Ireland has ranked 13th in the latest Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index (RECAI) published by EY. The biannual index examines the world’s top 40 markets on the attractiveness of their renewable energy investment and Ireland ranks 13th in Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index

deployment opportunities. The country has maintained a strong position in the rankings. Stephen Prendiville,

Head of Sustainability at EY Ireland, commented: “The index reflects our robust market for onshore wind, and continued growth prospects for offshore wind and solar projects. When adjusted for GDP, Ireland climbs the rankings to 6th place, reflecting that we are very attractive for renewable energy development for the scale of our marketplace.” According to Anthony Rourke, EY Ireland Government and Infrastructure Advisory Director, more regulatory support is necessary to drive uptake of renewable energy sources: “To reach net zero, the integration of renewables must improve. Distributed energy resources have a vital role in allowing a range of green energy sources to be integrated into the grid. Additionally, investment in smart grids will be key.”

Project maximising renewable energy use wins award

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has presented the 2022 ICE Northern Ireland Sustainability Award to the Ballykelly Wastewater Treatment Works Upgrade. The winning project cleverly combines state-of-the-art mechanical wastewater treatment processes with the zero-energy concepts of an Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) to deliver a high-quality discharge. Designed by NI Water, in collaboration with BSG Civil Engineering and RPS Consulting Engineers, the sustainable solution includes battery storage to maximise the use of onsite renewable energy throughout the year. At 2021 prices, the energy stored onsite will save NI Water £400,000 over 25 years. In addition, the use of renewable energy will prevent the emission of over 41,000kg of CO 2 per year – helping NI Water achieve its carbon-neutral goal by 2050. The project provides a robust long-term solution for Ballykelly village. It also supports local development and offers an area rich in biodiversity the chance to enhance the local land and water environments.

LIGHTING ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND

LAI Chair Gearóid McKenna.

Gay Byrne, President at EiFi. Electrial Industries Federation Ireland.

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL 2022, THE LIGHTING ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND ESTABLISHES ITSELF AS A PROACTIVE ORGANISATION AND STRONG LOBBYIST TO PROMOTE THE AMBITIONS OF IRISH AND EU SUSTAINABILITY LEGISLATION… LAI to continue championing sector

T he Lighting Association of Ireland (LAI) had a very successful 2022 and looks forward with confidence, notwithstanding the unpredictable impact of world events, to an equally successful year in 2023. The incredible pace of lighting technology developments continues unabated and, while it brings many advantages and opportunities, the challenge lies in ensuring that lighting specifiers, designers and contractors understand and keep abreast of these developments. Similarly, EU legislation and regulation affecting the lighting sector are also developing at a rapid rate. Here again, the challenge lies not just in the content, but in its interpretation and application. Hence the importance of LAI has never been greater. Now fully recognised as the representative voice for the industry, LAI

has championed the interests of lighting on many fronts. Apart from regular liaison and cooperation with other professional representative bodies in construction, LAI also engages with Government bodies and regulatory authorities such as the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). Indeed, the association had a major LAI Pavilion at the SEAI Energy Show 2022, and the intention is to do something similar at the 2023 event in March. LAI also has a very strong education programme. Education and training are now more important than ever due to the skills shortage on the one hand and the need for CPD points and continuous professional development on the other. The fact that the lighting design DIALux Academy courses last Spring were booked out reflects not just the demand,

but also the value of this programme. Details of the next course, scheduled for the first quarter of 2023, will be announced shortly. Further strengthening the dissemination of vital lighting-related information, LAI has unveiled a new logo and a redesigned website. It is freely accessible and contains a vast reservoir of critical information on industry news, design guidance, project profiles, regulation updates and PDF-format articles from leading industry experts. “As the foregoing illustrates, LAI is not just a reactionary body but a proactive organisation and strong lobbyist at both national and international level,” commented LAI Chairman Gearóid McKenna. “Through our very active membership of LightingEurope we

contribute to, and influence, EU legislation affecting lighting. We

have delegates on many important LightingEurope committees, while Gabriel Byrne, an LAI founding member, is now on the Executive Board of LightingEurope. “For 2023 and beyond, we look forward to championing the interests of the lighting industry on all fronts, and to promote and strengthen its position within the framework and ambitions of Irish and EU sustainability legislation.” World of light The Lighting Association of Ireland are a representative group of people who have

an interest in the design, manufacture, distribution, and installation of lighting in Ireland. The LAI welcomes all those who are interested in any aspect of the world of light, lighting and its applications. Lighting designers, consulting engineers, researchers, students, professors, manufacturers and sales staff all contribute, and all are members of the LAI. There are currently 29 members within the association and delegates who sit on various committees within the electrical industry.

Passion for lighting

Lighting Association of Ireland (LAI) chair, Gearóid McKenna started his new position at the end of 2021. He is Managing Director of Task LED and has over 40 years of experience in the lighting industry. Gearóid shows a keen interest in circular product design, which focuses on the development of methods and tools that enable the design of products that are used more than once. “I feel that the energy-saving revolution from LEDs is particularly important. We have 50% energy savings across the board and now it is really evolving from that. The first eight years of the LED revolution were about energy savings and now it is all about developing and using light sensors,” he commented. “Good design is very important here and we fully support that philosophy. As an association, we are very conscious of outdoor lighting in public grounds, for example, where the light is beaming up, and we need to be careful about protecting the trees and insects in the area.”

LIGHTING

THE COMPANY HAS BUILT A STRONG REPUTATION IN THE INDUSTRY THANKS TO ITS INNOVATIVE APPROACH AND GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND NOW OFFERS NEXT- DAY SERVICE IN IRELAND… Forum Lighting celebrates 10th anniversary

F orum are approaching their 10th year and have enjoyed a successful decade of year-on-year growth. This has coincided with building a very strong reputation in the industry as a reliable supplier of great-value and innovative light fittings across ranges including domestic outdoor, coastal, bathroom and kitchen lighting, as well as the distribution rights for the Stanley site lighting range. Great customer service A key factor in their development into a recognised brand in the lighting market has been service levels. They have a wonderful group of friendly, industry-experienced internal account managers and an excellent external field sales team, which have helped develop some strong and lasting relationships with distributors. These internal and external teams are backed up by an

ever-increasing product range, offering items of high quality at a competitive price point. Forum are always looking to innovate and, over the years, have worked closely with customers to fulfil requirements for ranges such as domestic outdoor lighting suitable for coastal areas, mains voltage LED kitchen lighting without drivers and decorative bathroom lighting to add an attractive finishing touch to any bathroom. New next-day service Prompt delivery is another badge of pride for Forum and, since January 16, the company has also been able to provide next-day service to Irish customers with a much lower carriage paid order value in place. Forum’s initial stock holding in Ireland is considerable and is based on the fastest-moving items sold in the local market to date.

As the business in Ireland expands, Forum are now ideally placed to top up and grow this local stock. This will enable them to hold any lines locally that distributors identify as being of interest to them. Forum are keen to be considered a trusted supplier and are convinced this increased service level is one of the pillars to achieve this objective. Please be sure to contact the team for any further information on the company or product range.

FLUORESCENT COLOURS PROVIDE VISIBILITY AT DAWN, DUSK, AND DURING THE DAY, WHILE REFLECTIVE MATERIALS ARE IDEAL FOR DARK CONDITIONS AND HAZARDOUS WORK ENVIRONMENTS… Make yourself seen with Snickers Workwear

W hen worksite visibility decreases, the risk of workplace accidents increases. That’s the reason why Snickers works so hard developing and improving their wide range of hard-working high-vis workwear. Their fluorescent colours make you easier to be seen at dawn, dusk, and during the day, while the manufacturer’s reflective materials make it easier to see you in dim and dark conditions. This is all about staying visible, so you can stay safe. Orange is the cold yellow What’s the difference between fluorescent orange and fluorescent yellow? Remember, this is all about increasing visibility, and it is usually a lot easier to spot someone wearing a neon yellow garment than an orange one. That is because yellow has a higher luminance (or appears brighter to the naked eye). However, in a snowy winter landscape, the

luminance of yellow is outdone by the higher contrast of orange – especially against a background of white. So, in bright snowy weather you will want to dress in orange, and in most other cases yellow will do the trick. Stay visible, stay safe Being instantly seen and discovered can be a lifesaver in hazardous work environments. High-visibility clothing is a vital part of personal protection when working in dim light conditions. Snickers’ collection of high-vis garments offers a diverse choice of functionality and comfort.

International honours for Co Wicklow lighting firm

Bray’s Wink Lighting received an Honourable Mention at the international LIT Lighting Design Awards for 2022 for its dynamic lighting design at Alexandra Bridge, Dublin Port. LIT Design Awards honour the best in lighting product design and lighting design globally, advancing the appreciation of design worldwide. Working closely with Darmody Architecture, Wink’s design incorporated shield LEDs to ensure light pollution was kept to a minimum.

Alexandra Bridge has a distinct robust design and was highlighted using a wave of dappled luminaires. The luminaries are connected to a tidal sensor so at high tide, the lights sparkle brighter and inversely when the tide is low, the light levels dim. Four projectors with gobo shutters frame the structure without light spill onto the upper deck and road below. The underbelly of the bridge was lit using eight projectors installed between each truss for minimal disruption of clean lines seen on the bridge.

EIFI PARTNERS WITH EIGSI GOLF SOCIETY TO RECRUIT GOLFERS IN THE ELECTRICAL SECTOR AND HOSTS NINE OUTINGS A YEAR… Tee up with fellow golfers in the industry

E lectrical Industries Federation of Ireland (EIFI) will partner with the Electrical Industries Golfing Society of Ireland (EIGSI) to encourage more involvement from golfers within the country’s electrical industries. The associations also plan to bring the Dublin Regional Golfing Society (DREGS) and the Lighting Association of Ireland (LAI) golf societies under the one umbrella and incorporate the “Peter Church Trophy”, which will be played for at the Castleknock Golf Club on Friday,

April 28. Both EIFI and EIGSI feel that the time is right to revitalise the golfing society after a difficult period living through the Covid pandemic. The EIGSI hosts nine outings per year; the season starts in March and culminates with the final events held over two days in September at the Captains Weekend. The first outing of 2023 will be on the South Course of the K Club, in Kildare, on Friday, March 31. More details at www.eigsi.ie

The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has launched the latest Lighting Guide – 07 (LG7): Offices addressing uncertainty around how office space will be used in the future and the reuse of existing equipment. With increased hybrid working and the use of portable devices, people are spending less time at their desks and in the office. This revision of Lighting Guide 7 now includes home office lighting advice. For the first time, this guidance includes a chapter focused on the impact of embodied and operational energy; it also encourages the re-use of equipment where possible. SLL’s TM66: Creating a circular economy in the lighting industry, provides more detailed information on reusing existing equipment. The SLL is a division of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE); the LG7 guides apply in general to Northern Ireland but there are minor variations for LG12 Emergency lighting. CABLE MANAGEMENT

CORE DISTRIBUTION ENCOURAGES THE SECTOR TO MAKE MORE INFORMED DECISIONS AND COMMIT TO MANUFACTURING, SPECIFYING AND INSTALLING PVC-U CABLE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS WITH A MINIMUM OF 50% RECYCLED PLASTIC... Sustainable cable management

O n the road to net zero, of global warming, not only by reducing landfills and greenhouse gases but also by saying no to single-use plastic. We should aim at zero carbon emissions by the industry needs to act now to limit the damages decreasing the use of fossil fuels but can’t forget that the incineration of plastics also produces gigatons of CO 2 emissions every year. The construction industry uses an impressive amount of materials and creates a lot of waste. Throughout the entire supply chain, we all have a role to play. You can act by making informed decisions when producing, buying, installing and removing materials and products, including plastic cable management. With the ‘Window Into Cable Management’ campaign, Marshall- Tufflex, manufacturer and supplier of cable management solutions and represented by Core Distribution in Ireland, are leading the route towards more sustainable cable management. Together, they encourage the sector to make more informed decisions and commit to manufacturing, specifying and installing PVC-U cable management solutions with a minimum of 50% recycled plastic.

Plastic, the black sheep Plastic is often pointed at as being the ultimate evil waste. And indeed, it degrades at such a slow rate that it has invaded lands and oceans, creating a massive amount of harmful pollution. However, we also cannot deny that plastic is here, and it is still the best option available for many applications. Using plastic responsibly in the cable management industry is extremely achievable. By using recycled plastic instead of virgin plastic for manufacturing products we can considerably minimise the environmental impact and prevents it from ending up in landfill or the ocean. The benefits of recycled PVC-U So why are we struggling to get there? The suitability of recycled PVC-U material in manufacturing has raised concerns: strength, durability, surface finish, aesthetics and so on. However, these concerns are easily addressable. Recycled PVC-U is broken down into small chips, impurities are removed, and the product is refined to make pure white PVC. It can be recycled at least seven times and has a lifespan of around

140 years. A rigorous quality control process ensures a high-quality finish is achieved every time. Products that don’t come out as desired can easily go back through the recycling cycle again. For more than 75 years, Marshall- Tufflex has been pioneering plastic extrusion and led the way in product research, development and innovation, especially when it comes to using recycled material. They have successfully manufactured cable management made of recycled PVC-U for over 20 years. To do so, they use ‘post-industrial waste’ windows (waste windows from window fabricators) or ‘post- consumer waste’ windows (windows that have come out of buildings at the end of their useful life). Because windows are designed to withstand external elements, they obtain a raw material that is more robust and of higher quality than virgin PVC. Dan Fisher, Managing Director of Core Ireland, confirmed, “We have worked closely with our recycling partners over the past years to produce a sustainable, recycled material ideal for manufacturing cable management products. Consequently, our focus has been on quality and testing to maximise the recycled content, which also improves the quality of our

products. It’s a programme that has worked extremely well, and so we are very proud to now be using such high levels of recycled material.” Towards sustainable cable management specifications Last year, Marshall-Tufflex was able to use 74% recycled material across their PVC-U product range. The manufacturer is currently working towards encouraging more industry players to contribute to taking the stance of manufacturing/specifying/ installing PVC-U cable management with a minimum content of 50% recycled plastic. Dan commented, “We hope our drive to encourage the market to use products with a high recycled PVC content will encourage other manufacturers to up their recycling and reuse efforts. If more cable management producers and suppliers joined us, we could double or treble that amount, which would make a terrific impact on the environmental performance of our sector and contribute towards a circular economy.” Core Distribution is proud to support this initiative and calls on specifiers and contractors in Ireland to help drive up the sector’s eco-credentials by integrating plastic recycling to their specifications.

IEM: What have been the biggest changes you have seen in the industry recently? MS: There have been a few noticeable shifts that have shaped the industry. The change to the Irish wiring regulations when we moved from PVC to LSF was a significant adjustment. It may also come as no surprise, but Brexit was a real challenge as there were considerable knock-on effects in terms of supplier logistics. Being able to rapidly adapt to change is key in this industry.
