in L’Orignal court on July 8. TheMinistry of Transportation states that the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) for fully licensed drivers is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (0.08). Driving with anything over that is a criminal offence, and will result in penalties that could include fines, suspension or loss of driver’s license, jail time, and a significant

increase in insurance rates. Drivers under the age of 21 must respect the zero alcohol limit or face similar penalties. The latest Ministry of Transportation report states that 231 people were killed in alcohol and drug-related accidents and 84 inattentive driving related accidents in 2012.The report also states that one person is killed every 15 hours on Ontario roads.

Compassionate care benefits gets more support Increased financial support, proposed for individuals taking care of family members facing a signi- ficant risk of death, was highlighted by MP Pierre Lemieux on June 8. Compassionate care benefits, which are provided through the Employment Insurance (EI) program, are available to individuals temporarily away from work to care for a sick family member with a significant risk of death. Effective January 3, 2016, the proposed enhanced benefit will allow claimants to collect up to 26 weeks of benefits, up from the current six weeks. The benefits can also be taken within an expanded period of 52 weeks (up from 26 weeks) and can be shared between family members. “I am pleased that families in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell and across the country will be able to access these enhanced benefits when needed,” said Lemieux.

WWI visits the L’Orignal Prison

Good meet, but not much to swap Next year’s WWI exhibition will focus on the home front with events such as the fire at Parliament, dealing with the Spanish Flu, the explosion inHalifax and women going to work. More information on the L’Orignal Prison and upcoming events is available at www. lorignalprison.com. learning experience,” said Dale Garuin, a volunteer at the prison. “There are so many things people don’t know anything about.” Some families have donated entire displays from family members that served in WWI, such as Private Conrad Dubois, who was drafted in 1917. Dubois kept a journal of his experiences, calling the war of mud and lice an ordeal. The Barton family also loaned the exhibit collectables from relatives that had served. The halls of the prison exhibit area are lined with makeshift trenches, created by Françoise and André Lussier. Volunteers from École secondaire publique Le Sommet, École secondaire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury (ESCRH), teachers and students have created some of the artwork for the retrospective. Students have created posters, and paintings, and teachers have created authentic tombstones and a banner of Flanders Fields. “The teachers were quite involved,” said Bédard. “Le Sommet’s shop teacher, Gilbert Paquette, created the tomb stones, and art teacher, NadineMalo-Lemire, created the banner.” The exhibition will run until December, with several other activities going on at the prison in the next fewmonths, including a very popular play entitled La Dernière Pendaison, a murder mystery evening, a comedy show, and a magic show.

We also found some information from Parliament.” Most of the memorabilia on display are from local families that had relatives that had gone to war; a father, uncle, or grandfather. Some of the items on display include photos, coins, buttons, discharge papers, hobnail boots, helmets, shell casings, newspapers, uniforms, medals, and letters. “It’s really a

A motorcycle and car parts swap meet was held June 6, the same day as the Trash and Treasure hunt in Vankleek Hill. While the sunny day brought a lot of visitors and good stories, there wasn’t much to swap for mechanic enthusiasts. “I was here last October for the swap and there was a lot more tables and vendors,” said Owen Elgin, a motorcycle fanatic fromBarrhaven. “I’m disappointed because I’m looking for parts for my old 1965 Harley. At least the beer was good and everyone was super friendly.” There were only a few tables beside the brewery with t-shirts and a bunch of car andmotorcycles parts. While the swapping was almost inexistent, visitors did make some contacts and got some advice to better their rides. (SL)

On s’amuse pendant trois jours.
