ROCKLAND | Malgré une mise en de- meure, la lettre du maire aux citoyens ainsi que les documents traitant des en- tentes entre la municipalité et l’ex-direc- teur général Daniel Gatien n’ont pas été retirés du site Web de Clarence-Rockland dans le délai accordé. Selon la mise en demeure, la municipali- té avait jusqu’au 29 août en soirée pour retirer les documents du site Web, ce qui n’a pas été fait. «Ça ne me surprend pas, a confié Daniel Gatien. Ça tend à prouver que le maire Guibord a définitivement un agenda. C’est lui qui a diffusé l’information, donc c’était sa responsabilité de la retirer. Dès lors, avec mon avocat, on va établir la prochaine étape.» Les documents ainsi que la lettre du maire avaient été diffusés le 12 juillet dernier. Dans sa lettre aux citoyens, le maire affirmait que dans les documents «il y a suffisamment de preuves pour soulever de sérieuses préoccupations sur la façon dont les fonds publics auraient été abu- sivement utilisés…» En publiant les documents en question, le maire disait vouloir «faire mon devoir public […] de signaler aux autorités tout soupçon d’une activité illégale ou crimi- nelle», peut-on lire dans son communiqué aux citoyens.

Based on the writ, Mayor Marcel Guibord has demanded a list of all phone calls to and from staff at City Hall during the period from July 1 to August 12. The demand also requires city clerk Mo- nique Ouellet to provide copies of all her email correspondence for that period. Ac- cording to a Radio-Canada report the exact
reason for the demand for the emails and the phone call lists is not given in the legal advisory. The Vision has left a message Aug. 30 with the mayor’s office on the matter. Mayor Gui- bord left a callback notice after hours in re- sponse but was in a meeting Sept. 3 when the Vision called back and was not available for comment by press time. A message was also left Aug. 30 with the
Ontario regional office of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) for com- ment on thematter and also to explain if the union has any concerns that the demand interferes with employees’ right to privacy under the provincial or federal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legis- lation. Sanderah Charron is working on behalf of her sister who lost her boyfriend, “her best friend, the love of life” to suicide as a result of severe depression. “She was a victim in all of this tragedy,” stated Charron, “as she was the one who found him.” They have an online fundraiser project in %/0!./ŏ/!!'ŏ/1,,+.0ŏ"+.ŏ1% % !ŏ3 .!*!//ŏ!!' place to gather $500 worth of pledges for the Ottawa Hospital’s mental health treat- ment program. They also want to promote greater awareness of Suicide Prevention Week, in Canada. “I want to create awareness about this ill- ness,” said Charron, “and for the people who need treatment in order to get better. Police remind the public that large banks, government agencies, and major compa- nies do not use email to contact individuals if there are any problems. Phone requests to schedule face-to-face meetings to review the situation are standard procedure and no personal I.D. information is ever asked for either by email or over the phone in such cases. Anyone who receives this kind of email should contact the group identified in the message as the alleged sender and let them know about the suspect situation right away. Then contact police and file a report.

The OPP have issued a warning about a suspicious email going out from an un- named Canadian telephone courier. The email follows one of the traditional patterns of the “bank manager con” routine, stating that there is a problem with a person’s ac- count and they need to provide some per- sonal information to help clear up the prob- lem. The email lists credit card numbers, social insurance number, driver’s licence number, and various other kinds of privileged and private personal identification as necessary to fix the problem.

En plus d’une collection d’anecdotes destinées au public, Gérald Beauchamp avoue qu’il souhaite faire un legs à ses petits enfants. «J’ai lu quelque part que lorsqu’un vieillard meurt, c’est comme une bibliothèque qui s’envole en fumée. Ça

À ne pas en douter, Gérald Beauchamp ne pourrait être plus heureux de raconter ses histoires. Lorsque rencontré pour une entrevue, il présentait son livre comme on le ferait un album photo. À travers les pages, il se remémore de tendres moments qu’il n’hésite pas à partager. Il a notamment partagé un moment où un petit garçon lui sollicitait son aide pour charmer une camarade de classe. «Il m’avait dit: Père Noël, j’ai un gros problème, j’aime une fille à l’école, mais L’Est ontarien a maintenant sa carte agroalimentaire. C’est là l’aboutissement d’un vœu expri- mé de longue date par le Réseau agroali- mentaire de l’Est ontarien. La carte propose 82 sites où se procurer des produits frais de la ferme dans Prescott, Russell, Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry et la région de Cornwall. Les producteurs y sont à l’honneur, les marchés qui offrent leurs produits et les restaurateurs qui les mettent en vedette, notamment. Ajoutez à cela quelques leçons sur la signification du Père Noël expliquées selon la plume de Gérald Beauchamp. en un coup d’œil, le type de production ou de service en un point donné, comme elle donne une appréciation rapide de la concentration d’entreprises dans une ré- gion. À ceux qui associent les découvertes gourmandes à leurs déplacements, l’outil est tout désigné. En fait, l’agrotourisme est en plein essor, estiment les intervenants du milieu et la carte sera toute désignée pour encourager ce mouvement. L’initiative, qui a coûté 12 000$, a été fi- nancée à parts égales entre les Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell, les Comtés unis de Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry et le Réseau agroalimentaire de l’Est ontarien. ROCKLAND | The next phase is underway on the Rockland Plaza project. Developer Brent Harden announced that negotiations are almost complete for a new 8000-square-foot addition to the commer- cial centre on County Road 17 with a na- tional-brand franchise expected to set up shop. The name of the store is under wraps at present until the lease agreement is com- pleted but Harden expects to be able to an- nounce the latest addition to the plaza later this month. Meanwhile Harden has confirmation of interest from three national franchises who
Second Cup and Dairy Queen want to set up outlets in Rockland at the plaza. Details on these franchises are available from Alex- andra Harden, plaza marketing coordinator, at 613-983-7404. She also is coordinating with representatives for The Brick, OK Tire and Femmes en Forme, which have ex- pressed interest in Rockland as part of their upcoming expansion plans. This year’s Foire Gourmande/Food Festival proved a great success again for food pro- ducers and servers on both sides of the Ottawa River in Eastern Ontario andWestern Québec. This year’s People’s Choice Awards for Eastern Ontario participants present- ing their wares in Lefaivre proved a tough round to call but the final overall winner was L’Orignal Packing for its excellent selection of local cuts of meat. The runner-up title went to Cakes on St-Philippe for its tasty table full of homebaked goodness. OC Transpo boosts Cumberland Ward routes

Police have a hit-and-run case of a differ- ent sort on their hands. Const. Bruce Quevillon responded to a call about an accident on County Road 17 Aug. 23. A motorcyclist was hit with a flying mat- tress that fell from a U-Haul truck whichwas driving in the opposite lane of the road. The motorcyclist lost control of his bike when he was hit and suffered some slight injuries. He was taken to Montfort Hospital for examination and later released. The police report on the accident states the driver of the U-Haul truck stopped but then left as soon as he realized the flying mattress had injured someone. Police have enough details to identify the driver for an arrest warrant for failing to re- main at an accident site. Police have not re- leased the suspect’s name yet.

With autumn still a few weeks away the regional health unit warns residents to remain mosquito-wary until the frost ar- rives. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) maintains a mosquito monitoring program as part of its early-warning and prevention program for West Nile virus and other in- sect-borne diseases. The latest collection of mosquitoes caught in traps and examined resulted in a few of them showing signs they are carrying either the West Nile virus or the Eastern equine encephalitis virus. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief medical officer, urged residents not to panic but to continue to take the normal precautions ! (0$ŏ1*%0ŏ0. ,/ŏ!/0ŏ%(!ŏ)+/-1%0+!/ against mosquitoes, as the infected ones can spread either disease through their bite. “Although there has never been a report- ed human case of Eastern equine encepha- litis in Ontario,” he stated in a press release, “it is a very serious disease in all ages, and can even cause death. For this reason we urge all residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites.” Since theWest Nile virus made its way into Canada, the EOHU has maintained a moni- toring program which involves catching mosquitoes in sampling traps and then ex- amining their remains for signs of the virus or of any other insect-borne disease. There have been no human cases reported yet of

point, car c’est moins évident. Mais il y a des traverses piétonnières qui peuvent être créées avant le rond-point». Que ce soit l’installation de feux de circu- lation ou d’un rond-point, la municipalité devra se pencher plus attentivement sur ce dossier. Un rond-point pourrait également engendrer des coûts plus élevés alors que la configuration de l’intersection devrait être modifiée. «Chose certaine, on n’imposera rien qui pourrait mettre la sécurité des gens en péril», a souligné Gilles Maranda.
