Dragi gosti,

Dear Guests,

We have just celebrated our 90th birthday at Air Serbia, making us one of the oldest airlines in the world. When our carrier was established, back in 1927, few people could have predicted how dramatically aviation would change the nature of travel. At that time it took five days to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a liner. Now, 90 years on, we can fly you non-stop from Belgrade to New York in a matter of hours. This bumper edition of Elevate has a special retrospective dedicated to our 90th anniversary that looks back at the history of Air Serbia and the growth of civil aviation in Serbia. It’s a fascinating read that takes you through

The first 90 years are behind us and I am excited for what we will achieve going forward

the early attempts to take flight in Serbia (such as the story of Kalfa Manojlo who jumped off a Belgrade roof in 1841 strapped to a pair of wings) all the way to the establishment and rise of Air Serbia since 2013 to now. To pay homage to our rich lineage, we have also recently unveiled special branding on all our aircraft, which you might have noticed before boarding this flight. Our 21 jets and turboprops now feature a commemorative decal incorporating the official logos of our predecessors - Aeroput, JAT and Jat

Airways - around our emblem of the double-headed eagle. Over the past nine decades, changes in air travel have been driven by new technology, whether that’s through engines and aircraft that can fly long-haul, or the ability to check-in online and have your boarding pass sent to your mobile, which you can now do with Air Serbia. As we celebrate our 90th milestone, our focus is on making use of these innovative technologies to grow our operations and enhance your experience even further. In this regard, I’m happy to announce that Air Serbia has successfully finished upgrading ten Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft with award-winning Recaro seats. Through clever modern design, these seats are able to provide more living space to our guests while taking up less physical space in the cabins, enabling us to install extra rows of seating and increase capacity on our European flights, right in time for the summer holidays. In addition, guests flying on these aircraft can look forward to using Air Serbia’s free Elevate Play service, which allows movies, TV shows and music to be streamed to personal devices through Wi-Fi. I hope you enjoy the summer and have a great flight today with Air Serbia. The first 90 years are behind us and I am excited for what our carrier will achieve going forward.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. We can find many meanings in Leonardo Da Vinci’s words, and all of them are brilliant. It is sometimes worth standing still for one reason – to gaze high upwards. In the sky all sorts of miracles are possible. We watched pilots from around the world who had come to Serbia to compete in the Paragliding World Cup in Niš.

Na putu / On the road

ŠTA UVEK NOSIŠ SA SOBOM? WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS CARRY WITH YOU? ANĐELKA PRPIĆ, GLUMICA / ACTRESS

ŠTA VOLIŠ U BEOGRADU? Najviše volim Dorćol i Balkansku ulicu. Posle toga sam tu i živela, maštala sam o tome da će me Vesna Dedić jednog dana pozvati u svoju emisiju. I eto, danas moj muž drži restoran baš u toj ulici. Vezana sam i za Zvezdaru, tamo živimo. WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN BELGRADE? I most love Dorćol and Balkanska Street. As a girl it was there that I prepared for college, for acting. After that I also lived there, and I fantasised about Ve- sna Dedić one day inviting me onto her show. And at it turns out, today my husband has a restaurant in that very street. I’m also connected to Zvezdara, which is where we live.

KUDA VOLIŠ DA PUTUJEŠ? Svuda i uvek. Inače, relativ- no kasno sam počela da putujem. I to je bilo to, srpski raj, šta ćeš više! WHERE DO YOU LIKE TRAVELLING TO?

Everywhere and always. There are a lot of places that I like on this planet of ours – Lisbon, Spain, Mexico, Cu- ba etc., but above all Italy. There I find everything pretty, in both

big cities and small towns, whe- re I can walk, sit, drive ... whate- ver I want. I actually started tra- velling relatively late. The first time

Everything I own! My suitcase is nev- er big enough, because, you know, I need some- thing comfortable during the day, I need a ward- robe for photographing, and in the evening I have to dress nicer for dinner. In my hand luggage I always have some toy for my son Jakša, disinfectant cleans- er, dental floss and a fan. There is also an obligatory vanity case! I can’t live without foundation. I think we all need to financially support the man who invented liquid foundation. And not only him, but also his close and distant relatives. Let God revive them. Since I started taking care of my diet, I al- so always carry healthy snacks with me, like al- monds, gluten-free chocolate, dried fruits with cereals ... And yes, whenever I go on the road I’m afraid I will lose my wallet. That’s why I always place my money in several dif- ferent places.

I boarded a plane was when I was in colle- ge. My parents always took us to Greece, tho- ugh of course by car. We spent our winters on Kopaonik, because the bank where my mother wor- ked had a resort there. And that was that, Serbian he- aven, what mo- re could you want?!

attraction for youngsters Every July since 2005, the Belgian town of Boom, located about 30 kilometres from Brussels, has hosted one of the country’s biggest music festivals, “Tomorrowland”. Apart from its excellent performers, critics consider it the pinnacle of creativity in the festival world due to its unusual stages. The organisers are preparing surprises again this year, which is why, alongside Serbia’s “EXIT” festival, “Tomorrowland” is considered the world’s most famous electronic music festival. This year’s festival will be held during the last two weekends in July. Zurich Concerts of the biggest European stars Zurich’s “Live at Sunset” festival is one of Europe’s top summer events, with every year guaranteeing a good time and concerts of great stars. This year, visitors will be able to enjoy the concert of the legendary Elton John on 12 th July, with the rock band “Placebo” performing a day earlier. During the festival, which runs from 6 th to 22 nd July, concerts will also be held by the Italian pop singer Marco Mengoni and the British pop-jazz musician Jamie Cullum. Festival tickets can be purchased via the festival’s official website.

INTERVJU: VLADIMIR VELIČKOVIĆ, SLIKAR I AKADEMIK INTERVIEW: VLADIMIR VELIČKOVIĆ, PAINTER AND ACADEMIC SVE ŠTO RADIM JEDAN JE VELIKI AUTOPORTRET EVERYTHING I DO IS A GREAT SELF-PORTRAIT

Tekst / Words: Ana Vodinelić Fotografije / Photography: Žarko Vijatović, Vladan Filipović Uvek me je više privlačila ljudska drama.

I’ve always been more attracted to human drama. Emotions are essential, dialogue is essential. Indifference towards a work is equivalent to defeat for the one who created it I t was back in 1966 that he arrived on a “temporary residence” stay in Paris, without any firm intention of staying at all costs. Half a century has passed and today there is no reason not to see that time as “lasting” ... He is a member of Ser- bian and French academies, a painter who conquered France, but also the rest of the world with his extraordinary talent. After half a century in Paris, Vladimir Veličković now lives between Serbia and the French capital. But he doesn’t yearn for his home- land – it is within him. - I don’t miss Serbia at all. I am always with it, in it, in my Belgrade. I live and work on two absolutely equal tracks. I am literally cut in half. And I’m very satisfied with that status. I come at least four or five times a year, for short but very stimulating stays, in every respect. A new gallery will open with my exhibition in Belgrade in autumn. I will present more previously unseen works... What are you doing now? - I work every day, continuously, on a few pictures and drawings. I also recently returned to sculpture, after a long break. My latest paintings and drawings are the- matically connected. They are character- ised, primarily I mean the paintings, by their grey-ashen colouring. A human figure, a man, is present. And the spaces - landscapes with fires, ravens, desolation and destruc- tion are still current.

– Srbija mi uopšte ne nedostaje, stalno sam s njom, u njoj, u mom Be- ogradu. Živim i radim na apsolutno dva ravnopravna koloseka. Bukvalno sam prepolovljen. I prezadovoljan sam tim statusom. Nedav- no sam se vratio i skulpturi, posle du- ge pauze. Poslednje slike i crteži su tematski povezani. A i prostori-pejzaži s požarima,

How do you choose the topics? - My topics are everything we are or what we witness on a daily basis. I listen and follow what is happening on this troubled planet of ours. We are inundated with all sorts of information. I cannot, as a painter, fail to comment on all of these events in my own way, to react with drawings, paintings etc. That is my moral duty and obligation. You paint and draw several works si- multaneously. Has it always been li- ke that? - Always. One serves the other, feeding each other mutually. Drawing and painting are inseparable, at least for me. Drawing serves the painting; without drawings it is not possible to create something worth- while. That goes for all disciplines equally. Have you destroyed any of your works? - Errors are inevitable and should be eliminated. Bad drawings, bad paintings, are your worst enemies. It happens that things don’t go the way you wish. Then the punishment is paid: tearing, cutting... and throwing away. That’s a better and saf- er way – for the future. Your works contain brutality, pessimi- sm. It is as though all the work hurts... - I look around myself; I try to figure out why the world is like this, and not different. I’ve always been more attracted to human drama. From my artistic beginnings, during

I listen and follow what is happening on this troubled planet of ours. I cannot, as a painter, fail to react with drawings or paintings

gavranima, pustoši i razaranjima još su aktuelni. Kako birate teme? Slikate i crtate nekoliko dela istovremeno. Oduvek tako? – Oduvek. Uvek me je više privlačila ljudska drama.

Zbog njegove ana- tomije i morfologije.

all these years, nothing has changed signifi- cantly and given me the right to speak about that. Still life is not my subject. The sugges- tion that my work is pessimistic, even mor- bid, is a mistaken interpretation. Emotions are essential, dialogue is essential. If that is not there, which happens, indifference to- wards a work is equivalent to defeat for the one who created it. Your oeuvre contains mainly male nudes, while it used to have fema- les. Why is this form no longer pre- sent in your works? Is the male nude synonymous with Christ? - Because of the function that my fig- ures have in paintings and drawings, the male body suits me more, due to its anat- omy and morphology. And we can’t escape ourselves, wheth- er we want to or not. Everything you do is a great self-portrait that takes on differ- ent transformations over time, which cor- responds to a certain evolution. It is desir- able for that evolution to be continuous, if it exists at all. And it should exist. As for Christ in all this? Well, perhaps... That is man, primarily. Us. How many hours a day do you spend in your studio? - All day, every day. It’s about time, and it escapes, flees... it’s elusive - revolt- ingly elusive. When it comes to visitors to the studio, this is a big problem. There are more of those who want to see you than those who you want to see. The selection is harsh, but necessary. Again it is a matter of time. It should be known that painters are terribly alone, alone with their torments. And that solitude is essential. In truth, you have a great interlocutor with what you are doing... The question is whether such and such an interlocutor is enough? Let’s say that it is. Optimism is absent from your work. Have you ever lost hope and had a dilemma about whether to continue pursuing a career in art? - I have never asked myself this ques- tion. Faith in yourself and what you do is unimaginable happiness and satisfaction.

Ceo dan, svaki dan, samujem u ateljeu All day, every day, I am alone in my studio

Crtež služi slici, bez crteža nije moguće nešto valjano stvoriti Drawing serves the painting; without a drawing it is not possible to create something worthwhile

That is so and no other way. Doubts are essential because they force you into all sorts of possible questioning of yourself, and they are daily. It is good that it is so. How has the City of Light changed sin- ce the time you started a new chap- ter in your life there? - It has changed a lot. There was more patience, we were much fewer; there was more potential space that you should “con- quer”and in which to find your place.Time was never such a beast; it was never in abun-

dance, but it existed, and wasn’t so mad- deningly elusive as it is today. And at the social and communica- tional level; artists now and then in Paris? - There was much more curiosity. And contacts, meetings and socialising were commonplace. Young people today are not in a very enviable situation. They need to fight, requiring a lot of energy, ambition. The way we communicate today has expe- rienced huge advances. And that is a sig-

nificant difference compared to the time when I arrived. That essential communi- cation can happen very quickly, and may- be never. How would you assess the Serbian culture scene? - Culture is in the background in Serbia. It does not receive the attention it deserves. The creative capacity is huge, and miracles happen despite the neglect. I notice a lot of energy, which is primarily possessed by the young generation, who fight as they

| 31

are able and know how to maintain that dynamic. The results are more than visible. Where do you see the key moves that will benefit Serbian culture? - In order to improve the situation, the budget (which is never enough) is al- ways the most important factor. Culture is an orphan of the budget, but it is only through culture, and never through pol- itics, that we can announce to ourselves and the world what and who we are. And that is something we can and must do. And those who lead Serbia must understand that. Politics and politicians pass and dis- appear never to return. All that remains is culture, which gives its stamp and creates the identity of a nation. You were decorated with the Legion of Honour medal ten years ago and have achieved repute at home and abroad. With your opus you’ve ne- ver adulated anyone. How challen- ging and difficult was it to become a “success in life”? - I’ve never made compromises. Lit- erally never, and nor did I have a need for that. As for adulation!? Dirty word. Hu- miliating. Not at any price. Everything I have done has been done with my to- tal engagement, my great (and still pres- ent) ambition, not cowering away from any kind of obstacle. I have to admit, and I’m not ashamed, that there were none. Maybe they will turn up in this little time that I have left. What do your sons do? - The older one, Vuk, is referred to in modern parlance as a “multimedia artist”, primarily a painter. He lives and works be- tween Belgrade and Paris. Marko is also an artist, a painter – he draws lines. He lives and works in New York. Your father, Dušan, wanted you to have a safe profession, which is why you studied architecture... -Perhapsmy“waytobecomingapaint- er” would have been faster if I’d studied painting, but at no instant did I regret that studying architecture slowed me down a little when it came to some basic knowhow, primarily in the “craft”. I compensated for that slowing down very quickly. I follow everything that happens in architecture and I’m fascinated with creations that are full of imagination and technical virtuos- ity, and the results are absolutely amaz- ing. I must admit that I’ve never regretted the fact I’m not an architect, but I believe I would have been a good architect, even better than good. Which colours would you use to pa- int Serbia today? - Once with a swirling magenta. But that is just a wish… at least for now.

nezamisliva sreća i zadovoljstvo. Umetnici nekad i sad u Parizu?

smo i ko smo. A to možemo i mora- mo. Politika i političari prolaze i bespovratno nestaju. Jedino ostaje kultura, koja daje pečat i stvara iden- titet jednog naroda. Deset godina ste nosilac Legije časti. Priznato ste ime u domo- vini i inostranstvu. – Kompromise nikada nisam pra- vio. Bukvalno nikada, a nisam imao ni potrebe. A o dodvoravanju?! Ružne li reči. Ponižavajuće. Ni po koju cenu. Sve sto sam uradio, uradio sam svojim to- talnim angažovanjem, velikom (i još prisutnom) ambicijom, ne ustuknuv- ši pred bilo kojom preprekom. Živi i radi u Njujorku. Kojim bojama biste naslikali Sr- biju danas? – Jednom zakovitlanom, purpur- nocrvenom. Ali to je samo želja. Bar zasad.
