Ready To Roll: AICC Recyclers Set For Ride At Joshua Tree BY SUSAN RILEY Some years back, Steve Young, AICC Ambassador At Large, and Guy Ockerlund, President of Ox Box, were having a conversation over drinks during an AICC national meeting and discovered that they were both longtime cyclists. As they were sharing all their adventures (Ockerlund raced in col- lege while Young raced as an amateur), an idea was born. Wouldn’t it be nice to have another networking activity during the meetings in addition to golf?
Sonoco To Close Paperboard Mill In Sumner, Washington Hartsville, South Carolina based Sonoco Prod- ucts Co., one of the largest global packaging companies, announced that it will permanent- ly close its uncoated paperboard (URB) mill operations in Sumner, Washington effective immediately. The mill has been in operation since 1915 and owned by Sonoco since 1980. It has a capacity of 40,000 tons per year. Sonoco said the decision was made as part of an ongoing strategy to optimize its mill network and lower operating costs. Current customers will continue to be served from other Sonoco mill operations. The closure is expected to impact 55 employees and Sono- co will offer severance benefits. “Closing facilities is never an easy deci- sion. The mill’s team has played an important role in Sonoco’s paper operations for over 40 years, and we appreciate the hard work and dedication of the entire team. As we continue to evaluate our manufacturing footprint based on the ability to cost effectively serve our cus- tomers, we are committed to provide support to our customers and employees through this transition,” said Palace Stepps, Sonoco’s Vice President of North America Paper Products & Fiber Supply.
They ran it through the grapevine, but it wasn’t all talk. The idea eventually gained traction and by the spring of 2018, they had orga- nized their first ride in Phoenix, Arizona. “We did a 50-mile ride the day before the meeting started and we’ve been doing something before every national meeting since,” Young said. “Our joke is, like all good initiatives, this started in a bar.” The group was small to begin with but has since grown to 35 people with a core group of 10 to 12 people who ride consistently. AICC Invites Young Professionals To Join Emerging Leaders Program AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, invites ambitious young professionals to join the Emerging Lead- er Program, an exclusive series of training, networking, and leadership opportunities for those 35 and under in the paper-packaging industry. The program offers participants the chance to grow into future leaders in their company and industry. PPC Opens Registration For Spring Folding Carton Boot Camp If you are ready to enhance your skills and help your or- ganization thrive, the Paperboard Packaging Council's Spring Folding Carton Boot Camp is for you. The PPC has announced that registration is now open for the event taking place at the PPC World Headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts on May 14-15. Participants will learn everything one needs to know about folding cartons directly from the industry experts. The Boot Camp is designed for those new to cartons or the industry and non-plant personnel with limited experi- ence outside a single plant operation. This two-day training program will provide a unique, hands-on experience that teaches attendees about topics such as prepress, printing, cutting, gluing, windowing, rig- id boxes, automatic packaging, cold and hot foil, tooling, laminating, and more. Some of the most enjoyable rides offer an outdoor experience that awes and inspires with beautiful landscapes and attractions. “There’s no better way to see something than on a bike,” Ockerlund said. “Walking is too slow to take in enough scenery, a car is too fast, but a bike is the perfect speed to take in a lot of terrain and different things to look at. I think it’s one of the reasons that these rides have been so successful.” Plus, cyclists enjoy the mystique. “It’s a stealth sport among AICC members. Not everybody talks about their cycling,” Young said.
Young said that several companies, eProductivity Software, Viking Paper, Dicar, Ox Box, Arden Software, and Cascades among them, have supported them in the past, providing water and snacks along their routes which has been greatly appreciated. Ockerlund enjoys watching the newcomers in the group experience something different. “If you take somebody who doesn’t ride a lot and we do one of these rides, it can be challenging for them, but at the end when you get togeth- er and have some social time afterward, it really brings people to life,” he said. The “coming to life part” happens on the van ride back to the hotel when they pop open a celebratory bottle of Prosecco while everyone’s endorphins are still pumping. “Everybody’s all excited and super chatty and that kind of illustrates what happens to people after they get some exercise and they challenge themselves a little bit,” Ockerlund said. “This is just a different way to connect with people.” Those connections sometimes lead to business opportunities as was the case when Ockerlund met Jim Silianoff, President of Arden Software, on one of the rides. “We got to chatting and I didn’t really know what he did, and he didn’t really know what our shop did, and it gave us a chance to chat, and one thing led to another. We just bought their whole system, and we just in- stalled it last month,” Ockerlund said. On the road: AiCC’s Recyclers tackle a grade in Joshua Tree National Park, in April 2022.

The AICC Recyclers group launched before Covid with just a handful of people and grew to the point that there were not enough bikes to rent for everybody and they needed several vans to get them to their starting points. But Young always “works his magic” with the bike shops so that everything works out, Ockerlund said.

While the group shrunk during Covid, it has since bounced back. “Part of that is due to some of the folks coming from Canada. The Canadians tend to be avid cyclists. When we get the Canadians involved, you tend to get a bigger group,” Ockerlund said. “It’s fun having them.” Joshua Tree National Park will be the setting for the AICC Recyclers’ next adventure. The particular area where they will ride is high desert, which is windier and 10 to 12 degrees cooler than low des- ert, at around 3,500 feet in elevation with long stretches of gradual descent and ascent. There is not a lot to block the wind, which is challenging, but Young said it is a beautiful ride, and there will be two: a 35-miler and a 60-miler de- pending on one’s abilities.

groups. “We went along the coastline, we were in neighbor- hoods, we would stop to get something to eat some- where. We took pictures by the beach. It was just a really fun event with a variety of different terrain and a variety of different things to look at,” Ockerlund said. “And the Canadian contingency was there on that ride, so they wanted to really push the pace a little bit and it was fun, we had a good time.” While Joshua Park is a national park and there is a lot of vehicular traffic on weekends, the speed limit is 35 mph which makes it nice for the upcoming event, Young said. This year, the group will be renting bikes from Big Wheel Tours. “It really is great networking. Friendships have been formed. We’re all anxious to get together again,” Young said. While most people know how to ride a bike, not every- one is up for the 60-mile rides so the shorter routes can be a better option depending on one’s fitness level, but safety is always key. That’s why those joining the AICC Recyclers are expect- ed to know the rules of the road and how to stop properly. They must wear proper reflective equipment and a helmet, and bikes must be equipped with lights. This ride will mark the second time they have biked Joshua Tree. Ockerlund said it was warm there the spring of 2022, but nothing like the heat on their summertime ride in Miami, Florida.

New Episode Of Breaking Down Boxes Features Central Pkg & Display Hosts Gene Marino, President, Akers Packaging Service Group, and Joe Morelli, Vice President of Sales & Market- ing, Huston Patterson Printers and Lewisburg Printing Co., are joined by Jim Haglund, Chairman, and Mike Haglund, CEO & Owner, of Central Package & Display, in Be Some- where First, the latest episode of Breaking Down Boxes. Jim Haglund always had a job. He eventually landed at a distributor, where he got to know independent box makers. One of their suppliers was a sheet plant named Central Container Corp. After an encounter with one of the original owners, Jim proposed buying his half of the com- pany. The company had a different succession plan, but the owner sold his 50 percent to Jim anyway because he knew Jim would succeed. Mike Haglund started at Central mowing the lawn and opening mail when he was 10 years old. He continued to work summers there throughout college. After graduating college, Mike built a successful career, which included run- ning a scrap yard and purchasing two packaging supply companies. Eventually, his father wanted to acquire his companies and fold them and him into Central, and Mike was ready to return to the family business. “Jim and Mike are true entrepreneurs. I have a great deal of admiration for both and am happy they shared
their story,” said Marino. Great Northern Corp.
