YEAR OF NEW POSSIBILITIES 2018 GODINA NOVIH MOGUĆ NOSTI
Dear Guests,
Dragi gosti,
In October we are commemorating the fifth birthday of Serbia’s national airline. It was on the fateful date of 26th.October 2013 that a flight between the capital cities of Serbia and the United Arab Emirates symbolically represented the new hope of Serbian commercial aviation – Air Serbia. Our company, which represents the heritage of the tradition of its celebrated predecessors – Aeroput and JAT – this year, on 15th February, also marked another important jubilee – 90 years since the country’s first commercial flight. We constantly advance our knowledge, strive to keep pace with the times, and ensure that all we do is in the interests of our guests. And thus the year behind us was also a turning point in the company’s operations. New services have been introduced, while the offer has been adapted to the needs of every guest. You can now take advantage of four tariffs and ancillary services with which you can create your journey and tailor your flight precisely to you. That which we are extremely proud of is our colleagues. Their main task every day is to ensure that you feel good, both during your flight and during your stay at the airport.
Our Premium Lounge at Nikola Tesla Airport, with its excellent offer of contents and specialities, as well as its wonderful ambience, constantly entices those who seek the best service and comfort. During the previous three years that it has existed, the number of visitors to the Premium Lounge has exceeded 80,000. Apart from our business class guests and those who’ve

Another surprise for you is the new promotional campaign‘Book today - fly tomorrow’. This new campaign was launched on 6th September, while the destinations change every week and the purchase of discount tickets is possible every Thursday. In order for your flight to pass as pleasantly as possible, for this issue we’ve spoken to many interesting people and toured numerous popular European destinations. Speaking for Elevate this month are Takashi Murakami, Matija Bećković and our three-time champions of volleyball. You’ll also find out what Novak Đoković›s return to the top of world tennis looks like. The cover page featuring a Pirot Kilim rug is the best start to the story of this small city in the south of Serbia. In this issue of our magazine you can also read our interesting story about Hilandar, an important spiritual site for the inhabitants of Serbia that’s located on Greece’s Mount Athos. We’re also taking you on a journey across Slovenia - you’ll discover more about this Alpine country on the pages of our magazine. Thank you for flying Air Serbia. We wish you a pleasant journey!

VOLIM PUTOVANJA.
I LOVE TRAVEL. I’m really lucky that I travel a lot, even to those farthest destinations, so a plane is the ideal means of transport for me. Considering the distanc- es I’ve travelled, I have lots of anecdotes from planes... THE LENGTH OF THE JOUR- NEY ALSO DETERMINES THE CONTENTS OF MY BAG , but the things I really can’t do without are: moisturising fa- cial cream, perfume, a good book, sunglasses and the new ‘glo’ device for heating tobac- co, which has a beautiful de- sign, which is particularly im- portant for me, as well as the fact that it doesn’t gener- ate ash and smoke when con- sumed. A sketchbook and my favourite pencil are also man- datory, for all the ideas that cross my mind. KENYA WAS THE JOURNEY OF MY DREAMS. The Indian ocean, safari, breathtaking na- ture, sleeping in tents on an endless savanna, meeting with the Masai Mara tribe, the mys- ticism of the African continent and the hospitality of the pop- ulation... a priceless experience. That’s one of those trips I could talk about endlessly. How- ever, Paris is currently my fa- vourite destination and a city I travel to often due to profes- sional obligations. I took a ma- jor step in my career when I en- tered the international market with my brand Emilie by Bilja- na Tipsarević for the first time, so now my dresses can also be found in showrooms in Paris and London.

This first flight between the capital of Serbia and the United Arab Emirates symbolically established the new hope of Serbian commercial aviation – Air Serbia. In this year that has seen the company commemorate 90 years since the country’s first commercial flight (15 th February ) and 91 years of tradition as an airline (17 th June), the fifth birthday of Air Serbia (26 th October) is also being marked. The launch of the new Serbian national carrier began with the sign- ing of a codeshare agreement between then JAT Airways and Etihad Airways on 15 th April 2013. Then, on 15 th June that same year, Etihad EY 71 flights were launched between Abu Dhabi and Belgrade, on which JAT Airways had its mar- keting code. Subsequently, on 1 st August 2013, a Strategic Partnership Agree- ment was signed between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and Eti- had Airways, according to which 51 per cent of shares in the Serbian airline remained under Serbian state ownership and the national airline of the United Arab Emirates became the owner of a 49-per-cent stake. In 2013, on 24 th October, one of the popular symbols of JAT – the branch office beside St. Mark’s Church in Belgrade, formally opened in its new colours, under the new name and new brand of Air Serbia. A day later, a ceremony in the large hangar of JAT Technical saw Air Serbia officially presented to the pub- lic, in the presence of the highest representatives of the Government of Ser- bia, Etihad and numerous officials, domestic and foreign media representatives and airline staff. The first promotional flight was conducted the next day, with YU APC - Novak Đoković Air Serbia, JU 800, flying from Belgrade to Abu Dhabi. Novak was the first plane to be named under the auspices of the “Living Legends” programme, which aims to recognise individuals from Serbia who shine in their own field of expertise and whose achievements are in line with the Air Serbia brand and values. Aircraft have to date been named after top ten- nis player Novak Đoković, basketball player Vlade Divac, footballer Dejan Stank- ović, star of Serbian and European acting Predrag ‘Miki’ Manojlović and music superstar Goran Bregović.

Šta podstiče, a šta oduzima inspi- raciju? – Najviše me je nadahnjivao ka- men. I još me inspiriše. – Privlači me pećinsko doba i nje- gova jednostavnost. I pisanje po pe- ćinskim zidovima. Malo loviš, malo pišeš, malo zatežeš luk i strelu gric- kajući orašaste plodove.
– Kad se svi drugi kompromisa najviše plaše, tada me najviše privlače. Pravim piscima nisu bitna ni imena ni naslovi. Koliko imate knjiga u biblioteci? Da li čitate knjige i novine on- lajn? Kakav odnos imate pre- ma internetu? – U rukama sam sudbine.
Najviše me je nadahnjivao kamen. I još me inspiriše. A kako i ne bi?! Ne znam da li znate – na svetu nema dva ista kamena I was most inspired by stone. And it still inspires me. And how Could it not?! I don’t know if you know – no two stones in the world are the same
A cademic Matija Bećković, as a writ- er, poet, chronicler-contemporary and erudite, records our history, present and future, as they were, are or could be. In his lines a man is present who constantly works on himself and dreams of the simplicity of the stone age, while si- multaneously choosing the highest possible heights. Both in planes and in life. As a doyen of the written word, do you find it easier or harder to write than when you started your literary opus, or is every word a new trail to blaze? - It’s popular to work on oneself. I can’t stand repeating myself and rediscovering my- self again every moment. I only change the models of mobile phones, iPhones and lap- tops. Content follows technology. I try to keep in step with new inventions. As a child, what did you dream of be- coming when you grew up? - It was important not to fall. In other words, to keep my head above the water. I’ve never driven, but I’ve always flown. Artists often draw inspiration from personal sadness or happiness. What stimulates your inspiration and what drains it? - I was most inspired by stone. And it still inspires me. And how Could it not?! I don’t know if you know – no two stones in the world are the same. If you could choose, which century would you most like to live in? - I’m attracted to caveman times and their simplicity. And writing on cave walls. You hunt a little, you write a little, you tighten your bow and arrows a little while nibbling nuts. What did your youth bring you and take from you on the road to maturity? - Youth brought me and took from me Duško Radović, Brana Petrović, Stevan Raičk- ović, Bata Mihailović, Milovan Đilas, Vera Pav- lodarska, Arsen Dedić, Momo Kapor... What would you do if you weren’t a writer? - I would, for example, be an advisor on culture for some superpower. What is an intellectual to you?
- Someone who has preserved good taste and the ability to differentiate between the im- portant and insignificant. Someone’s who’s in a position to understand that which he knows. In the 21 st century, many things have become “freely available”. How do you ultimately handle that? - It would be nice if you were right. Some- how,Ialwaysmissedthewords“helpyourself”. As an academic and respected public figure, are you privileged in Serbia? - I was lucky to live in a Serbia full of ide- als, both when they were there and when they weren’t. When in life are you ready to com- promise? - When everyone else is the most afraid of compromises, then they attract me most. How have journeys marked your life and creativity? - It’s most often he who believed he’d nev- er leave his village who tours the whole world. Which writers and books have you re- turned to throughout your life? - All real writers and books, no matter what they’re called. Neither names nor titles are important to real writers. How many books do you have in your library? - More than can fit in my apartment and on my shelves. Which libraries have you always loved the most? - The ones closest to home. I can’t im- agine changing two or three buses to get to the library. And distant libraries are also like long-distance love: they quickly collapse. Do you read books and newspapers online; what kind of relationship do you have with the internet? - I’m in the hands of fate. I’m too conscien- tious about the topic of the internet. I react to every murmur and don’t separate from the internet whether at home or on the road. I’m petrified of being overtaken and run over by the information highway. What kind of film or theatre script would you write now? - Something without words. In my film

Hobi imam kad nađem vreme za njega. Najviše uživam u sladoledu I have a hobby when I find time for it. I most enjoy ice cream
vot. I kakva je situacija među oblacima. Imate li hobi? – Imam kad dobijem slobodnog vremena. Na primer, uživam u sladoledu. Kuda najradije putujete i kojim prevoznim sredstvom?
there wouldn’t be many empty words. But you’d see, for example, how life emerges. And what the situation’s like among the clouds. Do you have a hobby? - I do when I have free time. For example, I enjoy ice cream.. Where do you travel the most and via which means of trans- port? - I don’t travel anywhere that I can’t get to by plane. I didn’t pay attention to that earlier, but as I got older I started picking planes. It doesn’t matter what the route is, as much as it’s important for me to be beside the window on the plane. What’s your relationship towards “flying”? - Metaphysical. And to the highest possible heights. Perhaps every man should soar in the sky beneath the clouds to see planet Earth from the highest heights. That would be therapeutic to the fate of mankind. When in your life do you have the impression that you flew and fell the most? - It’s hard to distinguish between them. A man doesn’t see his falls or his ascents. Both of them are seen and distinguished better by those who see that from the outside. You realised yourself a father, husband, grandfather. What did those roles bring to Matija Bećković? - I had someone to bother with my stories about my people. That’s why my grandchildren are scattered around the world. When you look back on your life to date, you consider...? - There is a play in which the actors wear nooses instead of ties around their necks, in order for them to be able to reconsider at any moment. I never wanted such a tie. Why is it good to be Matija Bećković? - I don’t know. One needs to be careful. Is that the one who sang: He doesn’t care - at least it’s easy for him - everything he’s touched has come to life! Who wouldn’t run in that direction?

Priča jednog šampiona / Story of a champion N ekada su sve delila dvojica – Federer i Nadal.

– Udahnuli smo tamo novu inspiraciju, no- vu motivaciju. Sveta pobeda. Može li biti lepše simbolike?

E verything used to be “shared” by two - Federer and Nadal. Then Novak got involved, and the three of them ruled the tennis world for a long time. Today there are as many as 14 active play- ers who have won at least one Grand Slam or Masters title. It’s tough to fight in such an order, and it became even tougher for Đoković in mid-2017, when the pain in his elbow became unbearable. Half a year of an ob- ligatory break and then - the terrible confrontation with reality and surgery. When he returned to the court, he seemed to have gone astray. He played in Indian Wells and lost to a player ranked 109 th in the world. He tried again in Miami and was immediately defeated by the 47 th player on the ATP list. Just as the enjoyment started to come back with reaching the third round in Monte Carlo, elimination followed im- mediately in his first match in Barcelona, against the play- er ranked 140 th in the world. In Madrid he was stopped
in the second round. At the venue of his greatest joy, Roland Garros, where in 2016 he’d unified the four Grand Slam trophies, he lost this time to Marco Cecchinato, ranked 72 nd in the world. These were painful days for Đoković, and he became aware that the problem was no longer in the body. “It seemed to me that I was close to my desired form, but I played terribly

against Cecchinato. And I realised after that match that I had to somehow “switch off” from everything. I went mountain hiking with my wife, in France. We isolated our- selves and looked at things from a different perspective,” revealed Đoković after his recent victory at the U.S. Open. Prior to this NewYork triumph,‘Nole’finally won, for the first time in his career, the Cincinnati Masters that he’d so desired, becoming the only tennis player in history to win every title in the masters series. And prior to that he again inscribed his name on the list of champions of the world’s most important tennis tournament – by win- ning Wimbledon. All three great achievements came af- ter the mountain; the same mountain that inspired Paul Cézanne to create many famous paintings. It didn’t even have a name until the 17 th century, but one of its peaks became famous for its huge crucifix, which became the target of many mountaineers. That peak was called the “Croix de Provence”, and was a place that many headed for, through great torment, overcoming their own path, and from there descending different. Nole returned in just that way - different. “We breathed in new inspiration, new motivation. I thought about tennis, about the emotion it awakens in me. And I’m only filled with positive thoughts! I simply felt that I have new breath for this sport. From that instant, tennis has been completely different for me. And in terms of the results,” smiles Đoković, adding after these three great titles, “I think I’ll go mountain hiking again soon” The mountain he climbed with his wife is called “Sainte-Victoire”. Holy Victory. Could the symbolism be more beautiful?
HOLY VICTORY Montagne Sainte-Victoire is located in the south of France, in Provence. Its high- est peak reaches 1,011m, but it is better known for the peak that boasts the afore- mentioned “Croix de Provence”. About 700,000 people visit this majestic mountain each year – it is popular for hiking, trekking and mountaineering, but also for explor- ing caves. This place not only impressed Cézanne, who immortalised the moun- tain on many canvases, but also Picasso, who had a studio at its base, while Kandin- sky loved it, and it has been the subject of many writings, songs and paintings...
