For unknown reasons the bike collided with a farm tractor and ended up in a ditch. At the time of the collision, there was heavy rain, making the pavement wet. The road was blocked to traffic until 10 p.m., while a technical traffic collision investigator assisted with the investigation. A 57-year-old male driver, and a 52-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to hospital in Ottawa; they were both in critical condition.

Life for Robert Edgar

Although Edgar cooperated with police early on during the investigation, he initially told police his wife had fallen down a flight of stairs while carrying a heavy box of books. However, autopsy reports painted a different story. Edgar called 911 on the morning of January 25 stating that his wife needed help. When officers arrived on the seen, Sekora was unresponsive, lying on her back at the base of the staircase. Officers observed inconsistencies in Edgar’s story noticing bruising on Edgar’s arm that resembled a handprint, as well as scratches on Edgar’s face. On January 26, a post-mortemexamination was performed, which suggested injuries to be consistent with someone who had been smothered. The cause of death was recorded as obstruction of airway. Sekora’s daughter, Tereza Sernets, read a heartfelt impact statement to the court explaining how difficult the ordeal has been for her and her family. She stated that she did not like Edgar from the beginning and suggested that he had harmed her at the beginning of the relationship. “It is incredibly difficult to describe how I feel,” said Sernets. “I suffer incredible heart-tearing pain.” Sernets said she had spoken to her mother every day, and now suffers from lack of trust, inability to sleep, and denial. “I came here today to face the reality that my mother was murdered.” Son of the accused, Nicolas Edgar also read an impact statement describing how difficult his stepmother’s death has been for himand his family. “She was a stepmother, but she was really amother to me,” he said. “I lost two parents. The pain has been unbearable.” Edgar’s granddaughter also had an impact statement, which was read silently by

the judge. Crown attorney Martel and defense lawyer Robert Miller both gave their recommendations as to Edgar’s fate, agreeing that life with ineligibility for parole for 10 years would be appropriate. Martel asked to have a DNA profile for Edgar, as well as a lifetime ban on firearms. Miller asked the judge to consider allowing Edgar to serve his sentence at LaMacaza Institution inQuebec, stating his client felt he could rehabilitate better there. Miller also explained that Edgar would like the opportunity to teach his trade as machinist during his incarceration.

After a 15-minute recess to decide, judge Pelletier came back with a decision. As he explained the reasoning for his decision, Pelletier agreed with the recommendation of council, sentencing Edgar to life in prison, with ineligibility for parole for 10 years. Pelletier also agreed to the DNA profile as well as the ban on firearms, and stated he would not object to Edgar serving his sentence in a different province. “The horror and the shock the victim must have experienced when she realized it was her dying day,” said Pelletier. “The procedure will end today, but it is far from a completed task for family members. It is very clear that the impact will never go away.”

Tereza Sernets is relieved Robert Edgar received a life sentence for the murder of her mother Zdenka (Radja) Sekora.

The courtroom was sombre as the Honourable Judge Robert Pelletier read the sentence of life in prison for Robert Edgar in the murder of his wife Zdenka (Radja) Sekora in January. Family and friends of both, the victim and the accused, filled the courtroomonMay 14 to hear the second-degreemurder guilty plea and sentencing of 79-year-old Edgar. “Mr. Edgar will enter the prison systemas one of the oldest inmates,” stated Pelletier. Crown attorney JulianaMartel read the details of the January 25 murder to the court, stating Sekora had been smothered to death by her husband (Edgar) of 33 years.

Living with Lyme disease

hard to diagnose, or they can be severe and still hard to diagnose. Pawlus said several of his doctors thought he was just looking for attention and sent him away. They just didn’t know what was wrong with him. Suspecting he had Lyme disease, Pawlus took matters into his own hands and went to New York for testing. “You pay but you get service immediately,” said Pawlus. “They took blood and did tests. They came back positive. I had it.” In 2006, Pawlus began having severe symptoms that he could not explain. Although the disease usually shows up as a bull’s eye rash, if bitten in a discrete area the rashmay never be visible. Some reports state that the disease could be passed on through blood or sexual contact; however, those tests are inconclusive and not all reports are valid. “My personal opinion is that it is a syphilitic malaria,” Pawlus explained. “Once you have it in your body, that’s it. You have it forever.” Pawlus has done years of research into the disease, its effects, and how to combat them. “Now I am in the chronic stage of Lyme disease,” stated Pawlus, who has a number of symptoms due to the disease. “It’s like I have root rot. It’s almost like being a zombie.” Getting help Pawlus said he doesn’t want to see anyone else go through the harrowing experiences he has had with this disease, and the first thing people should do, if they suspect they have been infected, is get informed. Get the facts from a doctor or respected web site such as the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation, and talk to other people who have dealt with the disease. “If you’re not sure, get tested,” exclaimed Pawlus. “Some people think it will go away after awhile, and some symptoms might, but once it’s in your system, it’s always there.” Pawlus owns GAP Appraisers, Liquidators, and Auctioneers that has offices in Ontario and Quebec, and a warehouse in Hawkesbury. He now takes several different types of medications that do little more than mask the symptoms for a short time. “It doesn’t really help anymore,” he said. “I was a super healthy guy, living in Pine Hill, chopping wood, and in great shape. Now I feel like I am 80 years old. I’ll be 62 in November.” Pawlus would like to help those that are suffering from Lyme disease, or trying to get diagnoses. “Now that I know how this thing works, it’s very simple to get tested,” informed Pawlus. “The medical system tests for symptoms not causes. You have to insist on being tested for the disease. I am not professing to be a medical doctor, but I’ve been through it and I can help.” Avoiding getting bit by a tick is one way to combat the disease. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) suggests keeping grass cut short, using a tick repellant containing DEET, checking body for ticks after spending time outside, making sure pets wear a tick and flea collar, and checking themoften for ticks. The EOHU also suggests wearing light coloured clothing, long sleeves, and tucking pants into socks during outdoor activities. Detailed information on Lyme disease, including how to properly remove a tick, can be found on the EOHU website at www.eohu.ca, search Lyme disease, or the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation at www.canlyme.ca.

George Pawlus found out the hard way what is involved in contracting Lyme disease and getting the help needed to combat its effects.

DIANE HUNTER diane.hunter@eap.on.ca

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of a blacklegged, or deer, tick, which can be found throughout Ontario. Ticks are usually about the size of a sesame seed, and can get to be about the size of a grape when they are full of blood. Symptoms usually begin with a bull’s eye rash, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue. The symptoms can be vague and

For George Pawlus of Calumet, Lyme disease has become all too real with symptoms from severe arthritic pain, to vision and hearing problems and cognitive issues. Now he wants to help others avoid the same fate.

Join in for a grand tour of the cosmos. The adventure begins on Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m. at the Champlain Township Public Library in Vankleek Hill. From telescopes to the Big Bang and beyond, there is so much to see and learn about our vast universe. For the astronomy enthusiast, the passion for the heavens can last a lifetime. Young and old alike, the sky above will not disappoint. So, fasten your seat belts and discover a part of yourself and our connection with the stars. But beware, stargazing can be addicting. More information is available at 613-678-2218. Looking for something to do this summer? Join the Library Artist Trading Card (ATC) Club! An artist trading card is a tiny, original piece of art created with the idea of swapping or trading it with another artist, not selling it. The only rule is it must be 2.5 x 3.5” or 64 x 89 mm. The cards can be any style or medium, whatever is felt at the moment. Then, club members meet a few times over the summer. Cards can be created at the library or at home! The club is open to kids 12 + up, registration is required. The first meeting is Tuesday, May 26, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. More information is available at 613-678-2218. Court Street in the village of L’Orignal as part of a community yard sale where they will be selling donated items and talking to people about the playground project. “This is a great opportunity for our community to come together and show its support for the project,” said Jackie Chenier, Sacha’s mother. “We understand that not everyone can afford to make a financial contribution to the park, so donating a few things that they are no longer using is another way of helping.” Sacha’s Park is a playground that is being proposed for the new Place La Seigneurie development in L’Orignal. The playground, once built, will be different than a typical playground in that it will be universally accessible allowing children of all abilities to fully enjoy the park and its equipment. The goal for Sacha’s Park is to create a playground that is inclusive and where the equipment works for everyone, including children with disabilities. A playground where everyone can play. Used items in good condition are appreciated; however, furniture, TVs, large appliances, and mattresses cannot be accepted. Drop-off or pick-up arrangements can be organized through Jackie Chenier at 613-676-0517, or at sachaspark@gmail.com. More information about Sacha’s Park can be found on the online fundraising page gofundme.com/EveryoneCanPlay.

The Mom-to-Mom sale is back this weekend at the VankleekHill Community Centre but this time, themoms invade the rink to find hidden gems for the kids and family. A whole lot of toys, used and new, clothing for kids, crafts, arts, jewelry and beauty products, the centre will be packed with goodwill and good finds. More than 50 tables are already reserved by moms and local businesses and the sale will sure be a hit, two weeks before the Trash and Treasure Hunt in Vankleek Hill. The sale is Saturday, from 8:00 to 1:00 p.m.(SL)
