Dragi gosti,

Dear Guests,

2016 was a year for the record books at Air Serbia. We wel- comed an Airbus A330 into our fleet and began flying non-stop to New York – the only airline based in Southeast Europe to do so. As we enter the New Year, we have similarly impressive plans in front of us. In 2017, we will mark the 90 th anniversary of our national airline, which was founded as Aeroput all the way back in 1927. It will be a chance to not only celebrate our history, but the incredible journey we have undertaken with Air Serbia. In just three years we have be- come the leading airline in the region, and we’re not stopping here. Air travel has evolved beyond recognition during the last nine decades. Gone are the days of having to buy a ticket in person or having one film playing on an overhead screen. Today, you can stream films, TV shows and music during a flight through our free El-

evate Play service, connect to the internet at 30,000 feet, or book a ticket on the web in minutes. Our plan is to go a step further in this di- rection this year. In April, just four months from now, Air Serbia will migrate to Sabre, a high-tech IT system. This project is one of our biggest technology upgrades in years and will rev- olutionise the services we offer, at every touchpoint in your journey.

As we enter the New Year, we have impressive plans in front of us

For example, if you are connecting to one of our codeshare flights at Nikola Tesla Airport, our switch to Sabre will allow us to more efficiently manage your transit, ensuring the experience is seamless. Many of the Etihad Airways Partner airlines also use Sabre and our systems will now better communicate and share messages about your journey. Speaking of codeshare flights, this edition of Elevate puts the spotlight on Abu Dhabi, a major hub in our network from where we offer connections to 23 cities with Etihad Airways. Abu Dhabi is a fascinating place where traditional souks sit beside the tallest sky- scrapers, mixing centuries-old tradition with modernity. We fly there daily from Belgrade and this is complemented by a daily service operated by Etihad Airways. I wish you a happy and successful year ahead and thank you for flying with Air Serbia. To everyone celebrating Orthodox Christmas and New Year in January, I hope you enjoy the festivities and good times with family and friends.

Čedomir Žarković managed to capture the unreal beauty of Stopića Cave in a single frame. That’s why this photo was declared 2016’s most beautiful picture of the world’s natural protected areas at the international Wikimedia photo contest “Wiki Loves Earth”. This wonder of nature is actually located on Zlatibor Mountain and represents the limestone basins of Stopića Cave.

Na putu / On the road

VASIL HADŽIMANOV, KOMPOZITOR I PIJANISTA VASIL HADŽIMANOV, COMPOSER AND PIANIST ŠTA UVEK NOSIŠ SA SOBOM? WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS CARRY WITH YOU?

Novo saznanje, otkrivanje sebe i nečeg drugačijeg... I go everywhere with the same bag. It is obligatory for it to contain an iPad, on which I have a lot of music. Of course, there are also comic books. On the plane I return to the classics – Dylan Dog, Martin Mystère etc. Travelling is dear to me in every sense. New knowledge, self-discovery and something different... Inspiraciju i dalje pronalazi u kombinaciji džeza, etno i fank zvuka. Tre- nutno sa članovima benda promoviše naj- noviji album Alive . To je njihov prvi živi al- bum. Imaju i specijalnog gosta – čuvenog američkog saksofonistu Dejvida Binija. Al- bum je objavila i američka izdavačka ku- ća MoonJune , a dobio je više od 50 recenzi- ja širom sveta. He graduated from Berkeley and is one of the few Serbian artists who has never ma- de compromises. He still finds inspiration in the combination of jazz, folk and funk so- unds. His band members are currently pro- moting their latest album, “Alive”, which is their first album of live performances. They also have a special guest, the famous Ame- rican saxophonist David Binney. The album has been released by American record label MoonJune, receiving more than 50 positive reviews worldwide so far.

I deal with instrumental music that is understood by the whole world. We perform everywhere, not only because of the quality of our performances, but also because we have no limits. Language is not a barrier for us.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN BELGRADE? • Those good old kafana inns. As a yo- ung man I often lost myself in our Ber- muda Triangle – “Šumatovac”, “Pod Li- pom” and “Grmeč”. Unfortunately, many of them have closed down. • For visitors, I recommend that they find locals who will take them to the best places and show them where best to eat and drink. • If we are talking about tradition, I always recommend the music of Ljubiša Pavković, our greatest accordion player, the special guardian of original songs. It would also be good for people to hear the songs of Brankica Vasić Vasilisa. • Košutnjak is a wonderful place to go walking. • The “Fest” club in Zemun, one of the few places where great rock music is performed.

OAZA

U gradskom ludilu i vrevi, on je pro- našao svoju oazu mira, lepote i ple- menitosti. Gde god da ste, prona- đite svoju.

OASIS

Even when sound engineer Mi- kael Van Driel is not in his trailer, lo- cated in one of the largest remaining Dutch squats, the beautiful sounds of classical music resonate around it. And while he selflessly shares melodies with others, he jealously protects for himself the books that enrich his inner world; a somewhat chaotic world that represents the most beautiful face of Amsterdam’s alternative art scene. In the madness and bustle of the city, he has found his own oasis of tranquillity, beau- ty and nobility. Wherever you are, find yours.

In some parts of Serbia, the česnica is kneaded from unleavened dough, with just a little salt and oil, while elsewhere it is enriched with milk, eggs and yeast, and in some places it is even made as a sweet cake, with honey and walnuts U nekim krajevima Srbije česnica se mesi od beskvasnog testa, tek s malo soli i ulja, dok se drugde obogaćuje mlekom, jajima i kvascem, a negde se pak pravi kao slatka pita s medom i orasima

the česnica would place a glove on his right hand, with which he pre- pared the bread, and cloak it with a sheet or animal hide, in order for the year ahead to be fertile. In some regions the česnica could only be kneaded by a woman who had giv- en birth to a male child, while in others care was taken to ensure this job was done by a young, healthy, diligent man. To make the česnica so-called “whole” water is always used, or wa- ter from a well or spring taken ear- ly on Christmas morning, and from which no one has drank. It is only the name of this ritual cake that is of Slavic origin, coming from the term čest – meaning part, share, which indicates the tradition of sharing the cake among all who attend the ceremony. The česnica is never cut, but rather is broken. Once upon a time it was broken only by men, with the oldest among them determin- ing which piece would go to whom in the household. That was during the time of large rural communities, which operated under a strict hierar- chy in every sense. At that time the česnica, which today contains on- ly a coin, was made with lots of so- called marks, or small objects sym- bolising crops and rural jobs. When the host divided the česni- ca , everyone would check to see what they had received in their part of the cake, and thus they knew which jobs would be their responsibility until the next Christmas.

Christmas breakfast. Although the Yule branch – as a particularly sym- bolic tree – and Christmas roast, or spit-roasted piglet, form the back- bone of Orthodox Christmas tra- ditions, česnica is the heart of this important ritual, as the cake that is awaited eagerly by everyone gath- ered around the festive table on 7 th January, when Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas. The story of the česnica predates the collective memory. This is an an- cient ritual bread, like the kind peo- ple from time immemorial offered to the gods to ensure prosperity, pro- gress and, above all, the fertility of the crops they lived from. As an inseparable part of the in- tangible heritage of Serbia, the česni- ca reflects the colourful interweav- ing of local beliefs and customs. Although it is basically a round bread loaf made from white flour, the česnica actually has a thousand faces, metaphorically speaking, de- pending on the traditions of each in- dividual region of Serbia or part of the world where Serbs live. In the not-so-distant past, when most of the Serbian population lived in the countryside, the česnica was kneaded by male crop farmers. It was believed that the crops depend- ed on it, so the preparation process was accompanied by specific rituals. The host-ploughman who prepared

As the eldest son, my father wakes me early, before sunrise. We’re going to cut the Yule branch. On the way he notes that I should be quiet, watch and learn how it’s done. When we find a tree, he greets it with the words: “Good morning, Yule branch”

Kao starijeg sina otac me budi rano, pre svitanja. Idemo da odsečemo badnjak. Usput napominje da ja treba da ćutim, gledam i učim kako se to radi. Kada nađemo drvo, otac ga pozdravlja rečima: „Dobro jutro, badnjače“

FIRST JOY

PRVA RADOST

Mother knits new sweaters for my brother and I, in order for us to be presentable for Christmas. She convenes a crowd. Girls come to help arrange the wool. They sing, two by two, as if out-singing each other to see who will sing more beautifully. At the same time the hands do not stop, spinning spindles, seemingly ever faster as the song progresses. At the end it is compulsory for both of them to scream and laugh in de- light. We children listen and even if we wanted to sleep we wouldn’t be able to. Towards the end the guys also come, as the yarn comes to an end. The girls leave ponytails. My brother and I bring gloves and hoods, knowing that they will play fota (spin the bottle). And the two of us get involved in the game. - What should this fota do? - Kiss Bojana – there is hysterical laughter when a boy should kiss her, but even more when it’s the girl’s turn. SECOND JOY As the eldest son, my father wakes me early, before sunrise. We’re going to cut the Yule branch. On the way he notes that I should be quiet, watch and learn how it’s done. When we find a tree, he greets it with the

Pred kraj dolaze i momci, predivo se privodi kraju. Devojke ostavlja- ju preslice. Brat i ja donosimo ru- kavice i kapuljače, znamo, igraće se fote. I nas dvojicu uključuju u igru. DRUGA RADOST Kao starijeg sina otac me bu- di rano, pre svitanja.

sklonjeni u stranu. Svako dobija deo i odmah traži zna- menje. Ko izvuče grafitno srce – do- bro će učiti, palidrvce – čuvaće ognji- šte, iver – staraće se o stoci i belom mrsu, novčić – zarađivaće pare cele godine.

and walnuts. Whoever gathers the most and the fastest gets a cake made from sundried prunes, but not on- ly for himself, rather to share with his brother. FOURTH JOY Christmas morning starts with us going to the Točak (wheel). My brother and I go to bring water from the tap for the česnica Christmas bread. We must look after the wa- ter and can’t drink from the tap or the jug. Mother and father have al- ready prepared various items: an old coin, the graphite core of a pen- cil and matches without phosphor- ic heads. Mother bakes the česnica bread and then the bearer of the light comes. He fans the fire on the hearth and, as sparks fly in all di- rections, he says loudly: “How many sparks, that much money!” When he finishes with the em- bers, the bearer heads to sit down, but someone pulls his chair out and he falls on his back. He, of course, expects this, so he gets up from the floor laughing and then says: “Where this sack fell, let there be happiness!” FIFTH JOY Christmas lunch. The breaking of the česnica bread. Everyone gets a piece and immediately looks for the symbols inside. Whoever pulls out the graphite core – will learn well; the match – will protect the hearth; the woodchip – will take care of live- stock; the coin – will make money for the whole year. If we don’t get lucky, so for instance I extract the coin, my father and I cross ourselves, then I say, “I’m just the messenger, you’re the owner!”, and give him the coin. Thus in the end everyone gets what belongs to them. We can hardly wait for mother to bring out the cured ham, cheese and curd cream, after the meatless Christmas fast. SIXTH JOY The next day we all go to church, to see the people, but also to see Fa- ther Dragi Tucović. He called me and my brother nephews, because our grandmother Jovanka was a Tucov- ić. It was mandatory for him to tug us by the ears and then say: “Be hap- py for me and grow big, nephews, chicks, Ršumovićs!”

words: “Good morning, Yule branch! Merry Christmas to you, and to us with you”. Then my father asks me which side is to the east. I show him and he starts chop- ping from that side. He catches the first chip with his hand, so it does not fall to the ground. He hands it to me, saying: “This woodchip, give it to your mother to put in a milk bowl, so she can catch cream as thick as that chip”. When he has chopped enough, he moves to the other side, to now chop from the west so the Yule branch falls to the eastern side. But before it falls fa- ther catches it again, then carries it home on his shoulder, holding it with a gloved hand. - The Yule branch must not be touched with bare hands – he notes. THIRD JOY In the evening father scatters straw around the house. Chairs and tables are placed to the side. Mother throws walnuts and hazelnuts over the straw, then spreads a colourful cloth in the middle of the house and arranges meatless Lenten dishes on it. We all take off our shoes and sit to eat. When we finish, mother yells out, “My little chicks, I do not hear chirping!” With that my brother and I start chirping and flying through the straw, before competing to see who can gather the most hazelnuts

Koliko varnica, toliko parica. Koliko varnica, toliko u toru ovaca. Koliko varnica, toliko prasadi i jaganjaca. Ko- liko varnica, toliko gusaka i piladi, a najviše zdravlja i veselja. P eople gather every Christ- mas Eve in front of Bel- grade’s St. Sava Temple to participate in the ritual burn- ing of the Yule log. This same ritual is performed in front of temples and churches across Serbia, and wherev- er Orthodox believers live. The Yule log is also lit in homes, on Christ- mas morning, usually with the words: “How many sparks, that much hap- piness. How many sparks, that much money. How many sparks, that many sheep in the pen. How many sparks, that many piglets and lambs. How many sparks, that many geese and chickens, and the most health and joy. Amen, God permitting.” Orthodox Christmas is accompa- nied by a specific atmosphere, an en- tire series of beliefs and customs, the primary objective of which is to em- ploy various rituals to ensure a good, fertile and rich year ahead. Christmas is a unique synthesis of monotheis- tic and pagan religions, the folk and the church, a family and national hol- iday. Although it cannot be accurate- ly determined when the mass cele- bration of Christmas began among Serbs, there is no doubt that certain forms of this holiday were respect- ed as far back as the Middle Ages.

In the days ahead of the New Year, girls have wis hed the most beautiful dresses, shoes and dazzling yo ung men who will fulfil all their wishes. Experienced la dies know that it is not others who fulfil their wishes, but they themselves. Boys have wished for expensive and fast cars, while experienced men already know that the fastest way to reach an objective is using one’s own ca pabilities, rather than an expensive vehicle. Therefore, a toast for experience is like Schweppes, acrid, bubbly, re freshing, vastly experienced and knowing that the best is yet to come after midnight. Let Santa Claus fulfil wis hes while you enjoy with experience everything that li fe offers in the next 365 days.
