taste and can cause an “off” flavor in applications such as bottled water. To prevent this from happening, an AA scavenger like Holland Colours’ TasteGuard can be used to prevent migration of AA into the bottle content. For 20 years, there were strict patents in place around the globe concerning this type of packaging additive and who could supply and produce it. In February 2021, these restrictions will

Bottle design Sidel presents NUUK, the new rPET water bottle concept inspired by Greenland

Sidel’s art designers have created the NUUK bottle concept, drawing inspiration from the purity of ice and its formations. The NUUK brand takes its name from Greenland’s capital and the fjords that make it famous. The “Frozen, Authentic, Unique” slogan highlights the brand’s attributes, which are closely linked to water and its features. Produced from clear, 100% recycled PET (rPET), NUUK is a container designed for high-quality, fjord-sourced premium water brands. With its pure, sophisticated and distinctive design, the 500 ml bottle showcases the water it contains and reflects the brand’s essence. Thanks to its asymmetric shape, NUUK stands out on the shelves, putting traditional water bottle designs in the shade. An authentic frozen bottle arising from the ice “The specific ice shape on the lower part of the bottle constitutes a great asset and reinforces its structure. It gives the impression that the bottle is surging up from the ice,” explains Laurent Lepoitevin, Packaging Design Engineer at Sidel. In line with its origins, the deep bottle base resembles a rock glacier and is produced by Sidel’s patented Base Over Stroke System (BOSS). The mechanical forming which takes place during the blowing process optimises the material distribution in the final bottle base profile. The consistent blowing process uses a minimum amount of material. The wide cap, with its ice shape and blue colour, enhances the brand’s premium look and perception. The bottle is also

compatible with tethered cap solutions to meet environmental requirements and forthcoming regulations. From the base to the bottle cap, the harmonious shape is taken to the next level with a transparent and cleanly designed label. The purity of the water can be clearly seen through the elegant and minimal typography, thus emphasising the bottle’s appearance. “In addition to the water quality and integrity symbolized by the fjords, the use of 100% rPET goes hand in hand with Sidel’s sustainable commitment to achieve closed loop food grade and recyclable plastic packaging,” adds Laurent. Geometric Viking art influences label design Pressure-Sensitive Label (PSL) decoration is inspired by authentic Viking art, more specifically the Borre style. In the 10th century, the Nuuk area was inhabited by Vikings who left their cultural imprint, including their The transparent

art. Laurent explains: “The Borre style embraces a range of geometric interlacing, knot patterns and zoomorphic (single animal) motifs.” Five versions of the label show different graphic designs based on this geometric interlacing. The brand logo is a snowflake combined with an ancient Norse symbol, Vegvisir, a symbol of protection and guidance believed to be used as a compass by Vikings. Future goals Avantium publishes its sustainability plan ‘Chain Reaction 2030’ - a pioneering roadmap for a fossil-free chemical industry

Recycling Australia’s largest PET recycling plant now under construction in Albury-Wodonga

Construction is now underway on a world- class recycling facility in Albury-Wodonga that will see the equivalent of around 1 billion PET plastic bottles recycled each year. Environment Minister and Federal Member for Farrer, the Hon. Sussan Ley MP, marked the official start of construction by turning the first sod on-site at the project, which is being delivered in a joint venture between Asahi Beverages, Pact Group Holdings Ltd and Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd. The $45 million plant – in the Nexus Precinct 10km outside the Albury CBD in NSW – is set to be fully operational by October, two months earlier than expected owing to Albury Council approving the project ahead of schedule. The facility will trade as Circular Plastics Australia PET. Excavation of the site has already started, sheds to house more than a dozen diggers have been erected and dozens of jobs will be created as construction ramps up in coming weeks. The raw plastic material that the new plant will recycle each year is equivalent to 1 billion 600 ml PET plastic bottles and will be used to produce more than 20,000 tonnes of new recycled PET bottles and food packaging, making it the largest end-to-end rPet plant in Australia. It will increase the amount of locally sourced and recycled PET produced in Australia by two thirds – from around 30,000 tonnes currently

to over 50,000 tonnes per annum according to Pact Group.

The project was made possible with the assistance of almost $5 million from the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy, with the support of the Department of Regional NSW and the Australian Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund. Federal Environment Minister and Federal Member for Farrer, Sussan Ley, said: “The project is integral toensuring the successful delivery of Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets. It will create local jobs during construction and permanent jobs when it begins operations.” Asahi Beverage’s Group CEO, Mr Robert Iervasi, said: “Asahi Beverages is excited to be partnering with Pact and Cleanaway to make this investment and create more jobs for the Albury-Wodonga region. This will be a world-class facility that helps transform Australia’s recycling capacity and the Albury-Wodonga region should be proud of its contribution to manufacturing and recycling in Australia. Along with our beverage manufacturing plant in Albury, the new plant is part of our long-term commitment to the region.”

This milestone facility is the largest SLL RCF in history /1/, and the first syndicated facility of its kind among publicly listed companies in the alcohol beverage sector /1/. ILLIG Maschinenbau is a leading global supplier of thermoforming, packaging and tooling systems for plastics and cardboard. The ILLIG Technology Center (ITC) team works with customers to develop, test and evaluate products to market launch and through to production on ILLIG systems. The ITC packaging laboratory is the link between application, tool and machine development. ILLIG bundles Pactivity® around packaging development in the ITC at the company headquarters in Heilbronn where product development partners work closely with ILLIG engineers and designers. Product ideas quickly take shape with 3D printing. In the laboratory, material properties of cardboard, paper and plastic are analyzed using optical scanners, microscopes, polariscopes, microtomes and tensile testing machines. Additional equipment includes a heat cabinet for determining shrinkage, and devices for checking the adhesive properties of material

combinations, tightness and topload of the molded parts. Circular economy solutions for all Optimized packaging can reduce the use of non-renewable raw materials and make recycling possible in the first place. Thermoformed packaging is thin-walled, resource-saving, and can be produced economically and is very well suited to the circular economy. In addition to recyclable material, the use of alternative and new materials in thermoforming is easily accomplished. Current ILLIG systems process bio-based and biodegradable plastics as well as new material combinations into high- quality formed parts. “Thanks to the decoration technology in thermoforming IML-T®, numerous new packaging variants can be seen in the food packaging arena. This also includes the solid carton blisters produced on ILLIG packaging systems,” explains Sven Engelmann, Head of ITC and Packaging Development.

The Coca-Cola Company announced in the United States the introduction of a new 13.2oz bottle made from 100% recycled plastic material (rPET)*. This new bottle will be available first in the company’s biggest and most iconic brand: Coca-Cola®. In addition, the company announced today in the U.S. the transition to bottles made from 100% recycled plastic material* across a selection of brands in the portfolio, including DASANI® and smartwater®, which will be available in various package sizes this year. The moves are a substantial step in addressing plastic waste, among the top environmental concerns globally, reducing the company’s use of new plastic by more than 20% across the portfolio in North America compared to 2018. Starting this month in select states in the Northeast, Florida and California, Coca-Cola Trademark (Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Coca-Cola Flavors) will roll out the all-new, 13.2oz bottle made from 100% rPET*. The new bottle is conveniently sized in a more sippable package and reduces the use of new plastic. This summer, the 13.2oz, 100% rPET* bottle will roll out across additional sparkling beverage brands nationwide. As part of a portfolio approach, 20oz bottles made from 100% rPET* are being introduced across Coca-Cola, Coke Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Flavors beginning this month in California and New York and will continue to roll out this Spring in Texas. DASANI and smartwater will follow suit, introducing 20oz bottles made from 100% rPET* in March and July, respectively. Finally, in February, people in select markets will

see a new 13.2oz clear bottle from Sprite, also made from 100% rPET*. The clear package makes it easier for bottles to be recycled and remade into new bottles. All Sprite packaging will transition to clear packaging by the end of 2022. “Given our scale and resources, we realize our unique opportunity and clear responsibility to make a positive difference in the global plastic crisis, bringing us closer to our ambitious World Without Waste goals,” said Alpa Sutaria, Vice President and General Manager, Sustainability, North America Operating Unit, The Coca-Cola Company. “Plastic is a valuable packaging resource and these innovations in the U.S. represent meaningful action that focus not just on what goes into the bottles, but on innovation of the bottles themselves.” In 2018, the company pledged robust World Without Waste goals to collect and recycle the equivalent of a bottle or can for every one the company sells by 2030, to make 100% of packaging recyclable by

2025 and to use 50% recycled material in bottles and cans by 2030. By introducing 100% rPET bottles* in the United States, this marks a total of 19 markets globally offering recycled packaging. Using internal company tools and analyses, it is estimated that in the United States, these innovations represent a 10,000 metric tons reduction in GHG emissions annually – the equivalent of taking 2,120 cars off the road for one year. Amidst this rollout, The Coca-Cola Company aims to inspire everyone to join in reducing waste, with the largest on-package messaging effort by the company to-date. Each 100% rPET package* will feature on cap messaging, as well as a “Recycle Me Again” message on the label to encourage people to take action and recycle their bottles so that they can be remade into new ones, supporting closed-loop recycling systems and circular economies.

Acquisition Avantium acquires the right to use Eastman’s FDCA- related patent portfolio

Avantium N.V., a leading technology company in renewable chemistry, announces that its subsidiary, Avantium Renewable Polymers, has signed a patent licence agreement with Eastman Chemical Company for the right to operate under Eastman’s FDCA-related patent portfolio. The Company believes that this patent licence agreement further paves the way for the commercial production of FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) and PEF (polyethylene furanoate) from Avantium’s FDCA flagship plant, which, dependent on a positive final investment decision, is planned to start up in 2023. The licence will also be available for any subsequent industrial scale facility built on the basis of Avantium’s FDCA and PEF technology. Under the agreement, Avantiumwill pay Eastman a licensing fee and ongoing royalty payments related to manufactured volumes. Payments will be partly made in Avantium shares. Avantium CEO Tom van Aken comments: “We are delighted that Eastman has granted us this licence. With access to these patent rights, we help safeguard our leading position in the field of FDCA and PEF. We look forward to growing our partnership with Eastman in the coming years.”

New Neck Standard BERICAP tethered solution available for the GME 30.40 neck finish BERICAP | Budenheim | Germany

The International Technical Centre for Bottling and Related Packaging CETIE is in the process of defining a new neck standard for carbonated beverages.

The new GME 30.40 neck standard has a thread diameter of only 26mm, reducing the weight of the neck and closure by between 1.4g and 1.7g, depending on the diameter of the neck support ring. The neck standard takes the latest trend of neck support ring diameter reduction – from the former standard of 33mm down to 29mm – into account. In contrast to other 26mm neck standards GME 30.40 will perform safely under all climatic conditions on bottle sizes of up to 3ltr. BERICAP has developed the 7049 closure for the GME 30.40 neck finish. The closure can be equipped with a tamper evident band which remains on the neck or the ClipAside tethered cut after opening by the consumer. ClipAside improves

the consumer convenience of the PET bottle because the closure can be opened and locked at an angle of 170-180 degrees, enabling unobstructed drinking from the bottle. Since the closure remains attached to the bottle it avoids littering.

INVISTA’s technology and licensing group, INVISTA Performance Technologies (IPT), and China Petrochemical International Co., Ltd. (“Sinopec Yizheng”) have reached an agreement for licensing of INVISTA’s industry leading PTA P8++ technology for Sinopec Yizheng’s third PTA line. This plant will be installed in Jiangsu province, China, with an annual name- plate capacity of 3 million tonnes. Sinopec Yizheng previously utilised IPT’s P6 PTA technology for its 450,000 te/annum second PTA line. Sinopec Yizheng and INVISTA are pleased to once more leverage this technology to create long-term value for both parties.

This is a further confirmation of INVISTA’s strategy of relentlessly improving its PTA technology offering, through a combination of increased scale, reduced capital and variable cost per tonne of PTA, and greater sustainability. During the recent project kick-off meeting, Mr. Guo Xiaojun, Sinopec Yizheng’s General Manager, expressed his trust in the INVISTA PTA technology and extended his gratitude towards the INVISTA project team.
