Don Boudria cheers on Justin Trudeau’s leadership challenge

After the death of Trudeau the father, there were some who urged son, Justin, to take the initiative and run for leadership of the party. He opted, though, to continue pursuing his career in education and did not enter politics until later when he won the Québec riding of Papineau for the federal Liberals in 2008, defeating the incumbent separatist MP, and became the Liberal critic for youth, post-secondary education, and amateur sports issues. During his time in Parliament there were other attempts to get

“It’s not magic,” Boudria said. “The father was a good prime minister, not because of ‘magic’, but because he was a good man.” Boudria noted that the senior Trudeau was a strong political leader whose policies and actions were always of interest to voters of all classes, regardless whether they supported him or not. Other politicians, he observed, might be good managers but what they say or do may not always be part of the “Tim Horton table talk” the morning after they make an announcement. “People have a craving for strong leadership,” Boudria said. “We don’t have that now.” He also dismisses the claims of some pundits that Trudeau’s name will prove a political handicap. “How could it?” he said, laughing. “He’s a brilliant young man.” Continuing on about the strength of the Trudeau name, Boudria recalled an interviewhehadwithaQuébecois journalist soon after Trudeau’s leadership bid announcement. The reporter questioned

whether or not being Pierre Trudeau’s son might not hurt both the Liberal party’s and Justin Trudeau’s chances of voter support in Québec. Boudria cited the last federal election campaign results for PrimeMinister Trudeau. “In Québec his (Justin’s) father took 74 of 75 seats,” Boudria said, adding this was during a time when the separatist movement was still strong in the province’s political scene. “Others tried to demonize him in that last election but it didn’t work.” In the current leadership campaign Trudeau faces competition from at least half a dozen other challengers, including Dr. Marc Garneau, Canada’s most famous astronaut. Boudria noted that Trudeau’s concerns in the campaign and for the country center around creating unity and also the need to inspire young people to be more active in building their country. “Right now 70 per cent of young Canadians don’t even vote,” Boudria said. “He wants to ensure that everyone everywhere is represented.”

GREGGCHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Sarsfield | Don Boudria is not just happy that Justin Trudeau wants to follow in his famous father’s footsteps. He is ecstatic. The son of Pierre Eliot Trudeau announced at the end of September his intention to run for leadership of the federal Liberal party. That announcement was rock music to Boudria’s ears. “I am very, very

him involved in leadership campaigns but he declined until this year. “I wasn’t the first but I was one of the early people urging him on,” Boudria said, regarding his own involvement Trudeau’s

pleased,” he said during a phone interview over the Thanksgiving long weekend. The former Liberal MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell is one of the surviving senior Liberal veterans from the Trudeau Era of Canadian politics when Pierre Trudeau led the party and the country through

decision to enter the current leadership race. “My fear was that he would decide not to run. He took the entire summer to decide whether he would or not. It’s great news for the party and good news for the country.” Boudria was with Trudeau in Montréal during the Oct. 2 rally when he announced his intention to seek the party leadership post. The veteran ex-MP is now part of the Trudeau campaign advisory group. He dismissed suggestions that some of the party faithful hope the “magic” of the Trudeau name can prove as successful for the son as it did for the father.

various crises like the FLQ kidnappings, the limited introduction of wage-and-price controls to combat inflations, creation of a National Energy Policy which resulted in the development of PetroCanada and spurred new development in the Alberta oil patch, the creation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the re-patriation of the BNA Act and the Constitution, and the first referendum battles with Québec separatism.

caucus members. Caucus members may have shared informal observations about outdoor issues and concerns while waiting for strikes on their lines and then engaging in more formal discussions later when they returned to Parliament Hill for their regular office hours. “This was very much an (amiable) event,” he said. “It was about fishing, about enjoy- ing the outdoors, and getting to know each other.” Lemieux heard reports that some caucus members hauled in a few of the local bass, perch and other sports fish before leaving the river and gathering at the RiverRock Inn for a late afternoon/early evening barbe- cue. While the MP issued the invitation for the “outdoor” caucus to enjoy a Rockland fishing experience, he wasn’t able to share in the fun, though he was on hand to wel- come everyone back to the dock. “I was not able to go fishing with them,” Lemieux said, with a chuckle.“I had other rid- ing engagements and business to attend to.” The MP hopes to see the“outdoor”caucus and other all-party focus groups make their way to Rockland and other parts of the rid- ing again in future. Meanwhile he is stuck with a fish story about the ones he never even got a chance to let get away.

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Rockland | Local fishing guides had a chance to impress some special guests when the federal government’s “outdoor” caucus motored into town at the invita- tion of MP Pierre Lemieux. The September 22 weekend fishing trip was a combination brainstorming session and social gathering for the 15 MPs and oth- er senior government officials who make up the special issue caucus. During a phone interview Lemieux estimated that between 40 to 50 people took part in the event, in- cluding the government representatives, support staff, local guides and others. “The ‘outdoor’ caucus is for MPs who want to be focused on the outdoors and its is- sues,” said Lemieux, Conservative MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell., adding that the caucus is an all-party group, including MPs from both sides of the House of Commons, such as the NDP’s Dennis Bevington. “These (all-party) caucuses are very useful for focusing on areas of interest and devel- oping working relationships between MPs,” Lemieux said. “I’ve been to countries where the MPs don’t do this kind of thing.” The main focus for the weekend, Lemieux noted, was a relaxed get-together for the

Unfair treatment I have been a long time reader of the Vision (moved here in October of 1992) and it used to address the French and English population almost equally. However, over the last few years I have noticed that articles that deal with local politics are usually in French only. We can always find Federal and Provincial articles in English but the local stuff is not be- ing reported in English. Point in fact, the three articles in the October 4, 2012 edition. The first deals with the Plantagenet asphalt plant, the second deals with the Stormont South linguistic equality situation and the third deals with the Clarence Point ferry. However, you were sure to include, in English, the story about the counties collecting the old peat bogs. This article is of interest to only a few people who own the peat bogs or whose property abuts them. Further I have noticed that sometimes when you provide information on the bus scheduling or price changes it is in French only. Bruce Bauer Rockland OPINION Pierre Lemieux welcomed MPs from all political parties to Rockland on Sunday. Al- most 15 MPs and their families joined the MP Outdoor Caucus for a day of fishing on the Ottawa River followed by a BBQ at the River Rock Inn. In the photo are Pierre, MP Rick Norlock, MP Cathy McLeod, MP Dennis Bevington, Daniel Proulx of Orleans Boat World and Sports (which provided many of the boats), and MP Bob Zimmer.

that night.” The burglary took place in a second- floor apartment located over the Zip Printing office on Giroux Street in Rock- land. The woman and child were away for the Thanksgiving long weekend but a friend was checking on the premises ev- ery day. All was in order in the apartment on Sun- day at 9 p.m. when the friend last checked the place. The woman came home in the mid-afternoon Thanksgiving Monday to pick up an item for the family supper. She found the apartment ransacked with vari- ous items strewn about on the floor.

Police sent over a forensics expert to dust for fingerprints and collect other crime scene evidence. They are now wait- ing for a complete list of missing items. So far the woman has confirmed that her laptop and desktop computer setup are both gone. The desktop computer hard drive contained irreplaceable fam- ily photos. Also missing is a Wii electronic game set, some pieces of jewellery, a bag of used clothing destined for the thrift shop, and a collection of Barbie dolls and related items, totaling at least 50 pieces. Anyone with information on the bur- glary can call the Rockland OPP station.
