This week ’ s dispatch is from the International Conference Centre in Edinburgh, home these past couple of days to the annual gathering of

On Wednesday, Mr Matthews and I will be hosting our first Parent Forum of the year. Please come to the senior school after drop off for an 8.15am start. This meeting will have an open agenda, so please do bring ideas, but by default we expect to be feeding back on developments since last year ’ s parent survey. Parents will be welcomed to the senior school for coffee with Jane after drop off on Friday morning; in the Dining Hall, so come to the main reception. Last week ’ s Macmillan events were enormously successful with close to £1000 raised by parents and pupils. Today the prep school had its own clothes charity day, the focus was Edukid (our global citizenship partner) and next week in the senior school, French House have chosen to support Smile Train. This weekend, the rehearsals for Into the Woods continue whilst staff and boarding pupils will be taking on the running of our local ParkRun. Year 6 head off to the hills in pursuit of their John Muir award goals. Hutton House

Heads, for the first time including both prep and senior. It has been a wonderful opportunity to hear from inspirational speakers and share ideas with fellow heads, all on the theme of Enlightened Education. It has also been a joy for me to see something of this beautiful city for the first time. Last week's open mornings at both Prep and Senior Schools were wonderfully positive. It was a real pleasure to meet with so many families clearly keen to join us, mostly on the back of recommendations from current parents - so, thank you. On Tuesday, it was great to welcome Exeter Cathedral School Year 7 pupils for a day of arts. Next week, transition to Senior School begins as we look forward to our own Year 6 pupils visiting the senior school. Those applying to join then next year, will also be joining us.

Nursery Round - up Nursery School News From Miss Lizzie Hayes - Head of Nursery School

The Nursery School children are thoroughly enjoying their dance lessons with Miss Sophie, developing their coordination through imaginary movement.

In P.E they have been working on throwing and catching skills using scarves.

Onsite Forest School activities have focused on exploring weight using natural resources, This topic further developed indoors using scales to weigh conkers and fir - cones that the children had found on previous expeditions around the College grounds. This week ’ s cookery session continued the apple theme with the children making apple puffs allowing them to practise their cutting skills with specialist child safe knives. They chopped and diced their apple, placed this on a puff pastry base that they had cut out, after decorating with some sugar and raisins. These scrummy cooked creations were gobbled up with enthusiasm at snack time!

Prep School Mr Henry Matthews - Head of Prep

Prep charity day in aid of Edukid

This week has seen a return to a more steady pace in the Prep School, following the very busy one last week. The children have found their rhythm

to the one we experience at Queen ’ s.

may even be brave and share the video in assembly next week. As we look ahead to next week, our Year 6 cohort are excited to take part in their Discovery Day on Tuesday. Current Year 6 parents are invited to come in and find out what life in the Senior School holds for their children. There are a host of fixtures and activities and a reminder that our next parents ’ coffee morning is on Fri 14 Oct, 8.15 - 9.30am in the Dining Hall and then of course Harvest Festival in the afternoon. I am sure I will see many parents and friends at this event, make sure you bring your singing voices!

Year 2, very much enjoyed their visit to Rural Life Museum to learn about materials. Off site visits form a key part of our learning at Queen ’ s and I know that the children will have taken away much knowledge and inspiration from the visit. I am also very proud of the way in which the children behaved and represented Queen ’ s, Great work Year 2! Whilst the Prep School has been working hard in class this week, I have been at the IAPS and HMC joint conference, working with heads and school leaders across the country in both the state and independent sector. We have heard from a range of speakers on subjects such as equality, diversity, inclusion and creativity as well as how to encourage and support a greater risk taking culture in our children to ensure they are effective leaders in the future. I even took a risk myself and joined a flash - mob choir, something which certainly took me outside of my comfort zone and has given me a greater understanding of how incredible our children are when they get up to perform on stage. I

and have been working hard in lessons and they are truly enjoying their learning. Although there have been no major events this week, there has, as always been exciting and engaging lessons and some trips out and about. I am sure you will see much of this in the following pages. Today we are very proud to have launched our first fundraising event for our international charity, Edukid and this was very much enjoyed by our pupils. Mrs Kelly has done a fantastic job in developing links with Edukid. Today's event follows a range of assemblies and learning opportunities in lessons, in which our children are finding out about life in Cambodian schools. Behind the scenes the Edukid team are setting up links with schools, teachers and children who we hope to be able to meet virtually in the coming year. This is an exciting opportunity for us to work closely with a partner school that has a vastly different education system

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Prep School Prep Sports Round - up

Some great sports action has taken place both at home and away in Prep School this week. The varied Autumn weather has not dampened the spirits of the Prep School children . The U11 boys were brought back to earth with a bump after their success last Wednesday, with a hard match against Exeter School on Friday. The following day the U11 girls took part in their first big tournament on our very own astro. They too met some tough opposition with seven schools competing in a very busy but positive tournament, with lots of game play for all. Queen ’ s performed well and learnt a huge amount, securing one win, three draws and two losses. Well done to Kings Hall who were winners on the day, and thank you to all who came and played and supported. Wednesday saw some of the A teams off to Perrott Hill for the boys and Sherborne for the girls. Some great matches for the U11A boys playing in a triangular, with two wins and a draw. The U10 boys found their matches

challenging and lost some of the momentum they had gained in the last couple of weeks. . The girls were in fine form on the bus over to Sherbourne and also gained a good win with some fine goals, one of which was scored from an effective short corner.

Year 2 Materials session at the Rural Life Museum

The museum workshop offered the children a chance to develop their understanding of materials and their uses outside the classroom. They took part in three activities - carrying out a science investigation to test the properties of wool. Going on a material hunt around the museum and using a feely bag to explore a range of materials and their properties. A highlight was seeing all the museum exhibits, and learning how the materials used to make objects has changed over the years. The children had a fantastic day and were a credit to the school.

Prep School

Eco Team

The Prep Eco team had an Autumnal meet this week, harvesting apples and pears from the garden of Mr and Mrs Noad. While the team felt honoured to be allowed to gather in this delicious harvest, they also felt extra invested in the end product as the apples and pears will be given to both the Food and Nutrition department and our kitchens. They are hoping for another school - grown apple crumble, like the one they enjoyed for lunch this week. We will also be using the apples in teaching to make a baked spiced apple dish and

apple bread and the canteen in apple tray bakes and apple chutney in the dining hall.

The Eco team are also looking forward to a delivery of another 600 bulbs from Bulbs4schools for the Prep School to plant just after half tem. We are aiming to create as many pollinators as possible for Spring.

The winners of the European Day of Languages Bake Off The winners of the European Day of Languages Bake Off for the Prep School were presented with their prizes in Chapel on Tuesday. Mrs Webber showed photos of all the wonderful entries while Mr Mann explained why they were picked as winners. Judging was very difficult as the standard was so high and all the pupils who entered had really excelled themselves. The overall winner was Charlotte while Stella , Ella and Sophia were highly commended. They all received certificates, an engraved wooden spoon and Charlotte was also presented with a Baking Book.

inside the feeding trough to try and get the most to eat! When it comes to meal times they love to 'swine' and dine on pig nuts but for special treats, they have potato peelings, vegetable peelings, and fruit, with the favourite food is melon skin. "They both hear the latch go on the gate and race to the feed trough as they know this means food time. We play a game with them to see how far we can get before they hear us. They have amazing hearing", says Isabelle. "They also snore so loudly", added Ben, "they will be laid in the sun, deep in sleep, with their tails twitching and the snoring can be heard from the house!" They are also amazing escape artists, with one act of insu - boar - dination seeing them both escape into the cow yard and try and eat all the cattle feed, other times making an almighty mess in the pig ark with all the straw pushed to a corner and digging giant holes. Mr Mann said he was, "delighted with the success of the growing and rearing programme of teaching and learning at Queen's College as part of a whole school approach to food and understanding more about where our food comes from. I must pass on a massive thanks to Queen's College parents John and Vicki Wattam for all their generous help and support in making this happen, and I am delighted to announce that we will be building on this success with the addition of two calves and two lambs in the coming year". If you missed our Queen's College pigs on TV you it you can watch it again on BBC iPlayer by clicking the link below. Our segment starts at 38:00. https:// www.bbc.co.uk/.../m0019n5f/countryfile - jersey - 2

If you were one of 'sow' many asking for an update after our Queen's College pigs after they made their TV debut in front of £6.8 million viewers on BBC1 this summer, then you've 'pigged' the right place to find out more. The whole educational experience has been a wonderful collab - boar - ation between Queen's College and a local farm just down the road where two of our pupils Ben in Year 7 from Senior school and Isabelle in Year 5 from Prep have been put in charge of the day - to - day business of rearing our piglets. When BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson came to visit the school in June, the names 'pigged' by our pupils for our two new piglets where 'Percy' and 'George'. Since filming, both Percy and George are now 25 weeks old and sow - prizingly now weigh over 70 kilograms! As they have grown they have developed their own porcine - alities with Percy, the pig with the whiter tail, being the friendliest and George being a little more reserved. The exception to this is food time when George can often be seen stub - boar - nly stood actually

Senior School Sports Round - up

It ’ s been another busy week of sport for the Senior squads this week with Saturday hockey and rugby against Plymouth College and West Buckland respectively, a four schools swimming gala, basketball and a county hockey tournament for the U14 girls.

Rugby

Hockey

In hockey against Plymouth on Saturday, the 13As continued with their momentum with another outstanding win and goals from India (1) and Eliza (2), most valuable players went to Megan Clark and Emily Neenan. The 13Bs followed suit with

The rugby boys played West Buckland this weekend, with the U13, U14, U15 and 1st XV in the spotlight. Team of the week were the U15s with their third win from three in another great team performance. They ’ re certainly proving to be an exciting team to watch and see develop! The 1st XV continue to be heavily injury hit, but nevertheless those that stepped out onto the field played a brave game and scored two tries. Most valuable players were Spencer and Louis . The U14s continue to show improvements in supporting the ball carrier and competing for the ball on the floor. In a highly competitive game Luke Sherwin and Asa Weston should be applauded for their season debuts. The U13s had a tough outing against a well drilled team, but it allowed them to put into practice much of what they have been learning in their games and squad sessions.

the winning ways, coming away with a 3 - 0 in an excellent show of hockey skill and teamwork.

Meanwhile U15As learned a lot from Mila with her relentless hustle, and are inspired to play their A game for the full duration of their next match against Clayesmore. the The 1st team game was a hotly contested match, with the result easily having gone either way. Taking control of much of the pitch and with a significant number of D entries the girls were unlucky to have come second at the final whistle. Edie did a great job as on pitch captain this weekend while Pippa took to the sidelines to provided coaching and team support.

Senior School Sports Round - up

NSEA National Championship Show Jumping Qualifier A small team of riders represented Queen ’ s at Bicton Arena on Sunday,

Swimming The U13, U15 and U18 squads went to Exeter School in the first of a series of 4 - schools' galas. We saw some Year 7 pupils taking part in the first gala of this kind and they did Queen's proud. It was brilliant to see over 30 pupils representing the College so early in the season. A huge thank you and well done to all those who took part. Basketball Queen ’ s showed unstinted determination couple with a strong sporting attitude and energy in abundance in an amiable test of our ability against Sidcot this week. With a smaller team than normal (in all senses) a small transfer window allowed us to loan two Sidcot players who made our players consider their tactics and how to control the game. A much improved defence came at the expense of successful offence, but allowed us to narrow the lead in what ended up as a loss. Nevertheless the boys drew praise from the Sidcot coaching team and Headmaster for their etiquette.

competing in a variety of jumping classes from 0.80m to 1.10m. All competed well and Georgie riding Kissed by Fire rode a clear round in the 1:00m competition to gain a provisional 2nd place. Unfortunately the day was curtailed due to an unfortunate incident (not Queen ’ s and all ok

thankfully). We look forward to further outings from our equestrian team(s) throughout the year.

Year 9

Year 9 have been exploring the work of Micheal McConnel in Art and are all working towards producing a life - size self - portrait! Miss Burgoyne is incredibly proud of their achievements so far and can't wait to see their incredible drawing skills on a much bigger scale!

Hannah in Year 11 was our KS4 winner for the European Day of Languages Bake Off

Hannah was our KS4 winner for the European Day of Languages Bake Off. You can see her here with her prize. Her clog cake was both creative in design and absolutely delicious!

Senior School Discover Queen ’ s: Performing Arts Day for Exeter Cathedral School

This week we welcomed pupils from Exeter Cathedral School to Queen ’ s.

The whole of their Year 7 arrived to enjoy a jam - packed day of singing, drama, dance and theatre inspired art. Inspired by the theme of “ Wishes Come True ”, the visitors learned songs and dances from ‘ Mary Poppins ’ with Miss Wills and Miss Buckingham. They then took part in drama workshops thinking about making wishes to turn friends and enemies into pets, in the style of ‘ Bedknobs and Broomsticks ’. Finally, they made replica armour in the style of the invisible warriors from the finale of the

beloved Disney film. Everybody seemed to join in with great enthusiasm! On the subject of wishing, we invited our visitors to watch a performance of ‘ Into the Woods ’ which is a musical that considers the risks of dreams coming true. It was fabulous to welcome the pupils and their staff to Queen ’ s and look forward to seeing them here again soon.

Music Tech

In our music tech classes, we have been learning about the many ways of recording, mixing, and mastering music. From choosing and positioning microphones in a studio setup to sequencing synthesised sounds to create musical soundscapes. We will be covering all the different areas in music production to enable all of our technicians to thrive in their own way and genre. Having covered the technical aspects of music production, we will be recording and creating covers and original songs for use within our upcoming music and dance showcases. The use of songs produced by our music technicians in our dance performances will provide a brilliant

cooperation between our Co - Curriculum programs.

Sixth Form Maths Scholars Event

Miss Hill led a discussion on group theory, a branch of mathematics that has close links to economics, science, sociology and computer science. Ten students started with a game of ‘ guess ⅔ of the average ’ where the winner of the game is the closest to this value. Repeated games demonstrate what happens once the students jump from rationality to common knowledge of rationality and eventually reach the Nash Equilibrium. Students also discussed the Prisoner ’ s Dilemma and how the outcomes can be represented in a play - off matrix and how to find the play - safe strategy. The highlight of the session came when the students got to play the game of ‘ matching

pennies ’ in pairs and experimented with having a strategy and psyching out their opponent or watching for tells. A discussion followed on how to work out the probability distribution for a mixed strategy game but with the realisation that this is difficult to achieve in real life due to human nature - we are designed to spot patterns making it very difficult to randomise events.

Early Applications Pippa and Fallon

UCAS season has begun again in the Sixth Form, with a growing buzz of anticipation in the air as applications begin to make their way to the final touches stage. After much checking of personal statements and perfecting of school references the first two applications have been sent with many more lined up in the departure lounge. Well done to Pippa and Fallon for being the first 2 past the post with early applications sent off for medicine and conservatoires. We look forward to the many applications to come and wish the best of luck to those already sent!

Value of Food Interview with Sarah Calcutt of UK Rural Policy Group Vice - chair and Founding Partner of the UK's Rural Policy Group met with Year 13 Munopa Nhete virtually yesterday as part of her Food Science and Nutrition investigation into the value of food in the current cost of living crisis.

Munopa questioned Sarah, who also Chairs the National Fruit Show and Chairs the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust on how the current high rates of inflation might be exacerbating the UK's food system and highlighting the need for a food supply that is resilient and works for both food businesses and consumers. Their discussion reflected on the business, cultural, policy and political considerations that reinforce the consumer expectations of low - price.

Sixth Form MUN

Tadhg, Alec and Olivia in Year 12, and Rebecca and Tristan in Year 9 went to Surrey on Friday to attend an MUN (Model United Nations). A rigorous competition of debating current affairs stretching from the World Health Organization to the Security Council in the United Nations. Spending the night on Friday, accompanied by Mr. O ’ Donell and Mrs. Perry, the students began the event on Saturday from 9am to 6pm. There was a full day of making speeches, drafting resolutions and debating clauses which concluded with Queen ’ s ending the day with a victory. The achievement of ‘ Best Delegate ’ was awarded to Alec for his work in the Crisis Committee and the school could not be more proud and indeed proud of the other pupils who took part. Queen ’ s is looking towards participating in more MUNs in the future and we hope that the success at the Reigate MUN will further encourage more to participate in the upcoming conferences. We wish the students luck in their next competitions.

Sixth Form A Level Geography trip to Belfast and the Antrim coast

Year 12 and 13 Geographers spent Monday and Tuesday this week in Northern Ireland.

Monday was spent in Belfast studying the 'troubles', redevelopment and the changing socio - economic profile of the city. This included a bus tour, research in the City Hall and a visit to the Titanic Experience. The group then had some R&R (bowling) and dinner in the SSE building which is a flagship redevelopment project in the city. After a good night's sleep and an even better breakfast the group travelled North to the spectacular Antrim coast where they studied evidence for recent sea level change and the development of the world famous Giant's Causeway. It was an extremely busy two days but the group had a great experience, learned a tremendous amount and were good company. Well done to all.

Gold DofE training River Parrett

The Year 12 Gold DofE Canoeists completed their first expedition training day last Sunday. Although we met at school in the rain, by the time we reached the River Parrett, the sun was shining and we all enjoyed some wonderful early autumn weather. In the morning the teams worked on their basic boat handling skills before taking the plunge in the afternoon working through a range of deep water rescue scenarios. This culminated in an 'All in' rescue where the entire group was in the river and all the boats were submerged! The group did fantastically well and learned many new skills. They were enthusiastic and positive throughout despite spending a significant proportion of the day in the water instead of in the boats! Very well done to all.

Boarders Corner Hutton House Meal The girls at Hutton House enjoyed a lovely evening and meal out at the Cosy Club last Friday night.

Graffiti workshop Over the weekend we had 13 boarders take part in a graffiti workshop. They began by learning some graffiti techniques, they then put these into practice. Designing and painting their own pieces. Which were then finished off by our graffiti artist to give their pieces that magical finish.

Hutton

As well as going out for a meal on Friday night the girls had a fabulous weekend making pancakes and some of the girls even developed their babysitting skills by helping to look after Baby River Miss William ’ s baby. Last Sunday the girls visited Cabots Circus. After a busy week at school, everyone was excited to have some time away from school and enjoyed visiting another local city. By the return to school, everyone was shopped out, as highlighted by the accumulation of shopping bags outside of the dining hall!

Christmas Sparkle

Christmas Sparkle was founded in 2015 with the aim of giving a Christmas present to every child and young person aged 0 - 18 years living in difficult circumstances in the SWT/Taunton and Wellington community. Last year, thanks to the generosity of local people, we were able to provide gifts for over 1,484 children and young people. We are aware that there is going to be even greater need this year. We work with local charities and agencies e.g. The Foodbank, Women ’ s Refuge, PFSAs. We were proud winners of the 2019 Mayor ’ s Citizenship award. We work in partnership with My Day who kindly collect gifts from donation points and deliver to agencies. We give only brand - new age appropriate gifts which are donated by local businesses, schools and members of the public. Wrapping events are held in Santa ’ s workshop, aka our base, throughout November and December, generously provided by Summerfield Developments. Members of the public are invited to these events and schools and local groups help for an hour or two which makes it a real community event. Cheesy Christmas music and festive refreshments help to make the day fun for everyone! All financial donations go straight back into the project. They are used for wrapping paper, gift tags and gifts for shortage age groups; typically 8 - 18 year old boys and babies. Please help us to make Christmas special for hundreds of children living in difficult circumstances in our community, suggestions of donations can be found here. We need your help to support families in need this Christmas by donating gifts. We just ask that all gifts are new and are not wrapped. There will be collection points in Senior Reception, Birtchall Hall and Pre - Prep Foyer.
