UISCE ÉIREANN UNVEILS PHOSPHOROUS RECOVERY BREAKTHROUGH

Uisce Éireann, Ireland’s water utility, has completed the country’s first phosphorous recovery facility at the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant. This groundbreaking technology aligns with the principles of the circular economy and addresses the issue of excess phosphorous in wastewater. By recovering phosphorous, a valuable resource used in agriculture, the facility promotes a more sustainable approach to wastewater treatment. The development is a significant step in safeguarding the waters of the Lower Liffey Estuary and Dublin Bay from the harmful effects of phosphorous, such as algal blooms. The innovative process allows

for the recovery of 1.3 tonnes of phosphorous per day, reducing its discharge into the bay. With an annual capacity of over 4,000 tonnes, the phosphorous recovery facility supports compliance with environmental regulations and contributes to Dublin’s population growth. Jean Hobbs, Senior Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann said, “Phosphorus, which had been discharged into the bay is now being recovered for use as a safe product which can be spread on land to help grow crops, thus removing an excess nutrient from the waste stream, and turning it into a valuable resource instead.”

Update:

PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO OFTEC IRELAND AND THE PROMOTION OF THE LIQUID FUEL INDUSTRY IN IRELAND…

L-R: Kevin McPartlan (Fuels for Ireland), David Blevings (OFTEC) and Nick Hayes (UKIFDA) outside Dáil Éireann.

AS NI AND ROI AIM TO MEET NET-ZERO TARGETS, THE RECOGNITION OF BIOFUELS AS A VIABLE HEATING SOURCE GAINS TRACTION AND SUPPORT… Biofuels gain momentum as heating solution for island of Ireland

I n Northern Ireland we have seen the Department for Economy issue an update on the Department for Energy’s 2022 ‘actions’ in March 2023. Since the Energy Strategy was published, we have a Climate Change Act passing into law last Spring and NI now has ambi- tious plans to meet its Net Zero targets by 2050. We need to focus on solutions and, at a recent meeting with DfE, they advised that they are ‘agnostic’ to overall solutions and are open to considering multiple pathways to addressing the issue and that we will

ultimately be driven by an evidence base. This is good news and instead of ‘no carbon’, they now talk about ‘low and no carbon’ options. OFTEC believes that there is no one solution for decarbonising heating and there will be a variety of options. Of course, these options and pathways must be reasonable and sustainable. We look forward to working with DfE as part of a biofuels focus group ahead of the heat consultation late this year. In the Republic, at policy level, electrification is still the only solution.

However, a number of TDs are now starting to speak out against the strategy and ask for biofuel and biogas inclusion. The latest is Barry Cowen, an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has been a TD for the Laois–Offaly constituency since the 2020 general election. He recently stated that he has doubts about the ‘version of reality’ in which Eamon Ryan and the Greens believe and say we need other solutions to meet our climate targets. Another blow to the Government’s policy is the low take up for deep retrofits. Various articles have been published

OFTEC IRELAND NEWS

pointing to low take up but the report from Deputy Denis Naughten, the former minister who introduced the home retrofit grant scheme, is probably the most damning. The article reports that he had to abandon plans to avail of retro fit works at his own house because of the cost. According to the article, Naughten said that the price quoted for retrofitting his home last year increased 53% in three months. Naughten is quoted saying that “the price was up 33% but the cost to me was up 53% because the grant doesn’t increase with the cost of the works.” One of the stumbling blocks we have in the Republic is that biofuels are not recognised in Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP), the software used to produce Building Energy Rating Certificates (BER), similar to the EPC produced in the UK. The DEAP software is managed by the

Sustainable Energy Authority for Ireland, and OFTEC have been lobbying them behind the scenes. The good news is that they have agreed to a face-to-face meeting in June and we are very hopeful that, with the mounting evidence base that modern synthetic and biofuels are now in such abundance, (and recognised as a heating source in the UK SAP Model), Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) will be recognised and permitted as part of the DEAP procedure going forwards. The SEAI’s stated mission is to be at the heart of delivering Ireland’s energy revolution. It is increasingly clear that HVO has a role to play in that revolution.

It has now been clearly demonstrated that biofuels such as HVO offer a more affordable, accessible and highly effective alternative to mechanisms such as deep retrofitting which currently receive an unwarranted, disproportionate amount of politicians’ attention. Just as it is currently being done in the area of transport, biofuels including HVO hold the potential to have an immensely positive impact in reducing the carbon emissions caused by heating. They can, and OFTEC firmly believes that they can and will play a key role in helping Ireland achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Watch this space.

“Biofuels offer a more affordable, accessible and highly effective alternative to deep retrofitting, which currently receives disproportionate attention from politicians.”

FAN COIL SYSTEMS

WITH A MOVE AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL ANGLED OR CLOSED COUPLED FAN COIL UNITS, MARK MOGEY, HEAD OF OEM SALES UK AND

ROI, DISCUSSES HOW NEW UNIT DESIGNS CAN HELP MAKE INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE EASIER… Prioritising design of fan coil units

Mark Mogey, Altecnic.

A fan coil system is a

THE BENEFITS OF PRE- ASSEMBLY Pre-assembled kits, unlike buying

to each fan coil. The water loops are insulated, thus providing heating and cooling with water at a very low transportation or pump work cost. As a result, fan coils are an energy- efficient system choice for a range of building types. However, they are a complex and timely installation for many installers and require a great understanding of the make-up of a fan coil unit to ensure that they work effectively. HOW CAN DESIGN ASSIST AN INSTALLER? Dealing with fan coils and air handling units can be a tough matter without the right equipment. Having a pre- assembled kit for terminal units, which is compact and composed of all devices needed for the operation, can make the job easier for the installer and contribute to quick commissioning and maintenance.

decentralized HVAC system with fan coils, or terminal units,

at or near the occupied space serviced by central heating and cooling plants. A fan coil system can be used in many building types, including hotels, multi- family residentials, offices, schools and office blocks. They are made up of an enclosure, fan and motor, coil with drain pan and a filter. Fan coils come in a wide range of configurations including the wall, ceiling exposed, horizontal ceiling concealed, stacked and large capacity. Terminal units heat or cool by using hot water from a central heating plant and chilled water from a central chiller plant. The fan is powered by a small electric motor that circulates room air through the filter and coil. Four pipe fan coil systems have two water loops (hot and chilled water) throughout the building connected

components separately, assure both the installer and end-user. Through design specification, pre-assembled fan coil units can be custom-made to include specific connection types and flow rates in a single assembly. This simplifies the design process for the specifiers and subsequently saves time for the installer. Due to the design of pre-assembled kits, with all elements of the kit being readily joined and the kit requiring a minimum number of additional joints, the likelihood of leakages is reduced massively. This generates a cost-benefit, with a reduction in both water usage and potential maintenance costs. To further ensure peace of mind, the pre-assembled fan coil units are often pre-tested to certify their standard. When this is done, the quality and performance of the fan coil unit can be

equal percentage control and full stroke modulation. Furthermore, a unique advantage is that the valve does not drop authority even at a setting different than 100% open position, thanks to its special internal configuration. Two three-way valves allow easy periodic flushing of the system, and an integrated cartridge strainer will protect the terminal unit to always ensure maximum performance. Such valves can also be used for bypass or isolation of the unit. A calibrated Venturi flow measurement device will allow an easy and precise commissioning phase, thanks also to the user-friendly setting of the Caleffi PICV 145 series. The multiple-size connections (1/2’’, 3/4‘’, 1”, 1 ¼”) and the huge available range of PICV make the Caleffi 149 series suitable for all systems. The possibility of adding flexible hoses increases its universality of installation. All the levers and ports

ENSURED QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE

Caleffi offers a pre-assembled fan coil unit, the 149 Series. The linear design of the unit (pictured) allows for quick and easy installation, with the high- quality standard of Caleffi products also incorporated in the componentry of this kit. Energy efficiency is ensured as the pre-formed insulation, made of rigid EPP material, prevents condensation issues, whilst also complying with fire regulations. The dynamic balancing of the system is ensured by the Caleffi diaphragm-type PICV 145 series, which can be equipped with an ON/OFF or a modulating 0-10 V actuator. The inner dynamic element can easily be replaced to ensure long life for the whole assembly. Caleffi PICV features

are installed on the side of the kit to make it symmetrical for universal installation (the kit can be reversed, so that it always matches the pipe configuration of the unit).

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

With fan coil units being a step towards energy efficiency, it is of great importance that their installation, maintenance and commissioning are made as easy as possible for the installer. Caleffi developed the 149 Series to make installer’s life easier whilst keeping their top-quality standards that are recognised the world over.

SUSTAINABLE HEATING INNOVATION BROUGHT TO YOU VIA HEVAC’S STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH MAXA, A RENOWNED GLOBAL LEADER IN ENVIRONMENTAL COMFORT TECHNOLOGY...

Hevac and MAXA – leading sustainable heating solutions

A s exclusive MAXA distributors in Ireland, Hevac has made a wealth of innovative sustainable heating products and solutions available to the Irish installer market, to help work towards lowering carbon emissions. Hevac’s Specification Manager, Paul Devereux – responsible for its commercial and industrial range of heat pumps and chillers – explained, “Today, it is all about making the primary energy source of buildings environmentally friendly while, at the same time, reducing their carbon footprint. In MAXA, we have a range of options that deliver 100% to that brief, thanks to continuous investment in R&D that results in a constant stream of innovative products. “Today’s marketplace also demands products and system solutions that are energy efficient, sustainable and contribute to the circular economy. Here again, MAXA excels. For instance, with the MAXA air-cooled liquid chiller range featuring a reversible heat pump for outdoor installation, the ecological refrigerant R32 is used. Other features include the scroll compressor and axial fan. Meanwhile, the installation of a supplementary exchanger working

as a condenser in parallel to the air conditioning battery allows for sanitary hot water production independent from the unit working mode. “Another example is the i-HP V5H R32 inverter heat pump range. These units reach high SEER and SCOP values, thanks to the incorporation of DC inverter scroll compressors, EC fan exchangers and their high efficiency. “They deliver high comfort levels with low energy consumption and can produce hot water up to 60°C, even in the coldest conditions. Test data is available for both low (35°C) and high (55°C) temperature applications, average climate conditions.” The change to R290 in 2023 enables MAXA air source heat pumps to achieve higher temperatures while also maintaining high efficiencies, as R290 is a natural refrigerant with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Designed for outdoor installation (with an indoor ducted version available on request), the structure consists of high-thickness profiles made of hot-dip galvanised steel sheets. They are coated with polyester powder and a RAL 7035 bush-hammered finish that is resistant

to weathering (classification of corrosivity similar to C3 according to EN ISO 12944- 2:2017). The removable panels allow for easy maintenance inside the refrigeration circuit and the hydraulic circuit. Additional options available include super silencing, onboard inverter pump/buffer tank and a full range of BMS connectivity. Paul concluded, “The current MAXA range is ideally suited to the Irish market, and we have supplied numerous projects throughout the country, including nursing homes, primary care centres, commercial buildings, leisure facilities and public libraries. “Where the brief calls for energy-efficient and sustainable heating and cooling, in MAXA we have the perfect solution, no matter what the application.”

“If you have an overflow or a small leak under the floor that hasn’t been detected, the Imrita will sound an alarm and highlight the reason why.”

WIRELESS SAFETY In addition to the valve itself, Imrita Alarm also offers the option of wireless probes that can be positioned in vulnerable areas around the property, such as kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. “Seven probes in total can be installed with one Imrita valve, with a range of 25m for each. As soon as the probe gets in contact with water, it will send an alarm from the probe itself, so you know in which area of the property the fault is and will also highlight an indicator in the valve to show one of the probes has been activated. Then, the valve will immediately shut itself off,” Peter explained. The probes also remove the necessity to run unsightly cables around the property and their batteries have been specified to last up to one and a half years. The great news is that all these features in the Imrita Alarm can be controlled remotely by using the E-water mobile app for the water leak detector interface. The alarm also comes with a three-pin plug power adaptor, a battery backup for the main unit and a remote key fob to switch the valve on and off.

exceeds the volume, the valve will shut off. The valve will also turn off if there is a sudden burst pipe. “These features are commissioned on site, according to the number of bathrooms, the water usage and the amount of time the building is in use, if it is a business, for example,” Peter explained. “We can program how long a water flow can carry on for without stopping. In my own house, I have this set for 45 minutes. So, after 45 minutes, if the water flow continues, the valve will shut down.” Another Imrita Alarm key feature is a microleakage setting, set to detect small leaks as low as five litres per hour. Peter commented, “If you have an overflow or a small leak under the floor that hasn’t been detected, the Imrita will sound an alarm and highlight the reason why, for example, if the water flow exceeds the set amount of time”. The alarm is also very handy to protect the property while the homeowner is on holiday - it is possible to program the Imrita to shut the valve off after a set period of days. Then, with a simple push of a button, it is easy to open the valve again when the proprietors return from a well-deserved rest.

Key features of the Imirta alarm...

• Alerts the homeowner to a water leak within the property via wireless sensors throughout the house. • Turns the water off to prevent water damage. • Its holiday mode automatically senses reduced usage and turns the water off. • Features a key fob to turn on and off. • Offers remote control via mobile app.

WITH UNLIMITED COMBINATIONS OF CABINETS, BASINS, HANDLES AND COLOURS, THE LARGA MODULAR FURNITURE RANGE FROM NIKO BATHROOMS ALLOWS CUSTOMERS TO BE CREATIVE IN THEIR BATHROOM DESIGN… Must-see versatility

T he Niko Bathrooms team has and the reaction from retailers, merchants and bathrooms showrooms nationwide couldn’t be better. “There has been great instant feedback from retailers who have displays in their showrooms,” celebrated Alan Maguire, Niko Bathrooms Retail Sales Director, Leinster. “If you haven’t seen it yet, LARGA is a must-see”. Aptly named, LARGA is the Spanish word for ‘long’, making it synonymous with the scope of this new range that offers homeowners the versatility to extend their design options to limitless combinations. LARGA has been inspired by the knowledge that customers want to be creative within recently launched LARGA, their new modular bathroom furniture range, their bathroom space, without the need to compromise on design styles, whether they have restricted space or in some cases, too much space and don’t know how to optimise it. “This range will allow people to express their own personal choice; it’s all about combination and personalisation,” commented Cathy Orr, Group Marketing Manager at Niko Bathrooms. “Sometimes people like a furniture piece in the

showroom, for example, but it is not available in the size they are looking for. This range provides more freedom of choice for bathrooms of any size.” THE MODULAR JOURNEY LARGA brings the customer through a journey of selection and choice, step by step. It starts with selecting the furniture piece and then making the ever-important colour choice from a refined palette reflecting the latest in design trends and popular tones: white, grey or powder blue. “It is possible even to mix and match cabinet and unit colours for a patchwork design,” Cathy explained. The countertops are available in white, grey, blue, white marble and black marble, and in as many as a variety of length options: 60, 80, 100, 140, 160 and 180cm. The next step is deciding on the washbasin style, with the option of an inset or countertop model. Then, the customer can complement their furniture by choosing cabinets and brassware, including finishings in black, chrome and brass.

the room an expressive, dynamic feel and make it far from dull. Well-chosen furniture handles and feet from the collection are the perfect choice. PEACE OF MIND The elegantly designed LARGA basins feature ultra-thin 5-6mm edges, but their durability is enhanced by ROCKLITE ceramic, which is strong yet ductile and has unrivalled impact resistance. The furniture tops are manufactured with AQUASAFE technology. Thanks to an additional anti-fungal impregnation and a modified density of the board, these elements are more resistant to water absorption and humidity in the bathroom.
