WHAT DON’T YOU BOARD A PLANE WITHOUT? - It’s always cold for me, so I need lit- tle socks or a blanket. Then hydrating cream, due to my dehydrated skin, and plenty of water. WHY DO YOU LIKE PLANES? - Travel excites me. The fact that we can be on dierent sides of the world in a relatively short period of time thrills me. I learnt to travel by plane very ear- ly on, as a young fashion model, ying from New York Fashion Week to fash- ion week events in Paris, Milan or To- kyo. Even back then I realised how im- portant planes are, they are like a best friend for someone who does this kind of work. WHICH DESTINATION HAS REMAINED FOREVER IN YOUR MEMORY? - Japan is one of my favourite destinations. That’s probably because I’ve done a lot of work with Japanese fashion houses, which regularly invited me to be the face of their brands. I’ve had the privilege of flying to Japan at least five times. I was fascinated at how much more technologically advanced than the rest of the world they are. That fusion of tradition and high technology is captivating. They are a hard-working and diligent people, which is why they have such a high standard of living.
ZAŠTO VOLITE AVIONE? – Uzbuđuju me putovanja.
NA PUTU / ON THE ROAD AVION KAO NAJBOLJI PRIJATELJ A PLANE IS LIKE A BEST FRIEND Tekst / Words: Ljiljana Perović Fotografije / Photography: Goran Srdanov JELENA IVANOVIĆ, MODEL ZAŠTO VOLITE BEOGRAD? WHY DO YOU LOVE BELGRADE? - Belgrade is a city that has a soul. Apart from that, it also has an excellent geographical position, at the centre of Europe, and from there one can easily reach all parts of the world. It was while doing modelling work that I realised how easy it is for me to travel both eastwards and westwards – much easier than it is for someone who lives in Australia or America. It’s my city and I love it very much.

One of Serbia’s most popular actors reveals why his cooperation with Air Serbia came about, how the lming of the campaign went, what he does aboard planes, but also how he feels when ying home to Belgrade from working in Russia Jedan od najpopularnijih glumaca otkriva zašto je došlo do saradnje sa Er Srbijom, kako je prošlo snimanje kampanja, šta radi u avionu i kako se oseća kada iz Rusije, u kojoj radi, leti kući u Beograd

Uvek mi je lepo kad uđem u avion koji leti kući It’s always nice for me to board a plane that will fly me home
Have you ever met someone during a flight who later became a friend or lover? - I encounter many friends, that’s most often the case. So, I meet people who I al- ready know. Of course, I also meet many other people. I haven’t made new close friends in that way, but I have made new acquaintances. Could you describe to us how you feel when boarding a flight bound for Belgrade after spending a long period abroad? - I’m happy every time when I return to Belgrade. It’s always nice for me to board a plane that will y me home, and particu- larly when I land in Belgrade, and dur- ing that journey from the airport I look around to see what’s changed. That’s be- cause, even though I y very often, some- times two or three months pass between trips, so I can notice things that happened in the meantime. I always have some nice feeling when returning home. What’s the most important factor for you when you travel by plane? - When there’s no room left in econ- omy class, so they transfer me to busi- ness class. How often are you personally a red, blue or white traveller? - If we’re talking about the state of my health during a ight, then I switch between all those colours. Joking aside, I’m somewhere between a white and a sil- ver guest. I often y without luggage be- cause I’m heading on a short trip, but I y in business class whenever I can. After this experience, which of your characters from the promo video will you think of the most on your next Air Serbia flight? - I rarely think of the characters I play. When I’m not working and not lming, I don’t think about my heroes. But I love it when I end up being surprised by what I’ve done. These three characters from the video are simultaneously me and not me, I couldn’t single out one of them in par- ticular.
P opular young actor Miloš Biković is the face of the new marketing campaign of Serbia’s national air- line. Under the slogan“Every jour- ney tailored to you”, he presented all the benets of personalised travel with Air Serbia to passengers. In a very appealing video, Biković simultaneously plays cate- gories of passenger ranging from white (travel without luggage), blue (with lug- gage) and red (exible reservation), pre- senting all the benets that guests receive depending on the selected ight tari. How did you find the film shoots for the Air Serbia promotional videos? - It was fun, quick, easy and dynamic; I really had a good time. And I think the result is also good. It’s actually the best when things combine to produce an ap- pealing and witty result, and when the lming process is fast and professional. Your character in the promo vid- eos is quite keen to chat with his fellow travellers. Are you like that when you travel, or are you one of those who listens to music or reads a book without disturbing others? - Not all of those characters I portrayed while playing this divided person are real- ly predisposed to chat. When it comes to me personally, that depends on how tired I am. Aboard the plane I prefer to switch o and, if I’m able, to sleep, because I of- ten travel between two shooting days or some other obligations. I carry a book and headphones, everything that helps me in that moment, because I spend a good part of my life aboard planes. Consider- ing how often I y with Air Serbia, espe- cially along the Belgrade-Moscow route, it was logical for me to either start paying rent, because I live aboard planes, or for Air Serbia to propose that we collaborate. As you know, this latter option happened.
– Srećem mnogo prijatelja, to je najčešće slučaj. Dakle, srećem ljude koje već znam. Naravno, upoznajem i mnoge druge.

WHAT’S CHOMSKY DOING IN ARTISTIC DANCE?

By interpreting the ideas of Noam Chomsky, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, one of the most intriguing contemporary choreographers and current artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, says that he realised that studying all available information is the only way an individual can protect themselves from political and social propaganda. His Fractus V work signies the natural fractures that are essential to growth and strengthening in contemporary society, and we’ll get the chance to see what that looks like at Belgrade’s Sava Centre on 22 nd March Prevodeći ideje Noama Čomskog, Sidi Larbi Šerkauji, jedan od najintrigantnijih savremenih koreografa i aktuelni direktor Kraljevskog flamanskog baleta, shvatio je, kako kaže, da je proučavanje svih dostupnih informacija jedini način da se pojedinac zaštiti od političke i društvene propagande.

T he 16 th edition of the Belgrade Dance Festival will be coloured by “Emotions”. Under that slogan, 16 ballet and contemporary dance companies from 11 countries, with 20 cho- reographic works and 25 solos and duets, will present themselves to the Belgrade public from 22 nd March to 12 th April. Among them will be one of the most intriguing contemporary choreographers and cur- rent artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Prior to the ocial start of the festival, his East- man troupe from Antwerp, the city where he was born, is set to perform Fractus V at Belgrade’s Sava Centre. Inspired by the writings of linguist and political philoso- pher Noam Chomsky, the piece deals with the way in which an individual can pro- tect themselves from political and social propaganda, while the author himself al- so appears on the stage. “This is not the rst time my works will have been performed at the Belgrade Dance Festival… I think that Geneva Ballet, Introdans, and Aakas Odedra brought some of my works in the past. And that was successful, as I heard. This is the rst time I will be part of this Festi- val, together with my Antwerp based troupe – Eastman. And I will be on stage, together with four dancers from very dierent geo- graphical origins and backgrounds, and an equally large group of musicians in a hybrid blend of Japanese drums, Korean sounds, Congolese voices and Indian sarode. I pre- sented a short creation In 2014 for the 40th anniversary of the Pina Bausch’s Wuppertal Tanztheater.” In Fractus V you address the fractures
between individuals and society, while the work is inspired by the writing of Noam Chomsky. How come Chomsky? - If I interpret Chomsky’s ideas for myself, I gain insight into the fact that the only way an individual is able to protect themselves against political and social propaganda is to study all the information available. Each day we are bombarded with news that attempts to inuence our thinking. Looking for prima- ry movements on the edge of tribal and folk- lore, this short performance raised the desire for more. In Fractus V, I want to deepen ques- tions of information and manipulation; prop- aganda versus a more‘objective’and factual approach. I also take, as a starting point,‘lib- erty of expression’. We have the information, but we don’t know how to use it. In this piece you pose a lot of questions that are dicult to answer... -The questions that I ask myself:‘It seems certain freedoms still need to be framed?’‘How neutral can our thinking be?’‘How much do we identify ourselves with the causes of the injustices in society?’‘Where does personal responsibility start or end?’Chomsky’s funda- mental appeal for‘freedom of speech’against political attempts to control and manipulate the media resonates with my need, as an art- ist, for a space to constantly reinvent my own identity. Evolution is the combined result of an endless series of minor and major revo- lutions. Every day is a rite of passage, a point of no return… With nine dierent national- ities and outspoken identities on stage, dia- logue will come to form an intense, dramat- ic and uent whole. Fractus V stands for the natural fractures that are necessary to grow and become stronger.

Your work is often described by critics as being the cliché of a multicultural melt- ing pot on stage. How would you yourself dene the essence of your work? - First of all, I think that for any artist in any eld it is never nice to be dened as anything. I dance because I don’t want to be dened. But of course people need you to explain yourself, to say who you are, where you come from and what you do. What I do is try to stay as close as possible to the things I care about, love and nd defensible; the things I want to stand for. This can be a mix of things from dierent cul- tures that are elements which matter to me and form part of who I am. When I worked with Fla- menco artist María Pagés, it was not the deni- tion of Flamenco that I cared about, it was the movement. So when people say “he is mixing cultures”, I say, “no, I am translating”. I’m trans- lating into the eld that is contemporary dance. You have worked with Buddhist monks, a Lebanese singer, a Corsican vocal group, while your piece TeZukA was inspired by Japanese manga... In your opinion, are there some elements that are genuine parts of the culture you were raised in, given that your mother is Flemish and your father is Moroccan? - I love the ow that you nd in Arabic writing, where the letters are connected and the words are intertwined. Being educated in reading from right to left has sometimes helped me to look at things from a dierent perspective. When I was a kid, we used to have verses from the Quran writ- ten in calligraphy above our doors. I loved the aesthetics of them. I think the part of me that is Arabic has been indoctrinated with a certain sense of beauty. But the idea of what I consider beautiful was also shaped by my mother, who is Catholic and used to take me to Antwerp Ca- thedral and show me the murals there. But there are simultaneously many things that my parents didn’t consider beautiful, but which I learned to appreciate. I think it is really important to ques- tion the things you consider ugly, because those are prejudices. You often claim to be a sketch artist rath- er than a choreographer? - My aesthetic, my sense of beauty, came from my childhood, which was a mixture of cal- ligraphy and Flemish painters, like the ones you see at Antwerp Cathedral, and Rubens. My main expression was drawing – and I really do feel that I’m much more a sketch artist than a choreogra- pher. When I make work, it is drawing and I don’t make a distinction. Even when I’m singing, I’m actually dancing – it’s like a choreography within the body – your mouth moves, your diaphragm, your palette – you have to have a sense of the technique of movement that generates sound, which is choreography, which is dance, so your actually dancing when you’re singing. And danc- ing for me is actually when I’m drawing a circle and sketching.
Mislim da je zaista važno
I think it’s really important to examine things that you nd ugly, because those are often prejudices ispitati stvari koje smatrate ružnim, jer su to često predrasude

TRAŽIM TOPLU DUŠU RAHMANJINOVA I SEARCH FOR RACHMANINOFF’S WARM SOUL

Od tada slavnog ruskog kompozitora prati kao zvezdu koju pokušava da dosegne Alexander Sinchuk (30), a pianist born in the Russian town of Nakhodka, was only 12 when he rst came across Sergei Rachmanino’s creations. T he Belgrade audience were able to conrm that’s succeed- ed in that endeavour at Kolarac Endowment Foundation in December, where he performed to commemorate the 145 th anniversary of Rachmanino’s birth. “I’ve always imagined him as a gentle aristocrat and great in- tellectual. He was very open, moved by the suering of others and a man with an openn heart. I see him as a member of the older ep- och, as a man of the 19 th century.” Rachmanino mostly lived in his native Russian Empire in the 20th century, until the October Revolution of 1917, after which he was forced into exile. He lived in Europe and America and witnessed the creative periods of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. “His contemporaries left a deep impression on the stylistics of Rahmanino’s music. Like every genius, he changed, nding some- thing close to him in the 20 th century and using that. But that main element, the reason millions of people around the planet love him, always remained unchanged in his music.” For Sinchuk, Rachmanino was rst and foremost a romanti- cist who addresses the hearts of listeners through his music and re- mains forever in them. “It’s increasingly dicult to be romantic today. I sometimes believe that the 19 th century would have been ideal for me. People were kinder and more sincere, they could talk to each other about things that are now only discussed between the closest loved ones.” Rachmanino’s works are on the repertoire for almost all of Sin- chuk’s solo performances around the world, so he knows lots of an- ecdotes that relate to him, but he always notes how much Sergei was loved and simultaneously unaware of his popularity. “In the year 1919, Rachmanino performed in a charity concert at the Metropolitan Opera. Also performing was renowned violinist Jascha Heifetz, and the audience sought an encore from him. The concert’s organisers arranged an auction. And as a result Heifetz’s encore was sold for several hundred thousand dollars. Then the or- ganisers auctioned Rahmanino’s Prelude in C-sharp minor as an en- core. Rahmanino was scared when he heard how much had been paid for Heifetz’s encore and was certain that his prelued wouldn’t
