WRAS LAUNCHES NEW SERVICES FOR MANUFACTURERS

The Water Regulations Approval Scheme (WRAS), an independent UK certification body for plumbing products and materials, has launched two new services to help speed up the product approval process for manufacturers. The Fast Track Assessment offers fast-track approval evaluations, with feedback being shared directly with the applicant at the same time as the laboratory – speeding up and improving communication channels.

WRAS also offers the Pre-Application Advice Service, which provides manufacturers pre-application advice to check if a product or material is appropriate to be certified by WRAS, as well as the specific requirements that need to be met during testing, before a full application is submitted. “We’ve introduced the two new services for several reasons,” Ian Hughes, WRAS’s Approvals Manager, commented, “We want manufacturers to be better

informed about regulations and WRAS requirements to avoid queries and delays, and make the approval process faster and more cost-effective.” Visit www.wrasapprovals.co.uk

DECARBONISATION

L-R: Declan Billington, Chair of CBI NI Energy Working group; Gordon Lyons MLA, Economy Minister; Michael McKinstry, Group CEO Phoenix; Kevin Hegarty, DAERA Director of Green Growth & Climate Change.

THE RENEWABLE GAS CONFERENCE DISCUSSED THE OPPORTUNITY TO DECARBONISE THE GAS NETWORK WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF RENEWABLE GAS ALTERNATIVES SUCH AS BIOMETHANE AND GREEN HYDROGEN… Phoenix Gas promotes debate on the journey to decarbonisation

T he opportunity for Northern Ireland to be a leader in the delivery of a new renewable gas future was the focus of a landmark conference held by Phoenix Natural Gas in Belfast in October. With contributions from leading local and international speakers, the 250 delegates at the Renewable Gas Conference learned more about the opportunity to decarbonise the gas network with the introduction of renewable gas alternatives such as biomethane and green hydrogen, providing clean energy solutions for the 550,000 homes and business that have access to the existing gas network. Conference delegates heard from Gordon Lyons MLA, Minister for the Economy, who delivered a keynote address on the potential for us regionally to become leaders in indigenous energy production and the significant role that the modern gas network can play in delivering renewable gas solutions. Speakers from Queen’s University Belfast, Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Catagen,

SGN, B9 Energy, Translink, Renewable NI, the Consumer Council NI, KPMG, and John Thompson and Sons Ltd further discussed the opportunity for local energy decarbonisation, demonstrating that the transition to renewable gas solutions can positively benefit the whole of society. Providing an international insight on decarbonisation, delegates heard from Torben Brabo, Director of International Relations at Energinet, the Danish national transmission system operator for gas and electricity. In 2022, biomethane production is expected to make up for 30% of total gas consumption and Torben explained its importance in delivering the Danish Government ambitions of 100% green gas coverage by 2030. Opening the Phoenix Renewable Gas Conference, Michael McKinstry, Chief Executive Officer at Phoenix Natural Gas highlighted how well placed NI’s energy landscape is to transition to a renewable gas economy and commented, “The region has a rich source of indigenous resources which support both waste-to-

energy projects as well as the production of green hydrogen.” Michael further advised, “The extensive investment in the modern gas infrastructure over the last two decades will play a pivotal role in the delivery of integrated energy solutions which will drive decarbonisation locally”. Concluding the Conference, Jonathan Martindale, Director of Business Development at Phoenix Natural Gas, reflected on the key takeaways from the inaugural Renewable Gas Conference with a particular focus on how a collaborative, partnership approach across the energy sector will materially increase the successful delivery of energy transition locally.

GAS INDUSTRY’S TRANSITION PATHWAY

PHOENIX NATURAL GAS EXPLAINS THE GAS NETWORKS’ ROLES IN THE TRANSITION TO BIOMETHANE AND GREEN HYDROGEN ON THE PATHWAY TO NET ZERO IN NI, AND WHAT THE SWITCHOVER MEANS FOR CONSUMERS… A smooth transition Iain Hoy, Energy Transition Manager, Phoenix.

O ne of the most modern in since it was launched 25 years ago. However, on the pathway to becoming Net-Zero by 2050, the time has come to transition away from the distribution of natural gas to renewable gases like green hydrogen and biomethane. To inform the population and reassure them at every step during the transition, Phoenix Natural Gas and the other NI Gas Network Operators – firmus energy, GNI Europe, Northern Ireland’s gas network has expanded rapidly (UK), Mutual Energy and SGN Natural Gas – have developed a Pathway to Net-Zero document which details the switchover. BOILER-READY According to Phoenix, the good news is that the region’s gas network is suitable for an affordable and non- disruptive transition. “The pipe network in Northern Ireland is relatively new, with plastic pipes, which are suitable for

the distribution of both biomethane and hydrogen,” explained Iain Hoy, Energy Transition Manager at Phoenix Natural Gas. “A 100% green hydrogen supply is still a little way off, but our gas network is a lot more suitable to hydrogen in comparison to networks in Great Britain that are using legacy iron pipes. It is a great opportunity.” With a switch to biomethane, there will be no need for consumers to buy new boilers. “If the consumer joins a biomethane supply, they don’t have to worry about changing anything. It is only a matter of changing the gas,” Iain commented. According to Iain, it is possible to introduce green hydrogen as up to 20% of the supply of existing natural gas or biomethane, as the boilers will function normally, which is still a huge win for the environment. However, if the proportion goes above 20%, it will be necessary to switch to a 100% green hydrogen network. “The predicted timeline for a consumer to switch to 100% green

hydrogen is uncertain but due to the fantastic innovative work by the leading boiler manufacturers, by the middle of this decade, 100% hydrogen-ready boilers and appliances will become standard, meaning any appliance installed will be 100% compatible and ready to go.” NATURAL CYCLE The switchover won’t happen overnight. The timeline proposed by Phoenix and the other gas distributors predicts a gradual increase of biomethane and hydrogen in the gas network over the next 20 years. “Transitioning to a 100% renewable gas network involves long lead in times and we have been very transparent about that, but we are confident we will be net-zero by 2050,” Iain said. It is still early to talk about grants to consumers who wish to avail of the new technologies, but the future hydrogen- ready boilers are predicted not to be much more expensive than existing boilers and they are expected to be competitive

“Successfully completing the energy transition by 2050 will require the utilisation of a range of low-carbon heating solutions.”

with other net-zero compliant options such as heat pumps. As Iain explained: “Successfully completing the energy transition by 2050 will require the utilisation of a range of low-carbon heating solutions. Electric based heating solutions such as heat pumps will certainly play a role but every house, business and user is different, and what works for one may not work for another. “Ensuring that consumers have a choice is very important and that’s why we are working to ensure that those homes and businesses which are, or could be, connected to the gas network have access to a supply of renewable gases. With that in place, experts such as plumbers and heat engineers can advise homeowners of the best approach to suit the needs of their home – renewable gas boiler, heat pump or indeed a hybrid of the two – along with the most economic energy efficiency measures. “A gradual approach to transitioning

the network also allows homeowners to adopt a gradual approach to boiler replacement. The hope is that you won’t have to pre-emptively remove your boiler to put a hydrogen ready one in, it should be when the natural lifecycle of the legacy boiler has come to an end.” EXCITING TIMES 2030 is right around the corner for the country to reduce emissions by 80%, and at Phoenix Natural Gas the transition plan is rolling full steam ahead. “The next step will be connecting the first biomethane producers to the network and managing that process,” Iain commented. Regarding the workforce necessary to make the transition happen, Iain said working on the distribution of renewable fuels is a transferable skill. “Biomethane and green hydrogen have different properties, but they are essentially gas, so it wouldn’t be very different for

people who work in the industry now and already have the necessary base skillsets. “Northern Ireland already has an existing skilled gas workforce of over 2,500 people, including plumbers and engineers, who already deliver a trusted, quality, service to gas users across the province. There will be great opportunities for this workforce in the future as it drives forward the large-scale installation of future low carbon heating solutions in every home and business over the next three decades. “In preparation for the changes coming down the line, all members of the industry should consider further honing and enhancing their existing skills by taking advantage of hydrogen training options. In particular, the Hydrogen Training Academy at Ballymena is an excellent local resource which will help prepare the industry for the upcoming introduction of a hydrogen blend into the existing natural gas supply. I would encourage industry members to make full use of it,” Iain said.

GAS INDUSTRY’S TRANSITION PATHWAY

PLAN DEVELOPED BY PHOENIX NATURAL GAS AND THE OTHER NI GAS NETWORK OPERATORS CHARTERS THE TRANSITION OF NATURAL GAS TO BIOMETHANE AND GREEN HYDROGEN TO HELP REACH DECARBONISATION GOALS… NI Gas Network Pathway to Net Zero

S ince 1996, Northern Ireland’s structure in place across the country will soon be distributing renewable gases such as biomethane and green hydrogen to meet the challenge of decarbonisation. Phoenix Natural Gas and the other NI Gas Network Operators (GNOs) – firmus energy, GNI (UK), Mutual Energy and modern gas network has delivered significant carbon savings, and the SGN Natural Gas – have developed a Pathway to Net-Zero plan to detail the switchover and ensure a smooth transition. The Pathway to Net-Zero aims at an affordable and non-disruptive change to renewable gases, in which consumers can continue to enjoy all the convenience and benefits of a gas heating system while helping the country reach the zero emissions goal by 2050. GREENER ALTERNATIVES NI’s £1 billion modern plastic pipe gas network is suitable for re-purposing to

renewable gases biomethane and green hydrogen. As you can see on page 8, the boilers used for natural gas are perfectly suitable for biomethane, and consumers won’t have to make any changes. Existing boilers can safely handle a 20% hydrogen blend in the existing gas supply but will need to be upgraded to accommodate a 100% hydrogen gas supply. The NI GNOs will also manage the conversion process in a phased manner to ensure consumers enjoy a seamless switch. The good news is that, unlike the case with fossil fuels, there is no need to go too far to source both renewable gases. Biomethane is a non-fossil source of energy produced from biogas derived from organic waste, which can come from landfill, food waste, livestock waste or underutilised grassland. A collaborative research project has revealed that NI can produce more biomethane from agricultural waste and underutilised grassland than previously

thought possible, amounting to 82% of the 2021 regional distribution network demand. Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, using the electric current from renewable electricity generation to separate Hydrogen and Oxygen from water. Its availability depends on the country’s capacity to produce renewable electricity to power the electrolysis, and NI can rely on its excellent wind resources to generate energy and potential large capacity underground renewable gas storage at Islandmagee, in Co. Antrim. PRICE MAKER With the conflict in Ukraine and fuel prices and electricity bills going up, biomethane and green hydrogen supplies also mean financial security for the country. “With the indigenous production of renewable gases, Northern Ireland could become a price maker rather a price taker, as the region could also export the energy produced here,” explained Iain Hoy,

“Reaching the hydrogen production targets could generate 12,000 jobs.”

BIOMETHANE PRODUCTION PROCESS

GREEN HYDROGEN PRODUCTION PROCESS

One step at a time

Energy Transition Manager at Phoenix Natural Gas. “It is also a matter of circular economy, as the country can decarbonise the agriculture sector by producing biomethane, and then put the energy into the system to decarbonise heating or use excess renewable electricity generation to produce more green hydrogen, which again can be used for heating or stored.” The new model will also create a lot of opportunities in the job market. The UK government predicts that reaching the hydrogen production targets could generate 12,000 jobs, a significant proportion of which could be created in Northern Ireland. “The Pathway to Net-Zero aims at an affordable and non- disruptive change to renewable gases.”

The gas network distributors’ Pathway to Net-Zero has been divided in six stages to guide the ongoing efforts to decarbonise the network. The first two stages are well underway, especially regarding biomethane. The biomethane regulatory framework is expected to be largely in place by the end of 2022 and the GNOs expect to begin injecting renewable gas into the network in early 2023. 1 Preparing for the transition (2022-2025) – Strategic planning with an emphasis on regulatory frameworks, research, and consumer stakeholder engagement.

2 3 4 5 6

Establishing Supply and Demand (2026-2030) – Biomethane and green hydrogen production levels steadily climb allowing demand sectors – industry, transport, power – to begin to transition to renewable gases. Roll-out of hydrogen-ready gas boilers begins. First Renewable Gas Connections (2022-2026) – Establishing biomethane and green hydrogen production to facilitate the injection of renewable gas into the network; specific trial projects to test delivery. Home Stretch (2040-2049) – With green hydrogen-ready boilers widely installed in NI homes, the focus will be to switch users not already benefiting from biomethane to a 100% hydrogen supply. Accelerated Ambition (2030-2040) – Expansion of biomethane and green hydrogen production, supporting significant advances in the decarbonisation of industry, transport, and power generation. A Zero-Carbon Gas Network (2050) – Natural gas is entirely replaced by green hydrogen and biomethane, offering zero-carbon solutions to residences, services, power, industry and transport sectors.

THE AMALGAMATED PLUMBING AND HEATING CONTRACTORS OF IRELAND SEND THEIR CONDOLENCES TO THE RESIDENTS OF CREESLOGH AND MAKE OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS… News from the APHCI

A s we move into the dark residents of Creeslogh in Donegal and the tragedy that has decimated their community, especially with the families whose loved ones were taken from them or seriously injured. It is said that time is a great healer, and we hope that winter evenings, our thoughts and sympathies are with the everyone will regain the strength to move on with their lives. We hope that the investigations can pinpoint the exact cause to eliminate the possibility of a reoccurrence elsewhere. PLUMBEX Thanks to all who visited us at our stand at PLUMBEX, it was an excellent show and well worth a visit. We had a very busy two days, and it was great to reconnect with the old guard while welcoming the many new faces interested in coming on board. SGS IRELAND Following a tender process, the CRU appointed SGS Ireland as the single Safety Supervisory Body (SSB) that

will operate the Safe Electric and RGI Schemes from January 2023. They will also operate the Electrical (Safe Electric) scheme. We would like to thank the outgoing operators who have guided the scheme from day one to date for a job well done. We also take this opportunity to welcome SGS and look forward to meeting with them. The transition will be almost seamless and there will be no change as far as gas installers are concerned. EVERY LITTLE HELPS Winter is upon us, and the cost of heat and energy is a real issue this year. Thankfully, we can all identify minor and cost-effective ways of saving a little, from ensuring that radiators in unused rooms are off to dialling down the boiler thermostat by 5 or 10 degrees. Other suggestions include insulating pipework in unheated areas, servicing the boiler, adding extra attic insulation and draft excluders to doors and windows, leaving the boiler on for long enough to make a difference, closing unused chimneys, and turning

off unused appliances. Those who can afford to will look into upgrading their insulation and heating systems but unfortunately, they are the minority. SAFETY ALWAYS We have a few working weeks before Christmas, the time we all refer to as the “silly season.” Just remember, “keep safe and work safely. Safety is a frame of mind 24 hours a day, every day.” If you are either a sole trader or a larger contractor in the plumbing, heating, ventilation, or allied trades don’t forget to take a few minutes to join the APHCI. TIME AND COST-EFFECTIVE Many different fitting types can be pressed in under 10 seconds, a drastic time saving over more traditional methods. In addition, pressing is approximately 30% less expensive when compared to welding. It also is easier to learn pressing than welding or soldering, which means a newly trained professional can start work sooner, giving more experienced personnel the time for jobs that require higher skills. Another advantage is that the technique delivers more consistent and secure connections, as the pressing tool is designed and calibrated to apply the exact amount of force needed to form a permanent, watertight joint. SPECIAL OFFER Bassetts offers an exclusive PressIt Tool Pack, which comprises a REMS Mini-Press 22V, two batteries, three jaws and a charger. It is offered at fixed price of £1,295 +VAT – which is highly competitive. Bassetts are the only company to offer both the tool and a

It presses up to 35mm copper and stainless steel and, with up to 250 presses per charge, the REMS Mini-Press 22V is not only efficient but also guarantees a safer and more reliable job. TURN DOWN THE HEAT Other techniques to join pipes, such as welding, soldering and torch cutting generate heat and fumes, posing a workplace danger, and can require additional safety equipment. According to data from the UK Home Office, the so-called “hot work” accounts for around 28% of construction fires. On the other hand, pressing is flameless, which eliminates the need for flux, flammable gases, or fumes. Plus, it is not necessary to spend money on hot work permits, which ensure that individuals involved in the project are aware of the hazards associated with this kind of work and can rely on
