Welcome message

Mart 2023.

March 2023

Dragi putnici,

Dear passengers,

Mart nam donosi proleće i poče- tak letnje sezone u avio-industriji . Deo uspeha dugu- jemo upravo vama. Hvala na poverenju. Nastav- ljamo sa unapređivanjem ponude i usluga kako bismo vam pružili još bolje veze i veću udobnost na svim našim letovima. Zimsku sezonu iskoristili smo za planiranje i spremni smo za dalju ekspanziju. U naredna tri meseca pokrenućemo više od 20 direktnih linija u Evropi, Aziji i Africi, a sredinom maja poleteće- mo i do Čikaga, naše nove destinacije u Severnoj Americi. Do Vetrovitog grada letećemo tri puta nedeljno, ponedeljkom, sredom i subotom. Pre- pustite se mirisu parfema, papirusa, začina, ri- be i nargila, spoju tradicionalnog i modernog, prošlosti, sadašnjosti i budućnosti. Uživajte u letu i srećan put, Jirži Marek, generalni direktor Er Srbije

March brings us spring and the be- ginning of the airline industry’s sum- mer season . Traditionally the most active part of the year for aviation, the border between the winter and summer seasons has been slowly disappearing. This is evidenced by the results our company achieved in the first month of 2023. With more than 219,000 passengers carried, we had a record-breaking January since we started operating under the name of Air Ser- bia. We owe a portion of our success to you. Thank you for placing your trust in us. We will continue to improve our offer and services, in order to provide even bet- ter connections and greater comfort on all our flights. We utilised the winter season to plan and prepare for our further expansion. In the coming three months, we will launch more than 20 direct services in Europe, Asia and Africa, and in mid-May we will also start fly- ing to Chicago, our new North American destination. We will operate flights to the “Windy City” three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and will be gracious hosts for you on our flights. If you’ve already started planning your summer holiday, you’ve likely already heard about Air Serbia’s direct flights that can take you to the Greek islands of Corfu, Crete and Rhodes this summer. They are ideal destinations for all those wishing to “recharge”, but they are no less interesting to those who love ac- tive breaks. The large number of cultural and histori- cal monuments on these islands are impossible to ful- ly explore in just a few days, so you’ll probably require another trip. We will be there for you for that too. Then there’s also Turkey. You can reach Istanbul and Ankara via our airline’s scheduled flights, but al- so Izmir. Near this Mediterranean port city are the ancient Pergamon and Ephesus, which attract tour- ists from all over the world. While we’re on the topic of historical locations, we also invite you to fly with us to Cairo, where authentic Egyptian landmarks await. Give in to the scent of perfume, papyrus, spices, fish and hookah, the combination of the traditional and the modern, the present and the future. Did just thinking about your summer break take you to warmer places in your mind, as it did for me? Until the summer is officially here, or until we visit a sunny destination, we always have the European me- tropolises that never sleep. They will welcome you with open arms. Visit our website, click the Destinations section and pick one of the wonderful cities that we fly to from the dropdown menu. Enjoy your flight and have a pleasant trip, jiri marek, CEO Air Serbia

7 th consecutive record-breaking month Air Serbia carried 136 per cent more passengers in January than in the same month of 2022 This is the best January result of the Serbian national airline since it launched operations under the Air Serbia name

Sedmi rekordni mesec zaredom

Er Srbija u januaru prevezla 136 odsto više putnika nego u istom mesecu 2022.

Air Serbia transported 219,216 passengers in Janu- ary 2023 , marking a 136 per cent increase compared to the same month of 2022 or an increase of 20.4 percentage points compared to January 2020. “At the beginning of the year we published the operational results of our company for 2022, which showed significant growth. The start of a new calendar year brings new records. Over the course of Janu- ary 2023, we transported 126,513 more passengers than in the same month of 2022, operating 2,756 fli- ghts, which is an increase of almost 68 per cent compared to January 2022. This is the seventh consecu-

tive month in which we’ve broken our own records. We have reason to believe that this trend will continue moving forward,” says Boško Rupić, Air Serbia’s General Manager Com- mercial and Strategy. When it comes to Western Eu- rope, the most popular destinations in the Air Serbia network during Ja- nuary 2023 were Zurich, Paris, Am- sterdam, Vienna, London and Berlin. In the region, they were Podgorica and Tivat, while there was also gre- at interest among passengers in Istanbul, as well as existing transo- ceanic routes to New York and Tia- njin, which the national airline has been flying to since 9 th December 2022.

Why do you like planes?

Avione volim zbog brzine I like planes because of the speed

Who is Gile? The lead singer of Serbian rock band Električni Orgazam, Srđan Gojković, aka Gile, is a certified rocker and the author of legend- ary hits that are still sung across the whole of the former Yugosla- via. He founded Električni Orga- sam in 1980, which quickly went on to achieve huge popularity. In early 1981, together with Belgrade groups Idoli and Šarlo acrobata, they recorded the joint album Pack- age Arrangement, which is con- sidered one of the best and most significant albums of the then Yu- goslav rock scene, which marked the start of the Yugoslav new wave. I like flying by plane, first and foremost, for practical reasons , i.e., speed. I often travel for work and this is the simplest and fastest mode of trans- port for me. Apart from that, there’s of course the fact that it’s the safest, but also the most comfortable mode of transport. One amazing fact is that I’m sometimes not even aware that I’ve set off and I’ve already arrived! What don’t you board a plane without? I try to carry with me as few things as possible and often travel with hand luggage alone. I usually don't stay long in the destinations I’m visiting. My bag usually contains some book to read, headphones for my phone, a small speaker (so I can listen to music in my hotel room), basic hygiene products and some clothes to change into. I’m a prac- tical person!

hours of daylight than any ot- her European city-break desti- nation, ensuring you’ll be able to shoot wonderful photos until late into the evening. Carpet of stones There is so much to see on the streets of Portuguese cities: colourful doors and windows, amazing street art and beauti- ful tiles, but there is even mo- re to enjoy right beneath yo- ur feet! The typical Portuguese pavement patterns of black and white stones that adorn the pavements and public squ- ares all over Lisbon are called ‘calçada portuguesa’. The sen- sation is almost like walking constantly over a beautiful car- pet of stones adorned with flo- ral patterns and waves. This style first appeared in Portu - gal around the year 1500, but it wasn’t until the 19 th centu- ry that it was implemented in the way that we’re familiar wi- th today. Tiled façades Lisbon probably has more bu- ildings with tiled façades than any other city in the world. A vi- sit to the National Tile Museum in Lisbon will allow you to see examples of tiles dating from the 15 th century to the present day, as you acquaint yourself with this ancient tradition that is far beyond being merely de- corative and also has very pra- ctical purposes. It was discove- red centuries ago that adding tiles to building facades con- tributed to preserving the inte- rior warmth of homes, whilst also helping delay the spre- ad of flames in the case of a fire. Following the earthqua - ke that destroyed most of Li- sbon city centre in 1755, the city’s central core had to be re- built quickly. In the 19 th centu- ry, adding tiles proved to be le- ss expensive than using stone or other sturdy materials. The

Savršena fotografija Lisabon je veoma star grad. Zapravo, drugi najstariji glav - ni grad u Evropi, posle Atine. Veliki zemljotres 1755. godi -

The Portuguese are known far and wide as warm, sociable and hospitable people, but that story does little to prepare you for just what awaits you in Li- sbon. Yes, you will expect to find it pleasant, to perhaps feel at home, but you won’t be pre- pared for the incredible sense that you’ve already been to this magical city and that you ulti- mately shouldn’t leave. It’s dif- ficult to describe the experien - ce of walking through the hills of Lisbon, or neighbourhoods that resound with fado music as you chat on every corner wi- th strangers who treat you li- ke a long-lost friend. You have to experience that. That‘s why

we’re suggesting some “musts” for your visit to Lisbon, but no- thing can replace simply wan- dering around this unique city... Picture Perfect Lisbon is a very old city. It’s actually the second oldest ca- pital city in Europe, after At- hens. The old town centre was destroyed by the great earthqu- ake of 1755, after which it was rebuilt in a classical style, wi- th wide boulevards and mosa- ic cobblestones. You’ll want to capture all the tiled buil- dings and colourful, higgledy- piggledy neighbourhoods. As the westernmost capital city in Europe, Lisbon enjoys more

Pre neko - liko vekova dodavanje ploči - ca na fasade doprinelo je oču - vanju toplote u kucama, ali je takođe pomoglo da se od - loži širenje plamena u sluča - ju požara. truth is that, over time, colour- ful façade tiles came to repre- sent an intrinsic element of the country’s aesthetics and popu- lar culture. Charming Alfama You simply cannot leave Li- sbon without wandering the lanes of Alfama, the city’s ol- dest neighbourhood, dotted with crumbling old houses, cobblestone streets, quaint li- ttle shops and numerous Fa- do bars and restaurants. You can easily spend an entire day ambling through the streets of Alfama, picking up knick- knacks, sipping cups of coffee and enjoying the splendid views on offer. And, yes, don’t forget to conclude your tour with a Fado evening at one of Alfama’s many Fado bars. Tram No. 28 Lisbon was built on seven steep hills. Be sure to pack comfy shoes and don’t miss out on the chance to experien- ce a trip on one of the antique trams that still rumble happily up the steepest and narrowest streets. These famous, rickety, bright yellow vehicles snake through Lisbon, but Tram No. 28 in particular passes through the extremely scenic neighbo- urhood of Alfama. Given that it is so popular among tourists, it is also usually packed, even early in the morning. So, if you don’t like standing or jostling around people in a crowded tram, take Tram No. 24, whi- ch remains a hidden gem of Li- sbon’s public transport. Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower One ‘must’ in Lisbon is setting aside time to tour Belém, Li- sbon’s iconic museum distri- ct, where the Jerónimos Mo- nastery tops the list. The architecture and designs are so powerful in their own ri- ght, but some really intriguing

history only adds to the expe- rience. This sight’s proximity to the sea ensured that it was where seafarers stayed befo- re embarking on their journeys. Vasco da Gama even spent his last night in Portugal here pri- or to embarking on his voyage of discovery to the Orient. You can find his tomb inside. Along with the Jerónimos Mo- nastery, Belém Tower forms part of a UNESCO heritage si- te. A 16 th -century Manueli- ne-styled structure, it was used as a port of embarkation/di- sembarkation for explorers and served as a lighthouse. It is not difficult to imagine the impor - tant role it played in Portugal’s Age of Discovery and Explora- tion. You can take the narrow, spiral staircase all the way up to the top of Belém Tower. Amazing Sintra One of Portugal’s hidden gems lies just 30 kilometres west of Lisbon: the magical, poetic Sin- tra. This small town and mu- nicipality in the Greater Lisbon area owes its fairy-tale appea- rance largely to invading Mo- ors, who brought part of the- ir wondrous architecture here. The most picturesque part is the old town (vila velha), which represents a veritable labyrinth of narrow streets bordered by old stone houses, with luxurio- us bougainvillea flowers han- ging over the roofs and painted tile façades. Sintra is also fa- mous for the surrounding area and fantastic castles, such as the Palace of Pena, the Natio- nal Palace of Sintra, the Quin- ta da Regaleira, the Palace of Monserrate... Cape Roca 16 th -century Portuguese po- et Luis de Camões wrote abo- ut Cabo da Roca, Cape Roca: “here, where the land ends and the sea begins…” Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Cape Roca represents the we- sternmost point of continen- tal Europe. At 150 metres abo- ve sea level, the beautiful view provided from this spot is all but impossible to describe in words, especially if you’re for- tunate enough to observe sun- set here, when rays of yellow, red and orange shimmer acro- ss the ocean. The rock faces are steep and the waves are powerful and noisy, while the- re’s also a lighthouse that first opened in 1772.

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, representing the first institute of its kind to be established in Southeast Europe, aims to be the nexus between science and industry

Pored pomenute, tu su istraživačke grupe „Computer Vision and Remote Sen- sing“, „Human Computer Interfa- ce“, „Green AI“ i „Smart Factory“.

Malo mi to zvuči strašno, a vama?

Reflektor / Spotlight

We start by asking Dr Rakić where Serbia stands in the world of artificial in- telligence... “According to the Global Inno- vation Index 2022, Serbia ranks 55 th , while our country is the re- gional leader in terms of innovation performance. The Institute for Ar- tificial Intelligence of Serbia repre- sents the first institute of this type to be established in Southeast Eu- rope and aims to be a link between science and business, in order to contribute to the development of capacities for innovation in Serbia. Similarly, several lessons on the subject of artificial intelligence were added to the curriculum for sev- enth and eighth grade high school pupils in 2021, while master’s pro- grammes linked directly to artifi- cial intelligence have been launched, and that has happened at faculties in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Niš.” Artificial intelligence offers immeasurable possibilities and could change more or less everything we do and the way we live. Where is that most evident? “The possibilities of artificial intelligence really are immeasura- ble, but I think they’re most evident where we use them on a daily ba- sis, or rather where they ease our lives, and maybe even help. So, for example, we have user experiences in shopping, online searches, vari- ous streaming platforms for music or watching films. There where we enjoy the benefits of artificial in- telligence, from Google Maps on- wards, are probably the most ev- ident possibilities for everyone, though we might not even know that it’s all AI. However, I don’t con- sider the most beneficial use of ar- tificial intelligence as the one that’s most obvious. The most beneficial uses aren’t the most obvious to us. This is the case, for example, in the field of healthcare, or in produc- tion, when it comes to optimising the operations of some factories...”

The notion that the econ- omy must be based on knowledge and innova- tion, and not on manual la- bour, seems to be becom- ing increasingly prevalent. Should that concern us? “I think that should make us happy, and not cause us to worry. Humans are thinking beings and what distinguishes us from animals is creativity and the ability to con- template, thus I think that contrib- utes to a better and brighter future for people, who might have few- er physically demanding jobs, and more of those that are mentally and creatively challenging.” People are still quite hesi- tant regarding AI. Is there reason for fear? Could ma- chines replace us? “I think people everywhere are wary of artificial intelligence and we also commonly hear worrying state- ments from those dealing with indi- vidual areas of artificial intelligence. I would say that there’s no cause for fear, but there is cause for caution. We have to be cautious with every new technology and every new dis- covery, and to use it responsibly and intelligently.” When talk turns to AI, the issue of ethics is often mentioned. How do you view that; where are the boundaries, if indeed there are any? “Ethics guidelines are extreme- ly useful and I don’t think ethics should be left down to the individ- ual, and nor should the selection of ethical boundaries, rather that must be regulated. And ethics in AI is regulated by an act on the re- sponsible and trustworthy applica- tion of artificial intelligence at the European level, and we also have a draft of just such an act for Ser- bia. We can discuss the bounda- ries and whether they exist, but it’s certain that not even ten peo- ple would agree if they were gath- ered in one room. The boundaries will therefore be set in the form of

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia What was science fiction until yesterday is reality today I can’t imagine a world in which machines will replace people; I can imagine a world in which machines will carry out difficult and dangerous jobs, while people do those creative ones that machines will never be capable of doing

a single law, order, and act, and writing those guidelines should in- clude the participation of not only experts in the field of artificial in- telligence, but also experts in the fields of various humanities, law and others.” AI has perhaps the most applications in medicine. One of my friends in New York was operated on by a robot. That sounds a bit scary to me, what do you think? “For me, the application of arti- ficial intelligence in medicine is very important. I know that Robot-As- sisted Surgery exists, where a robot assists a doctor with an operation, and I find that very comforting, not scary, because a human hand can never be as stable or precise as a ro- botic hand. If operations are per- formed in this way, they are less invasive and much more precise. Although I’m not an expert in it, Robot-Assisted Surgery seems saf- er and more reliable than a doctor having to do everything by them- selves during some very lengthy operation.” There’s nevertheless some- thing truly scary in the no- tion that machines could “take over”, like in The Ter- minator or The Matrix. Fiction aside, could that which remains in the realm of science fiction today be- come some distant future reality? “The idea that machines will take over is indeed terrifying, of course it is! As I’m a big fan of sci-fi and I love The Terminator, I’ve seen some things in the field of biotech that were sci-fi and are now reality. However, nothing is happening yet even though there’s talk of how they will clone us, how someone will take our DNA and make identical repli- cas. That still hasn’t happened de- spite being spoken about for more than 30 years, and it won’t happen, and nor is science even heading in that direction, because it’s actual-

ly heading in the direction of ex- tending human life. I’m entertained by The Matrix and The Terminator, and perhaps what scares me hypo- thetically is how we will prepare our children for such a future. I think we need to teach them to be much more flexible than we were, nev- er mind our parents. The occupa- tions that exist today won’t exist in ten or twenty years, and now I can’t even predict what those oc- cupations of the future will be. Our youngsters have to be open-mind- ed, to learn constantly and adapt to a new market.” I asked ChatGPT who he is. He said that he’s software, artificial intelligence, with- out physical existence and without personal feelings or consciousness. How far are we from the possibili- ty of developing conscious- ness or emotions? “I think the main question here is defining consciousness and emo- tions, and it seems to me that those are extremely philosophical ques- tions. That’s the same as when I was asked a question when I was dealing with biotechnology, and that was whether we can make life and let’s define life. What does it mean to be a living organism? If I’m capable of creating a synthetic cell, have I cre- ated life? Those are all philosophi- cal questions that, it seems to me, are beyond the realm of science, and I would leave it to the philos- ophers and theologians, who have a greater capacity to contemplate in that direction.” Have you chatted with ChatGPT; how does it seem to you? “I have, of course. Who hasn’t chatted with ChatGPT? I also find that kind of chatting fun. I asked him questions like those trivial ones, to write me a composition or a song, to some more serious things, such as answering some complex scientific questions. I must admit that I sometimes even use it instead of Google or Wikipedia.”

Serbia was the first country in the region to adopt a national strategy for the development of Artificial In- telligence for the 2020-2025 period, and one of the measures stipulat- ed in this strategy is the establish- ment of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Develop- ment of Serbia. Founded in March 2021 by the Government of Serbia, it today em- ploys more than 40 doctors of sci- ence and doctoral students. Head- quartered in Novi Sad, the Institute also has offices in Belgrade, Kragu- jevac and Niš. Speaking for Elevate, Dr Branka Rakić, head of the Insti- tute’s AI in Healthcare and Lifesci-

ence research group, says that the Institute targets the further devel- opment and education of young people in the field of artificial in- telligence, supporting and linking up with industry, and the creation of an ecosystem that will contrib- ute to the further development of artificial intelligence in Serbia. Sci- entists are divided into several re- search groups with differing fo- cuses, and the group that’s led by our interlocutor deals with health- care applications for artificial in- telligence. The Institute’s other re- search groups include: Computer Vision and Remote Sensing; Hu- man Computer Interface; Green AI; and Smart Factory.
