GSR wants to be a senior friendly municipality
residence with a clinic available for communitymembers. “There is a senior’s residence in Arundel/Weir with a clinic and a nurse practitioner. It keeps people from going into a residence far from the community and family,” explained Abbey. “And people don’t have to go all the way to the hospital for minor treatment. They can go to the clinic. That would be ideal for this community.” Daniel Gauthier, council member for elders and family for Grenville-sur-la- Rouge, was on hand to answer questions, and to offer support. “We try to bringmore services to the community.” Gauthier explained that a residence with a clinic is one of the projects currently being discussed for the area. Other topics discussed were road conditions, access to services, and community events. Some residents prefer to travel to Hawkesbury to go to the hospital because it is closer, and service is available in English. Lapointe reminded residents about the CLSC in Grenville, which offers services for tests, flu shots, diabetes, new mothers, immunization, psychologists, and social workers in both official languages. Lapointe said the next step is to compile the results of several surveys and create an active plan for the next three years. The MRCwill bemeeting with local residence in the fall to discuss the plan.

La Municipalité régionale de comté d’Argenteuil (MRC) is working hard to ensure senior friendlymunicipalities. A meeting at the Avoca community center on May 22 shed some light on what’s working, what needs improving, and what still needs to be done. Catherine Lapointe from the MRC led an informative meeting explaining findings from a recent survey taken for the community of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge. Lapointe asked if residents were happy with community services, and what could be done to improve. Services available, transportation, communication, and safety were some of the topics discussed. “We’re meeting to see what can be done for seniors and families, and to get the results of a survey that was taken in the fall,” said Shirley Young, one of the community center’s committeemembers. “I’d like to see a senior’s home in the area. Seniors have tomove into town to go into a residence. It’s very traumatic for them. They are used to living in the country where they know everyone, and they are surrounded by nature. Then all of a sudden they are in a town, where nothing is familiar.” Art Abbey suggested opening a

Fire on Nelson Street
Noisy cars, please be quiet! The arrival of warmer weather brings muscle cars and noisy cars on the roads. The Hawkesbury OPP Detachment has received many complaints regarding vehicles that emit noise levels that do not conform to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. This problem contributes negatively on the quality of life for a majority of citizens. This summer, officers will be on the lookout for vehicles that infringe the law. Those found in contravention of section 75 of the HTA may be subjected to a fine totalling $110.00 and will be required to make adjustments to their vehicles in order to meet the provincial standards. Hawkesbury Budget Approved The Hawkesbury municipal council approved the 2015 budget on May 25, during the regular council meeting. The budget was discussed on May 13 with a final report mentioning a budget of $19,937,630, a decrease of $1,372,033 compared to last year. Several elements come into play for reducing expenditures, including the elimination of Director-General position and discontinuing the contributions to Pioneer Place, which generate a $214,681 savings. A decrease of more than $260,000 in expenses for the OPP contract also reduces the bill. The fire service salary expenditures remain high at $725,000, compared to approximately $675,000 last year. A balanced budget also means a drop of more than a million dollars in revenue for the city. The city is opting for caution in business development, budgeting a decline of more than $800,000 in building permits. The rate for restructuring ice time at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex, as well as the absence of a second ice for a second season could also lead to decreased income of $50,000, nearly $17,000 from minor hockey. A small decrease in municipal taxes will mean a small savings in taxes. According to the city, the average resident paid $1,792.07 in taxes in 2014. The new rate will create a savings of $36. – Diane Hunter No ecoLarose project means savings for Hawkesbury The United Counties of Prescott-Russell voted May 13, during its committee meeting, to cancel the proposed conference and environmental interpretation centre project and redirect the UCPR’s investment in the project to help member municipalities with their own budget needs. This means that investments made by local municipalities for the project will be returned. Hawkesbury will be receiving $402,400, which mayor Jeanne Charlebois said the council will need to confer to decide what to do with it. “We will take time to talk about it,” said Charlebois. “Most likely the money will be used to purchase a new municipal vehicle, or go towards the skate park. We will know more once the council has had a chance to talk about it.” While both the federal and provincial government expressed support for the project through the MP and MPP offices, there were no corresponding signs of financial backing. – Diane Hunter
A fire onNelson Street broke out around 9:30 on themorning of May 22. Five fire trucks from Hawkesbury and L’Orignal were dispatched to the blaze where 25 firefighters managed to get the fire under control. One firefighter was sent to hospital withminor injuries, but was released soon after. Fire chief Ghislain Pigeon said the cause of the fire is not yet determined. Pierre Dubois from the Hawkesbury OPP said there is no police investigation. Police were dispatched to the scene to assist with traffic.

The battle began when Alain Simoneau, a Saguenay resident, initiated the case with a complaint against themayor and council- lors’ prayer in public at the council meetings. The case continued on to the Supreme Court of Canada where a ruling stated that elec- ted officials do not have the right to recite prayers at municipal council meetings.
The Hawkesbury municipal council mee- ting began as usual this week, with a 30 second prayer, now being called reflec- tion, following the April 15 ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada against prayer at the municipal sessions. Councilor Joanne Portelance, along with other council members and Hawkesbury mayor Jeanne Charlebois, took half aminute to reflect, before beginning the council mee- ting, onMay 25. “Our prayer does not include the word God,” said Portelance. “It is really a reflection. We can still do the sign of the cross and say amen. I am religious, and I’m going to continue to do the sign of the cross.” After an eight-year battle that began in

Light up the bat signal!
On June 9, the first anniversary of Sacha Chenier’s death, the internet is going to be lit up with the bat signal, inmemory of a little boy who loved Batman. Sacha Chenier lived in L’Orignal with his parents, Jason and Jacquelyn, and his older brother Sebastien. He was severely affected by cerebral palsy due to lack of oxygen at birth, and required the use of a wheelchair for most of his life. His birth injury also left himblind, epileptic, and with severe cognitive delays. He attended school in Hawkesbury at the école Paul VI. Sacha passed away suddenly at the tender age of 11, on June 9, 2014, due to epilepsy related complications. On June 6, Sacha had gone to CHEO for a medical appointment. When leaving the hospital, they happened to come across Batman patrolling the parking lot. “There was no way we could leave without saying hello to Sacha’s favourite super hero,” said Jason. “So, we waved him down and took a quick photo. After taking the photo we went home and didn’t think much more about the chance meeting.” Only a few days later, on June 9, Sacha passed away without warning. “As we looked through our photos in preparation for the funeral during the days that followed, we got goose bumps when we came across the last photo of Sacha on my cell phone,” said Jason. “Looking back, it seems only fitting that Sacha’s very last photo was one of him laughing with Batman.” The Chenier family is asking the community to remember Sacha on June 9 by lighting up the Internet with the bat signal, andmaking it their Facebook profile picture, as well as change their status to #LightTheBatSignal in memory of Sacha. Twitter users are asked to tweet the photo along with the text. “It would be a nice way of remembering our little Batman,” said Jason. “And to bring some awareness to the inclusive playground project he inspired.” The project is Sacha’s Park , which is a playground where no one will have to sit on the sidelines because of a disability. e Vankleek Hill Music Festival presents its 16 th Annual Music & Arts Summer Camp. e camp will take place at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute in Vankleek Hill, July 6 to 17, Monday to Friday, from8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Kids from the ages of 6 to 14 are welcome to take part in the crazymusical mayhem of drums, art, choir, drama, harp, guitar and recorder along with a variety of fun workshops. No previous musical knowledge is required. All instruments, except recorders, are provided. Instructors includeWilliamLaurin, Larry Larouche, Kathy Collins, CynthiaMartin, IanHepburn, Christos Bereris and Réjean Lafrance. Instructors work with campers to produce “Joust! AMightyMedieval Musical”, written by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson who wrote “Pirates! e Musical”, which was successfully

Dès le 30 juin prochain, les Chevaliers de Colomb de Sainte-Anne-de-Prescott n’existeront plus. Le 21 mai dernier, 92 % des membres ont voté en faveur de la fer- meture du conseil. Le désintérêt des jeunes et le vieillisse- ment des membres actuels ont fait en sorte que les Chevaliers de Colomb de Sainte- Anne-de-Prescott n’ont pas eu d’autres choix que de s’interroger sur la viabilité de leur conseil. Lemanque criant de nouveauxmembres est en grande partie le problème. « On n’a pas assez de membres. On doit en avoir au moins deux ou trois par année et, dans les derniers quatre ans, il y a juste eu deux nouveaux membres qui se sont inscrits et ils n’étaient même pas d’ici, mais de Hawkesbury et de Montréal. Ils ne sont même pas de notre communauté », a indiqué le grand Chevalier, Yves Descoeurs. « Et les personnes âgées qui font du bénévolat et qui s’impliquent depuis des années com- mencent à être épuisées. » Depuis mars dernier, plusieurs activi- tés ont été annulées puisque le nombre de membres actifs n’était pas susant pour aider l’organisation. Côté nancier, le conseil n’avait que très peu d’argent à remettre à la communauté une fois les frais des diérentes activités payés. Par exemple, lors de la dernière soi- rée canadienne, uniquement un montant de 14 $ avait été récolté, une fois tous les frais acquittés. « Ce n’est plus lamême chose. C’était très bien au début. Par exemple, on avait fait une collecte de fonds pour l’hôpital et on avait amassé près de 1500 $ et on est un petit village. Mais maintenant, il y a d’autres orga- nismes qui en font. Et puis les gens venaient pour faire la fête, mais il n’y a plus de fêtes, » de dire M. Descoeurs. Le conseil attend présentement les der- nières factures de New Haven et Hamilton (sièges sociaux du mouvement au niveau international et national), avant de fermer dénitivement, le 30 juin prochain. Les membres toujours intéressés pour- ront être transférés dans les autres conseils des municipalités avoisinantes. Le conseil des Chevaliers de Colomb de Sainte-Anne-de-Prescott a été créé en 2001 et allait fêter son quinzième anniversaire en septembre.

The Hawkesbury municipal council presented Inspector Bryan MacKillop with an award of recognition for four years of service to public security at the Hawkesbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). MacKillop will be stepping down as detachment commander in June, and moving on to the Development Bureau of the OPP in Orillia. “We are all excited for you,” saidHawkesbury mayor Jeanne Charlebois, as she presented MacKillop with the award. “Thank you for your service, and your courage.”

But for artist Nik Schnell, Philippa’s husband, the garden serves a grander purpose, one with an artistic flair that breaks cultural and artistic barriers. “My wife put a lot of efforts to start the show two years ago and this is all about mental health and the taboos and stigma that are attached to it”, said the artist. “Unfor- tunately, my wife had been struggling with mental illness for 25 years and the pain was so great.The garden is dedicated to her and it’s a way to showcase three-dimensional art and be a community event and place, where
artists, who are bursting with creativity, have the chance to be out there.” The garden exhibit started in 2013 as a cha- rity event to raise awa- reness and funds for the CMHA. The collection is eclectic, from Peter MacElwain’s Homage to Kant self-balancing metal sculpture to Hea- ther Meyers’ floating fish and Nik Schnell’s intriguing Red Ridng Hood mannequin with a no-lie reflection visage. Just like the path to happiness, art is always a little bit elusive and hard to grasp. Last April, local artist Philippa Lesniak died by suicide, but her art and will to help are still vibrant through her collection of work and friends. Skelly Gallery in St-Eugène is dedicating its garden to her for its annual sculpture show, where Philippa liked to relax and find her own path. On May 24, many gathered at the gar- den for the vernissage which marked the opening of the garden art trail. Until Octo- ber 31, visitors can experience the peaceful settings of the garden and find art pieces from17 different artists, including Philippa

(…) This is all about the community and that’s what I call community glue.” The May 24 vernissage helped raise over $400 for the CMHA and all the artists and friends pitched in.The garden is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Skelly Gallery is already inviting artists to submit their work for the 2016 edition.
