Samuel Cardarelli, 33 years old, born and raised in Rockland, is the newest candidate as councillor for Clarence- Rockland’s Ward 1 of Rockland. Cardarelli has been a volunteer firefighter for the Clarence-Rockland Fire Department since 2015, is the president of the Clarence- Rockland Firefighters Association, was one of the founders of the «It’s Your Community» initiative and has been president of the Clarence Creek Adult Hockey League since 2014, amongst other activities. He mentioned that his priorities as councillor would include promoting the municipality’s economic development, seeking additional tax revenues, maintaining good services &/#3&'r#3*&'4 NEW EMERGENCY PLAN The City of Clarence-Rockland has a new official Emergency Plan for dealing with local disaster situations, like last year’s flooding of the Ottawa River, and also potential disaster situations. Council approved Bylaw 2018-116 during its August 13 session, making the 80-page document the official updated reference guide for city officials, volunteer groups, and others during an emergency scena- rio. Council approved Bylaw 2018-117, authorizing a contract during its Aug. 13 session. Contract value is $90,370, not including HST. The company was the successful of six bidders for the contract. Many of the major lines for Rockland’s underground mains date of the period from 1950 to 1960 nd are showing their age. Donald Veilleux is running for Mayor of the City of Clarence-Rockland, against incumbent Mayor Guy Desjardins. “The mayor of my city will be elected democratically and not by acclamation,” stated Veilleux. He explained that one of the main reasons he decided to throw his hat in the ring is to uphold the democratic practice – he believes the people should always be given a choice and that no elected official should be put in office for lack of another option. “Half the Council was elected by acclama- tion,” said Veilleux. “It defeats the purpose.” Four of the eight Clarence-Rockland council- lors were, in fact, elected by acclamation, including Mario Zanth, André J. Lalonde, Carl Grimard and Christian Simard. Veilleux is also running because he hopes to bring fresh ideas and goals to the city. “I really like Clarence-Rockland, but I don’t think it is going in the right direction,” he said. Veilleux has lived in Clarence-Rockland for almost 14 years now. “It is a bedroom community, there is very little industry and it has now just become a place to rest your hat.” Veilleux’s main goal is to get as many people involved in politics and in their city. He wants to spend money in the community to attract people to Clarence-Rockland, which will in turn bring money into the pockets of the businesses. “From what I hear,

Le conseil a décidé, lors de sa réunion du 13 août, de laisser le siège vacant pour les quelques semaines qui restent, depuis l’acceptation de la démission de M. Berlinguette pour des raisons personnelles. Pendant ce temps, le maire Guy Desjardins et les autres membres du conseil traiteront les demandes de renseignements et les demandes d’aide des résidents du quartier 4. NEXT TIME THERE’S AN EMERGENCY THERE’S A NEW PLAN
The City of Clarence-Rockland has a new official Emergency Plan for dealing with local disaster situations, like last year’s flooding of the Ottawa River, and also potential disaster situations. Council approved Bylaw 2018-116 during its August 13 session, making the 80-page document the official updated reference guide for city officials, volunteer groups, and others during an emergency scenario. The plan is subject to annual review and also regular “tabletop” exercises every year to make sure city officials, staff, and emergency services personnel are familiar with all procedures in the plan.

So we’re here if anyone has suggestions for activities.”
Clarence-Rockland Public Library’s Teen Club finished its first summer season and all had a fun time. “We had some great activities,” said Nan- cie Bolduc, library youth services coordinator. “We tried to come up with fun activities and something different for them to do.” Bolduc and others involved in organizing the first season of the Teen Club had 58 registrations when the program started at the beginning of summer, almost double their expectations. Prévoyez plus de temps, ce matin-là, pour discuter avec votre enfant. Demandez-lui comment il se sent et con- firmez-lui que le stress qu’il vit est tout à fait normal. Précisez-lui que, pour sa pre- mière journée, vous l’accompagnerez avec plaisir jusqu’à son local, s’il le souhaite. Comme chaque enfant est unique, il est ardu de déterminer précisément le niveau d’angoisse généré par un changement d’école, en cours d’année ou à la ren- trée. Il est cependant possible d’apaiser cette angoisse en posant des petits ges- tes simples et en lui glissant de beaux mots d’encouragement. L’objectif est de démontrer votre soutien. APRÈS Évidemment, un changement d’école nécessite un temps d’adaptation qui varie d’un enfant à l’autre. Une fois son intégra- tion effectuée, soyez à l’affût de ses réac- tions et offrez-lui tout simplement une oreille attentive. Si vous souhaitez obtenir de l’aide d’un professionnel, sachez que vous pouvez vous adresser au psycholo- gue de l’école.

Prenez soin d’identifier les endroits impor- tants, comme la salle de bain, les dif- férents locaux de cours, le gymnase, la cafétéria, son casier, etc. 2. Soyez compréhensif face au stress qu’il vit et offrez-lui votre écoute. Faites-lui même part de votre propre expérience; cela cal- mera sans aucun doute ses appréhen- sions.
4. Intégrez à l’avance, surtout pour une main inexpérimentée, l’art de manipu- ler un cadenas : cette pratique fastidieuse peut s’avérer fort utile! Voilà! Bien outillé comme vous l’êtes désormais, vous assurerez à votre enfant une transition tout en douceur vers le secondaire (et à vous-même, une tranquilli- té d’esprit qui n’a pas de prix!).

Walking to school, safe and sound!
Walking to and from school is an excellent way for your child to get their daily dose of exercise. But to ensure they arrive at their final destination safe and sound, it’s important they abide by certain safety rules at all times! Start by identifying the safest route and locate dan- ger zones — like railroads or busy streets — along the way. Make sure the route follows school-approved walkways and intersections with a crossing guard on duty. Once established, travel the planned route with your child a few times before school starts, emphasizing the following safety guidelines along the way: • Always walk on the sidewalk (or, in the absence of one, stick to the outside of the left lane, facing traffic). • Cross the street at supervised intersections. If you arrive at a pedestrian crossing that doesn’t have a
crossing guard on duty, always look to your left, then to your right, and then to your left again before moving forward. • Always adhere to the traffic signals and pedestrian lights. • Don’t stray from the approved route or dilly-dally along the way. • Never get into a stranger’s vehicle. If possible, encourage your child to always walk with a friend — provided, of course, that this friend also keeps safety in mind! Finally, prompt your child to leave early to avoid having to run (and risk get- ting hurt!) to make it to school on time. Does the thought of your child travelling alone make you ner- vous beyond belief? Don’t hesitate to accom- pany them or meet them after school until you both feel more comfortable with the situation.
Identify the safest route to school and try it out several times with your child before letting them undertake the journey alone.
