New Relay for Life in Prescott-Russell

People in Russell County no longer have to go as far as Maxville in neighbouring Prescott County now if they want to show their support for the fight against cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society inaugurated a new Relay for Life event for its Eastern Ontario operations in Plantagenet. About 150 people braved stormy weather last Friday for the June 12 event at École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet. But they did not have to get soaked to the skin to show their support both for surivors of cancer and the people researching for a final cure for the disease. The inaugural Relay for Life saw teams march through and around the inside of the school to make good on all of the pledges they had collected. In total, the first official Plantagenet Relay for Life event raised about $45,000 for support of cancer research and treatment programs. Sylvie Guénette, cancer society official, described the dedication
and support of both relay participants and volunteers as phenomenal. «We had close to 150 people take part with at least 100 volunteers backing them up during the entire evening,» Guénette said. «All these people worked very hard. It’s all so extraordinary, what everyone did.» Relay participants and volunteers enjoyed a «holiday at the beach» for their event, with a beachball replacing the traditional Relay for Life baton, and everyone encouraged to dress up in summer gear or pyjamas. Acti- vity kiosks and caregivers were on site to entertain and look after the children of any participants not walking the six-hour circuit with their parents. Bare the head for cancer Many Relay for Life participants have their heads shaved, both to show support for cancer patients who lose their hair as a result of chemotherapy and also to donate the hair,

if it is long enough and in suitable condition, for making wigs for cancer patients, both children and adults. Nadia Bourgon gave up her hair for can- cer. The 11-year-old is a veteran at doing
this and has no plans to ever stop donating her hair if i twill help someone with cancer. «I do it for those who have lost their hair because of cancer,» she said. «Especially for little children. I am happy to do it.
7000 $ pour la Marche de l’Alzheimer
C’est le 14 juin dernier que plusieurs personnes ont pris part à la Marche de l’Alzheimer. Menée par l’agent de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario, Serge Gauthier, tous se sont donné lamainpour faire le tour de l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale, à Rockland. Gilbert Arial a partagé par la suite son histoire avec la foule pour parler de la maladie qui le touche. Au cours de la journée, les fonds recueillis ont atteint 7000 $. L’événement, qui est un succès, reviendra l,année prochaine avec, on s’y en attend, encore plus de marcheurs dans le but de trouver un remède contre cettemaladie. En 2011, 747 000 Canadiens étaient atteints de troubles cognitifs.

parce qu’on est la porte d’entrée de l’Onta- rio français. Je pense que les gens ne sont pas conscients du pouvoir qu’ils ont. On est une porte-parole pour la francophonie canadienne. » Côté financier, l’ACFO a fait plusieurs demandes de subventions cette année, dont deux ont déjà été acceptées. Ces deux sub- ventions sont d’unmontant total de 29 000 $. Une partie de ces fonds servira à payer un étudiant qui travaillera à temps plein pour l’été. D’autres demandes sont en attente, dont celles pour la St-Jean-Baptiste et la journée des Franco-Ontariens. Contraire- ment aux années passées, une demande de subvention pour le fonctionnement sera aussi faite à Patrimoine Canada. En bref, Mme Desabrais est très contente de ce qui est fait à l’ACFO et de l’avenir de l’organisme à but non lucratif qui reprend son envol à la suite de quelques années difficiles. « L’ACFO est vraiment en train de gran- dir. On est en épanouissement. L’ACFO de Prescott et Russell s’est impliquée beaucoup cette année dans la communauté. Il y a beau- coup de demandes de subvention de faites et on est plus présent dans les médias. On veut vraiment sensibiliser les gens et leur dire qu’on est là pour eux, qu’on est une association qui est là pour les desservir. Je
L’assemblée générale annuelle de l’Asso- ciation canadienne-française de l’Ontario de Prescott et Russell (ACFO) a eu lieu le 11 juin dernier, à l’École secondaire catho- lique de Plantagenet. Une vingtaine de personnes étaient présentes pour assister à la réunion. « Protéger le français est notre mandat premier. On est là pour promouvoir la fran- cophonie. » Tina Desabrais s’est donnée trois objectifs dans le cadre de ses fonctions à la présidence de l’ACFO, soit une plus grande représentation, une visibilité sociale et une sensibilisation des francophones de l’Est ontarien. Pour Mme Desabrais, le manque d’in- quiétude des francophones de l’Est ontarien envers la protection de leur langue est ce qui doit être changé. « Les francophones de l’Est ontarien sont en situation minoritaire dans un milieu majoritaire. Les gens ne sont pas inquiets de leurs services en français parce qu’en général, on peut très bien vivre en français dans l’Est ontarien. Moi, d’ajouter la prési- dente de l’ACFO, j’ai vu une certaine anglici- sation, mais je pense que les gens ne voient pas le coup venir. On veut les sensibiliser

Take precautions against summer burglars Residential break-ins are on the rise in the National Capital Region. Homeowners in both the City of Ottawa and surrounding areas are warned to take precautions to make sure their homes are secured during the summer season. Most of the burglary reports coming in involve entry through unlocked doors at the front and back of the home, including unlocked patio doors which may be left open a bit to allow for cool night-time breezes during summer heat waves. Garage door entries to a house are also a favourite target entry point for burglars if the garage is the open carport type of shelter. Make sure all doors and windows are locked and security bars in place if available when away from home or asleep at night or occupied in another part of the house during the day. Also make sure portable valuables like jewellery or wallets are not in plain sight. Report to police any suspicious person lurking in a neighbourhood.

Alfred-Plantagenet Groundwater Study The United Counties of Prescott and Russell and the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet have partnered with South Nation Conservation and the Ontario Geological Survey to study groundwater across the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. The purpose of the study is to develop maps of expected groundwater quantity and quality. The maps will help to assess the development potential of properties where wells are required as the water supply. To better understand the groundwater aquifers, private wells will be sampled across the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. We are looking for volunteers to be part of this groundwater study and receive free groundwater sampling of wells. Volunteers must live within the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet and have a well on their property. Well sampling will take place during the months of July and August 2015. All homeowners who participate will receive a free copy of the results from their well water (valued at about $500) and a summary report. No homeowner names, personal information or addresses will be published or released.
Étude des eaux souterraines du canton d’Alfred et Plantagenet Les Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell et le canton d’Alfred et Plantagenet ont établi un partenariat avec l’Agence de Conservation de la Nation Sud ainsi que la Commission géologique de l’Ontario afin d’effectuer une étude des eaux souterraines dans le canton d’Alfred et Plantagenet. Le but de l’étude est de développer des cartes démontrant la quantité et la qualité des eaux souterraines. Ces cartes seront utilisées pour évaluer la capacité hydrogéologique d’un terrain pour des projets d’infrastructure dans le futur. Pour accomplir ceci, des puits privés du canton d’Alfred et Plantagenet seront échantillonnés par l’Agence de Conservation de la Nation Sud. Nous sommes à la recherche de bénévoles pour participer à cette étude, qui est un programme sans frais. Toute personne intéressée doit être résident du canton d’Alfred et Plantagenet et avoir un puits sur leur terrain. Les échantillons seront recueillis pendant les mois de juillet et août 2015. Tout propriétaire qui participe à cette étude recevra une copie gratuite des résultats obtenus de leur puits, un service d’une valeur de 500 $. De plus, nous garantissons que votre information personnelle ne sera jamais publiée ou disséminée.

Water conservation notice for PR region
The recent rain storm may have made some of the streets seem like small riv- ers in towns and villages throughout the Prescott-Russell region. But there is still a slight water shortage for the area. The South Nation Conservation Agency (SNC) has issued a Level 1 LowWater Con- dition notice as of June 11. A Level 1 Notice means there is a potential for a water supply problem in the SouthNation River watershed but there is no cause for alarm at present if careful water conservation measures are observed. The SNC’s monitoring program for the watershed indicates that the past spring season has seen about 60 to 70 per cent of the historical average for rainfall in the region between the period from March to May. If the amount of rainfall during the late spring and early summer months continues at below-average levels then there is poten- tial for more serious water supply problems later in the year. The SNC suggests residents, businesses, and industries throughout the South Na- tion watershed region reduce their water consumption by at least 10 per cent. This is possible by doing away with non-essential water use and limiting needed water con- sumption as much as possible. Effective water conservation measures include: reducing personal shower time and also shutting off shower while soaping until it is time to rinse; make sure to use proper load size settings on washing machines; restrict lawn and garden watering to the early morning or late evening hours when the ground has a chance to absorb the water. Make sure not to leave sprinklers on during the night or during the heat of the day. Avoid car washing if possible or use a bucket for washing rather than just letting the hose run. The SNCwater response teamhas a June 17 review scheduled for an update review of watershedmonitoring reports and to discuss the low-water situation.The group includes representatives for municipalities within the SNC area, the agricultural sector and other special interest groups, and the pro- vincial environment and natural resources ministries. If below-average rainfall conditions con-
tinue during the immediate future, then the SNC will have to consider either Level 2 or Level 3 Condition alerts. Level 2means there is potential for a serious water supply problemwhile Level 3means drought con- ditions are possible because the available water supply cannot meet urgent needs for the watershed fish and wildlife and human inhabitants. The South Nation River watershed stretches from the headwaters of the South Nation River near Brockville and includes
tributary streams like the Castor River as the South Nation flows down to the Ottawa River. The watershed stretches east as far as Maxville and west to the City of Ottawa and all the riverside communities in the Prescott-Russell region. Anyone with information to help the wa- ter monitoring program can call toll-free to 1-877-984-2948 or go online to www.nation. on.ca for details on reporting any unusual stream conditions.
Navan murder mystery remembered A 75-year-old murder mystery that saw a Rockland OPP constable shot and killed while chasing down a suspect is the focus of a local history memorial display event June 20, 9:45 a.m., at the site where the Navan Railway Station once stood. The commemorative event is a joint effort of the Cumberland Township Historical Society and the City of Ottawa, through its commemorative naming project. In June 1940, local newspaper headlines screamed Murder In Navan and told readers the story of how Constable Harold Dent was shot and killed at the Navan Train Station. Following a brief chase later on, a stranger also lay dead in the woods nearby. The full story behind the story will be part of the 75 th memorial ceremony held at the site of the old train station, located just east of the intersection of Smith Road and the Prescott-Russell Trail. City officials and members of the Dent family will also unveil a commemorative plaque on the site and present in the name of Const. Dent a new rest area for trail hikers and cyclists. The Navan Lions Club, the Navan Community
Association, and the Navan Women’s Institute will provide a barbecue brunch afterwards. – Gregg Chamberlain

La Caisse populaire Trillium a profité de la clôture des festivités du 125 e anniversaire de la paroisse Très-Sainte-Trinité, lors du brunch à la salle Guy Faubert le 31mai, pour remettre la somme de 10 000 $ afin d’aider au financement des activités qui se sont déroulées au cours de l’année. Dès le départ, la Caisse populaire Trilliumavait indiqué son intention d’être partie prenante du succès de cette année jubilaire. « La Caisse populaire Trillium est fière d’être le partenaire officiel de toutes les activités du 125 e anniversaire de la paroisse de la Très-Sainte-Trinité. C’est le 14 juin dernier que le Club Optimiste de Hammond a organisé son 3 e tournoi de golf en l’honneur de Danny Nolan, membre fondateur décédé en 2011. À la suite du succès obtenu lors des deux premiers tournois et inspirés par son courage et sa détermination, les membres organisateurs de cette journée ont répété l’événement. Ils étaient donc 128 joueurs à prendre part à ce rendez-vous annuel. Grâce à cette journée, unmontant de 15 500 $ a été remis à la Fondation régionale du cancer d’Ottawa et au Centre hospitalier pour enfants de l’est de l’Ontario pour poursuivre les recherches sur le cancer infantile. On voit ici Tammy Nolan (nièce de Danny Nolan), Camille Masse, Hélène Nolan (femme de Danny Nolan), Réjean Chenier et Serge Brazeau, du comité organisateur du tournoi. United Church of Canada turned 90 years old June 10. In Cumberland, some of the parish’s volunteers and clerical staff at St. Andrew’s United Church took to the street to celebrate by handing out birthday brownies to each and every fortunate passerby on Old Montréal Road while the supplies lasted and while the church bell rang out 90 times.

Les visiteurs, qui s’étaient déplacés pour l’occasion, ont pu enapprendreunpeuplus sur lesdifférentes variétés de plantes comestibles comme les orties, les épinettes, etc. Boisés Est propose, chaque année, différents ateliers sur le territoire de Prescott-Russell. On voit ici Nathalie Mathieu, coordinatrice communautaire à la Maison Tucker, le petit Loïc Forget, et Jean-Claude Avard, secrétaire de Boisés Est.

Il y avait foule pour l’inauguration de Rona J. Lalonde & Fils, le 9 juin dernier, à Rockland. Nombreux sont ceux qui ont tenu à féliciter personnellement les coproprié- taires, Robert Lalonde et ses enfants, France et Serge, soit les 3 e et 4 e générations de l’entreprise, pour ce grand succès. On aurait dit une grande fête de famille et c’était justement là l’intention des Lalonde. « On voulait quelque chose d’assez intime pour par- tager ce grand moment avec la famille, les amis et les employés. On aura l’ouverture ocielle dans deux jours mais, ce soir, on est vraiment là pour prendre une petite bouchée et pour célébrer », a exprimé France Lalonde.
Naturellement, les dignitaires et les partenaires fai- saient partie de la cohorte des invités et ont semblé gagnés par l’ambiance festive, dès la porte franchie. Les discours avaient une saveur bien particulière, comme si chacun avait personnellement eu très à cœur la réussite du trio. Parmi eux, Luc Rodier, premier vice-président Détail pour Rona, Rocco Mattéo, vice-président opérations pour RONA Québec, Guy Desjardins, maire de la Cité de Clarence-Rockland en compagnie de conseillers munici- paux, ainsi que Jacques Brunet de Michanie Construction et Christian Robichaud de la rme d’ingénierie LRL. A LALONDE FAMILY-STYLE OPENING They showed up in droves for the June 9 special soirée celebrating the opening of the new Rockland RONA J. Lalonde & Fils. Everyone just wanted a chance to personally congratulate co-owners Robert Lalonde and his children, France and Serge, on their great success as the third- and fourth-generation of Lalondes to both continue and expand the family business. It was a great occasion well worth celebrating for the Lalonde family. «We wanted something warm and friendly to let us share this great occasion with our family, our friends, and our employees,» explained France Lalonde during the course of the evening. «The ocial opening is two days away, but this evening we are all here to enjoy a few treats, a little wine, and to celebrate.» The festive feeling won over everyone, from VIPs to friends, and among the comments and observations made during the evening, almost all had one thing in common : a heartfelt wish for the continued success of the Lalondes and their RONA franchises. Among the many wellwishers that evening were high-level RONA executives like Luc Rodier and Rocco Mattéo, Clarence-Rockland Mayor Guy Desjardins and several of the city’s councillors, along with Jacques Brunet of Michanie Construction and Christian Robichaud of the engineering rm, LRL. They and many others congratulated the Lalonde trio for their success in opening a second and larger franchise outlet in Rockland in company with the family’s original store in Hammond. Brunet and Robichaud also presented the Lalondes with a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion. «The great day has nally arrived,» declared Mayor Desjardins. «Look at all your hard work. You have good reason to be proud.»» Pierre Lemieux, Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP, passed on his good wishes on the occasion. «Prosperous businesses are the pillars of our economy,» the MP stated in his message. «I wish you great success.» Rodier, as a vice-president of RONA, during his remarks, made note of the fth generation of Lalondes pres- ent during the festivities. Serge Lalonde’s children, Maïka, Ély-Anne and Lucas, were on hand, which to Rodier seemed a good sign for the continuing future success of the family entreprise. «What a wonderful picture you all make,» he said. «Long life to your store and long life to your business.»

Pour nous, il est important ce soir de fêter avec vous, avec notre famille. Ce nouveau point de vente va nous per- mettre de nous rapprocher davantage de notre clientèle et de devenir la destination commer- ciale la plus novatrice dans le domaine de la quincaillerie et des matériaux de construction dans la région. Avec ces installations, nous pouvons vous orir plus de 20 000 produits en magasin. Ce nouveaumagasin permettra à nos clients de découvrir une ore boniée de produits, juste à temps pour les projets printaniers et estivaux d’entretien et de rénovation.
