Welcome message

Avgust 2023.

August 2023

Dragi putnici,

Dear passengers,

Stigli smo do mnogima omiljenog letnjeg meseca – avgusta , kad su tople boje i energija leta na vrhuncu. Taj mesec je idealan za odmor, uživanje uz more i dobru knjigu. Uživajte u letu i srećan put.

One of the favourite months for many peo- ple – August , when warm colours and summer ener- gy reach their peak – has now arrived. August is the ide- al month for summer holidays, enjoying yourself by the sea and having a good read. Statistics show that peo- ple tend to read the most during their summer holidays. Did you know that many countries celebrate Book Lovers Day on 9 th August? Watermelon Day is also celebrated in August, which makes perfect sense considering that watermelons are among the best summer treats. We have dedicated this edition of Elevate to the ma- gnificent Adriatic coast. One popular Belgrade musician wrote a verse that perhaps best describes all our Adria- tic destinations. The song goes like this: “I’ll take you to a remote place, between mountains and the sea”, and we would encourage you to take advantage of our dire- ct flights to Tivat, Dubrovnik, Split, Rijeka, Zadar and Pula, allowing you to quickly and comfortably reach the Adria- tic coast. Italy also has a coastline on the Adriatic. Have you ever visited Venice or Bari? Venice needs no introducti- on, with everything probably having already been said or written about this city, so we can only recommend it as an ever-attractive destination. We believe that Bari is a gem of the Adriatic coast that you simply must explore. We have flights to Bari three times a week, every Mon- day, Thursday and Sunday, which makes it an ideal desti- nation for an extended weekend break. In addition to our scheduled and seasonal destinati- ons, the details of which are available towards the end of the magazine, we also provide charter flights during the summer season, in partnership with travel agents. From April to October, we fly to some of your favourite holiday resorts in Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt and Greece. This year, we also launched flights for the first time to Marsa Ma- truh, a popular resort in Egypt. Unlike Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh, both of which are located on the Red Sea, Marsa Matruh is located on the Mediterranean coast and is just 300 kilometres from the beautiful Alexandria. Whether you want to explore new cities that you’ve never been to before or to visit one of your most beloved destinations, it will be our pleasure to be part of your tra- vels. Air Serbia is by your side year-round. Enjoy your flight and have a nice trip,

Pored beogradskog aerodroma, srpska nacionalna avio-kompanija čarter-letove rea- lizuje i sa Aerodroma „Konstantin Veliki“ u Ni- šu. Assos The ancient Greek coastal town of Assos is another site in Çanakkale province to be inclu- ded on UNESCO’s World Herita- ge List, and it is perhaps one of the most scenic ancient cities in modern Türkiye. It is situa- ted on a rocky hill some 17 kilo- metres south of the district of Ayvacık. Aristotle arrived in As - sos in 348 BC and established a philosophical school where he taught for three years. The acropolis hosts the earliest Do- ric temple in Anatolia, a Tem- ple of Athena, fortification walls and a Turkish mosque from the early period. You can follow the path leading to the lower city and visit the agora, the gymna- sium, and enjoy great views of Lesbos from the theatre. With its beautiful nature and ancient ruins, Assos is a regular back- drop used for filming Turkish TV series, while it is an alluring spot for divers thanks to its cle- an seas and rich underwater world. Bozcaada Located near Çanakkale, at the mouth of the Dardanelles Stra- its, Bozcaada is Türkiye’s third largest island, covering an area of 40 square kilometres. Upon arrival on the island, you are greeted by the castle overloo- king the harbour. You can wan- der its narrow streets between beautiful and colourful houses, then head to the Çiçek Patis- serie for some Kavala cookies, one of the famous delicacies of the island, or to try ice cre- am flavoured with the famous local fragrant lavender. If you’re there at sunset, head to the Po- lente Lighthouse to enjoy some wonderful views. Wine seems as plentiful as water on this island and a tour reveals many vineyards and wine cellars. There are good sand beaches at Ayazma, Poyraz and İğdelik, while jazz lovers will enjoy Sep- tember’s annual festival.

Çanakkale is located at the en- trance of the Dardanelles Stra- it, which connects the Aege- an and Marmara seas. It is a place that has welcomed lea- ders, commanders, warriors, artists, philosophers, explorers, and poets. The lands of the le- gendary Trojan War and Darda- nelles Campaign are located on both sides of the Dardanelles Strait, which would much la- ter divide the city of Istanbul to form a city that separates Eu- rope and Asia. Troy is thought to have been located at the edge of the bay where the rivers Karamenderes and Dümrek reach the Aegean. The city, which was destroyed by wars and natural disasters, gradually lost its importan- ce and was finally abandoned. Troy Museum today welcomes visitors at the entrance to the Ancient City of Troy, which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List back in 1998. The museum depicts and expla- ins the life and archaeological history of Troy and its cultu- res through artefacts recovered during excavations. Çanakkale is also famous wor- ldwide for the battle that took place here following the outbre- ak of World War I. The Allied fleet’s attempt to force passa- ge through the Dardanelles in February 1915 failed and was followed by an amphibious lan- ding on the Gallipoli Peninsula in April 1915. The objective was to conquer Istanbul (then sti- ll known as Constantinople), but the Turkish Army, under the leadership of then comman- der Kemal Atatürk, managed to hold off the land offensive and the allies were forced to wi- thdraw in January 1916, after eight months of heavy fighting. The battlefields are now occu - pied by a national park conta- ining numerous monuments that were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Tenta- tive List in 2014.

If you are tra- versing the Gulf of Izmit by car, be sure to pass through Mount Kaz, or Mount Ida (Kaz Dagları), but there are also other must- see sites in the area. Ayvalık Ayvalık is famous for its ex - cellent diving, delightful beac- hes, expansive national parks and stunning architecture. He- re you can visit Şeytan Sofra - sı (the Devil’s Feast) and enjoy marvellous sunsets. It is re- commended to try “papali- na” fish while you’re on Cunda Island, but also its famous to-

asted sandwiches “Ayvalık To - stu”. It is impossible to imagine Ayvalık without its sanctuaries, but also without its beaches. The most notable is Sarımsaklı Beach, which is renowned for its dry sand that doesn’t stick to the body. Beach bars and se- afront restaurants serving local cuisine enable visitors to take a nice break from the sea and sun. With 22 islands, 60 diving spots and rich underwater fau- na and flora, Ayvalık is a true di - ver’s paradise. The "red coral" that can be seen in 34 diving spots along the Ayvalık coast is enchanting. With optimal cli- matic conditions and favoura- ble winds and waves, Ayvalık is also a very popular destination for windsurfers and sailors. Cunda Island Cunda Island, also known as Alibey Island (Alibey Adası), is situated just off the coast of Ayvalık between Çanakkale and

İzmir on the north coast of the Aegean. A road bridge conne- cts the island to the mainland, while its Anatolian Greek archi- tecture – with old houses and narrow streets – is particularly interesting. Apart from enjoying the sea and sand, other thin- gs to do on Cunda include visi- ting the Lovers’ Hill for its ama- zing views, visiting the Panagia Church and Library. This island is also famous for its glorious sunsets, delicious seafood and taverns where the conversati- on invariably continues into the early hours of the morning.

Skrivena strana tehničkih predmeta koje baštini Muzej nauke i tehnike The “hidden” side of the technological devices that are kept in the Museum of Science and Technology

„Gola tehnologija“ IZLOŽBA

Belgrade’s Museum of Science and Technology is presenting – for the first time in Serbia and among the first times worldwide – the exclu- sive exhibition entitled Naked Technology, authored by Zoran Lević, Dušan Petrović and Ivan Stanić, and dedicated to exposing the “hid- den” side of the technological devices that are preserved in the collec- tions of this museum. “New X-ray technology enables us to capture dynamic images of objects, providing us with the opportunity to see their interiors with- out disassembling them, even while they are in operation. Hence, our strong desire to share this new technological and museological prac- tice with our visitors through an exhibition with the intriguing title “Na- ked Technology,” all with the purpose of education and demonstrating new museological practices in the presentation of cultural heritage,” says Zoran Lević, senior curator, head of conservation and director of the Belgrade Museum of Science and Technology. When it comes to examining museum exhibits, it isn’t possible to ap- ply invasive techniques. In order to present the internal appearance and functioning of various devices to visitors, museums often create three-dimensional models or reconstruct them digitally. This exhibition will remain on display at the Museum of Science and Technology until September, with organisers preparing numerous supporting contents to accompany the exhibition throughout its duration. “Naked Technology “ EXHIBITION

Izložba će biti otvorena do septembra u Muzeju nauke i tehni- ke, a u toku njenog trajanja organizatori pripremaju brojne pra- teće sadržaje.

Dunav Film Fest FESTIVAL

The 6 th edition of the International Dunav Film Fest will unfold from 22 nd to 27 th August in the so-called Small Town (inner city) of Smederevo Fortress. This celebration of film that has been plac- ing Smederevo on the map of ma- jor festival destinations for the past six years will provide premiere screenings of the most significant cinematography achievements in the Danube region. Under an open sky, audiences will once again be able to enjoy more than 30 film productions divided between four programming units at four attractive Smederevo locations. This 6 th edition of the festival will also be marked by no- table achievements of major festivals, award-winning films of affirmed direc- tors, as well as works by young filmmak- ers only just embarking on their career journeys. This festival has a competitive character, with each year’s jury com- prising relevant figures from the film world who award the Dunavska Lađa [Danube Ship] Award for the best film in the competitive selection. The fes- tival’s main location will this year once again be the Small Town of Smedere- vo Fortress.

„Dunav film fest“ FESTIVAL

Rundek i ekipa / Rundek&Ekipa KONCERT / CONCERT

Darko Rundek & Ekipa will hold back-to-back concerts at Belgrade’s Jevremovac Botan- ical Garden on 26 th and 27 th August, thereby returning to the spot where they gave tri- umphant performances over the previous two years at the same time. Together with his band, and in an atmosphere of euphoria, this great of the region’s music scene treated fans to renditions of his biggest hits, some from the period of rock band Haustor and oth- ers from the period of his solo career. Rundek is also among the region’s most prominent environmental protection activists, so it comes as no surprise that performances at the Botanical Garden have special significance for him.

„Srbin kojekude“ A Serb Everywhere knjiga / book

Dok piše o naizgled običnim, svakodnevnim dogodovštinama i događajima, autor rasvetljava mnogo kru- pnije i ozbiljnije društvene pojave i probleme. In his latest work, A Serb Everywhere, writer Bojan Ljubenović resumes his handling of to- day’s Serbia in an extremely humorous and satirical way that’s specific to him. This book is simultaneously a travelogue, an intimate journal, an autobiography and a mirror reflecting our reality. While he writes about apparently ordinary, everyday happenings and events, the author sheds light on much bigger and more serious social phenomena and prob- lems. Ljubenović’s recognisable piercing humour is hidden deep within hilarious lines ded- icated to the Serb who has twice found himself in a faraway land across the ocean, but al- so to his actions in Belgrade, by the sea or during the state of emergency.

Sasha Alexander was born in Los Angeles to a Serbian mother, and since 2007 has been married to director Edoardo Ponti, the son of Sophia Loren, with whom she has two children

same.

Sasha alexander, actress I speak Serbian often, nurturing the memory of my roots Did you know that behind her alias is the real name of Suzana Drobnjaković and that this famous Serbian-American is the daughter-in-law of the

legendary Sophia Loren? T hose who watched Dawson’s Creek, NCIS, Shameless or the third instalment of cult American blockbuster film Mission: Impossible might be surprised to find that the real name of actress Sasha Alexander, who ap- pears in all these titles, is actually called Suzana Drobnjaković! Born to an Italian father and a Serbian mother, she is extremely proud of her Balkan roots despite having spent her entire life in Amer- ica (she was born in Los Angeles). We’re currently watching Sasha Al- exander in the series Rizzoli & Isles on the FOX Crime channel, and it was actually this role of the blunt and pragmatic forensic scientist Maura Isles, whom she has portrayed over seven seasons and more than 105 episodes, that brought her world- wide fame, but also a precious friend- ship with her co-star Angie Harmon. In this exclusive interview for Ele- vate, the most famous Hollywood star with Serbian origins reveals the

sations aren’t hollow stories about guys and nights out, but rather in- telligence and honest feelings. There aren’t many shows that have allowed relations between the main charac- ters to develop to that level gradu- ally, only to ultimately form a truly strong and emotionally charged re- lationship. And it seems to me that that’s also precisely why the audience loved Jane and Maura.” What was your greatest challenge in creating the role of Maura Isles? “Everything [laughs]. Apart from the fact that we’re both wom- en, we have absolutely nothing in common. I’m bad at logic and maths, we have completely different char- acters. I’m more the type of person who surrenders to the moment and likes unpredictability and challenges, while a life without rules would be hell for Maura. But I liked the fact that she instilled some discipline in my life. The biggest challenge for me was definitely her job. I could nev- er have imagined myself at a foren- sic autopsy table, dissecting people and using all the medical terms that I somehow managed to master in the end, but you never know what life will bring you. And I ended up spending seven seasons doing pre- cisely that. Did you read Tess Gerrit- sen’s novels that formed the basis of the show prior to standing in front of the cameras? “I didn’t. The script for the show was my first contact with Tess, and as part of my preparations I then read two of her books for the first time. However, the producers liked the fact that I’d had no previous contact with the content, so they wanted me to base Maura on a vision of my own, and not to stick so much to the nov- els and what fans of Tess Gerritsen would like to see in the show. And it seems to me that it was precise- ly this new approach that brought some authentic freshness. Interest- ingly, I like thrillers and mysteries and, apart from Tess, one of my fa- vourite authors, whose works I en- joy, is John Grisham.”

memories that connect her to Serbia and how her journey led her to the heroine that is Maura Isles. “Actually, the enduring “friend- ship” with Maura left its mark on me. It’s impossible to portray someone for so long without acquiring at least some of their habits and character traits. Maura and I differ a lot. She is the essence of pure reason and pro- fessional coolness. Her logic cuts like a knife and that’s why she found the perfect counterbalance in Jane Riz- zoli, who is completely spontaneous, chilled and isn’t bothered about any of the rules without which my Mau- ra’s life would be possible. The truth is that I’m much closer to Jane than to Maura in my private life, though I do increasingly “catch” myself won- dering: “Hmm, how would Maura solve this problem?”, reveals this ac- tress who often boasts of her knowl- edge of Serbian, which – alongside English and Italian – is the third lan- guage that she speaks fluently. And so it was that, in one of the most popular late-night chat shows, the whole of America was able to watch Sasha teaching famous host Conan O’Brien how easy Serbian really is.” You also demonstrated that in the series, right? “Yes, but in a slightly different way than with Conan [laughs]. Our language is very exotic to foreign- ers. I often speak Serbian, because I think it’s important to nurture the memory of one’s roots. How- ever, with Conan I demonstrated that slightly juicier side of the Ser-

bian language, through original Ser- bian swear words of course, which was being recounted for months af- terwards. That’s nonetheless a lit- tle subtler in the series. Maura ex- plains, through a conversation with Jane and their colleagues, how easy a language Serbian is to learn; she converses with the victims of at- tackers whose methods are linked to crimes committed against Serbs during World War II. The produc- ers turned my links with Serbia in- to very interesting material to en- rich the series, and I’m glad that was so well accepted by the audience.” Your association with Riz- zoli & Isles lasted almost a decade. How are your mem- ories of filming for this se- ries? “The reason I loved this show from the start is that it was never a classic thriller, but nor did it have the standard series format that we were then accustomed to. The whole sto- ry focused on the wonderful friend- ship between two completely dif- ferent but equally successful and courageous women. That was always what I liked the most about Rizzoli & Isles, that naturalness and unobtru- siveness of theirs. They are real su- perwomen, but not in the sense of fighting criminals. Their strength is reflected in their ability to be alone. They recognised that in one anoth- er and that’s what makes this series special. I like the fact that we didn’t impose on them a need to be best friends at all costs; that their conver-
