Dear Guests,
Jun je poseban mesec za Er Srbiju zato što proslavljamo dva važ- na jubileja – 90. rođendan naše kompanije 17. juna, kao i prvu godiš�- njicu leta za Nujork 23. juna. Prošlo je 90 godina od formiranja našeg prethodnika, avio-pioni- ra Aeroput iz 1927. godine, ali i dalje negujemo isti cilj - da našim go- stima bude što udobnije. Naša prva ruta koja je povezala Beograd i Zagreb izrasla je u mrežu sačinjenu od 42 destinacije, koja doseže preko Atlantika do Njujorka, do kog letimo do pet puta nedeljno na našem erbasu A330. Povrh toga, broj putnika koji lete s nama rastao je eksponenci- jalno od 1.300 u prvoj godini postojanja Aeroputa do 2,62 miliona u 2016. Taj broj i dalje raste, i u prvom kvartalu ove godine sa nama je letelo blizu 454.000 putnika, što je osam procenata više u odnosu na isti period prošle godine. Sigurni smo da će ovaj broj nastaviti da raste kako dalje razvija- mo naše proizvode i usluge i širimo našu mrežu. S tim u vezi, sa velikim zadovoljstvom mogu da najavim da će Er Srbija od 1. juna leteti za Veneciju, povezujući glavni grad Srbije i ču- veni Grad na vodi četiri puta nedeljno. Venecija je naša treća desti- nacija u Italiji, posle Milana i Rima. Ova destinacija pruža vam mno- go toga, možete da istražujete bogato kulturno nasleđe ili samo da u ovom prelepom gradu napravite predah tokom vikenda. Što se tiče drugih noviteta, trenutno renoviramo naše kabine na avionima A319 i A320 novim rekaro BL3520 sedištima. Ova nagrađivana ergonomska sedišta dizajnirana su tako da pruže vi- še mesta i omoguće veći smeštajni kapacitet na našim regionalnim i evropskim letovima. Osim toga, u ovom izdanju magazina Elevate otkrićete neve- rovatno delo podvodnog fotografa Ivane Orlović Kranjc, koja je na- pravila i prelepu fotografiju na naslovnoj strani, čitaćete o Hajlajnu, jedinstvenom parku na Menhetnu, saznaćete sve o prirodnom feno-� menu na reci Tisi i još mnogo toga. Uskoro ćemo izdati i specijalno izdanje magazina Elevate posve- ćeno 90. rođendanu koje ćete vrlo brzo imati priliku da čitate. Nadam se da ćete imati udoban let sa Er Srbijom i da ćete na- staviti da putujete s nama još mnogo godina.
June is a very special month for Air Serbia as we are celebrating two important milestones - our 90th anniversary on 17 June and the first birthday of our New York flights on 23 June. 90 years have passed since the formation of our predecessor, Aeroput, in 1927, but our goal of making travel more convenient for our guests has remained the same. Our first air link, connecting Belgrade to Zagreb, has grown into a network of 42 destinations that reaches all the way across the Atlantic to New York, where we fly up to five times weekly on our flagship Airbus A330. On top of that, the number of travellers that fly with us has risen exponentially from 1,300 in Aeroput’s first year of operation, to 2.62 million in 2016. That number is still growing and in the first quarter of this year, we flew close to 454,000 passengers, which is 8% more than in the corresponding period last year. We are confident this number will continue to increase as we develop our products and services even further and widen our network reach. On that note, I’m happy to announce that Air Serbia will launch flights to Venice on 1 June, connecting the Serbian capital and the famous City of Water four times per week. Venice is our third destination in Italy after Milan and Rome and has plenty to offer, whether you’re looking to explore its rich cultural heritage or just want a quick weekend break to a beautiful city. In other news, we are currently renovating our cabins on the A319 and A320 fleet with new Recaro BL3520 seats. These ergonomic, award- winning seats have been designed to provide more living space and will enable us to increase the seating capacity on our regional and European routes. Moreover, inside this edition of Elevate you can explore the work of underwater photographer Ivana Orlović Kranjc, who took the stunning image on the cover, read about the High Line railroad park in Manhattan, and learn about the beautiful natural phenomenon that takes place on the River Tisa every year, plus much more. We will also shortly be publishing a dedicated special edition of Elevate to celebrate our 90th anniversary that you can look forward to reading soon. A vio-kompanije povezuju daleka mesta na planeti či- neći da nam porodice, pri- jatelji ili poslovni partneri budu bliži. Zbog toga je posao srp- skog nacionalnog avio-prevoznika Er Srbije mnogo više od samog letenja. I zato se ovog 17. juna sećamo veličan- stvenih početaka, kada je istog datu- ma pre gotovo jednog veka, u palati Jadransko-podunavske banke u Be- ogradu osnovan Aeroput , prvo akci- onarsko preduzeće za civilni vazduš- ni saobraćaj. Aeroput je bio i tada među prvim civilnim avio-prevoznicima. U trenut- ku kada je osnovan, bio je 10. kompa- nija u Evropi i 21. u svetu. Kompanija osnovana još 1927, prvobitno pozna- ta kao Aeroput, a zatim, od 1947, kao JAT, osma je najstarija avio-kompani- ja na svetu koja još uvek postoji. Er Sr- bija nastavila je ovaj veličanstveni put svojih velikih prethodnika. Devedese- tu godišnjicu vazduhoplovstva, srpska avio-kompanija dočekuje kao pono- sni osvajač nagrade Lider na tržištu avio-kompanija za 2017 . godinu koju dodeljuje A ir Transport World (ATW), vodeći globalni medij za praćenje zbi- vanja u avio-kompanijama širom sveta. Slaveći jubilej, Er Srbija će moći da se pohvali činjenicom da se istori- ja piše i u ovom času. Vesna Aleksić oduvek je sanjala da leti za nacionalnu avio-kompani- ju, a po dolasku u Er Srbiju ne samo da je ostvarila taj cilj već je postala i prva žena na poziciji kapetana u na- šoj istoriji. I kao da to nije dovoljno, u anale će ući i 10. maj ove godine, ka- da je put Pariza sa beogradskog aero- droma uzleteo prvi avion sa komplet- no ženskom posadom. Danas je lako govoriti o uspesima kojima svedočimo svakoga dana, ali je 1. avgusta 2013. godine teško bilo pretpostaviti koliko će taj datum bi- ti značajan. Tog dana postavljeni su temelji koji će Er Srbiji omogućiti da zauzme mesto koje joj pripada među vodećim avio-kompanijama u regio- nu, sa novim imenom, novim izgle- dom, savremenim avionima i prvo- klasnom uslugom. Vlada Republike Srbije i Etihad ervejz 1. avgusta 2013. zaključili su ugovor na osnovu kojeg je avio-kompanija sa sedištem u Abu Dabiju stekla udeo od 49 odsto u srp- skom nacionalnom avio-prevozniku. Bilo je mnogo pitanja i još više ne- doumica. Uskoro je, međutim, posta- lo jasno da će JAT doživeti izvanred- nu transformaciju u Er Srbiju . Dolazak

A irlines connect distant places on the planet, bringing our fami- ly, friends or business partners closer. It is for this reason that the work of Serbia’s national airline, Air Serbia, involves much more than just fly- ing. And so this 17 th June we remember our magnificent beginnings, when on the same date some 90 years ago, in the Palace of the Adriatic-Danube Bank in Belgrade, Aeroput was founded as the country’s first joint-stock company for civil aviation. Aeroput was then also among the world’s first civilian airlines. At the time it was established, it was the 10 th such com- pany in Europe and the 21 st in the world. That company founded in 1927, which was originally known as Aeroput and then, from 1947, as JAT, is the eighth oldest airline in the world that still exists. Air Serbia has con- tinued this magnificent journey, carrying on the great legacy of its predecessors. The Serbian airline welcomes the 90 th anniver- sary of Serbian aviation as the proud winner of the 2017 Aviation Market Leader prize, which is awarded by Air Transport World (ATW), the world’s leading media monitor- ing developments in airlines worldwide. While celebrating this jubilee, Air Ser- bia will be able to boast of the fact that it is still writing history to this day. Vesna Alek- sić always dreamt of flying for the nation- al airline, and with her arrival at Air Serbia she not only realized that goal, but also be- came the first woman to hold the position of captain in our history. And as if that wer- en’t enough, she entered the annals of his- tory again on 10 th May this year, when the flight from Belgrade to Paris marked the first departure of a plane from Belgrade Airport with a completely female crew. Today it is easy to talk about the suc- cesses that we witness every day, but on 1 st August 2013 it was difficult to predict how significant that date would become. That day saw the laying of foundations that

Tome svakako do- prinosi pokretanje direktnih letova za Njujork u junu 2016. godine, čime je Er Srbija postala jedina avio-kompa- nija u jugoistočnoj Evropi koja nudi transatlantske letove za SAD. I ma koliko sve to bilo značajno za Srbiju, za vazduhoplovstvo i razvoj na svim nivoima, u korenu uspeha dugog 90 godina stoji putnik. Gost u avionu Er Srbije je neprikosnove- ni razlog da se avio-kompanija trudi i prilagođava, raste i napreduje, o če- mu najbolje svedoče reči Daneta Kon- dića, generalnog direktora nacional- nog avio-prevoznika. – Putnik je naš gost, on je u cen- tru pažnje svega što radimo i svi za- posleni u Er Srbiji su u službi putni- ka. Naš cilj je ambiciozan, ali jasan i dostižan, želimo da Er Srbija postane i ostane vodeća avio-kompanija u re- gionu, da bude široko prepoznata po vrhunskoj usluzi koju pruža svojim gostima. U svetu i delatnosti u koji- ma su problemi pravilo, a klijenti ni- kada nisu imali veći izbor, za nas gost i dalje ostaje u središtu svega što ra- dimo. Mi postojimo zbog vas. It was on that fateful 1st August 2013 that the Gov- ernment of the Republic of Serbia and Eti- had Airways concluded an agreement that saw this Abu Dhabi-based airline acquire a 49-per cent stake in Serbia’s national air- line. There were many questions and even more uncertainties. Soon, however, it be- came clear that JAT would experience an extraordinary transformation into Air Ser- bia. The arrival of the first A319 aircraft and its landing at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Interna-
tional Airport on 26 th October 2013 marked the start of the realisation of this vision. Today this company with an extraor- dinary past is continuing its rapid develop- ment and achieving ever more success in the commercial aviation sector. With reg- ular flights to an ever increasing number of destinations, a growing fleet of mod- ern aircraft, a global network of partners and strong growth in passenger numbers and revenue, Air Serbia proves on a daily basis that it is a worthy successor of JAT’s proud tradition. Certainly contributing to this was the launch of direct flights to New York in June 2016, with which Air Serbia
became the only airline in Southeast Eu- rope to offer transatlantic flights to the United States. And regardless of how significant all of this has been for Serbia, for aviation and for development at all levels, at the root of these 90 years of success is the passen- ger. Sva moja putovanja povezana su sa trkama, pa zato sa sobom uvek nosim kacigu i kompletnu trkačku opremu – patike, odelo, specijalne dukser gaće i majicu, rukavice i potkapu. Sa mnom je uvek i laptop i „goPro“ kamera jer bez svega toga ne mogu da vozim trku. Sa mnom na putovanja ide i supruga, pa sve to podelimo u dva prtljaga All of my travels are related to racing, so I always carry with me my helmet and complete racing equipment – shoes, suit, special insulated pants and t-shirt, gloves and a balaclava. I also always have with me my laptop and “GoPro” camera, because I can’t race without all of that. KO JE DUŠAN? Retko ko je tako zaljubljen u svoj posao kao ovaj Pančevac. Dušan je u petoj go- dini vozio motocikl, a u šestoj auto. Uz oca je naučio sve o automobilima i bio je siguran da će jednog dana biti profe- sionalni automobilista. Osvojio je 12 na- cionalnih šampionskih titula, tri Zlatne kacige i postao najmlađi osvajač Dija- mantske kacige . Danas je član NIS rej- sing tima i prvak Evrope. Ali ništa od to- ga ne smatra najvećim uspehom, već to što je posle toliko udesa i trka i dalje živ i zdrav.
WHO IS DUŠAN? Few are as in love with their job as this Panče- vo native. Dušan first drove a motorbike at the age of five and a car when he was six. Alongside his fa- ther, he learned everything about cars and was cer- tain that he would one day become a professional racing driver. He has won 12 national champion- ship titles, three Golden helmets and become the youngest winner of the Diamond helmet. Today he is a member of the NIS Racing team and a Europe- an champion. But he doesn’t consider any of that as his greatest success, but rather the fact that after so many accidents and races he is still alive and well.

GDE ŽIVE NAJBOLJI VOZAČI? Beograđani često zadirkuju Pančevce da su očajni vozači. Kad to čujem, sa- mo se nasmejem. Mislim da su to pre- drasude, a ja bih voleo da vidim Beo- građane kako voze kad, na primer, odu u Pariz. Šalu na stranu, mislim da su Srbi kulturni vozači. Ipak, najbolji vo- zači su u Švajcarskoj, Singapuru i Ja- panu. Tamo nijednu sirenu nisam čuo!
WHERE DO THE BEST DRIVERS LIVE? Belgraders often tease people from Pančevo for being terrible drivers. I just laugh when I hear this. I think that is a form of preju- dice, and I’d like to see how Belgraders drive when, for example, they go to Paris. Joking aside, I think Serbs are cultured drivers. How- ever, the best drivers are in Switzerland, Sin- gapore and Japan. I’ve never heard any si- rens in those places.

Paris Traditional jazz festival If you are a jazz lover, be sure to visit the French capital between 17 th June and 30 th July, when it will be hosting the famous Paris Jazz Festival. This will be an opportunity for you to enjoy a musical journey through Africa to the rhythms of the rock group Magma , followed by concerts of Raul Midon , an American songwriter, singer and guitarist, and the famous Lisa Simone . More than 30 concerts will be staged during the festival, while there will also be special workshops at which passionate jazz musicians will have the opportunity to learn everything they want to know about this musical genre from famous artists. Zagreb Book a table in the sky The global gastronomic attraction Dinner in the sky , which Forbes Magazine ranked among the ten most unusual restaurants in the world, returns to the Croatian capital from 22 nd to 25 th June. This unusual mobile restaurant, which is lifted to a height of around 50 metres above the ground using a special crane, can accommodate up to 22 guests. While guests enjoy the fantastic views, top chefs prepare a variety of specialities on an improvised plateau in front of them. To make the guests’ experience complete, during the evening this restaurant can rotate in a full circle. Larnaca Everything ready for Festival of the Flood Each June sees Larnaca host its festival of the deluge (Kataklysmos Festival). This event is considered this Cypriot city’s most important event, as it symbolically represents the traditional celebration of Noah and his salvation from the great flood. As such, activities on the water are obligatory during the festival, and from 2 nd to 6 th June this year both residents and tourists will be able to test their strengths in swimming, kayak races and windsurfing. Concerts are held in the evenings on the seashore, while there are also stalls selling traditional Cypriot souvenirs and sweets.

Zagreb Rezervišite sto na nebu Svetska gastro-atrakcija Dinner in the sky , koju je magazin Forbs uvrstio u deset najneobičnijih restorana na svetu, stiže ponovo u hrvatsku prestonicu od 22. do 25. juna. Reč je o neobičnom pokretnom restoranu koji se pomoću specijalnog krana podiže na oko 50 metara iznad zemlje, a može da primi 22 gosta. You can see an exhibition of the works of famous early-20 th century painter Giovanni Boldini in Rome until 16 th July. The Vittoriano Museum Complex is showing more than 160 works of this artist, who is remembered for painting a series of portraits in which he immortalised the most beautiful women of Parisian high society. Visitors will even have a chance to see his famous portrait of Donna Franca Florio, which represents a masterpiece and a symbol of the Belle Époque . Vienna Rockers’ party begins The Viennese rock festival, Rock in Vienna , is being held for the third time from 2 nd to 5 th June, while this will be the first time that it is to run for four days, the organisers announced. Another first for the festival is that, alongside rock music, other music genres will also be represented, including pop, hip hop and punk rock. The headline performers include the duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who will open the festival, as well as the group Kings of Leon and Die Toten Hosen. Tickets for this spectacle cost between €59.90 and €80. Tivat Žućenica fest, paradise for gourmets Have you ever tried dishes from wild chicory, an indigenous coastal edible wild herb? If not, head to Tivat on 17 th June and enjoy excellent specialities at the traditional Žućenica fest, which is organised each year with the aim of promoting the cuisine of the Bay of Kotor. That day sees a special jury award the most delicious and best-decorated dishes, while in the evening hours Tivat hosts parades of the inevitable majorettes and the famous Kotor Bay orchestras.

Zadivljujuće su identične. Prave se ručno, po propisima iz 19. veka. Svaka mora biti teška 700 kilograma – što je otprilike težina koncertnog klavira – dugačka 11 meta- ra, sastavljena od 280 delova i napravljena od osam vr- sta drveta. Na svakoj je leva strana 24 centimetra šira od desne. Izrada traje tri meseca i košta nekoliko dese- tina hiljada evra. Sve gondole su crne, prema zakonu iz 16. veka. Pre toga, plemstvo se nadmetalo u tome čija će gondo- la biti kitnjastija i raskošnije obojena. Prema drugom objašnjenju, crna je bila boja žalosti za hiljadama lju- di umrlim od kuge u 17. veku. Prema trećem, odabrana je zbog toga što je svetla put venecijanskih plemkinja uz nju najlepše dolazila do izražaja. Ipak, izgleda da je najtačnije da crna potiče od katrana kojim su se u po- četku gondole premazivale da ne bi propuštale vodu. Najprepoznatljivije obeležje je pramac, jedini metalni deo gondole, osim krme. Šest zubaca na prednjoj stra- ni pramca predstavlja šest delova Venecije (sestijeri), dok mali zubac na zadnjoj strani predstavlja venecijan- sko ostrvo Đudeku. Osim toga, pramac ima oblik slova S, što predstavlja oblik Velikog kanala. Nije lako postati gondolijer. Potrebno je izdržati 400 sati treninga, položiti rigorozan test iz istorije grada, tra- ži se i znanje stranih jezika, a pevački talenat je plus. Reč je o prestižnom poslu, koji se prenosi s kolena na koleno, a grad godišnje izda do četiri dozvole. Prva do- zvola za ženu gondolijera izdata je tek 2010. I da, odraće vas. Četrdesetominutna dnevna vožnja ko- šta oko 80 evra, a već posle sedam uveče 100 evra. Ako želite serenadu, biće skuplje. Da li vredi? Kada ste u Parizu, popećete se na Ajfelov toranj, u Njujorku na Em- pajer stejt bilding, a u Veneciji – u Veneciji ćete se vozi- ti gondolom.
Amazingly identical. Gondolas are made by hand, accor- ding to regulations from the 19 th century. Each must we- igh 700kg – which is roughly the weight of a grand pia- no – be 11 metres long, comprising 280 parts and made of eight different types of wood. On each of them the left side is 24cm wider than the right. Production lasts three months and costs several tens of thousands of euros. All gondolas are black , as required by a law from the 16 th century. Prior to that, the nobility competed to see whose gondola would be more lavishly painted. According to ano- ther explanation, black was chosen as the colour of mour- ning for the people who died from the plague in the 17 th century. According to a third theory, it was selected because the light path of Venetian noblewoman came to the fore the best with black. It seems that the most accurate explanati- on is that the black colour is a result of the tar that gondolas were initially coated with to ensure they wouldn’t leak. The bow is the most recognisable feature , as the only me- tal part of the gondola except the stern. The six prongs on the front of the bow represent the six parts of Venice (sestie- ri), while the small prong at the rear represents the Venetian island of Giudecca. Apart from that, the bow is also S-sha- ped, which represents the shape of the city’s Grand Canal. Becoming a gondolier isn’t easy. It is necessary to under- go 400 hours of training, pass a rigorous test on the history of the city, while knowledge of foreign languages is also so- ught and a talent for singing is an advantage. This prestigio- us job is transferred from generation to generation, while the City issues up to four licenses annually. The first ever li- cense for a female gondolier was only issued in 2010. And, yes, they’ll leave you penniless. A daily forty-minute ride costs around 80 euros, but after 7pm that price increa- ses to 100 euros. If you want to be serenaded, it will be more expensive. Is it worth it? When in Paris, you climb the Eiffel Tower, when in New York, you go to the top of the Empire State Building, and when in Venice – you ride a gondola.

Sven’s work was censored in East Ger- many, due to his cultivating of a specific visual identity that was not in accordance with the standard look of men in the socialist state. P očeo sam da pišem muziku, ali ne zbog neke tužne lju- bavne priče ili zbog slomlje- nog srca. Razlog je bio moj otac. Odmalena sam nosio bol u gru- dima jer ga nikada nisam zanimao. Počeo sam da pišem da isteram taj bol i iz srca su izašle reči o njemu. O nama, kaže čuveni džez pevač Gre- gori Porter. Četiri albuma i dva Gremija ka- snije, njegov baršunasti glas ostaje prepoznatljiva fanki fuzija džeza, blu- za, soula i gospela. Iz malih klubova u Njujorku, Porter je krenuo na neve- rovatno putovanje koje ga je dovelo do toga da ga Bi-Bi-Si nazove „zabri- njavajuce retkom vrstom“. Nedavno smo imali priliku da ču- jemo šta ima da kaže na koncertu u okviru festivala Musicology barcaffe . To je bio drugi put da je Porter na- stupao u Beogradu, a ta ljubav će, po svemu sudeći, potrajati... I came to write my own music not be- cause of some love story or due to some broken heart. It was my father. I had a pain in my chest about him not show- ing enough interest in my life as a child. So when I started to exorcise this pain in my heart it came out as melody and lyric about him, and our relationship”, said fa- mous jazz singer Gregory Porter. Four albums and two Grammys later, his velvety voice remains a funky fusion of jazz, blues, soul and gospel. From tiny club stages, Porter began a journey to become an African-American jazz singer — whom the BBC calls a “worryingly rare breed.” We recently had the opportunity to hear what he has to say at a concert in the framework of the Musicology Barca- ffe Festival. This was Porter’s second time in Belgrade, and this love is, apparently, here to stay… You were meant to be a football player, but one shoulder injury led you to a great path of music… - I had a torn right rotator cuff and I was never able to get my shoulder strong enough again. I remember standing in my apartment in San Diego, boohooing. But it turned out great. I think my mother saw the positive side of my injury before I did. She said - now you have more flexibility to
