Champlain Chief Administrative O!cer, Paula Knudsen, prepared an administrative report along with daycare coordinator Marie PageauHand"eld, regarding fee increases to daycare services, brought before council.#e fee increases will generate more revenue, therefore decreasing the daycares’ de"cit by approximately $130,000 by 2018. In 2014, the daycare services had a de"cit of $179,000, and have been running at a de"cit of approximately $70,000 to $106,000 since 2010. #e daycare services include #e Vankleek Hill Day Nursery, St. Jude’s Learning Centre, Journée Prolongée St-Gré- goire, Journée Prolongée Atelier, and Atelier des Petits. #e report indicates there is no exces- sive spending and daycares are very well managed, operating on a shoe string budget. Most of the daycare workers are contractual, so they do not receive any form of bene"ts other than vacation pay. Le nouveau capteur est relié à l’ordina- teur de la rue John, qui gère les feux de cir- culation environnant. Le nouveau capteur permet demieux synchroniser les feux selon l’achalandage et d’améliorer la &uidité de la circulation à ce point névralgique, qui accueille les voitures en provenance des deux autoroutes et du Québec. La sécurité et la &uidité de la circulation est une priorité en cemoment à Hawkesbu- ry, comme en témoigne le projet des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell sur le chemin de comté 17, où des feux de circulation pour- raient être ajoutés à l’intersection de Tupper et aussi à l’entrée de la Plaza Hawkesbury. De son côté, la Ville a également lancé l’idée d’installer des feux de circulation à l’inter- section des rues Cameron et Main, lorsque les travaux de réfection et de conduites seront terminés.
A"n de faciliter la circulation et de limiter l’attente inutile à l’intersection des rues Main et William, la Ville de Hawkesbury a récemment installé un capteur de détection de véhicules sur la Main. « Il y avait un problème de bouchon de circulation à cet endroit et en installant un capteur en direction est, en face du Dunn’s, cela nous permet d’avoir une lumière verte plus longtemps s’il y a des véhicules et aussi de rallonger le cycle de 15 secondes, a indi- qué le surintendant aux Travaux publics de la Ville de Hawkesbury, Alain Lavoie. Il y avait déjà un capteur sur William pour que les autos de William puissent tourner à gauche sur la Main, mais cela entraînait une lumière rouge plus longue sur laMain. »
New chiller under budget by almost $15,000 A new chiller was recently installed at the Vankleek Hill Arena with a cost much lower than anticipated. The project was completed under budget by $14,900. Town council has agreed to use the extra funds to purchase a time of day clock for the back wall of the arena, installation of a water cooler used to fill water bottles in the hallway between the dressing rooms at the north end of the arena, and to replace sand in Laurier Pilon Park with mulch. The park has had a problem with wasps in the past few years. Elle ratissera la région de l’est de l’Ontario pour distribuer 1200 cap- sules. « Nous souhaitons rencontrer entre 75 et 100 personnes âgées de 50 ans et plus qui pourraient pro"ter grandement d’une visite d’un bénévole de sa propre communauté, question de se sentir davantage en sécurité dans sa vie, en général », a-t-elle déclaré. Cette dernière indique également que 1500 personnes âgées francophones de 50 ans et plus ont divers besoins. « Le pro- gramme S.I.S. s’adaptera à cette réalité en o$rant di$érentes options de visites ou de contacts », a-t-elle ajouté. Chaque per- sonne âgée rencontrée dans le cadre du pro- gramme pourra recevoir une capsule de vie, dans laquelle se trouveront des informations sur la santé de la personne et une trousse d’information générale traitant de sécurité. C’est pour répondre à une situation urgente que la Fédération des aînés et des retraités francophones de l’Ontario (FARFO) régio- nale de l’Est et la FARFO provinciale ont mis sur pied un projet pilote dans l’Est de la province pour venir en aide aux aînés isolés. C’est sur les territoires des Comtés de Prescott-Russell et de Stormont-Dundas et Glengarry que le programme Sécurité Info Santé (S.I.S.) a été lancé lors d’une confé- rence de presse qui s’est tenue à Saint-Isi- dore, le 16 septembre dernier. Le programme S.I.S. a des objectifs bien précis. Il désire assurer une plus grande sécurité des francophones âgés de 50 ans qui vivent dans les comtés mentionnés plus haut, informer et sensibiliser la population de l’Est ontarien à l’importance de lamise en œuvre du programme S.I.S., et permettre aux premiers répondants (services d’urgence) d’avoir accès, par l’entremise d’une "ole de vie ou capsule de vie, à des renseigne- ments pertinents au sujet de la santé de la personne aînée. !e 57 Stormont Dundas & Glengarry Hi- ghlanders Army Cadet Corps began the seasonwith an open house on September 9. “It’s the regular meet and greet tonight,” said CarolynMiller, treasurer for the cadets. “It’s a lot more relaxed. Today is more like organized chaos.” “#is is our "rst recruitment day,” said commanding o!cer Captain Steve Camp- bell, “It’s a good chance tomeet parents and potential cadets, and get organized. It’s an opportunity to see what we do.” Captain Campbell said that new recruits can join at any time, not just on recruitment night. “If they want, they can just come to a meeting and see if they want to join,” said Campbell. “#e more the merrier.” Jim Mullin from the Glengarry Light In- fantry was on site to help gather interest for the re-enactment of the War of 1812 to be held September 26 and 27 at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan. “We have partnered with the cadets for the re-enact- ment,” said Mullin. “It’s a big deal. #is is the "rst one of its kind in Canada. We think it’s going to be a win-win for everyone. Kids not only get to go to cadets, it teaches them history. #is is the 75 th year for the cadets. It’s fantastic.” #e cadets will be celebrating their 75 th year on October 24. “We are looking to have a parade, and a big reunion bash,” saidMiller. “We are inviting everybody; past cadets, and o!cers. In 1975, spon- sorship was changed to Branch 472 of the Royal Canadian Legion inHawkesbury.#e designation was changed inMay 2000 to the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlan- ders Army Cadet Corps. #e cadets develop abilities in activities such as the use of maps and compasses, GPS technology, "rst-aid, camping, survival skills, canoeing trekking, mountain biking, and outdoor leadership skills. #e cadets also get involved in ceremonial military events, citizenship activities, and the War of 1812 re-enactment events at the Pioneer Village in Dunvegan. The Festival of Flavours was a tasty treat

People came out in droves to experience the annual event. Kiosks fromapproximately 65 vendors bordered the streets as visitors lined up to purchase tasty treats fromaround the globe. “I had a smoked polish sausage from Trillium Meadows,” said Tom Mal- mgren from Brownsburg. “It was fantastic. It was so good, I had two.” Food from!ailand, Greece, Russia, Ti- bet, Switzerland, India, Turkey, Argentina, and Belgium, as well as locally produced Canadian cuisine was available, much to the delight of visitors. “I had a wild boar burger,”

said Jesse Fehr from Vankleek Hill. “It was really good, juicy and very tasty.” Visitors look forward to the annual event, which is put on by the Vankleek Hill Farmers Market. Many of the market vendors had kiosks at the festival and also sell their food at themarket, Saturdaymornings, at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute. !e Festival of Flavours has been celebra- ted for 18 years, starting at Mary’s Country
Kitchen, with six vendors and 40 visitors.!e festival now receives close to 6,000 visitors each year. “Why is this such a big deal?” asked Phil Arber, producer of the event. “It’s a chance we get to show o" not only the amazing talent of our food producers, but also our town. Fairs and events are important to the livelihood of the town.”

When numerous cysts develop, the kidney can increase in size and weight, sometimes weighing several pounds each.!e cysts range in number and in size from the size of a pinhead, to the size of a grapefruit.
Cheri Barton has lived with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) for just about 15 years. PKD is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases requiring lifelong treatment. Barton organized the PKDwalk Sunday, September 13, to raise money and aware- ness about the disease, and about donating organs. She will need a kidney and liver transplant in the near future. “!is town is so supportive,” said Barton. Barton has organized the Vankleek Hill PKDwalk for the last 12 years, raising more than $172,000 for the cause, not including this year’s walk. “We typically get about $15,000 a year,” said Barton. “!at includes the $5,000 community match donation we get from Scotia Bank.” PKD is a potentially painful disease that is passed down genetically. It does not skip a generation. !e disease a"ects one in 500 people including newborns, children and adults regardless of sex, age, race or ethnic origin. PKD comes in two forms. Autosomal do- minant (ADPKD) is one of themost common life-threatening genetic diseases and there is usually a family history of the disease. Auto- somal recessive (ARPKD) is a relatively rare genetic disorder, occurring in approximately one in 20,000 individuals. It a"ects boys and girls equally and often causes signi$cant

Some symptoms of PKD include hyper- tension, high blood pressure, chronic pain or heaviness, blood in the urine, urinary tract infections, and kidney stones. Other organs can be a"ected, including the liver, spleen, pancreas, vasculature, testes, semi- nal vesicles and intestines. Parents with PKD have a 50 per cent chance of passing the disease onto their children. “I didn’t know I had PKD when we had our three children,” said Barton. “Our two daughters have it. We don’t know about our son yet.” Approximately 40 to 50 per cent of pa- tients experience kidney failure and may require a transplant. !ere is currently no cure for PKD.
