Les cyclistes aident les jeunes

Ils ont roulé dans Rockland vendredi ma- tin, un groupe à la fois, et ont rempli le stationnement de la succursale locale de la Banque Nationale du Canada (BNC). Les 150 cyclistes, tous des employés de la BNC de diverses succursales de l’ouest du Québec et de l’est de l’Ontario, étaient sur la route pour une tournée de quatre jours. Ils avaient quitté Buckingham le 7 juillet pour y retourner le 10 juillet, le tout pour aider à soutenir des projets et programmes locaux et régionaux qui viennent en aide aux jeunes. « C’est pour les jeunes », a déclaréMarie- Claude Gaumond, directrice de la succursale Rockland de la Banque Nationale. La succursale de Rockland n’avait pas de coureurs sur la route dans l’équipe de cette année pour les régions de l’ouest du Québec et de l’est de l’Ontario, mais les membres du personnel de la section locale, ainsi que quelques volontaires, sont venus, vendredi matin, accueillir les groupes de cyclistes qui se sont arrêtés aux stands pour savourer quelques brochettes de fruits frais, des poignées d’oursons de gélatine et en profiter pour remplir leurs gourdes avec Les cyclistes (à gauche) sont arrivés à Rockland vendredi matin pour se rendre à la Banque Nationale de Rockland. — photo Gregg Chamberlain

recreation and transportation for “everyday people”, especially those living in cities and towns who could use a bike to run around on for small errands, within a two or four- kilometre radius of their home, rather than use a car or truck. Jones reviewed examples of successful bicycle promotion projects and programs in other Ontario communities like Kitche- ner-Waterloo, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, and Belleville, through creation of designated bi- cycle lanes as part of new and existing street design plans, or development of “Sunday Brunch” group rides or “Glo-Ride” evening biking program for families with children. The latter example involves designating spe- cific street routes for evening cycling and providing glow sticks to fasten onto bikes to help make the riders stand out better as they follow the route. Louise Bissonnette, director for the Pres- cott-Russell Recreational Trail (PRRT), noted during the workshop that groups and indivi- duals within the region are already working on projects to help promote local cycling trails. She cited the Pancake Rider whichMoun- tain Equipment Co-Op organized in Russell Township, earlier this past spring. She also noted that the Grand Tour Desjardins, in mid-August of this year, will see more than 1500 cyclists making their way around Pres- cott-Russell, as part of a cycling tour that will pass through Hawkesbury, L’Orignal, and Alfred-Plantagenet Township. An international group would like to see Prescott-Russell become an official “bike friendly” community. Besides the good pu- blicity for the region’s recreational assets, it could alsomeanmoremoney coming in to Prescott-Russell’s tourism sector. “InOntario, cycling tourismhas become a yearly $391million industry,” noted Jacques Des Becquets, “and it keeps growing.” Des Becquets included the observation in a two-page summary report for the econo- mic development and tourismcommittee of Champlain Township, on a workshop gathe- ring, earlier in the season, with representa- tives from all of Prescott-Russell’s member municipalities and Justin Jones, an official based in Belleville ON, from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition (SRCC). The non-profit recreational promotion group wants eachmunicipality, in the Pres- cott-Russell region, to apply for designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community before the mid-October deadline for the program this year. The program began in the United States in 2000 and an Ontario branch formed in 2010. There is a partnership between the SRCC and Vélo Québec. The goal of the program is not just suppor- ting the “diehard cyclists”, who may spend up to $100 a day on their activity, but pro- mote cycling as both an inexpensive formof

Thieves steal fancy carriage
Police have a vehicle theft case of a different colour and kind. Someone stole a fancy carriage and the harness for the horse that pulls it. Over the Canada Day long weekend, the Hawkesbury OPP detachment got a call about a stolen horse carriage and the harness that goes with it. The carriage, a red Leon model, was im- ported from Europe and kept at a farm on County Road 10 inThe Nationmunicipality. The owners woke up Saturday morning
to discover someone had sneaked onto the farm during the night and left with their carriage and also a set of horse harness, black in colour. The combined value of the stolen carriage and harness is more than $30,000. Anyone with information about the theft can contact Const. Le nouveau Centre régional de santé mentale et toxicomanie (CRSMT) de l’Hôpital général de Hawkesbury (HGH a officiellement ouvert ses portes le 11 juillet. Le centre regroupe sous unmême toit les services communautaires de santé mentale et toxicomanie de l’HGH, qui étaient auparavant offerts dans quatre centres satellites à Hawkesbury. Les pro- grammes suivants seront relocalisés au CRSMT : Service de traitement en santé mentale, Service de gérontopsychiatrie, Service de toxicomanie et Équipe de crise. Le CRSMT est un nouvel édifice de trois étages, spécialement conçu pour répondre aux besoins de la clientèle. L’environnement est accueillant, cha- leureux et moderne, doté de nouvelles technologies informatiques, de com- munication et de sécurité. On y trouve plusieurs types de bureaux pour tenir
des séances de groupes, des thérapies individuelles et des tests psychologiques, en plus de salles familiales et de télémé- decine. Le nouveau centre améliore l’accès aux services pour les patients et leurs familles et facilitera le passage entre les différents programmes communautaires et les services internes de l’hôpital. « Au cours des derniers dix-huit mois, nous avons complété la construction du nouveau Centre régional de santé men- tale et toxicomanie, a indiqué le directeur général de l’HGH, Marc LeBoutillier. Ce projet a été réalisé de façon complètement autonome par l’hôpital, sans financement externe. Nous pouvons être fiers de ce projet audacieux et innovateur. À la conquête des pistes de motocross
Mikäel Savard et Yan Paradis sont deux amis mordus de motocross. Ces deux élèves de 9e année de l’École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet, ont pris part ré- cemment à une compétition demotocross sur la piste Sand Del Lee de Richmond en Ontario. Ils ont démontré leurs talents sur leur bolide en se mesurant à des dizaines de pilotes de différentes catégories. Mikaël course dans la catégorie Junior MX2 et Schoolboy 1. Il performe dans la SérieMMRS. Son père l’a initié aumotocross à l’âge de 4 ans et il a été sonmentor durant plusieurs années. Summer car care for pets During the hot summer months, the police often get calls about pets left shut up in vehicles. The OPP urge pet owners to make sure not to leave their pets alone inside a vehicle for long periods of time during hot weather or they may die from either heat exhaustion or heat stroke, even if the vehicle is parked in shade, the windows cracked open, and a bowl of water left inside. Leaving the air conditioning on is not a solution as a faulty AC system can also put a pet at risk. Dogs and cats both pant to cool themselves and also release heat through their paws. The upholstery and the air inside a car, both very hot during the summer, make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. Signs of heatstroke for a pet include: exaggerated panting or if panting stops altogether, rapid or erratic pulse, excessive drooling, an anxious or staring expression, weakness and muscle tremor, lack of coordination, red lips and tongue with both turning bluish at some point, convulsions, vomiting. Extreme heatstroke puts the pet into a coma and leads to death. Leave pets safe at home rather than take them shopping. – Gregg Chamberlain

Le Festival western, organisé par le Club Optimiste, envahit Wendover pour une 32 e édition cette semaine et offre des activités et des divertissements pour toute la famille. Le tout a commencé au Centre commu- nautaire Lucien-Delorme avec un whist militaire en soirée, le mardi 12 juillet, et a continué avec une visite au Zoo Papanack lemercredi 13 juillet. En soirée, la troupe de théâtre Markalou a présenté la pièce Last Call. Aujourd’hui, le jeudi 14 juillet, les festi- vités se poursuivent avec le Party des cam- peurs pendant la journée ainsi que le début des prestations musicales dès 19 h avec Syl- vain Dubois, Kathy Lavigne et autres. La musique reprendra le vendredi 15 juillet à partir de 13 h. Sophie Richard, Jay Lafrenière et le Coco Country Band seront parmi ceux qui se rendront sur scène. Un souper Saint-Hubert sera aussi disponible en soirée. En début de journée le samedi 16 juillet, des chevaux et chars allégoriques défileront dans les rues du village dans la cadre du défi- lé annuel du festival. Réjean Lavertue, Marc- André Lemieux et plusieurs autres s’occu- peront du divertissement musical jusqu’à l’heure du souper après quoi ils laisseront la place aux invités d’origine acadienne tels que Brian Mallery et Paul Dwayne. Pour clore le festival, une messe ‘wes-
tern’ aura lieu sous le grand chapiteau le dimanche 17 juillet avant de laisser place à la musique. Les derniers à monter sur scène en après-midi seront Les Cousins

Soirée réussie pour le club Optimiste de Rockland Le club Optimiste de Rockland a tenu son 41 e souper de homards le 4 juin dernier à l’aréna Jean-Marc Lalonde. Près de 760 personnes ont participé à cette soirée mémorable et ont profité de cet événement annuel pour fraterniser avec les gens de la communauté. Un tournoi de pêche amusant
Pour la deuxième année de suite, la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) a été l’hôte du tournoi de pêche familiale le 9 juillet dernier, à Plantagenet. Cet événement faisait la promotion de la pêche littorale et des opportunités récréatives le long de la Rivière Nation Sud, avec des jeux et la remise de prix aux participants, qui encourage les familles et les enfants à profiter des nombreux sites de pêche. Tourisme Prescott-Russell était présent ainsi que la Ottawa Flyfishers Society pour enseigner les techniques de la pêche à la mouche. Sept différentes espèces de poissons ont été identifiées sur le nombre total attrapées et mesurées. The Ninth Annual Good Samaritan Golf Tournament teed off at the Outaouais Golf Club in Rockland after the Canada Day long weekend, and the big winners, after the final foursome finished the last hole, are families of students in EasternOntario. The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) began the annual tournament as part of its fundraising efforts for the district’s Good Samaritan Trust Fund project, which assists students and their families in the CDSBEO’s area of operations, and also others who are in need. The July 5 tournament is one of the biggest fundraisers now for the CDSBEO Good Samaritan Trust and this year’s event amassed more than $23,100 through registration fees, sponsorships, and revenue generated through the silent auction. “Topday has been an outstanding day,” stated William J. Pushy scammers impersonate CRA employees and demand either personal information or payment for a made-up fee or back taxes. They will threaten arrest – or worse – if the fee is not paid immediately. Scammers also alter parts of their story in the hopes of victimizing more Canadians. In the latest variation, scammers ask that the payment be made via iTunes cards. Canadians have to be cautious to ensure their personal information remains confi- dential and avoid being duped. Before taking any action, taxpayers should always verify their tax account by checking My Account via the secure CRA portal or by contacting the CRA at 1 800 959-8281. Taxpayers suspicions of being the victims of fraud, or who have given personal or finan- cial information in error, should contact their local police service and financial institution. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) – a partnership between the RCMP, the Com- petition Bureau and the OPP – is Canada’s central repository for data and resourceS on marketing fraud. Ontario Power Generation Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board with a plan to increase the amount it charges for the output of its nuclear generating facilities and most of its hydroelectric generating facilities in each of the five years beginning on January 1, 2017 and ending on December 31, 2021. If the Ontario Energy Board approved the application as filed, Ontario Power Generation has calculated that the monthly bill for the typical residential customer using 750 kWh of electricity per month would change by the following amounts: 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 -$1.29 $1.73 $1.07 $1.86 $1.89 Other customers, including businesses, will be affected as well. THE ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD IS HOLDING A PUBLIC HEARING The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) will hold a public hearing to consider Ontario Power Generation’s request. We will question the company on its case for a payment amount increase. We will also hear questions and arguments from individuals and from groups that represent consumers of electricity. At the end of this hearing, the OEB will decide what, if any, increase will be allowed. If Ontario Power Generation’s application is approved, the OEB’s subsequent review in the years 2018 through 2021 may be limited to applying a formula that is tied to inflation and to ensuring certain annual adjustments are made in accordance with the approved payment amount plan. You may not receive further notice of those adjustments. The OEB is an independent and impartial public agency. We make decisions that serve the public interest. Our goal is to promote a financially viable and efficient energy sector that provides you with reliable energy services at a reasonable cost. Claudia Asselin, qui était de retour pour une deuxième année de suite sur la scène du parc Larocque. En tournée depuis la sor- tie de son troisième album intitulé Ouvre ton cœur, la chanteuse touche les specta- teurs avec ses compositions inspirées par ses souvenirs d’enfance. Elle a également un grand respect pour ceux qui ont pavé la voie, leur rendant hommage en paroles et en musique. La foule a particulièrement apprécié la chanson Soyons heureux, une ballade country classique pour les cœurs
amoureux. Durant le festival, l’annulation de l’hom- mage à Shania Twain a également été unmal pour un bien, car c’est le chanteur populaire Carol Renaud qui a empoigné sa guitare pour combler le vide.
