Hawkesbury Fire Chief leaving for Brockville

Pigeon said he looks forward to new chal- lenges and a new town. “There is a bigger water front and a bigger river,” explained Pigeon. “There are a lot of new stuff and things for us to enjoy. We are selling our house here in Hawkesbury and buying one in Brockville.” “I still have a great interest in fire service and fire protection,” said Pigeon. “Brockville offers a great opportunity and I decided to take that opportunity. It’s a larger commu- nity withmore full-time firefighters and two fire stations. It will be a nice challenge and an excellent opportunity.” Pigeon said there are plenty of things he will miss about Hawkesbury. “We have always been here,” Pigeon said. “We have lots of friends and neighbors that we will miss. But we will be back to visit.” Pigeon is succeeding Chris Dwyre, who retired as Brockville’s fire chief earlier this summer. Deputy Chief Renny Rayner has been acting chief in the interim.

Hawkesbury Fire Chief Ghislain Pigeonwill be leaving Hawkesbury August 28, and star- ting anew in Brockville as of September 1. Pigeon, now in his 35 th year of firefighting, has beenHawkesbury’s fire chief for almost 15 years. He started as a volunteer firefighter in Hawkesbury in 1980, and was hired full time in 1985. In 2001, Pigeon was promoted to fire chief. “I have been here for 35 years,” said Pigeon. “It is time to move on. I am leaving here withmy full pension. I decided to retire from Hawkesbury.” During that time, Pigeon has held the role of part-time fire chief with the nearby rural municipality of The Nation, as well as Hawkesbury Fire Chief. He was an active director on the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs for 10 years and worked with other boards and committees fromacross Ontario, such as the OntarioMunicipal Management Institute.

L’usine de Vankleek Hill sera modernisée Le canton de Champlain recevra d’importantes sommes gouvernementales pour la modernisation de l’usine de traitement des eaux usées de Vankleek Hill, grâce à un financement conjoint des gouvernements du Canada et de l’Ontario, dans le cadre du Fonds des petites collectivités. Lors de ce projet, l’usine de Vankleek Hill sera remise en état en vue de moderniser les installations vieillissantes. Une fois les travaux achevés, l’usine respectera les normes opérationnelles actuelles, améliorant la qualité des effluents dans le cours d’eau récepteur, et contribuant ainsi à assurer un environnement plus sain pour les résidents. Le gouvernement fédéral versera jusqu’à 2 958 162 $ tandis que le provincial injectera jusqu’à 2 958 162 $ dans le projet. La modernisation de l’usine fait partie des 77 projets qui ont récemment été sélectionnés par le Fonds des petites collectivités en Ontario pour un financement conjoint fédéral et provincial d’environ 260 millions $.

Le nageur repêché est Jacob Fernezan

Le jeune homme repêché sans vie dans la rivière Rouge, lundi soir, a été identifié comme étant Jacob Fernezan. Plusieurs sources, dont l’École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury (ESCRH), ainsi que le supermarché Indépendant de Hawkesbury, où travaillait Jacob Fernezan, ont confirmé le triste sort de ce dernier. Le Bureau du Coroner du Québec et la Sûreté du Québec n’ont cependant pas encore confirmé l’identité de la victime. Le corps du jeune homme, âgé d’une vingtaine d’années, qui était porté disparu

depuis le dimanche 9 août dernier, a été repêché par les plongeurs de la Sureté du Québec lundi soir. C’est vers 18 h 30, dimanche, que la disparition avait été signalée. Le jeune homme aurait tenté de traverser la rivière Rouge à la nage avec un ami. Ce dernier a été en mesure de gagner la rive sain et sauf. Les recherches ont été menées par les pompiers à l’aide d’un zodiac, mais elles n’ont pas été concluantes. L’opération pour retrouver le jeune homme avait repris lundi matin. Jacob Fernezan travaillait comme caissier au supermarché de l’autoroute 17, tout en poursuivant des études postsecondaires, lui qui avait obtenu son diplôme secondaire de l’ESCRH en 2014. Le décès a touché une corde sensible dans la communauté de Hawkesbury et les citoyens ont donné généreusement à une campagne de financement sur Internet pour aider la famille à payer les frais de funérailles. Plus de 13 000 $ avaient été amassés au moment de mettre sous presse jeudi matin et les dons sont encore acceptés à l’adresse www.gofundme.com/zafmh7dp. Ce sont les amis de Jacob, « les bandits » Andriko, Shawn, Dominik, Marco, Maxime, Marc- Olivier, Clément, Jessy et Jérémie, qui ont eu l’idée de la campagne Internet. Cette générosité a touché la famille de Jacob, qui qualifie « d’anges » la bande d’amis et qui remercie sincèrement les personnes qui ont fait un don.

Funding Initiatives for Rural Communities

«Many Pioneer employees and their fami- lies live and work in rural areas, and they are also volunteer firefighters,» said Tara Moir, public relations manager, DuPont Pioneer. «We’re proud to support these brave men and women, who voluntarily risk their lives to help their neighbors in times of need, and we want to make sure they have access to the tools and training they need to be safer.» Founded in 1926, DuPont Pioneer was the first company to research, develop and sell hybrid seed corn and focuses on helping farmers increase productivity of corn to sup- port their families, invest in their farms and build stronger rural communities. “Our farms are our biggest assessment,” said Mayor Gary Barton. “We certainly ap- preciate you being here tonight.”

Robert Lefebvre, Alain Levac, and Trevor Cunning of DuPont Pioneer presented a cheque for $5,500 to fire chiefs Richard Sincennes andMichel Martin at the Cham- plain Town Council meeting, August 5, as part of the Funding Initiatives for Rural Communities (FIRE) program. The FIRE program is an initiative launched by DuPont in 2013 to help assure the safety of first responders in rural emer- gencies.The programprovides much needed rescue equipment and training for rural fire departments and emergency services. “Themost noble people in the world are the volunteer fire department,” said Lefebvre. “It is a pleasure for us to be able to contribute to this area.” According to Perdue University, grain bin rescues are among the most common rescue situations emergency services that rural areas come across. In 2010 there were 51 entrapment incidents across southern Ontario and northern United States resulting in 26 deaths, emphasizing the importance of awareness, proper training, and equipment for firefighters. Vankleek Hill post office may close on Saturdays Canada Post sent a letter to Champlain Mayor Gary Barton explaining that it may be necessary to close the VankleekHill post office on Saturdays, and reduce the hours during the week. According to Canada Post, letter mail has been declining dramatically and higher fees may not be enough to keep the corporation afloat.The letter states that Canada Post has amandate of being financially self-sufficient and, as such, needs to make smart choices about maintaining local service while not becoming a burden on taxpayers. The Champlain council members along with Mayor Barton have serious concerns about the potential Saturday closure and realignment of hours. The main concern is many citizens in the Vankleek Hill area work out of town. As a compromise, Mayor Barton sug- gested extending hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays to 6:30 p.m. in order to accom- modate for a Saturday closure. Council agreed during the August 5 council meeting, to send a letter toMP Pierre Lemieux, as well as the postmaster regarding the opposition to the hour changes in Van- kleek Hill.The L’Orignal post office recently closed on Saturdays, and the Hawkesbury post office is not open Saturdays, leaving Vankleek Hill the only post office in the area with Saturday hours. Le 8 août, la bande du 69 a rocké le bar avec un spectacle, soufflant les bougies avec une tonne de décibels. C’est ce dernier qui est à l’origine du nomSixT9, une appel- lation aux origines grivoises, qui colle bien à la camaraderie qui unit les membres du groupe. « C’est un nom qui ne laisse personne indifférent et, oui, j’écoutais de la porno quand j’y ai pensé », a-t-il indiqué en riant. « Nous jouons de la musique ensemble depuis que nous sommes petits et nous n’allons pas nous le cacher, nous parlons de cul souvent et nous aimons ça niaiser !, a rajouté Steven Levac. SixT9, c’est parti avec l’idée de faire un show pour nos vieux chums au Déjà Vu l’année passée. Le bar était plein et nous sommes revenus pour les partys de l’Halloween et du jour de l’An. » Après le départ de deux membres du groupe, Pete Laliberté et Pat O’Reilly ont rejoint la bande du 69 et l’arrivée de ce der- nier permet au groupe d’avoir un bassiste et d’être moins dépendant des arrangements par ordinateur. « Avec Pat, cela a cliqué dès les premières notes, a indiqué Pete Laliberté. Avec l’arrivée de Pat, ce n’est plus le même feeling et nous ne sommes plus limités dans le temps. Avec les gars, je fais partie de la gang et le tout sonne bien car nous sommes de bons amis. Monter sur scène et chanter pour nos amis et notre place, il n’y a rien de tel. »

Polling made easy

What is the difference between a poll and a survey? Simply put, a poll is used to ask one simple question, whereas a survey is used to ask a range of questions. Éric Grenier helps to boil down the information and make it easier to understand. So why do people use polls? Polls are used for a number of reasons such as to foster engagement, improve customer satisfaction, market research, optimize a website, and to improve attribution tracking. However, polls are attributed mostly to opinion polls such as in an election. An opinion poll for an election asks voters whom they plan on voting for, to give an idea of who is ahead in the race, as well as people’s engagement in the electoral pro- cess. When taking into account that some people will change their mind in between answering the poll questions, and the elec- tion, and not all those that answer will cast a ballot, polls aren’t completely accurate, but it gives the powers that be a good idea of where things are going, and are usually surprisingly accurate in determining what direction an election is taking. CBC polls analyst and ThreeHundre- dEight.com founder Éric Grenier has de- veloped a poll tracker, a guide to the 2015 elections. The poll trackers assist people in finding out which parties are on top, results compared to the previous election, who might win if the election were to be held

Grenier grew up in L’Orignal and went to high school at Vankleek Hill Collegial Institute.The son of Serge and Lise Grenier, he was always interested in numbers, charts, maps and the like. “I don’t really remember when I got started in this,” said Grenier. “I have always found this stuff interesting so it

was a natural route for me to take.” Serge Grenier is the president of the Hawkesbury Golf and Curling Club and also runs Serge Grenier Adjustment Inc. Poker run du Club Mustang le 22 août

des cartes et le départ aura lieu au parc de la Confédération entre 10 et 11h. L’événement est ouvert au grand public et tous les types de voiture et de moto peuvent y participer. Seul ou en groupe, la randonnée est une occasion de profiter des dernières belles journées de l’été tout en appuyant une bonne cause. En effet, une partie des profits de la journée seront remis à la Fondation des maladies du cœur et de l’AVC, en mémoire
