Dragi gosti,

Dear Guests,

Uveli smo modernu erbas flotu, postali jedina avio-kompanija u jugoistočnoj Evropi koja leti preko Atlantika, a predstavili smo i mnoge inovativne usluge. I to sve zahvaljujući

Last month we marked another high point in Air Serbia’s journey when we were presented with the prestigious 2017 Airline Market Leader award at the Air Transport World annual awards ceremony in New York City. Receiving the award, which is like an Oscar in the aviation industry, made me feel incredibly proud of our team, from the cabin crew on this flight to the technicians working on our fleet. The Airline Market Leader award is one of the top four accolades presented by Air Transport World each year and in 2017 we were chosen ahead of dozens of other global carriers. The reasons are many – in just over three years we have become a regional leader, we have introduced a modern Airbus fleet, become the only airline in Southeast Europe to fly transatlantic, and debuted many new innovative services. The Air Serbia name is now synonymous for excellence – all around

the world. And it is all down to the many dedicated people who work hard to go that extra mile and make your experience the best it can be. But it doesn’t stop there and this month we are continuing that upward trajectory. On 22nd April, Air Serbia will upgrade its core

It’s a very exciting project and we’re confident that it will make your travel experience with us even better. Probably the greatest star of this year’s Musicology Barcaffé Sessions, Gregory Porter will perform at Dom Sindikata on 20 th April. One of those true jazz voices that slide down the ear directly into the soul, Porter’s career was crowned, following two Grammy nominations, with the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2014 and 2017. Apart from his unique vocals, he has also become recognisable for always appearing with a cap on his head, designed especially for him, which he calls his “security blanket”.

WHAT DO YOU

Sve.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN BELGRADE? Everything. This is my favourite city. Not be- cause I was born there, but because it is spe- cial in many ways. It might not have archi- tecture like Paris, but it has something that singles it out from the rest of the world. In Belgrade you can listen to various types of music, watch the local stars, but al- so distinguished names, discover un- usual artists, eat delicious food, en-

Osim toga, na put ne idem ni bez slušalica i tableta It’s easy to recognise me at the airport, because I always have two pieces of hand luggage. I usually carry with me six racquets and the rest of the gear I need at tournaments. There are vitamin supplements, strings... Apart from that, I don’t go on the road without headphones and a tablet either.

I travel a lot throughout the entire year and I’ve really visited some unreally beautiful places. But when I’m thinking of the sea and rest, I most prefer to choose the Maldives. Those magical islands dom- inated by white sand, clear water and amazing colours... That place is not big, but everything revolves around enjoyment. There different cultures merge, so the natives are particu-

larly interesting and friendly, and they prepare fantas- tic fish. It is interesting that my travels have never taken me to Portugal, and I’d also like to go to Bora Bora island.

Beč Najveće brdo od jaja u Evropi

Vienna Europe’s tallest hill of eggs

The Austrian capital hosts traditional Ea- ster bazaars of food, drinks, jewellery and decorated eggs every April. The bazaar in front of Schönbrunn Palace, considered one of the most romantic, will be open this year from 1 st to 17 th April. Visitors can enjoy inspecting various handicraft works by 60 exhibitors, while the youn- gest amongst them will be able to ma- ke marzipan figures in workshops. Howe- ver, the real attraction is Freyung Square, where every year the organisers create a hill made from eggs, the biggest of its kind in Europe, with 40,000 painted eggs.

UFO LANDING?

At first glance this stunning image tak- en on Kerio crater in Iceland appears to show the arrival of a UFO - but it is in fact a rare natural phenomenon: the North- ern Lights. This incredible phenomenon appears like magic near the earth’s mag- netic poles and manifests in the form of nebulous light streaks in varied colours. When electrically charged particles orig- inating from the Sun start to move around the magnetic poles they collide with gas- es and light is emitted. This light repre- sents the magic known as Aurora Borealis.

Epska istorija srpske prestonice / Epic history of the Serbian capital

J oš jedan april upriličiće žite- ljima srpske prestonice i nje- nim gostima tradicionalnu manifestaciju Dani Beogra- da, u organizaciji Skupštine grada.

A nother April will see the resi- dents and guests of the Serbi- an capital treated to the tradi- tional Days of Belgrade event, organised by the City Assembly. This time, the occasion for concerts, exhibitions, per- formances, walking tours and other activi- ties is represented by an historic anniversary – 150 years since the last Turkish command- er of the Belgrade fortress, Ali Riza Pasha, surrendered the keys of Belgrade to Prince Mihailo Obrenovi ć . The handing over of the keys was a symbolic act, given that Serbia was then de facto independent and only legally part of the Ottoman Empire. Everything immedi- ately prior to that was part of the famous “Obrenovićs” diplomacy, and immediate- ly after – cause for celebration which Bel- graders, it seems, have always been known for. Just like for fighting. But here’s how it all unfolded chronologically. Long after the disappearance of the Vinca culture from the first “megalopolis” in Europe – as its epi-centre in a suburban Belgrade neighbourhood is today defined by archaeologists – and after this place was conquered by Celts, then Romans, and then ransacked by Huns, Sarmatians, Ostrogoths and Avars, when it was no longer called Singidunum but had already gained its cur- rent name (878AD), Belgrade was ruled by Byzantium. Due to its convenient position at the confluence of the rivers Sava and Dan- ube, it was an“object of the dark desires”of

SPARROW AND ARROW “The Turkish sieges were so strong that after one a sparrow was allegedly found that had been pierced by three arrows,” explains Zorica Arsić, from the Association of Tour Guides of Serbia, which is why this tiny bird is the symbol of Belgrade. Some storytellers considered that three arrows were not eno- ugh, so they exaggerated the number to six, in order for the tragedy to be even more remarkable.

be worded in today’s political vocabulary. Arriving on the scene then was the dip- lomatically skilled Prince Mihailo.“Drilling” from here, from there, he received an invi- tation from Sultan Abdul Aziz to him per- sonally, to go to Istanbul, to receive the fir- man edict on the liberation of all Serbian cities where Turks had estates. On the night of 17 th April 1867, Bel- graders awaited the prince with an unprec- edented celebration. They celebrated un- til morning. Two days later, Ali Riza publicly read the firman edict and handed over the keys of the city to the prince, who walked tri- umphantly to the Upper Town of Kalameg- dan Fortress, with all the Turkish guards re- placed by archers. Belgrade has been free ever since, with brief interruptions during the first and sec- ond world wars, in the face of new con- struction challenges. The certain degree of chaos that characterises the city today is written into its “genes”. For example, dur- ing the last handover from the Austrians to the Turks, the bastions around the for- tress were demolished, following the re- quest of the vanquished that the “proper- ty” be returned in its “previous state”, only for the Turks to rebuild them. Here even constitutions didn’t last long, with the first one, the Sretenjski Constitu- tion, from 1835, being in circulation only briefly, until it was rejected for being too democratic. Written with a view to the then recently adopted French constitution, it was

both Hungary and Bulgaria, and the reason for their friction and strategic aspirations. In the early Middle Ages, Belgrade was a haven for many Balkan peoples fleeing the Ottoman authorities, but it was itself con- quered in 1521 by the army of Suleiman the Magnificent. Settling the demolished and razed city, the Turks rebuilt it as an ori- ental town that inspired sighs among trav- el writers. However, even the latter centu- ries were not peaceful – it was taken from the Turks three times by Austria. However, on that decisive day in June 1862, it was the Turkish flag that flew above the Bel- grade fortress. “Sava Petković, a boy and merchant’s apprentice, wanted to take water from the Čukur drinking fountain (in today’s Dobrači- na Street), but he was opposed by a Turkish soldier, who considered that he had prior- ity,” says Zorica Arsić, of the Association of Tour Guides of Serbia. The boy was injured, which caused a serious gun battle between Turkish ranks and Serbian gendarmes, or the escalation of the conflict, as it would

considered too libertarian. A complex fusion of cultures is reflected in the development of the capital city. Miloš Obrenović, the fa- ther of Prince Mihailo, extended the city to Košutnjak, with a view to the European trend of royal court complexes being sur- rounded by gardens. With the practicality of a pig merchant, which Miloš was by“vo- cation”, he was not permitted to keep them in the gardens. The meadows of Topčider were partly a place for picnics, and partly a work station for livestock (and fish) ear- marked for export to the West, and here was also conceived a nursery of ornamental plants. In Vienna he purchased plane trees, the large trees that grace many of the boule- vards of European capitals. The memorial to this time is in the form of the great tree of this continental type, with its branches supported by 18 metal poles, next to Mi- loš’s Topčider residence. The epic History of Belgrade, filled with wars and destruction, ensures that wherev- er you scrape here you will encounter trac- es of previous civilisations. Even before the systematic organisation of people, during prehistoric times, this territory was inhab- ited by Neanderthals. The skeleton of one, killed in a fight with a mammoth, was found in 1938 during the construction of Alba- nia Palace. The mammoth also didn’t fare any better, judging by the remains found in the vicinity. In these turbulent conditions that are typical for the central part of the Balkans it is no wonder that we call this part of the world a “powder keg”... And in the glory of this turbulent his- tory, the Days of Belgrade have been cele- brated continuously every April since 2003, with fun activities, but also serious pro- grammes. This year’s event will be marked by concerts of classical, pop and jazz mu- sic. Visitors will stroll along the Sava prom- enade to the Belgrade fortress, where an exhibition of the Museum of the City of Belgrade will be located: featuring a se- lection of authentic photographs related to the anniversary of the handover of the keys to the city. po ugledu na tek doneti francuski, bio je previše slobodarski. Ovogo- dišnju priredbu obeležiće koncerti klasike, popa i džeza. Posetioci će proći Savskim šetalištem Beograd- ske tvrđave, gde će biti locirana izlož- ba Muzeja grada Beograda: pregršt autentičnih fotografija u vezi sa ju- bilejom predaje ključeva.

TRADICIJA TRADITION USKRS IZMEĐU ISTOKA I ZAPADA EASTER BETWEEN EAST AND WEST

Most people are confused by those 13 days, which actually represent the difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The confusion is no less when, like this year, all churches celebrate Easter on the same day. Are there any differences between Easters?

Upravo

E aster is the moment when Christ’s most important promise is realised – victory over death and the es- tablishment of a new covenant be- tween God and believers, a covenant that guarantees eternal life. In this context, es- pecially for Orthodox Christians, but also representatives of so-called Eastern Catho- lic Churches (Lebanese, Romanians, Ita- lo-Albanians, part of Ukrainians etc.), East- er represents the holiday of the holidays, a time when royals are crowned and wed, when heirs to the throne are baptised, but also ordinary mortals, and when old alli- ances are renewed and new ones estab- lished. This is also the time when, from the standpoint of the Christian Church, it is most desirable to die, given that dur- ing Easter Sunday and the following sev- en days, in the time of the so-called Bright Week/Renewal Week, the doors of Heaven are open and all those who leave this world during that time go directly to Heaven. Easter Exodus or Pascha, as this holi- day has long been called – based on the model of the Jewish holiday of Passover, is the holiday that marks the famous event, often depicted in film, of the Jews leav- ing Pharaonic Egypt, and which marks the

start of the great fasting period of Lent. It is precisely this process, which involves not only abstaining from food of animal ori- gin, but also, above all, from ugly thoughts and deeds, that acts as a kind of prepara- tion for the receiving of Easter commun- ion, and with it all that Easter symbolises. For Catholics and Protestants this fast begins on so-called Ash Wednesday, the day named after the symbolic ashes sprin- kled over the faithful by the priest, and lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays. Ortho- dox believers start their fast on Pure Mon- day, named after the old tradition of clean- ing the home and the household bathing on the eve of the Great Lent, which also lasts 40 days, counting Sundays. Unlike Catholics and Protestants, Or- thodox Christians celebrate Lazarus Satur- day or Willow day on the Saturday preced- ing the Great Sabbath, and all Christians celebrate the next day, Palm Sunday, repre- senting Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem. While Orthodox believers remain silent during Holy Week, or the week of Christ’s demise, undergoing strict fasting on water, and of- ten on Good Friday practising complete fasting, or at least avoiding red colour- ed foods, which symbolise the blood of

CRVENO JAJE, MAGIČNO I LEKOVITO

RED EGG, MAGICAL AND MEDICINAL The red egg is an authentic symbol of Easter and one of the oldest fertility symbols. According to traditi- on, opponents of Christ’s teachings mocked believers, saying that he would be resurrected when chickens start to lay red eggs, meaning never. When Christ’s re- surrection was announced by Mary Magdalene and the women-Myrrhbearers who entered his tomb, hens laid red eggs that morning. With Serbs, the egg plays an important role in numero- us beliefs and customs. It is placed in the first furrow in a field, in the wheat and flax during sowing; it is crac- ked on the horn of an ox before ploughing, and is al- so used as a defence against spells and hail. Througho- ut history, the egg has always represented something mysterious, magical and healing. The first Easter egg to be painted is placed in a place of honour in the hou- se, and it is called the čuvarkuća or strašnik (protector or guard). It is believed to protect the house and esta- tes, with an old custom being for the head of the hou- sehold to take it outside when a storm was on the ho- rizon, in the belief that it would cause the storm to bypass the estate. The guardian egg is kept until the following Easter, and breaking it is considered extre- mely bad luck.

Christ, in certain regions (southern Italy, the Catholic congregation in the Holy Land, parts of Croatia etc. ) Catholics have a cer- emony called the march of the crucified ili križničara, which symbolises Christ’s jour- ney to Calvary (Gagulta/Golgotha), carry- ing the cross, the weeping Virgin Mary and a series of components intend to serve as reminders of the crucifixion. The absence of light and ringing, just like the prayer vigil on the eve of Easter Sunday, are inherent to all Christians. They also share the custom of lighting the first candle, which symbolises the resurrected Lord, and which is brought into the dark, silent church on the night between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday by the low- est ranked in the clerical hierarchy – the deacon. Receiving Communion, churches and temples filled with flowers and colourful eggs, represent the typical scene for all Christian houses of worship during this great holiday.

All Christians believe that Lent should first be broken on Easter Sunday with an egg painted red, which symbolises both eternal life and fertility
