LIVING BY THE LAGOON BALI | TRAVEL | NAUTICAL

Nestled along the pristine shores of Nusa Dua, The Laguna Bali stands as an ode to the island’s captivating beauty, seamlessly weaving indigenous Balinese culture with modern elegance. A historic icon and legendary destination, the resort embraces a refined aesthetic inspired by the spirit of discovery and the nautical voyage of The Luxury Collection brand.

THE ABSTRACT BEAUTY OF JOHN RAYMOND AT THE LAGUNA BALI

If you look up in your room or pass through The Laguna Bali’s corridors, you might see a painting right now. A composition of neutral tones, fluid yet intentional, evoking both serenity and movement. Created by Jakarta-based artist John Raymond, these works are more than just decoration—they are an extension of The Laguna Bali’s timeless spirit, where nature and artistry intertwine in captivating harmony. John Raymond’s artistic journey began in the world of graphic design and illustration before he fully embraced painting, immersing himself in the boundless world of expressionist abstraction in 2017. Using acrylics, he explores the interplay between liquid and stillness, allowing the paint to move freely before settling into its final form. His approach is both gestural and lyrical, capturing emotions in each brushstroke. His works have graced galleries across Indonesia, but here, at The Laguna Bali, they find a unique home—one that mirrors his artistic philosophy. Just as The Laguna Bali is a sanctuary of fluid beauty, where the waves kiss the shore and the lagoons reflect the sky, John’s paintings embrace the same organic essence. Each canvas embodies a moment of transition, a balance between movement and stillness, much like the ebb and flow of the tide. To guests who pause and take in his art, John Raymond’s pieces offer more than just visual delight. They are an invitation—to linger, to reflect, and to experience the beauty of Bali not just in landscapes, but in the strokes of a brush, the depth of a hue, and the emotion captured within a frame.

A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES For Agus, sustainability is more than an operational goal-it is a personal commitment. Growing up in Indonesia, he witnessed firsthand how small, mindful actions could lead to significant change. Now, leading The Laguna Bali’s sustainability initiatives, he ensures that every decision prioritizes both guest comfort and environmental responsibility. “Global energy resources are limited, and it is crucial that we do our part,” Agus shares. “By integrating sustainable solutions into our daily operations, we can protect the planet while maintaining the highest standards of luxury.”

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION Guided by this philosophy, The Laguna Bali has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental impact. Energy efficiency is a core focus, with the resort implementing solar water heaters in villas to harness renewable energy, while LED lighting illuminates spaces with reduced electricity consumption. In guestrooms, advanced Room Control Units (RCU) automatically adjust air conditioning and lighting based on occupancy, ensuring energy is not wasted when rooms are unoccupied. “Technology plays a crucial role in making sustainability effortless,” Agus explains. “With smart systems in place, we reduce unnecessary energy use without compromising guest comfort.” Plastic reduction has also been a major initiative, replacing single-use plastics with more sustainable alternatives. Guestroom keys are now crafted from wood, while glass water bottles have replaced disposable plastic ones. Even the smallest details, such as swapping plastic straws for biodegradable paper straws, contribute to the resort’s larger goal of minimizing plastic waste. To further enhance efficiency, submeters have been installed to monitor water and electricity consumption in real-time, allowing the team to make precise adjustments that maximize conservation. RETHINKING WASTE & WATER MANAGEMENT Water conservation remains a top priority, and The Laguna Bali has introduced innovative solutions to reduce consumption while maintaining the lush beauty of its surroundings. At the heart of these efforts is the resort’s saltwater lagoon system, which significantly minimizes the need for chemical treatments. Instead of relying on artificial purification methods, the lagoon creates a self-sustaining ecosystem that enhances water quality naturally. To further support sustainable water management, the resort recycles treated wastewater for irrigation, ensuring that its tropical gardens flourish without excessive freshwater consumption. Additionally, the introduction of a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) system has provided an alternative water source that meets the resort’s needs while minimizing its environmental footprint. “Water is one of our most precious resources,” Agus reflects. “By implementing these measures, we are reducing our reliance on traditional water sources while ensuring the resort remains a sanctuary of natural beauty.” Waste reduction is another critical focus, with eco- conscious choices integrated into every aspect of the resort’s operations

From carefully selecting raw materials to controlling purchasing processes, the team ensures that excess waste is kept to a minimum. Leaf waste from the resort’s abundant greenery is composted, returning nutrients to the soil and further closing the loop on sustainability. “It’s about taking responsibility for every stage of the process,” Agus notes. “Sustainability isn’t just about grand gestures—it’s about making thoughtful choices every day.” LOOKING AHEAD The Laguna Bali continues to explore innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. Ongoing initiatives include: • Staff training and sustainability awareness campaigns to reinforce eco-conscious practices. • A targeted 3% reduction in carbon emissions, with plans to install solar panels on the ballroom roof. • A transition from LPG to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) by 2025, offering a cleaner and more sustainable energy source. “At The Laguna Bali, sustainability is a journey, not a destination,” Agus explains. “By continuously evolving our practices, we ensure that future generations can continue to experience the beauty of Bali.” Through these ongoing efforts, The Laguna Bali continues to lead in sustainable hospitality, preserving the island’s natural beauty for generations to come.

AGUS WIRANEGARA ON THE LAGUNA BALI’S GREEN INITIATIVES Nestled along the pristine shores of Nusa Dua, The Laguna Bali remains dedicated to preserving the island’s natural beauty through innovative sustainability initiatives. At the forefront of these efforts is Agus Wiranegara, Director of Engineering, whose passion for responsible hospitality has shaped the resort’s ongoing environmental advancements.

GUARDIANS OF THE SHORE

As the sun rises over Nusa Dua’s pristine shores, the rhythmic waves whisper a story of resilience-one that has unfolded for millions of years. Each year, during nesting season, sea turtles return to our beaches, guided by nature’s ancient call, to lay their eggs in the soft sands. This extraordinary cycle of life is a testament to the beauty and fragility of Bali’s marine ecosystem. But sea turtles are more than just mesmerizing creatures; they play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our oceans. As they glide through the currents, they help keep coral reefs thriving by grazing on seagrass, which prevents overgrowth and supports marine biodiversity. Their presence ensures that the delicate balance of the underwater world remains intact, benefiting countless other species that call the ocean home.

At The Laguna Bali, we are honored to be part of this journey. Every nesting season, our shores become a haven for these magnificent creatures, and we work closely with conservation teams to ensure their nests are protected. When the time comes, we witness a breathtaking moment—tiny hatchlings emerging under the moonlight, making their way to the sea, embarking on a voyage of survival. But our commitment to marine conservation extends beyond the nesting season. Meet Lulu, our beloved turtle-shaped recycling bin, a symbol of our dedication to protecting the ocean. Lulu isn’t just a mascot—she’s a reminder that every effort, no matter how small, helps preserve the delicate balance of marine life. By encouraging guests to dispose of waste responsibly, Lulu champions a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations of sea turtles. On World Turtle Day, May 23 rd 2025, we celebrate these gentle navigators of the sea-their resilience, their journey, and their vital role in our ecosystem. And as long as the tides continue to kiss our shores, The Laguna Bali remains committed to being a sanctuary where nature thrives and where every guest becomes a guardian of the ocean.

BANGLI REGENCY-INSPIRED THE PATTERN

INDIGENOUS BALI Nestled in the central highlands, Bangli takes center stage in this edition of Indigenous Bali, celebrating the island’s rich cultural and natural tapestry. As Bali’s only landlocked regency, Bangli captivates with misty landscapes, ancient temples, and enduring traditions. From the sacred heights of Mount Batur to the serene beauty of Penglipuran, one of the world’s most pristine traditional villages, Bangli offers a glimpse into Bali’s spiritual soul.

Adorning this edition of Indigenous Bali is a pattern crafted by artist Pak Made Wartawan, inspired by the intricate bamboo weaving of Kayubihi Village in Bangli. This design pays homage to sokasi bangli, a square-shaped woven craft deeply rooted in Balinese tradition. Sokasi is a handcrafted bamboo container created through a meticulous weaving technique that results in unique patterns. Originally used as a vessel for storing rice—its name deriving from sok nasi, meaning “rice container”—sokasi has evolved over time into an essential element of Balinese Hindu ceremonies. It now serves as a sacred vessel for banten (offerings) used in rituals and temple ceremonies.

The artisans of Kayubihi continue to preserve this heritage, incorporating intricate motifs such as Matahari (sun), Kincir (windmill), Lilin (candle), and many more, each carrying symbolic meaning. Reflecting the natural hues of bamboo, the pattern you see below captures both the beauty of Bangli’s craftsmanship and the enduring spirit of its people, honoring a legacy that has been passed down through generations. Turn these pages to journey deeper into Bangli, where ancient traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and timeless artistry await discovery.

CULTURAL LANDMARKS

PENGLIPURAN VILLAGE Penglipuran, a cherished Balinese village and recognized by the Dutch NGO Green Destinations Foundation among the top three cleanest villages in the world, is also dubbed the most peaceful. It preserves the Bali Aga heritage through its handicrafts, homestays, and adherence to Tri Hita Karana, the philosophy of harmony. Its name is believed to stem from pengeling pura (a place to honor temples and ancestors) or pelipur lara (a sanctuary of solace).

PURA ULUN DANU BATUR

Pura Ulun Danu Batur, the second most important temple in Bali after Pura Besakih, plays a vital role in maintaining the island’s harmony and stability. Representing the direction of the North, it is dedicated to Vishnu and Dewi Danu, the goddess of Lake Batur, Bali’s largest lake.

KEHEN TEMPLE Pura Kehen, a 13th-century Balinese Hindu temple in Cempaga, Bangli, was once the royal temple of the Bangli Kingdom. Nestled at the foot of a wooded hill, it symbolizes unity and harmony, offering a glimpse into Bali’s rich spiritual heritage. Marvel at the mystical Boma stone figures guarding the entrance and the majestic Kala-Makara sculptures representing cosmic balance. Named after the Balinese word for fire, Kehen was originally dedicated to Agni, the Hindu god of fire.

NATURAL RETREATS

WATER SANCTUARIES

PINGGAN VILLAGE Pinggan, a scenic village in northern Kintamani, is renowned for its breathtaking sunrises and campsites overlooking Mount Batur and the surrounding highlands. This enchanting destination, often blanketed in mist, is fondly called the “Village Above the Clouds.”

TUKAD CEPUNG WATERFALL Located about 25 kilometers from Ubud, Tukad Cepung Waterfall offers a mesmerizing retreat for nature lovers and adventurers. Unlike most waterfalls, it is encircled by towering cliffs, creating a breathtaking, otherworldly atmosphere. Reaching this hidden gem requires a scenic hike through dense forest and along a riverbed, where the tranquil sounds of nature enhance the journey. Its untouched beauty and sense of discovery make it an unforgettable Bali experience.

PENGLIPURAN BAMBOO FOREST Just 100 meters from Penglipuran Village, a serene bamboo forest offers a tranquil escape, accessible by foot or bicycle. Planted by ancestors and revered as sacred, the forest symbolizes deep historical roots and reflects the Tri Mandala and Tri Hita Karana philosophies, embodying harmony between nature, humans, and the divine. PINUS GLAGALINGGAH FOREST Not many people know that Bali is home to a pine forest, but Glagalinggah Pine Forest in Kintamani, Bangli, is a hidden gem and the island’s only pine forest. Nestled at 1,200 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Batur, this well-preserved sanctuary offers a serene escape. The area is surrounded by a farming community cultivating coffee, bananas, citrus fruits, and nuts, adding to its natural charm.

TIBUMANA WATERFALL

Nestled in the lush jungles near Apuan village, Tibumana Waterfall is a serene retreat away from Bali’s bustling tourist spots. Its gentle cascade flows into a clear pool, surrounded by vibrant rainforest, creating a picture-perfect paradise. Ideal for relaxation and reflection, Tibumana remains one of Bali’s best-kept secrets, inviting visitors to explore its tranquil beauty and refreshing natural pools. TOYA BUNGKAH HOT SPRING At the foot of Mount Batur lies Toya Bungkah Hot Springs in the village of Pekraman Batur, Kin-tamani. A 25-minute drive from downtown Bangli, these natural hot springs offer curative waters and captivating views of Mount Batur. This cherished location invites you to indulge in the soothing em-brace of naturally heated waters, renowned for their curative skin properties.

MOUNTAIN ESCAPES

MOUNT ABANG Mount Abang, Bali’s third-highest peak, offers a refreshing and less crowded alternative to the popular Mount Batur trek. Rising to an elevation of 2,152 meters (7,060 feet) above sea level, this hidden gem features a scenic 14-kilometer (8.7-mile) round-trip hike. The trek takes about 5–6 hours to complete and, despite its length, is relatively moderate, making it an appealing choice for those seeking a peaceful yet rewarding climb through lush forests and misty mountain landscapes.

MOUNT BATUR Mount Batur (Gunung Batur), an active volcano northwest of Mount Agung, offers an exhilarating trekking experience with panoramic sunrise views. The hike spans 3–5 km (2–3 miles) round trip, with reaching a peak of 1,717 meters (5,633 feet). Rated moderate in difficulty, the trek takes approximately 2–4 hours, making it a popular adventure for those seeking a rewarding climb amidst Bali’s stunning volcanic landscape.

Bangli: The Beating Heart of Ancient Bali Unlike Bali’s coastal regions, Bangli offers a refreshing contrast with its cool mountain air and lush highlands. But beyond its beauty, what truly sets it apart is its deep historical significance. “Bangli was once the center of ancient Balinese civilization,” Dewa shares, his voice laced with pride. “It is home to many ancient sites that prove it was once the heart of the Balinese kingdom.” Legends, too, are woven into Bangli’s soul. One of the most beloved tales still passed down through generations is the story of Sri Jaya Pangus, a Balinese king who married a Chinese princess, Kang Cing Wie. Their love, and the trials they endured, are immortalized in the towering figures of Barong Landung—two sacred effigies that continue to grace ceremonies and rituals across Bali. Bangli is also home to a great national hero: Captain Anak Agung Mudita. Born into the noble Puri Kilian family, Captain Mudita played a pivotal role in Bali’s independence movement. A highly educated man with a Dutch trade school background, he later joined the military and fought against Dutch colonial forces under I Gusti Ngurah Rai. Entrusted with leading guerrilla fighters in East Bali, he dedicated himself entirely to the nation’s freedom, embodying his lifelong motto: “One Hundred Percent Independence.” Traditions That Stand the Test of Time For Dewa, growing up in Bangli meant being surrounded by spirituality, artistry, and time-honored customs. “It shaped who I am,” he reflects. “It taught me to always prioritize ethics, to work with respect, and to preserve the traditions that make us who we are.” Bangli is home to traditions unlike anywhere else on the island, including: • The Trunyan Village Burial Rites, where the deceased are laid to rest in the open air, embraced by nature. • The Angkul-Angkul gates of Penglipuran Village, a symbol of heritage and resilience. • The Papah War at Pengotan Village, a ritual battle where locals engage in friendly combat. • The Ngerebeg Tradition, a vibrant parade of masked figures celebrating Kuningan Day. • The Ngelawang Tradition, a traveling performance of sacred Barong dances during Galungan. Among these many rituals, one holds a particularly special place in Dewa’s heart—the Sapuh Leger Ceremony. “It’s a purification ritual for those born during Wayang Wuku,” he explains. “It carries deep spiritual meaning and is a reminder of how intricately our lives are connected to the universe.”

A Taste of Bangli No journey to Bangli is complete without indulging in its unique culinary offerings. “You must try Mujair Nyat-Nyat,” Dewa insists, referring to the rich and flavorful freshwater fish dish that is a local favorite. Cooked with yellow spices, thick coconut milk, and a blend of traditional seasonings, this dish is best enjoyed at hidden warungs where the recipe has remained unchanged for generations. And for those looking to truly experience Bangli after dark, there’s Babi Guling Malam—a nighttime take on Bali’s famed roast pork, best enjoyed under the cool highland breeze. A Journey Through the Highlands For first-time visitors, Dewa has only one recommendation: “Start with Batur-Kintamani. It’s the soul of Bangli.” Towering over the landscape, the majestic Mount Batur and its crater lake create an awe-inspiring panorama— one that feels both timeless and humbling. It’s also where Dewa himself goes to unwind. “Kintamani is my sanctuary,” he reveals. “There’s nowhere else quite like it.” If Bangli were to be summed up in just three words, Dewa does not hesitate: Traditional. Heritage. Village. And in many ways, these words reflect not just Bangli, but Dewa himself—a guardian of tradition, a bearer of heritage, and a true son of his village.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK DEWA PUTRAYADNYA In the heart of Bali, where misty highlands cradle ancient temples and legends whisper through the trees, there is a regency unlike any other—Bangli. Steeped in history and culture, it is a place of profound spirituality, artistic expression, and unwavering tradition. And no one embodies its essence quite like Dewa Putrayadnya. Currently serving as the Manager of General Affairs & Associate Relations, Dewa is more than just a leader within his field. He is a storyteller, an artist, and an unwavering advocate for his people. The moment he speaks of Bangli, his passion is undeniable—an energy that draws people in, making him one of the most respected voices in the community. A skilled public speaker, Dewa actively works with foundations across Bangli, ensuring that local traditions are preserved and his people’s voices are heard. But what truly sets him apart is his profound love for the arts—as a dancer and a puppeteer, he breathes life into Bali’s most treasured cultural expressions.
