Le Parti conservateur du Canada a annon- cé, la semaine dernière, la candidature de Maxime Hupé-Labelle dans la circons- cription d’Argenteuil-La-Petite-Nation. C’est le mardi 11 août dernier que la candidature de M. Hupé-Labelle a été officialisée par le Parti conservateur du Canada. « L’époque où l’on se faisait dire que les valeurs conservatrices n’étaient pas des valeurs québécoises est terminée », a

déclaré le candidat, qui compte mener sa campagne de front en abordant des sujets tels que l’économie, la création d’emplois et la sécurité nationale. The Catholic District School Board of Eas- tern Ontario (CDSBEO) website states there are currently no plans to strike, however talks are ongoing. “We are continuing to monitor the province-wide education labour situation, and will post new developments to this loca- tion as soon as information is available. This could include no afterschool clubs, no sports, no extracurricular activities, no notes home and more. Teachers have to put up with a lot to care for and teach Ontario’s future. In just about two weeks school buses will be back on the road and kids will be back in school, hopefully. The summer months go by very fast when you’re a kid. For parents, perhaps not fast enough. With school starting in just a few short weeks, getting back into routine is just around the corner. However, labour talks may change all that, or at least limit what goes on in the classroom. Nonetheless, preparation for going back to school still needs to be done. It’s time for school supplies and back to school clothes. According to the Catholic District School Board of Ontario school supply list, there are a lot of supplies to consider, which can get very pricey. Pencils, pens, markers, glue, erasers, scissors, lined paper, graph paper, printer paper, binders, dividers, calculators, dictionaries, sharpeners, geometry sets, agendas, staplers and remo- vers, and so much more can run up a big tab especially if there are more than one or two children in the family. The best way to save money on all these supplies is to pick them up when they go on sale, or at the end of the season. Not that this helps much at the moment, but something to keep in mind for the next time around. With all there is to worry about going back to school, this year adds the concern of a possible

because it will cover the sampling expense for the project. The goal is to get 175 samples from the entire township area, using a gridworkmapping systemof representative samples. So far, the SNC has collected 100 samples and technicians hope to have more before the August 28 deadline on the project. Some of the samples are tested on-site and results recorded about water quality and content. Others may go to a private lab for analysis with the OGS covering the expense. Landowners whose wells were sampled as part of the survey will receive a copy of the lab report on their well water at no cost to them. After all the samples collected by the end of August are analyzed, the data will be used to create a groundwater quality map of the township. The goal is to have both the map and analysis report ready for presentation to the township and other interested parties by the end of 2016. Di Iorio noted that, where Alfred-Plantage- net Township is now, it was once part of the Champlain Sea during prehistoric times. When the land shifted and the Champlain Sea drai- ned away, the ancient sea bed became part of the township’s underground profile. Below the marine sediment layer may be trapped pockets of ancient sea water which could result in a salty taste to the water of a well. In other parts of the township, the below- ground profile may feature shale bedrock and limestone and below them pockets of sulphur- taintedwater that could give a «rotten egg» smell to well water. The groundwater map will help

identify these areas and also areas where there are no problems with the overall water quality. So far, Di Iorio noted there has been good res- ponse from landowners contacted about provi- ding samples of their well water for themapping study. There are still areas where SNC needs to

Homeowners using wells for their drinking water supply may want to contact the South NationConservationAuthority.Their wellsmay be key to successful completion of a groundwa- termapping study that would be a real benefit to future development in the township. Since the end of June, technicians with the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) have been collecting water samples from wells in Alfred-Plantagenet Township. The samples are tagged, examined, and the data entered in SNC records as part of a groundwater mapping survey project. SNC project representative Tessa Di Iorio explained that the survey has many potential benefits both for individual property owners and for the township at large. «The goal is to collect groundwater samples across the whole municipality and create a groundwater map,» Di Ioria said, adding that themapwill be useful both for local landowners and also for developers deciding where to locate new housing projects. «It’s a great pre-screening tool for developers,» she acknowledged, adding that the map can provide information on both the water quality in a particular area and provide clues about the underground profile which may affect the water quality. The SNC is partneredwith the United Coun- ties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), the township and the OntarioGeological Survey (OGS) on the mapping project.The OGS involvement is critical

Growing up green and one hundred years of 4-H in Ontario was celebrated at the Vankleek Hill Fair August 13 to 16 with hundreds of people in attendance to enjoy the shows, themidway, and the demolition derby amongst other traditional favourites. Although the weather was a little soggy as the fair got under way, the weather started to cooperate and attendees didn’t seem to mind the mud. The Horse Pull and Wild Horses Games showwere cancelled for Fri- day evening, and the Heavy Horse Show and Western Horse Show were cancelled for Saturday due to the muddy conditions. Nonetheless, people came out in droves

to enjoy this traditional favourite summer event. The fair opened up with a parade Thur- sday evening, with spectators lining the streets of Vankleek Hill. The fair continued with lots of entertainment and activities, including a midway, flower and home craft displays, a petting zoo, amodel train exhibit, home-baked goods, dancers, a mustang show, bands, and the demolition derby, a fair favourite.,. The demolition derby The derby got off to a bit of a slow start with all the mud in the pit. Wheels were spinning, cars were smoking, and crowds were cheering. “It’s usually a lot faster,” said Peter King, announcer for the derby. “The track is amess and tires are just spinning. It’s a lot better when it’s dry.” Albert Brady was very excited to win the raffle to drive one of the pit cars. Winners in the first show were Nat Burroughs in car #14 and Lance Stewart in car #8 tying for first and second place, Morgan Allen in car #2 in third place, and Denver Bates in car #15 in fourth place.

La grande estrade était pleine à craquer lors de la parade ouvrant les festivités de la 121 e édition de la foire agricole de VankleekHill. Le thème de l’événement cette année, Growing Up Green, a attiré plusieurs participants dont le député provincial Grant Crack, le maire de Champlain, Garry Barton, ainsi que le maire de Hawkesbury Est, Robert Kirby, qui se sont joints à la parade. Un camion original de 1952 de la flotte des pompiers de Vankleek Hill a impressionné la foule, en plus des nombreux autres participants au défilé.

Mont Rigaud upgrades for new winter season

Mont Rigaud ski resort owners, Luc Elie and Karine Labbé, announced an investment of more than $400 000 for the realization of major projects for the 2015-2016 season, including installation of a loading carpet to the quadruple chairlift, renewing of the drive station, the addition of new slopes and a new website promising an exciting

winter for snow sports lovers this year. TheMont Rigaud quadruple chairlift will soon welcome a new loading carpet. This technology offers numerous benefits to sa- fety improvement for skiers and snowboar- ders, chairlift speed acceleration, reduced stops, easier boarding, increased fluidity at the base of the mountain and much more.

This winter, skiers and snowboarders will get the opportunity to explore two new slopes at Mont Rigaud. An official glade trail from south to west, called the Pic Bois, with a length of 1127meters, and an extension of the Qui-sait-tout, with a length of 758meters, the remains of the T-bar (1964-2015) will be grafted to the other slopes of the ski resort.

Other improvements include upgrading the electrical system, renewing themain and backup engines, upgrading the return station pulley and gearbox, adding tower heads for employee’s safety and renewing the towers communication system.

There are some major investments and upgrades at Mont Rigaud for the 2015-2016 season.

Hubs of Hope The second annual Hubs of Hope will be taking place Saturday, September 26, and there is still plenty of time to join. Individuals or families can get together to raise money and offer support for local cancer patients to travel to their treatment through the Wheels of Hope Program. Volunteer drivers provide transportation as well as a friendly supportive atmosphere along the way. Points of departure include Station 4 Saisons, 1422 Lavigne Road in Hammond; Bourget Pavilion in Cla- rence-Rockland; Vankleek Hill Pavilion in Champlain; or simply from home. The destination is the Plantagenet Pavilion in Prescott-Russell Recreation Trail at noon. Participants can cycle, walk or run up to 50 kilometres, and are asked to raise a minimum of $100 each or $300 per family. Everyone is welcome. In 2014, volunteers provided transportation services to 390 local cancer patients living in S.D.G. & Prescott-Russell, providing 5,990 free client and escorted trips, driving 346,821 kilo- metres. The program also provided 28 children and their families with transportation and pediatric assistance. More information is available at www.cancer.ca/hubsofhope. ~ DH

Phair warning against phishing phriends

The summer fishing season has settled in. But police are warning that some particu- lar types of phishermen are also trolling around the Internet looking for someone to hook with their phony email scams. The OPP Anti-Rackets Branch has posted an alert about phishing con ar- tists. Phishing is an email tactic used for identity theft. Phishing involves sending fake emails under the guise of an actual company, a government agency, or a non- profit group. Some phishing scams send emails from fake groups but with enough convincing detail in the email text tomake it seem legitimate. The phishing email will either suggest that the target’s account information is out of date or that something has happe- ned to the group’s information data files and that all clients need to renew their accounts. This particular phishing con is called “brand spoofing” and the aim is to get the target of the con to go to a website or reply to the email and provide perso- nal and financial identity information. The phisher then uses the information to

plunder the victim’s bank account or run up huge credit card debts. Last year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) received almost 2,500 com- plaints about phishing scams that cost vic- tims a combined total of almost $250,000. Anyone with a computer is urged to get their IT provider to make sure the anti- virus software is updated and the email filter and firewall enhanced to weed out most phishing emails. Users are urged not to reply to any email that asks for perso- nal identify or financial information.They should also be on the lookout for spelling or grammatical errors that indicate an email written in a hurry or by someone not familiar with the recipient’s native language. Phishing emails can be reported to the Internet provider and the police or the CAFC. The OPP Anti-Rackets Branch will take information at 705-329-6437.The Cri- meStoppers confidential tips line at 1-800- 222-8477 will also accept anonymous tips about phishing scams.

Herb’s gives back to its customers

Herb’s annual Customer AppreciationDay took place August 12, with hundreds of people in attendance, enjoying a free bar- becue and a chance to give to Sacha’s Park. Each year, Herb’s Travel Plaza hosts a free barbecue and corn roast to say thank you to its loyal customers, and perhaps attract a few new ones. Herb’s representative, Jennifer Vink, explains that each year, they select a worthy cause to support during the event. “We try to focus on smaller local causes that oftentimes don’t get as much attention as the big charities. The Sacha’s Park project was brought to us by an employee, Mitch Jones, who had read about it in a local paper.

Hundreds of people were lined up to benefit fromHerb’s Customer AppreciationDay. A free barbecue with hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, drinks, and cake were offered to loyal customers and passersby.

It immediately seemed like a perfect fit, as it is something that will benefit the com- munity as a whole. A playground where all children will be able to play together is such a wonderful idea.” The park is being built in memory of Sacha Chenier, an 11-year-old boy from L’Orignal who had several disabilities. He died last year due to complications fromepi- lepsy. Sacha was never able to play in a park with other children, as most parks are not wheelchair accessible. “It was such a great experience to see somany people supporting this project inmemory of my little brother,” said Sebastien. “It will be really cool to see kids like him enjoying the playground with everyone ˪ else someday.” Sacha’s Park will be a fully accessible park where children

of all abilities will be able to play together. The day included music, activities, and prizes. “There has been a great turnout,” said Jason Chenier, Sacha’s father.The Che- nier family is spearheading the park project. Jason, Jackie and Sebastien have been orga- nizing fundraising events to build the park. “This is a great opportunity for us to get out there andmeet people and explain what the project is about.” So far, the park has raised more than $119,000 through its many fundraising events and generous donations. Herb’s Cus- tomer Appreciation Day raised more than $6,500 towards the building of Sacha’s Park. RBC donated $1,000 and presented a check to the Chenier’s during the event. “It was great to learn about the wonder-

ful endeavor that the Chenier family have embarked on in order to fulfill their dream of someday having a play space for children of all abilities,” said Cynthia ˪ Desjardins, RBC commercial manager for Hawkesbury and the surrounding area. “We are happy to help in making their someday a reality.” Sacha’s Park fundraising efforts will conti- nue at an upcoming Zumba Mega-Party hosted by Lou Stephenson on August 29th at the Vankleek Hill Arena.
