2023 GPU Class Catalog

Since 2005, Michigan State University has welcomed young Spartans, ages 8-13, and their grandparents to campus for a unique inter-generational learning experience at Grandparents University. This three-day campus experience is a truly unique, fun-filled experience that actively engages kids in Michigan State academics while creating lasting family memories. Each year, 1,300 guests from throughout the United States and around the world choose from nearly 200 classes offered by more than 25 colleges and units at MSU. Students participate in four classes and unique evening programming, with ample time allocated for exploring all that the MSU campus has to offer.

SESSION 1: TUESDAY, JUNE 27 [100] All About Insects with the MSU Bug House 20 Participants Join MSU Bug House guides for an interactive Bug House tour! Learn about the biology of insects and other arthropods, handle live beetles and cockroaches and participate in an insect-themed craft activity (may include live insects). [101] Are You the Next Olympic Athlete? Measuring Movement in Health and Disease 14 Participants Explore technology that is used to analyze human movement and how it can assess motor skills both in health and disease.

[107] Composting With Worms 20 Participants

Who will compost? Worms will! Learn how to compost food waste generated at home using the power of worms. Participants of this class will have the opportunity to build and take home a bin containing live worms! [108] Harry Potter and the Secrets of British English 50 Participants Harry Potter is a young wizard whose adventures have been enjoyed by people across the globe. But Harry was brought to life by a British author and his world is full of prefects, sticky toffee puddings and getting sorted into school houses. Learn about some of Harry’s culture and vocabulary, and the reasons why American English and British English have become different over time. [109] Disney Trivia 20 Participants In this fun Jeopardy style trivia game, play games like “name that tune” with family teams. [110] Static Electricity with WKAR’s Curious Crew 50 Participants Staticize balloons and Van de Graff fun! Even build an electroscope to explore a “shocking” lesson on static electricity with WKAR’s Curious Crew. [111] Geocaching in the MSU Horticulture Gardens 25 Participants Learn the basics of the popular worldwide hobby of geocaching while touring the beautiful MSU Horticulture Gardens. You will learn what geocaching is all about and how to operate a basic GPS unit. Basic loaner Garmin GPS units will be provided. Please note this class requires a lot of walking and is designed for those who have never geocached before. We will be outside rain or shine (unless there is lightning). Bring rain gear, water and bug spray and wear comfortable walking shoes!

[102] Balloon Twisting 20 Participants

Learn a skill that you can have for a lifetime — twisting balloon animals. Balloons are made of latex, so this session is not recommended if you are allergic to latex. [103] Black Education: 10 Things You Thought You Knew...(But Probably Didn’t) 100 Participants Explore the contributions Black people have made to public education in the U.S. This session will focus on the historical and contemporary implications of desegregation noting the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. [105] Calming and Quieting: Tools to Stay Cool When Things Get Hot 20 Participants Your days get busy and can get stressful if you have too much to do. Wouldn’t it be great to know some ways to be calm when you get overwhelmed? In this class we will talk about ways to relax and focus in the moment. We will find examples from nature to help you build new ways of decreasing stress. We will also make calming jars for you to take home. This class is open to ages 10-13 and particularly relevant to boys and girls who are in sports.

Join us for hands-on chemistry fun! In this course, we will be working as real scientists to understand how the world works. Be prepared to get a little messy as we experiment with chromatography and diffusion art, sugar rainbow, superabsorbent polymers and more! [114] Having Fun with the Business Model Canvas 20 Participants Learn how to use the Business Model Canvas, tool used to bring to a business to life. Explore how businesses operate with a fun and relatable business case.

Learn basic weaving techniques and make your own simple basket out of reed (both plain and dyed).

How does Velcro work? Are all cell phone screens the same? Why does cat hair stick to everything? Use optical and scanning electron microscopes to answer these questions and many more.

Explore the world of archery with the opportunity for novice and advanced shooters to shoot both recurve and compound archery equipment. The class will include primarily spot target shooting indoors, however, we have the facility to shoot outdoors and allow participants to try out state-of- the-art video archery system (TechnoHunt 400). [116] Intro to Theatrical Costumes and Construction 16 Participants Explore what it takes to make theatrical costumes. This class will be very “hands-on.” Learn a few basic sewing skills and come away with a small tote bag that you sew yourself. [117] Journal Making with the Writing Center @ MSU 15 Participants Create your own creative journal to write your story in! During the class sessions, participants will be provided with a journal of their choice and decorating materials (i.e. markers, stickers, scrapbooking material, scissors, glue, etc.) to construct their journal. The Writing Center will also provide various prompts to include in the journals to think, reflect and write about.

Guess an animal based off of a special adaption it’s made to thrive inside the environment that it lives in. After the guessing, there will be a brief discussion regarding the animal in question so participants can learn even more about the amazing adaptations around us. [123] Physical Therapy 101: Spartans Will Move 40 Participants Discover how physical therapists help people improve their ability to move, perform daily activities, recover from injury and live a healthy, active lifestyle. Get up and get active! Learn and perform treatments commonly used in physical therapy for a variety of medical conditions. [124] Physics is Fun 100 Participants Come and see interesting and exciting physics demonstrations about the most important physical laws governing our world. [125] Pickleball 24 Participants Learn the basics of pickleball in an active, fun atmosphere. [126] Pizza Making Seminar 10 Participants Learning how to make pizza from scratch and using different technics, sauce and toppings.

Learn about laser cutting and how to make a keychain design in a vector graphics program. Customize your keychain and watch your design cut on the laser cutter.

[134] Theatre Games and Improvisation 40 Participants Explore a fast-paced, fun and interactive experience using a series of theatre games often used by actors and improv companies. No experience necessary, just a sense of adventure and willingness to have fun! Participants should dress comfortably.

Use your imagination to envision what’s not yet but can be, and take the initiative to make it happen. We will use a Play-Makers playbook to share stories about our own ideas and learn about other Play- Makers from around the world. We will also enjoy making a collaborative art piece together. [128] Science of Star Wars 140 Participants Learn about the science of different types of planets, spaceships and more inspired by Star Wars. We will also have a chat about engineering while making light sabers. [129] Sparty On! Photo Editing With Free Online Tools 30 Participants Learn how to use web-based apps to edit, retouch and combine images. We’ll create a Spartan-themed collage and talk about careers that use these types of tools. [130] STEM Building Tours 20 Participants Enjoy a 30-minute walking tour of the STEM Teaching and Learning facility. What once was the power plant for the University, now encompasses state-of-the-art technologies and spaces for STEM education and collaboration.

[135] Time Travel — from MAC to MSU 20 Participants

Rewind the clock! See the past — in the present. Enjoy an enlightening stroll around the beautiful historic area of campus. We’ll take a walking tour through the history of the ever-changing campus and see how student life has changed from the 1800s. We’ll travel through time from the oldest point on campus to one of the newest – and imagine the future beyond!

[136] Tour de Campus by Bike! 15 Participants

Explore MSU’s beautiful campus by bike. We’ll see all the newer bike-friendly facilities that have been installed in the past decade or so that you might not know about. [137] Tour of Lasch Family Golf Center — Home to MSU Golf 50 Participants Tour the home of the MSU men’s and women’s golf teams. The Lasch Family Golf Center is one of the most acclaimed facilities in collegiate golf. [138] Traveling Technology Free 25 Participants Have you ever wondered how people traveled without GPS? Do you think you could find your way around using just a map? In this class you will learn how to read an Atlas, reach destinations using maps, use tools to plan a road trip and receive take-home material to use on your next adventure. [139] Veterinary Nursing — A Bandaging Lab 30 Participants Work through a case where a veterinary patient experiences a broken leg. We will discuss findings and patient care from the veterinary nurses perspective. We’ll bandage the legs of stuffed puppies demonstrating the bandage techniques required by surgery.

[131] The Hidden Maze 10 Participants

In an escape room format, students will explore disability, impacts of disability and common barriers in society, and engage with an experience of what it means to navigate our society with a disability.

[133] The Spirit in the Stick 12 Participants

Lacrosse is one of the most popular sports in the U.S., but did you know it’s the national summer sport of Canada? Learn about the history of the creator’s game and practice lacrosse basics! Arm and throwing skills can be taught to wheelchair participants with upper body mobility, but will be held on grass surfaces. Boys and girls under the age of 12 preferred. Not suitable for advanced athletes. Please bring your own stick.

SESSION 2: WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 28 [200] A Smashing Time With Nuclei at FRIB 24 Participants See inside MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, a world-leading nuclear research laboratory. Get hands-on with a model “nucleus” to learn how and why we smash nuclei at half the speed of light, then tour the lab and find out what exciting discoveries await the new linear accelerator! [141] We Are All African (and a little bit Neanderthal) 10 Participants Learn basic concepts of genetics and evolution and apply them to create a phylogenetic tree. We’ll interpret the results gleaned from peer-reviewed publications on human evolution.

Attendees will learn tips for family tree research, including how to conduct family interviews and record multi-generational family traditions and memories.

Learn about what it takes to be an archaeologist alongside the MSU Campus Archaeology program’s archaeology staff and faculty.

See how MSU repurposes wood from trees that are removed from campus. Leave with ideas for tree care in your community! [240] Veterinary Nursing — A Bandaging Lab 30 Participants Work through a case where a veterinary patient experiences a broken leg. [241] Virtual Bargaining as Workers and Managers 10 Participants Experience how workers and managers bargain in a small virtual labor market. [242] What’s Lurking in the Water? We’ll handle live river critters and mammal furs and learn how to fillet a fish.

Then we’ll also explore words, wordplay and important features of language. All children who attend will receive a free copy of the book. [249] Korean Language and Culture Jam 20 Participants Join us on a language and culture experience through the country of South Korea. Learn important Korean phrases, fun games, crafts and information about a popular Korean dish you can easily make at home!

[302] Animal Disease Detectives 50 Participants

Animals can’t tell you when they’re sick or point to where it hurts. Learn how veterinarians and laboratory technologists help to diagnose disease and protect both animal and human health. Participants will investigate and diagnose cases on their own. This is a two-hour class.

[312] Digging for Money: Ancient Greek Coins and Archaeology 14 Participants Get a little messy as you dig for coins from Ancient Greece! After you find them, you will then solve the mystery of what’s on them, where they came from and even their connections to Greek mythology. We spend our whole lives on the move: running, walking, skipping, trotting...you name it! While these concepts are familiar and innate to us, it can come as a surprise that we could actually be moving BETTER! Good Form focuses on the simple, essential steps that allow for efficient and healthy running and walking.

In “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” readers learn what life is like for Greg Heffley. Did you know that historians use diary entries as a way of learning about what life was like many years ago? In this session, you’ll get a chance to “time travel” by asking a kid from many years ago some questions about their life, and by making your own audio diary that kids many years in the future might someday listen to!

Explore the world of archery with the opportunity for novice and advanced shooters to shoot both recurve and compound archery equipment. The class will include primarily spot target shooting indoors, however, we have the facility to shoot outdoors and allow participants to try out state-of- the-art video archery system (TechnoHunt 400).

[317] Intro to Theatrical Costumes and Construction 16 Participants Explore what it takes to make theatrical costumes. This class will be very “hands-on.” Learn a few basic sewing skills and come away with a small tote bag that you sew yourself. [318] Journal Making with the Writing Center @ MSU 15 Participants Create your own creative journal to write your story in! During the class sessions, participants will be provided with a journal of their choice and decorating materials (i.e. markers, stickers, scrapbooking material, scissors, glue, etc.) to construct their journal. The Writing Center will also provide various prompts to include in the journals to think, reflect and write about. [319] Learning to Love Writing and Words 50 Participants View onscreen the steps in making the award- winning children’s book, “Mr. Mouthful Learns His Lesson.” We’ll review the choices a writer must make — and the book itself. Then we’ll also explore words, wordplay and important features of language. All children who attend will receive a free copy of the book.

Guess an animal based off of a special adaption it’s made to thrive inside the environment that it lives in. After the guessing, there will be a brief discussion regarding the animal in question so participants can learn even more about the amazing adaptations around us.

Basic kicking and punching techniques set the scene for discussing a variety of anatomical topics, including the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems. Join MSU Extension staff as you explore the world of finances and increase your money smart knowledge through fun, hands-on activities. [331] Sparty On! Photo Editing with Free Online Tools 30 Participants Learn how to use web-based apps to edit, retouch and combine images. We’ll create a Spartan-themed collage and talk about careers that use these types of tools. [332] STEM Building Tours 20 Participants Enjoy a 30-minute walking tour of the STEM Teaching and Learning facility. What once was the power plant for the University, now encompasses state-of-the-art technologies and spaces for STEM education and collaboration.

Lacrosse is one of the most popular sports in the U.S., but did you know it’s the national summer sport of Canada? Come learn about the history of the Creator’s Game and practice lacrosse basics! Not suitable for advanced athletes. Please bring your own stick.

Explore MSU’s beautiful campus by bike. We’ll see all the newer bike-friendly facilities that have been installed in the past decade or so that you might not know about. In this class you will learn how to read an Atlas, reach destinations using maps, use tools to plan a road trip and receive take-home material to use on your next adventure. [341] Virtual Bargaining as Workers and Managers 10 Participants We will experience how workers and managers bargain in a small virtual labor market. [342] Science of Star wars 140 Participants Learn about the science of different types of planets, spaceships and more inspired by Star Wars. We will also have a chat about engineering while making light sabers.

In an escape room format, students will explore disability, impacts of disability and common barriers in society, and engage with an experience of what it means to navigate our society with a disability. [335] The Historical Student Experience at MSU 16 Participants Explore life at Michigan State University through historical photographs and documents. Use your history detective skills to discover what students did for fun, the rules they were expected to follow and what it was like to live in the dormitories. Join the university archivists, who care for over 165 years of MSU history, for this interactive class.

[343] What’s Lurking in the Water? Exploring the Red Cedar River 30 Participants Learn about water in a river by observing the animals that live in the Red Cedar River. We’ll handle live river critters and mammal furs and learn how to fillet a fish.

[350] Instrument Explorers 20 Participants Do you know how to make a sound on the saxophone? Why does the bassoon have many keys but the trumpet only has a few? Are your arms long enough to play the trombone? Find out as we explore woodwind, brass and percussion instruments in this hands-on workshop. [351] Biomass (plant material) to Biofuel 15 Participants Next-Generation! Learn how to make biofuel out of soybeans. Biofuel is produced from plants as well as microbes. In this class we will discuss converting biomass to bioenergy. We will learn how to make biofuel from soybeans and also have a debate on “food vs. fuel.”

Join us to repurpose some of the wood! [408] Crafting Around The World 20 Participants Discover cultures and crafts as we create crafts. [409] Creating, Prototyping and Innovating 30 Participants Prototyping is a user-experience design practice where quick sketches, drawings and “wireframes” are developed for an idea, app or product. In this session, we’ll talk about why designers prototype and more importantly, we’ll do some brainstorming and prototyping together to create a new, interactive app: an ice-cream finder! [403] Beef Cattle Awesomeness: A Crash Course in Modern Beef Production 24 Participants Get an insider’s look at the MSU Beef Center cow/ calf and feedlot units, while learning about the management of a modern beef cattle operation. Learn why beef cattle farmers need to be concerned with forage production, growth and development, genetics, breeding, nutrition, health, beef quality and so much more. See why cows are so cool — and why modern beef cattle production is both an art and a science. Walking required. [414] Geocaching in the MSU Horticulture Gardens 25 Participants Learn the basics of the popular worldwide hobby of geocaching while touring the beautiful MSU Horticulture Gardens. You will learn what geocaching is all about and how to operate a basic GPS unit. Basic loaner Garmin GPS units will be provided. Please note this class requires a lot of walking and is designed for those who have never geocached before. We will be outside rain or shine (unless there is lightning). Bring rain gear, water and bug spray and wear comfortable walking shoes!

See interesting and exciting physics demonstrations about the most important physical laws governing our world. [428] Spartan Nursing 101: Simulation, Stethoscopes and Syringe Water Fights! 30 Participants Experience being a Spartan Nurse in the simulation lab and learn how to take vital signs, listen to lung sounds and insert a NG tube. Race against participants in a scavenger hunt of the lab, meeting some of our skills task trainers including Trach Jake, Surgical Sally, Chester Chest and of course, our favorite “patient,” HAL — a simulation manikin that breathes, blinks and even talks as you provide nursing care! Learn fast, or you might be the most unfortunate victim of the syringe water fight! These are just a few of the activities you may experience while working as a spartan nurse-in-training in an environment that looks and feels like a hospital! [429] Sparty On! Join us to meet MSU scientists researching how we can use the superpowers of microbes to transform grass into gas. Interactive and hands-on activities will allow you to uncover for yourself some of the mysteries that remain to be solved as we create a more sustainable future. [435] Veterinary Nursing — A Bandaging Lab 30 Participants Work through a case where a veterinary patient experiences a broken leg. We will discuss findings and patient care from the veterinary nurses perspective. We’ll bandage the legs of stuffed puppies demonstrating the bandage techniques required by surgery.
