2.0 FINDING YOUR FORTE: OUR APPROACH TO STRATEGIC ARTICULATION

Why is Finding Your Forte Important? All too often, organizations are drawn to business as usual and don’t take the opportunity to be strategic about performing in a way that plays to their strengths, leverages their passions and rewards them in ways that motivate them. Using purpose as a strategy drives engagement, visionary focus and impact.

Finding Your Forte is the first phase of our

approach to engage the purpose and impact of organizations. Doing so empowers them to bring an engaged and inspired presence to their people and organizations’ mission.

HOW WE ARTICULATE STRATEGIES

We approach strategic articulation beginning with a common sense of purpose. From there, we facilitate clarity of vision through snapshots on time horizons of Think Big (5+ years), Start Small (one year from now) and Scale Fast (about 3 years). With those visions snapshots as a guide and tapping into the power of visualization, we identify how we will measure progress, what we have to do differently and what strategic priorities are required. From their our critical initiatives give us the action items to execute and a well-informed foundation to deliver the business outcomes successfully.

2.1 NOTEWORTHY EXPERIENCES

Purpose is a powerful accelerator for articulating visions, outcomes and priorities in way that mobilizes stakeholders to the ‘why’ of their work. It also substantially enables building high performing boards and leadership excellence through clarity of work, vision and the change mandate. With focused intent, we work to harness that power to create engaging, personally vested and mission impactful facilitated engagements. We approach facilitation as an opportunity to create immersive experiences that embolden the purpose of the organization. We design experiences with intent and a focus on engagement. Below are highlights from recent engagements we’ve facilitated that illustrate these objectives in the facilitated experience we designed.

The experiences highlighted below are of Your Crescendo or Education First engagements on which the team we’ve proposed for redefinED’s engagement.

Strategic Plans with Non-Profit Boards

Annie E. Casey Foundation Atlanta Civic Site Vision 2020 Strategic Articulation

Currently developing the strategic articulation site for the Atlanta Civic Site that will set the stage for the foundation’s investment strategies in the City of Atlanta. Additionally, we provide leadership coaching for the Atlanta Civic Site Director through Finding Your Forte. Designed and facilitated a meeting with key stakeholders to support the development of a two-generation focused data strategy. The post- meeting deliverable included a strategic articulation map to visually depict delivery of efficient family-centered programs and services that are informed by a proficient approach to data collection, sharing and understanding. Developed a toolkit to help the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Family Centered Community Change sites develop a clear articulation of key outcomes (The Why) that align with the needs of children and the appropriate strategies and services (The How) required to achieve those outcomes.

Belk Foundation Strategic Planning The Belk Foundation Strategic Planning process: We engaged with a cross- section of stakeholders, including grantees, community/state leaders, and experts, conducted desk research and facilitated meetings with Board members to help the Foundation identify the problems to solve through their advocacy and grantmaking strategic plan.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation The Gates Foundation P-16 Landscape Scan and grantmaking process We conducted a landscape scan to define the characteristics of good P-16 efforts, identifying a set of communities with strong backbone organizations supporting good P-16 efforts, engaging with those communities to assess their readiness to receive and implement grant funding and supporting Gates’ grantmaking efforts within five communities.

National Black MBA Association Under the direction of the incoming CEO, we developed their strategic articulation map focused on their purpose through facilitated sessions with leadership. We continue to be engaged to lead and coordinate implementation of their strategic plan.

Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative We led Atlanta Wealth Building Institute’s board and leadership through a two- day retreat experience. As an organization, AWBI is focused on closing the black wealth gap in Atlanta through empowering entrepreneurship and systemically strengthening access to capital for black entrepreneurs. We designed and delivered this strategic planning experience to mobilize a strong, working board to empower their new executive director and set her up for success.

National Society of Black Engineers Currently leading the facilitation to guide NSBE student and staff leadership through a several month exercise to articulate its strategic path forward. As an organization, they are focused on movement building to continue to make black engineer a household name in homes and communities of color and beyond.

Transformation Alliance In an effort to create an immersive experience connected to their purpose related to equitable transit-oriented development, we had members take MARTA to our strategic planning session. We also featured only vendors in the community neighborhoods they served including

We were part of a team engaged to define the strategic articulation for Transformation Alliance focused on equitable transit-oriented development through mobilizing a group on non-profits and creating cohesive synergies to combat racial inequity in Atlanta with regards to transit and development.

Impact Church – Staff Retreat Vision Construction Once our strategic articulation was completed, we needed to build the implementation plan. Having led the implementation through consulting, we needed to transfer ownership of the plan to the client to continue without our support. To prepare them for this key transition, we created a vision construction experience in the space of one of the city’s most prominent commercial builder’s offices and provided construction hats and cold pack lunch pails (that they continued to use as a reminder of the experience).

City of Atlanta - Fulton County Land Bank Authority As an approach to level set new board members with old on how landbanks work, we had board members play an equity version of Monopoly with members having the opportunity to be the ‘land banker’.

Impact Church We led Impact Church on a several-month engagement to articulate its strategic plan in addition to its brand strategy and guidelines. This engagement created a leadership / staff roadmap tool in addition to a marketing and branding guideline. Staff and leaders always carry and reference their strategic articulation map in making key decisions and staying focused on what they’ve chosen to make priorities.

Bottom Line Bottom Line helps low-income and first- generation-to-college students get to and through college. We helped their development articulate its go-to-market strategy for fund development, pursue (and win) grant opportunities and develop a pitch deck.

K-12 education policy issues

Atlanta Public Schools While leading delivering of key district strategic initiatives in the midst of a cheating scandal, the leader and the strategic program and project delivery team found themselves working through abysmal morale. We facilitated a series of Finding Your Forte starting with the key leader and then her team. This energy carried over into the entire district when the new superintendent embraced StrengthsFinder as a strategic thrust to ‘Focus on What’s Strong instead of What’s Wrong’. This helped them navigate beyond the scandal, and now every teacher and staff knows their strength from StrengthsFinder and the use them in everyday education processes and support.

SLAM! Academy Atlanta In a high stakes team building and strategic plan development retreat, a soon-to-launch charter school had a contentious relationship between its board (mostly African-American) and the foundation/funders (mostly Latino) that provide the blueprint for the school. By starting with connecting their purpose to the school mission allowing them to more meaningfully get to know each other and then work together to plan the strategic articulation’s implementation.

Middle Tennessee State University Teacher Preparation Strategy We partnered with MTSU, the largest teacher preparation provider in the state, and Tennessee SCORE to develop a new approach to teacher preparation, using a collaborative approach to strategy development which includes deep and authentic engagement of the MTSU faculty, staff and community involvement in and affected by this important effort.

3.0 OUR TEAM

Your Crescendo is excited to propose our team powered by a special partnership with EducationFirst. Education First is a national, mission-driven strategy and policy organization with unique and deep expertise in education improvement. Their mission is to deliver exceptional ideas, experience-based solutions and results so all students – and particularly low-income students and students of color – are prepared for success in college, career and life. They work closely with policymakers, practitioners, funders and advocates to design and accelerate policies and plans that support strong systems, outstanding educators, engaged students and effective investments. This partnership is made possible through a decades long professional relationship between Reggie Hammond and Rashidah Lopez Morgan. Having been introduced when Reggie represented Accenture while recruiting at Spelman College, they became colleagues and mentor protege while there at Accenture. Since that time, Rashidah has completed Finding Your Forte’s purpose career program. She is now a Principal with Education First focused on her purpose “To prepare adults to positively impact the lives of children. I want to contribute and/or lead organizations that build the capacity of adults who are serving the needs of children.”

3.1 OUR PARTNER: EDUCATION FIRST

We are excited to bring compelling subject matter expertise to bare for redefinED through our partner Education First.

Education First’s Core Strengths Education First strives to improve public education by helping leaders innovate, think bigger and achieve more on behalf of students. Our work gives our clients—districts, funders, policymakers and nonprofits—greater knowledge and stronger skills to succeed. Our vision is that a child educated in America will be well-prepared for a world of constant change, learning and opportunity. Income and ethnicity will no longer determine the quality of education students receive. Our public education and postsecondary systems can—and will—prepare every student for success in college, careers and life. We strive to ensure that our engagements deliberately address issues of diversity. We do this by viewing the project work at every stage through a lens that gauges the impact of the work on students of different races, genders, ethnic backgrounds and abilities. We are practitioners first and foremost. We bring authentic, in-your-shoes expertise in the content, issues, politics and messiness of making real changes that yield real differences, from early education to K12 to higher education and workforce systems. Our team brings deep, practical expertise earned through on-the-ground experience as former teachers, district and state leaders, policy advisors and foundation staff. Because of our experience, we are humble about the challenges our clients face and realistic about the work needed to make a difference. We understand how to effectively design, implement and scale programs and models. Our team has the experience and knows the research required to implement programs with lasting impact. Sustainable implementation requires: conducting needs assessments; using the principles of both human- centered design and improvement science to plan and test ideas, refine and continuously improve implementation; co-designing detailed action plans to help the plan/program implementers execute the big ideas; and working hand-in-glove to implement the plans. We are skilled in the design and implementation of efforts that engage many stakeholders around a common vision for complex, high-impact change in the field. We have a strong track record of successfully establishing and managing large-scale change efforts that aim to shift policy and practice to better serve students, especially under-served students and students of color. We collaborate with clients to design appropriate structures, systems and processes that enable these efforts to bring stakeholders together and sustain their engagement over time. We design meaningful opportunities for organizations and individuals to collaborate through our expert facilitation, knowledge of effective partnerships and use of leading-edge adult learning design principles. Our clients benefit from coming together to share information and strategies. Meetings and convenings aren’t just a necessary evil in public education; when designed and facilitated well, our clients can use the time to step back from their day to day work, learn from others’ promising practices, collaborate to solve problems of practice and draft action plans to advance their work. We understand school districts and their needs. Our clients look to us because of our deep, practical expertise earned through our on the-ground experiences as former teachers, principals and district leaders. Many of our team members previously worked in school district central offices, including most of the team members proposed to work on this engagement. Because of this background and our work across the country, we understand the context and challenges facing school district leaders and are well-connected to district leaders in peer districts from whom we can learn.

We have a deep commitment to helping clients bring an equity lens to their work. We recognize that, in order to pursue our own organizational mission at Education First (“to deliver exceptional ideas, innovative solutions and real results to help ensure that every student educated in the United States, regardless of race or income, will be prepared for success in college, careers and life”), we must approach the work by studying gaps and inequities, asking tough questions about structural racism and more deliberately engaging diverse voices in problem-solving. We bring to this project a focus on and expertise in equitable project design. Our work is deeply influenced by the EquityByDesign framework developed by Dr. Christine Ortiz, which argues that because systems of inequity have been designed, they can be redesigned. We’ve been building our own skills to navigate these issues, with particular attention to equitable design methods, and we are committed to helping our clients do the same in projects that have a goal of increasing equity at their core. Finally, our national education experience is as broad as it is deep, and we understand how to pivot and adapt in response to the changing education landscape. As a national strategy and policy organization with unique and deep expertise in education improvement, we bring to our clients the experience of working with hundreds of school districts, teacher preparation programs, states, foundations and nonprofit partners. These organizations, like us, are committed to improving our nation’s public education systems in order to close race- and income-based gaps in opportunity and achievement. We select projects around the nation with which we can have the greatest impact on students, educators and education systems. We work at the neighborhood, city, state and national levels. We are not beholden to a partisan agenda other than doing what’s right for kids and the adults who serve them. We aim to support each of our clients through multiple engagements, because tackling tough problems requires more than a single shot. We invest in thought leadership so our impact extends beyond individual engagements. We measure impact and we hold ourselves accountable for delivering excellent support and results in every engagement. PROFESSIONAL PROFILE As an Analyst at Education First, Rebecca believes that for all children to have the excellent education they deserve, educators must have the knowledge, resources, and support to create rigorous and engaging classrooms. She uses her passion for policy

and data analysis to aid clients in building systems and structures that prepare and support educators to foster high-quality, student-centered learning environments. As a former middle school teacher in New Orleans, Rebecca saw the systemic barriers her students faced in accessing an education that would prepare them for high school and beyond. She has since dedicated her career to creating a more equitable education system with a focus on ensuring aspiring educators have the knowledge, experiences and resources they need to create rigorous learning environments. Rebecca is currently working with Middle Tennessee State University to re-design their teacher preparation program, which includes conducting interviews and focus groups with over 100 stakeholders as well as conducting data analysis and research to understand the program’s areas of growth. From this, a group of faculty and district representatives have gathered to use the findings to draft a strategic plan to reshape the teacher preparation program that meets the needs of stakeholders. Previously, in her role at the Carnegie Corporation, Rebecca worked with teacher preparation and development organizations to support their efforts to move standards from adoption to implementation. In this role she also helped bring together Deans of Education from across the country to learn from one another about their efforts to develop high-quality preparation programs, the challenges they face in the field and potential areas for future collaboration. She also worked for the New York City Department of Education in the Office of Academic Policy and Systems and served as a Fulbright Scholar in Thailand.
