Alternative Heat Ltd welcomed 350 staff members and their families to the Banbridge-firm’s Family Fun Day in August. A fantastic day of food, games and entertainment was organised by the company’s Social Committee and generously supported by its local suppliers. PLUMBMASTER CONTINUES LOCAL CHARITY WORK Thanks to the efforts of the Bangor branch manager John “Tiny” Weatherill, Plumbmaster was able to hand over a donation of £3,100 to Inspire Wellbeing (Addiction NI). Tiny made it his mission to walk the distance of Land’s End to John O’Groats, and despite Covid-19 preventing him from carrying out the 864 miles across the land itself, he mostly did so via his treadmill at home. Tiny confessed, “It became a labour of love over three months but on reflection I’m so glad I did it. The last 24 hours was very tough but with Lee-Maria and Damian’s help I got over the line.” Now, Plumbmaster look to their newest fundraising project for their charity partners with the Last Man Standing competition for this year’s Premier League season. T he general feeling among APHCI members at the moment is one of confusion and bemusement. On the one hand we are advised that we should get rid of our fossil
sun to satisfy our needs and more, but we are still some way from harnessing enough of this energy. The transition to a carbon neutral
decline into the future and as we can no longer rely on the Interconnector pipework in the Irish sea, we may become reliant on imports via shipments of LNG (fracked?) from the USA. SECURITY OF SUPPLY There are very strong indications that there are large untapped gas reserves off both our south and west coasts close to existing infrastructure. Surely exploiting these resources is the best way forward in the current climate, as it will provide us with the necessary security of supply and maybe a surplus to export as well as assisting our balance of payments and independence. It will also eliminate the huge energy inputs and resultant emissions incurred with LNG in liquidizing, loading, shipping, unloading and vaporizing for use. A large portion of rural Ireland is

dependent on oil for heating. Many of these buildings will never be suitable for heat pump technology even with a deep retrofit. The latest version of HVO (vegetable oil) can be used in these systems with minor modification in less than a day, with little cost and will reduce emissions by in excess of 90%. This oil is now available in Ireland albeit in small but increasing quantities. Surely an avenue well worth pursuing. IT’S ELECTRIFYING The electricity situation in Ireland would be laughable if not so serious. Would it not make sense to upgrade the generation and power transmission network to cater for the projected requirements for at least the next 10 years before pushing everyone down the electrification road on one hand and warning of potential power shortages and power cuts on the other. Happily, an ever-increasing volume of our electricity
is coming from renewable sources, but on present projections, large volumes of fossil fuels will be required to make up the shortfall for many years to come. Does atomic energy have a role to play in our future energy needs? Is the use of natural gas etc. at the point of use, rather than a generating station, a more efficient interim use of energy? Members report that there is a genuine concern and awareness of these issues among their customers. Firstly, they are worried about energy costs in the current climate, but they also want to do what they can to reduce emissions but in reality, they lack the resources for major expenditure. As one of the main construction trades centrally involved in this critical challenge The Climate Action Plan, green energy and the efficient use of scarce resources are top of the agenda at the APHCI, but we need a clear practical and attainable road map.

GRANT ENGINEERING RATIONALISE VORTEX RANGE FROM 63 MODELS DOWN TO 22 TO SIMPLIFY SELECTION FOR INSTALLERS AND HOMEOWNERS… Grant streamlines its award-winning Vortex range
S ince its launch 20 years ago, the Grant Vortex condensing boiler range has been available to those in the heating trade in a diverse range of sixty-three models with outputs from 12 – 70kw. The Grant Vortex and Euroflame oil fired boilers have now been streamlined, with many existing models rationalised to simplify the selection for installers and homeowners alike. Grant made the decision to rationalise the boiler models from sixty-three models
down to twenty-two - a change which makes it much easier for customers, installers, and merchants in selecting, installing, and stocking products from the oil boiler range. For example, the Grant Vortex range featured the Grant Vortex Indoor 46- 58kW boiler and the Grant Vortex Indoor 58-70kW boiler – these have now been rationalised to the Grant Vortex Indoor 46-70kW, however, the range of heating outputs of the boilers remain the same.
The Grant Euroflame oil boiler range which featured nine boilers across the utility, module and boiler house ranges has been rationalised down to six boilers – two models for each range. All Grant combi boilers remain the same with no change coming into effect for these boilers. However, the Vortex wall hung and Vortex blue flame range are no longer being manufactured and will not be available to installers.

In addition to the rationalisation of the Grant Vortex range, the heating technology manufacturer has also announced a new look for its popular Grant Vortex external model range. The Grant Vortex external model is one of the company’s most popular condensing oil boilers. The outdoor boiler is free standing and has been designed for situations where internal space is at a premium. This outdoor range of boilers features an award- winning unique Grant Vortex heat exchanger and has some of the highest efficiencies available in the market today. Since its launch, the external model has been finished in a galvanised casing, however, the range will now see the current casing be updated to a new grey powder coated finish. The new goose grey colour gives the Vortex external model range a distinctive, aesthetically pleasing, modernised look, which is expected to garner a lot of interest from those in the heating trade. This change will affect the four boiler models within the Vortex external range which feature outputs of 15kW to 70kW. All new Grant condensing boilers are future-proofed to use HVO through making a slight modification to the boiler. GRUNDFOS ADVISES ON HOW TO IDENTIFY AND SOLVE NOISY HEATING SYSTEMS… Solving noise in the heating system due to the incorrect amount of pressure in the system or because all valves are closed and deposits building up in the pump, or impurities in the pump or on the radiator valve cones. The good news is, there are solutions and ways to make your customers happy. H eating system noise is a common and frustrating issue for installers and homeowners alike. There are multiple potential sources of noise. Hydronic systems easily transport the sound and vibrations, and it can be difficult to identify the source.

IDENTIFYING AND SOLVING HEATING SYSTEM NOISE There are a few main causes of noise in heating systems. These can include issues like incorrect commissioning caused by the system often operating at a higher flow than needed; lack of balancing or incorrect commissioning of the entire heating system; and incorrect dimensioning of system components – such as pipes that are not sufficiently dimensioned for the required flow – can create friction-noise in pipes and valves. Other common reasons include air in the system which might result in hammering noises from pipes and valves; resonance noise due to the pump running at a specific speed generating a frequency that amplifies the noise; cavitation noise
HOW TO QUIETEN NOISY HEATING SYSTEMS You need to design the system,
dimension and commission the heating system correctly. But how? One solution is to select the right circulator that can be set in the correct control mode or automatically adapted to the system. You can use the circulator to balance the heating system and remove uneven flow and pressure, which will minimise the risk of noise. Grundfos ALPHA2 and ALPHA3 will help you do this. All Grundfos circulators are tested in its dedicated sound laboratory. As well as being tested for noise levels according to the ISO 3745 directive, they’re also tested for how they are perceived when installed in a boiler and the entire heating
system. But no matter how well-tested Grundfos pumps are, it’s impossible to fully replicate the diversity of the real- world installation. Therefore, you play a crucial role in ensuring your customers enjoy a more comfortable, well-heated home too. Together you can make better heating systems.

Specialising in the extrusion of polyethylene (PE) pipes, the company offers products for the heating and plumbing, water pressure, electricity cable ducting, gas, and agricultural sectors, and has expanded its product lines with the acquisition of Cork Plastics in 2021. “Cork
P&H: What were the main reasons for the acquisition? GH: Cork Plastic’s product ranges were very complementary to Pipelife Irelands existing product ranges, with the additional advantage of providing a very solid sales presence in underground sewage and above-ground soil products. The Cork Plastics range of roofline products was also of particular interest to Pipelife’s parent company, Wienerberger, with its bricks, façade, and roof tiles business. P&H: What does Pipeline Ireland aim to achieve with the business takeover? GH: The main objectives are to expand Pipelife’s footprint in both Ireland and the UK by consolidating with an established successful business, while simultaneously expanding our product offering into new categories, thus enhancing Pipelife’s overall appeal to its existing customer base that is broadly similar to Cork Plastics’. With a significant investment now underway to future-proof the

Actually, Pipelife Ireland and Cork Plastics business now make the Irish operation the second biggest manufacturing operation in the group. P&H: What was the investment made by Pipelife? GH: An initial capital investment of €30m has already commenced to expand and upgrade the existing Cork Plastics site. By 2026 there will be 35 state-of-the-art extrusion lines incorporating the latest automation technologies, with a planned output approaching 45,000 tonnes per annum. P&H: Has Pipeline Ireland faced any challenges since the acquisition? GH: A very tight labour market is greatly hindering the ability to fill the positions created by the expansion of the business. The additional pressures arising from increasing raw material, energy, and transport costs are being felt across the board, and within the plastic pipes market, the shortage of raw material has also impacted significantly this year. P&H: What will be the main services offered through this buy-over? GH: Our primary goal is to be a provider of industry-leading products and
services to the building sector. Pipelife recognises that modern systems require fully designed specifications that our customers can have confidence in. As such, we are investing heavily in in-house design services, particularly, but by no means exclusively in the heating sector. We will provide custom-designed systems to the building, with full-design indemnity insurance and full-life after-sales support services. GH: Developers, builders, and homeowners are faced with ever- increasing upfront costs in new builds as regulatory changes and the move to low temperature, low-emission heating systems impact building design and heating systems. In these situations, scale brings efficiency, so the greatly enhanced scale of the new Pipelife Ireland operations following the Cork Plastics acquisition will allow us to invest and
provide competitively priced class- leading design services and products. The inclusion of the Cork Plastics product portfolio allows for a much more detailed design and specification service to be offered on a whole-house basis. P&H: How will the acquisition further strengthen Pipelife’s position in Ireland as a strong platform for future growth? GH: The significant investment in new equipment, personnel, and services is without parallel in our sector in the country and will position our Irish operations as a world-class manufacturing facility for many years to come. MyLife Golf Day drives home over £5k for charity
M yLife Bathrooms colleagues and customers raised £5,751 during their annual Charity Golf Day on Friday, August 19 – an incredible amount that will be matched by the company and donated between their four chosen charity partners: Diabetes UK, Life & Time Care, Stroke Association NI and PIPS Hope & Support. Selected specifically by MyLife employees, all four charity partners hold a special place in their hearts. Diabetes UK are leading the fight against the growing health crisis, sharing knowledge, and tackling diabetes together. Life & Time Care is a palliative charity that delivers end of life care to those locally to MyLife. Stroke Association NI provides specialist help and support to people affected by stroke in Northern Ireland and PIPS Hope & Support is a local advocate in Newry & Mourne helping to reduce and prevent suicide, self- harm and emotional distress.
Now in its second year, the event was held at Warrenpoint Golf Course, where 26 teams gathered for 18 holes of healthy golfing competition, and in typical Irish style, were treated to a mix of sunshine and showers throughout the day. With prizes up for grabs for the winner of Closest to Pin and Longest Drive, the golfing fun culminated in a well-earned dinner and prize giving ceremony. Prizes, including Executive Tickets for Liverpool v Leicester on NYE at Anfield, were kindly donated by MyLife staff and wider community. Commenting on the event, MyLife Managing Director Andrew O’Brien said, “It was a great day, enjoyed by all and most importantly a fantastic amount raised for our charities. The Building Services Research and Information Association ‘BSRIA’ regularly update the Industry Standards for the treatment of water in Closed Heating and Cooling Systems. The latest release of the BSRIA Standards (BG 29/2020 & BG50/2021) highlight the need to maintain the system water to an exceptionally high standard of cleanliness resulting in retaining the high efficiencies produced by the boilers and chillers. BSRIA’s latest Standards show a clear shift in traditional water treatment and filtration. Previously, for example when sludge, dirt and system debris blocked pipework and radiators etc, this has a clear impact on the efficiencies. The common remedy for these issues was to install an in-line magnetic filter to remove these foreign objects. Not anymore. OUT WITH THE OLD… BSRIA’s latest target for dirt particle removal has been reduced to 0.5micron (1/2000th mm). Magnetite has an average particle size of 8micron, which is too small to be captured by conventional filter technology, which is currently in-line magnet filtration. Indeed, BSRIA confirm, magnetic filtration isn’t the preferred choice for commercial systems anymore and should be confined to domestic systems only.

…AND IN WITH THE NEW The latest BSRIA BG 29/2020 – Section 2.3.8 – Side-stream filtration / separation; States, “Side-stream filtration is suitable for most systems and strongly recommended for systems over 2,500 litres.” Belfast born MD of BSP, Richard Cowley explains, “It is critical the internals of a heating system remain clean and open to allow un-suffocated flow around the pipework.
