Le GASL déménagera à la bibliothèque
CORNWALL | The City is now accepting ap- plications for the Flood Risk Reduction Re- bate, anewprogramtoassist homeowners in flooding-affected areas. Through the program, eligible homeowners can re- ceive a rebate of up to $3,600 for comple- ting improvements such as eavestrough downspout disconnections, backwater valve installations, foundation drain dis- connections and lot grading. “The goal of the program is to reduce the risk of flooding caused by sewer back-ups and reduce the burden on the City’s sani- tary sewer network,” said John St. Marseille, General Manager, Infrastructure and Mu- nicipal Works.“We also want to have the op- portunity for residents to take part in a dia- logue with City staff about flooding causes and protection measures.” Residents who are interested in applying are asked to fill out an application form on- line at www.Cornwall.ca. Hard copies of the application form are also available for pick up at the Municipal Works office (1225 On- tario Street) during regular business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm), Monday to Friday. CORNWALL | Les dirigeants du centre de Généalogie et archives St-Laurent Inc. (GASL) n’ont plus à s’inquiéter. Le GASL a signé un bail avec la Ville de Cornwall et pourra réaménager ses archives au sous- sol de la Bibliothèque publique de la ville. On se souviendra que l’avenir du centre GASL était en péril puisque l’édifice qui hé- berge sa vaste collection, le 127, chemin Anthony, avait été mis en vente l’an dernier. Les membres du conseil d’administration GASL espéraient depuis longtemps pou- voir déménager les collections dans le sous-sol de la bibliothèque publique. «Ce serait bien plus facile pour nous tous, avait expliqué Mme White au Journal en avril dernier. Des employés de la bibliothèque pourraient aussi prendre soin de nos ar- chives.» Local real estate agent Brock Frost has submitted an offer to the Ligue nord-américaine de hockey (LNAH) in a bid to save the Cornwall River Kings. “I have made a conditional of- fer to the league,” said Frost. “Tech- nically, right now, there is no River Kings team in Cornwall.” According to Frost, negotiations are still under- way and he doesn’t know if the Kings will be back in Cornwall in time for September, but he remains hopeful. On May 23, the former owners of the club, David Small and Gokan Kara- kus, handed back the ownership of the team to the LNAH, stating that the lack of advertisement deals ulti- mately led to their downfall. Rebate applications now accepted
A City representative will be in contact to review the application and schedule a site visit to review the necessary lot-level plumbing corrections required. Upon com- pleting the appropriate upgrades, a final inspection will be scheduled. The City will issue a rebate upon confirmation of work completion. Upon request, the City will also provide a summary letter to the resident of upgrades undertaken. “We anticipate there will be a high level of interest, so we are ask- ing for residents to be patient while we roll out this new program,” said St. Marseille. Homeowners are advised that some up- grades under the Flood Risk Reduction Re- bate Program will require a building permit and inspection to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code. This process is administered by the Building Permits Office and is separate from the Flood Risk Reduc- tion Rebate Program. Homeowners who did not experience flooding in 2010 or 2013 can still apply for the rebate program, however, priority will be given to those that experienced flood- ing or are in flooding clusters. Subject to
the number and value of rebate requests received, other non-flooded residents may be considered as well. Based on the success of the program and further Council approval, the City intends to budget up to $1.5 million over the next three years for the rebate program in order to assist as many homeowners as possible. The new rebate program is part of the Cornwall Blueprint, a comprehensive plan to deal with issues such as basement flood- ing reduction and environmental, water and infrastructure awareness. It serves to address two key pillars of the City of Corn- wall’s Strategic Plan; Quality of Life and Ef- ficient Services. Over 500 students from the St. Law- rence College in Cornwall graduated on June 6. CORNWALL | Everyday, more than 2000 children go missing in North America. According to Operation Kidsafe founder, Mark Bott, 80% of those abductions are from individuals they are familiar with. Bott, along with over 20 children, was present at the Cornwall Honda dealership on June 4 tomark the official launch of the program, which will serve the Cornwall community for a one-year mandate. Elaine MacDonald, acting mayor, was also at the event representing the mayor who, despite prior engagements, managed to make an appearance to the delight of the children, who asked to be photographed with him. “I’m really happy that Mr. Bott brought this program to Cornwall,”said MacDonald. “The children in our community will be safer.” The program is present throughout Canada, the United States as well as Puerto Rico. “It’s totally free, it’s totally private,” said Bott. The service offers a bio-document, which offers parents safety tips, as well as their

8th annual Clean Air Day

Cornwall Transit’s eighth annual Clean Air Day promotion was a huge success, with thousands of residents taking advantage of the day-long offer of free rides, on June 4. The City-run transit service recorded 6,472 passenger boardings throughout the day, making it the most successful Clean Air Day event yet. “We are thrilled with the response,”said transit divisionmanager LenTapp.“Passengers have been contacting our office to express their appreciation for the free rides and great service.” Pictured is Len Tapp, transit passenger Andrew Davies and Mayor Bob Kilger. Davies was one of several riders who received a prize throughout the day from ‘mystery riders’ aboard the buses.

Relay for Life invades Maxville

Prior to the event, McEwen had already raised a whopping $150,000 for the cause. In all, over 100 teams had been formed and all included an average of ten members. Several of these said teams spawned from across the region such as the Caped Cure-Saders, who came from Vankleek Hill, as well as The Tornados, coming from Saint-Albert. The Boobielicious came from Saint-Isidore and rallied around one of their members, Louise Berner-Levac. Berner-Le- vac, a breast cancer survivor, made sure to

From all throughout Prescott-Russell and SD&G, thousands flocked to the Maxville fairgrounds for the annual Relay for Life. As fate would have it, sunshine was part of the great event as well, filling the cloudless sky with its rays. Before even beginning the Relay, $100,000 had already been garnered. “We don’t know exactly how much has been amassed so far, because we still have to organize the Relay for Life in Ingleside,” said Sylvie Guénette, of the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society , following a

emprunte toutes les règles du sport nation- al canadien, mais avec quelques change- ments évidents, dont l’adoption d’un masque subaquatique, une paire d’ailettes et un petit bâton de hockey. La rondelle est pondérée et on doit la faire pénétrer dans un petit filet. Pour Mackenzie Quesnel, ancienne mem- bre des Cornwall Sea Lions , le hockey sub- aquatique présente une belle occasion de représenter son pays. «Je peux jouer toutes les positions, a-t-elle expliqué, en défense, en attaque et même au centre.» Bien qu’elle soit devenue membre du club de hockey subaquatique il n’y a à peine que huit mois, celle-ci a été sélectionnée pour prendre part à un camp d’été d’entraînement avec l’entraîneur de l’équipe National U19 , Pierre Larose. Mackenzie démontrera son talent lorsqu’elle jouera avec l’équipe de Gatineau. Lors du prochain championnat provincial, la jeune élève représentera l’Ontario. L’équipe de hockey subaquatique de Cornwall a été fondée en 1969 et compte 31 membres. Quatre d’entre eux ont déjà représenté le Canada lors de championnats. L’Assemblée générale annuelle (AGA) de l’Association j’écris ma vie , s’est dérou- lée le 24 mai à l’hôtel Ramada Inn de Cornwall, une première puisque l’AGA est toujours tenue au Québec. Quelque 80 membres et non-membres ont participé. J’écris ma vie est un programme d’aide à l’écriture destiné aux personnes intéres- sées à écrire l’histoire de leur vie. Ce programme est offert sous forme d’ateliers et s’échelonne sur deux ans, à raison d’une rencontre aux deux semaines. Plusieurs ateliers d’écriture sont en cours dans la région d’Ottawa, d’Embrun et de Cornwall. La présidente de l’association, Francine Lanteigne, a partagé sa joie de tenir pour une première fois une assemblée générale en Ontario. Le député fédéral Guy Lau- zon était aussi de la partie. Celui-ci a souligné l’importance d’écrire et de garder son français autant en Ontario qu’au Québec. Après le repas, Bernadette Clément, avocate à l’Aide juridique et conseillère municipale, a présenté les attraits de la Ville de Cornwall. Elle a aussi souligné l’importance et sa vision de la femme en politique. Chaque personne présente a reçu un sac rempli de renseignements sur la ville. Tous sont repartis satisfaits et emballés de leur journée. Every child and teen is different and everyone develops at their own rate. As a parent, do not expect more or less of your child or teen than what they are physically and intellectually capable of. When you set realistic expectations for your children, it allows them to experience success and feel important. Expecting too much all the time, whether it’s to always be polite, tidy, or happy and cooperative, is unrealistic. When expectations are too high you are only setting yourself up for disappointment. One way the Triple P: Positive Parenting Program ® suggests making sure your expectations are realistic is by checking the basic facts of where your child’s or teen’s development should be at. But do recognize that no child is the same and everyone develops at slightly different rates. Be sure to adjust your expectations based on your child’s or teen’s needs. Always remember to go easy on yourself too! You are human. You will make mistakes. Do not get upset with yourself. Everyone learns through experience and asking questions. Plus de 200 jeunes de Cornwall ont eu la chance de s’amuser tout en profitant du so- leil le 7 juin dernier lors de la 25 e édition de la Foire des petits francos. Organisée par le Centre de ressources familiales de l’Estrie, celle-ci se tenait à l’École élémentaire catholique Marie-Tanguay et comportait plusieurs activités. Plusieurs organismes communautaires ont aussi prêté main-forte aux activités dont le Centre culturel de Cornwall, le Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie, le Club Octogone, le Club Optimiste, le Club Richelieu, Partir d’un bon pas, l’équipe psychosociale ainsi que le Centre de la petite enfance. Conventions to bring 10,000 people to Cornwall

They have truly become a part of our community.” During the months of June through Au- gust, Jehovah’s Witnesses will present 55 convention programs in 25 locations across the country. This year’s convention theme is Keep Seeking First God’s Kingdom, based on Jesus words at Mathew 6:33. Many con- ventions will host international delegates and missionaries from around the globe. A convention highlight is always the two the- atrical productions that bring a Bible story and a modern-day drama to life. The public is invited to attend any ses- sion or the entire program at the Cornwall Civic Complex. There is no admission fee as the Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses are supported entirely by voluntary donations. Lynn Hess, one of the local convention coordinators, said programs at the conven- tions will feature important information for families. “All of us are deeply affected by the events of our time, and we do need guid- ance.”

CORNWALL | Thousands of Jehovah’s Wit- nesses will start converging in Cornwall on June 13 for the first of three Watch Tower conventions being held at the Cornwall Civic Complex in the Ed Lumley Arena. Altogether, more than 10,000 delegates will be attending the three conventions, pumping in excess of $4 million dollars in economic benefits into the community. CORNWALL | Le Centre Charles- Émiles Claude (CCEC) aurait les reins solides selon les états financiers présentés le 4 juin dernier lors de l’assemblée générale annuelle. Selon Paul Desnoyers, comptable du CCEC et représentant de la firme Craig Keen Despatie Markell (CKMD), le centre aurait un surplus de 23 970$ pour l’année 2014. Ces travaux font partie de l’initiative de réduction des inondations du plan d’urbanisme de Cornwall et comprend la construction d’égouts dans le quartier d’Eleventh/Grand/Miron, ainsi que le long de la rue Marlborough, de la rue Second à la rue Eleventh, et le long de l’avenue Old Orchard, de la rue Marlborough à l’avenue Baldwin. Le nouveau poste de pompage sera construit du côté nord de la rue Eleventh au niveau de la rue Marlborough. Les travaux devraient être achevés en 2014 et 2015 à un coût estimé de 5 000 000 $. Playhouse delivers laughs again this year
The crowd filled Playhouse echoed with laughter on June 7, as talented actors por- trayed Dave Freeman’s play, A Bedfull of Foreigners . The season opener follows the misadventures of Stanley (played by JamieWilliams) and Brenda (played by Alison Lawrence) as they take the last room available in a run-down hotel, only to find they have to share it with total strangers. A Bedfull of Foreigners serves up plenty of laughter, complete with a host of madcap characters and a set that has a quirky personality all of its own. When Brenda leaves to retrieve a lost ring, Stanley is left to deal with a series of events and bizarre characters that leave him literally running about in circles: getting trapped in a closet; lowering a strange lady out a window; being chased by an angry man with a lavatory chain; dealing with a scheming, inept hotel porter and a womanizing, incompetent manager; being se- duced by a burlesque dancer; and all the time horrified by the knowledge that his troubles have just begun. It is alleged that on May 26, the man was spotted by a member of the Cornwall Community Police Service in the company of someone known to have a criminal record. Nancy Hutt, 38, of Cornwall, was arrested on May 31 and charged with breaching two probation orders for having consumed alcohol and failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on May 31, police attended a Cumberland Street address in relation to a disturbance call. Once on scene, they located the intoxicated woman and took her into custody. A 19-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on June 3 and charged with breach of recog- nizance for being out past curfew. It is alleged that on June 3, police attended the area of the 200 block of Water Street for a suspicious call. Once in the area, police located the man. Warrant, personation Dakota Garlow, 28, of Cornwall, was arrested on May 30 on the strength of a warrant and also charged with personation. It is alleged that on May 6, the man failed to attend court for a theft under $5000 and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Sexual assault A 24-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on May 31 and charged with sexual assault. It is alleged that on May 31, the man sexually assaulted a 27-year-old woman. A 38-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on June 1 and charged with sexual assault. It is alleged that on June 1, the man sexually assaulted a 27-year-old woman. Criminal harassment A 42-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on May 31 and charged with criminal harass- ment. It is alleged that the man contacted his 42-year-old ex-wife by way of text messages and by way of attending her place of work despite having been told by her to stop com- municating with her. Warrant, breach A 22-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on May 31 on the strength of a warrant and charged with breaching her undertaking for communicating with someone that she has conditions not to, and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on May 31, during a traffic stop, the woman was found to be in the company of a person that she was on conditions not to communicate with. Assault, breach, mischief, overcome resistance A 48-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on May 31 and charged with assault, mischief, overcoming resistance and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on May 31, during an argument, the man pushed his 28-year-old girlfriend to the ground and applied pressure to her throat with his hands. The man then damaged the phone in the room when she attempted to call out. Robbery, mischief, assault A 40-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on May 31 and charged with robbery, mischief and assault. It is alleged that on May 31, during an argument, the man forced his 25-year- old girlfriend’s cell phone away from her and threw it against the wall. He then tried to pry the recovered cell phone from his girlfriend’s possession. Assault A 21-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on June 2 and charged with assault. It is alleged that on June 2, during an argument with his 17-year-old girlfriend, the man grabbed her by her arms, bit her then pushed her. A 27-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on June 2 and charged with assault. It is alleged that on June 2, during an argument with his 21-year-old girlfriend, the man punched her in the back. Theft under $5000 An 18-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on June 3 and charged with theft under $5000. It is alleged that sometime in the month of May, 2014, the man removed a WII FIT console from his foster parents’ house. Assault, breach A 23-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on June 3 and charged with assault and three counts of breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and communicating with some- one that he has conditions not to communicate with. It is alleged that in the early morning
hours of June 3, during an argument with his 22-year-old girlfriend, the man punched her on the head and shoulder. Warrant, fail to attend An 18-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on June 4 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged that the woman failed to attend court on May 27 for an assault charge, and a war- rant was issued for her arrest. Assault, assault with a weapon A 50-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, both from Cornwall, were arrested on June 5. It is alleged that on June 5, due to an argument, the couple engaged in a struggle result- ing in the man being cut on his finger by a knife. Warrant Lisa Sauve, 26 of Cornwall was arrested on June 5 on the strength of a warrant. It is al- leged that on June 2 the woman failed to attend court for a theft under charged and a warrant was issued for her arrest. Theft under $5000, breach Douglas Anderson, 30 of Cornwall was arrested on June 5 and charged with theft under $5000 and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on May 11, the man was responsible for removing property that did not belong to him from an Amelia Street yard. Mischief A 16-year-old Cornwall youth was arrested on June 5 and charged with mischief. It is al- leged that on June 5 during an argument with his mother the youth damaged dining room chairs and punctured holes in the walls.

DIRECTIONS: Set out a 23 cm (9 inch) springform pan. Combine graham cracker crumbs, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl. Stir in butter. Press the mixture on bottom and about three-fourths up sides of the spring- form pan. Chill crust while prepar- ing the filling. Drain cottage cheese (reserving the cream), press through a coarse sieve and set aside. Measure reserved cream and fill to 250 ml (1 cup) with heavy cream. Beat eggs until very thick. Add sugar, beat- ing until light and fluffy. Blend in the sieved cottage cheese, the cream and flour, orange juice concentrate, vanilla extract and salt. Turn filling into crumb-lined pan. Bake at 175 ºC (350 ºF) oven for 1 hr and 10 to 20 min. While cake is baking, prepare topping. Combine sour cream, con- fectioners’ sugar and blueberries in a small bowl. When cake is ready, turn off heat. Open oven door and gently spread cake with topping mixture. Cool in oven until cake is at room temperature. Chill.
