Dragi gosti, Lideri smo u uslugama koje pružamo gostima

Dear Guests, Leading the way in guest experience

When we launched Air Serbia, our vision was to be the best airli- ne in Southeast Europe, and to do that we placed a huge emphasis on guest experience. We introduced web check-in, launched a new service called Wi-Fly, allowing you to connect to the internet on our flights, debuted Eleva- te Play, our content streaming service, started offering the Sky Au Pa- ir inflight childcare service on our New York flights, and just over a year ago, opened the doors to our Premium Lounge at Nikola Tesla Airport. Today, our offering is easily up there with the best. I recently had the pleasure of talking to some guests, who were having a bite to eat at our Premium Lounge before their flight to New York. I was delighted to hear that they had really enjoyed its ambien- ce, excellent service and stylish setting. As soon as they step inside, guests are welcomed to the Premi- um Lounge by our attentive, friendly staff. We have a great buffet service for those on the go, while travellers with a bit more time ha- ve a restaurant-quality selection of à la carte meals, including tho- se for children with signature dishes such as ‎ćevapčići and mućkali- ca. The finest Serbian beverages are available including rakija and top wines. Trained baristas from Kafeteria also serve special artisan roa- sted coffee. When you factor in deluxe showers and modern business facili- ties, it’s easy to see why our Premium Lounge has proven so popu- lar, welcoming more than 23,000 travellers over the past 12 mont- hs alone. As we move forward, we are committed to pushing the envelo- pe further when it comes to our products and services, to make sure you have the best experience possible with Air Serbia. As part of this we are especially looking forward to switching to the Sabre reservati- on system in early 2017, which will enable us to introduce many exci- ting innovations for you. We’re also coming up to our third anniversary on 26 October and in the next edition of Elevate, our inflight magazine, you’ll be able to read a special retrospective of our many achievements so far. I hope you enjoy this flight and thank you once again for cho- osing Air Serbia.

Marina Evgrafova Mihajlović wrote the story of Matryoshka. She has spent 30 years living in Belgrade. A musician by profession, she has devoted herself completely to her desire to bring Serbs closer to Russia. Which is how she created the bookshop Russian book 14 years ago.

GLUMICA / ACTRESS JELISAVETA ORAŠANIN

SELFIE: WHAT DO YOU TAKE ONBOARD? SA SOBOM U AVION? SELFI: ŠTA NOSITE Sa sobom uvek vodim moju malu jazavi- čarku Ljubicu. Udomila sam je pre pet me- seci.

Jelisaveta is 27 years old and knew she would be an actress from the age of four. You can see her in the TV shows “The murderers of my father” and “Military Academy”, and also in many performances of the Belgrade Drama Theatre. She rarely remembers positive critiques, usually focusing on what she needs to change. Jelisave- ta’s not afraid of anything and cannot stand uneducated “types”. She trained rowing, and has another passion – fo- reign languages.

I always carry with me my li- ttle dachshund Ljubica. So, when I set out she is in one hand and my handbag is in the other, and in it I have earplugs, headphones for music, perfume, a book and sun- glasses. On the plane I’m pretty antisocial, I guess that’s becau- se I’m usually dead tired when I set off. My glasses protect me from the light that comes throu- gh the window, and I enjoy a bo- ok. When I get bored of reading, I listen to music. I also always ha- ve high heels with me. A woman never knows when she will need them, just like red lipstick.

Šta vam je na umu / What’s on your mind

Scena / The Scene

Trka

Race

Mornings in Belgrade are beautiful, with the city breathing after a wild night, but that September morn was special. The streets were buzzing with old-timers, and in the background could be heard sighs of delight. The cultu- red world came out in elegant dresses and suits to greet participants in the Memorial Grand Prix Belgrade. That’s also just how it was on 3 rd September 1939. More than 75,000 people had gathered along the Kalemegdan circuit, and the best drivers competed in racing cars. That was the last Grand Prix to be held at the beginning of World War II, and it was staged in honour of the young King Peter II Karađorđević. This year, under the organisation of 24 Hours of Elegance (www. 24hoursofelegance.com ) , Belgrade celebrated 77 years of our grand prix.

ONCE I ONLY THOUGHT ABOUT GIRLS, NOW I THINK ABOUT TREES O As I get n je britanski pisac i svetska zvezda.

He is a British writer and world star. His books have been translated into more than 40 lan- guages, and he was brought to Serbia by the publishing house “Laguna”. On the eve of the 61 st In- ternational Belgrade Book Fair, he revealed to us that he is just fini- shing his fourth instalment abo- ut London-based detective Max Wolfe Two years ago you were a special guest of the Belgrade Book fair. What recollections do you have of this event? The Belgrade Book Fair attra- cts readers and that is why it is the best of the book fairs. Frankfurt is all about business. London is mostly about business. Both Lon- don and Frankfurt forget that the most important thing is writers and readers. Belgrade Book Fair celebrates the bond between wri- ters and readers. And of course every writer is also a reader. Wri- ting is a lonely process – you are

Kako biste opisali svoju publiku u Srbiji?

Londona i Beograda? I sami ste imali mnogo uspona i padova. Svi imaju dobre i loše faze u životu. Spremate novu knjigu? Koje vas teme inspirišu? – Trenutno pišem seriju krimi-novela o london- skom detektivu Maksu Vulfu. Upravo završavam knji- gu broj četiri, a onda ću napraviti pauzu jer moram da smislim šta će se dešavati u knjigama pet i šest. Posle toga ne znam šta ću raditi, verovatno ću se posvetiti pisanju psiholoških trilera.

not doing your job unless you are sitting alone in your room. But I am never lonely in Serbia, thanks to all my readers in that beautiful country. How would you describe them? I am very lucky with my rea- ders, because they are knowledge- able, passionate and friendly. On my very first trip to the Belgrade Book Fair, there was not enough time to meet everyone because in- terviews had been scheduled for later in the day. Now we no longer make that mistake. And everyone seems to go home happy! You came to Belgrade for the first time 40 years ago. Co- uld you tell us what impres- sions you carry from our ca- pital? It must have been 1973. What I remember about that trip – I arri- ved by train and I was spending a couple of months wandering Eu- rope – was that everyone said that when you get to Belgrade you just walk through the streets and so- meone will shout out of a window and ask you if you need a room for the night. And that is exactly what happened! A lovely old Bel- grade lady gave me a room for the night and in the morning her son came round and we had a drink of some incredibly strong alcohol before breakfast. I have no idea what it was! What I remember is a very friendly city where everyone seemed happy to see me although I was just a 20-year-old kid with no money in his jeans. Do you like to travel? I do like to travel, although as I get older I get fussier about where I travel to – I mostly like to go to places I have been to befo- re, I guess. When I was growing up I came from a poor family and we never went abroad – apart from Norway, where one of my mum’s six brothers had settled af-

ter the war. So every two years we would go to see my uncle and his Norwegian family – but we wo- uld never fly, we would catch the ferry to Oslo or drive across Den- mark. So for years, after I beca- me a journalist, it was exciting to catch a plane. My wife is Japane- se and we go there once or some- times twice a year. I have a clo- se friend who has lived in Hong Kong and I go there once or twice a year. I do like to be on a long- haul twelve-hour flight becau- se then you are completely dis- connected from the world for a while, and I think that is healthy for a writer. Do you notice any similari- ties between Brits and Ser- bs? London and Belgrade?

Ove go- dine svoju prelepu književnost predstaviće nam Iran.

I don’t think London is like anywhere else in the world, be- cause I think everyone comes to London – and I don’t think that’s true of anywhere else, not even New York or Tokyo. The thing that is common among both Ser- bs and Brits is that they are hard to get to know, but once you be- come their friend, or once they like you, then you have a friend for life – a real friend. We live in hectic times, mad- ly racing for happiness, yet there have never been more sorrowful people. In your opinion, what is the biggest mistake of modern men? As I get older, I think the greatest solace for modern man is found in nature. Nothing gi- ves me such peace as walking my dog in miles of forest. When I was young, I used to think abo- ut girls all the time. But now I think about – trees! Why is there an increase in divorces? Why don’t people believe in family anymore? I think people think that they deserve more than one chance at getting love right. And I think

that’s true – you do get more than one chance. But the mistake peo- ple make is thinking that we get endless chances to get it right. And we don’t – we run out of time. You yourself had ups and downs in life. What motiva- ted you to move forward? It is a joy and a blessing to do something you love as a job. And writing – certainly writing novels – is also a kind of therapy; it helps you to make sense of the world. Everyone has ups and downs in their life. I think I have been luc- kier than most. But what makes me keep writing is that I think I would curl up and die if I didn’t! Are you preparing a new book? What topic currently inspires you? At the moment I am writing a series of crime novels about my London Detective, Max Wolfe. I am just finishing number four and then I will take some time to work out what happens in bo- oks five and six. So I am writing a six-book series in six years. Af- ter that, I don’t know what I will do – I think probably a psycholo- gical thriller.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO THE FAIR?

We adore Fest and we’re proud of Bitef, but the most common question every year in the last week of October is - when are you going to the Book Fair? For the 61 ye- ars that it has existed it has become ever more serious, beautiful, bigger. It is irresistible for locals, for guests, for those who like to read as well as for those who live from books. To walk the central streets of Borislav Pekić and Ivo Andrić, the wreaths of Miloš Crnjanski and Danilo Kiš, means to see almost all of the more important figures of literature in a country in which, despite everything, many both read and write. The Book Fair is a meeting place for friends, readers and writers, publishers and some futu- re literary figures, but it’s also a place that reveals almost the entire literary production during the year. It is provi- ded with a nice flavor each year by the special guest of honour country. This year will see Iran present its beauti- ful literature to us.

ANTONIO SERANO NA BEOGRADSKOM DŽEZ FESTIVALU ANTONIO SERRANO AT THE BELGRADE JAZZ FESTIVAL SVE JE TO BLUZ! WHAT IS COMMON TO FLAMENCO AND JAZZ? IT IS ALL BLUES!

Antonio svira mnogo instru-

The Belgrade Jazz Festival is once again bringing the Serbian capital into the centre of cultural events this autumn. Under the slo- gan “Planet Jazz”, this year’s 32nd edition of the festival presents the world’s greatest jazz artists, inc- luding the best flamenco jazz qu- artet in the world, “Flame & Co”, which is led by brilliant Spaniard Antonio Serrano. On 27th October at the Sava Centre the public will be able to enjoy the wonderful sounds of his harmonica, which he began playing when he was only seven years old. In this exclusive inter- view for Elevate, Serrano says that his father is to blame for that love. - My father was a man of scien- ce who had an amazing passion for music and especially for the harmonica. What he learned from studying engineering he applied to teaching, and I benefited a lot from that. For me, it was like a game. It was only years later that I decided I wanted to be a professi- onal. I wanted to be like my father. It was not long before that- Serrano received call from the gre- at Larry Adler. Larry heard him play in 1987 at a harmonica festi- val and invited him to play in Pa- ris. Serrano was only 13 years old at the time. - I was excited, but I was too young to really understand the si- gnificance of what happened. But there is one thing I learned from Larry that I never forgot: you have to love what you do. Serrano play lots of instru- ments, but has chosen the

Flamenko je veoma sofisticiran. Da biste ga svirali, morate biti puni strasti, ali i ozbiljno poznavati ritam, melodiju i harmoniju Flamenco is very sophisticated. To play it requires a lot of passion, but also an understanding of rhythm, melody and harmony.

harmonica as the main one be- cause, as he says himself, it’s what he plays best. His harmonica mo- ves easily through jazz, pop, fla- menco and classical music. He finds himself at home in all these genres… - I feel comfortable in any situ- ation where I can express myself freely, regardless of the style. Jazz was not my first choice, but then I heard Louis Armstrong and Toots Thielemans. They blew my mind! Serrano combines flamenco, which is authentically Spanish, with jazz, which is authentically Ameri- can, and has a very interesting an- swer to the question of where is the connection between the two… - In the Blues! African Ame- rican and Spanish gypsies have suffered in similar ways throug- hout history and what they expre- ss through their music is a similar feeling, although technically they are very different. For me, flamen- co is a very sophisticated kind of popular music. To play it requires a lot of passion, but also a serious understanding of rhythm, melody and harmony. He was lucky to spend ten ma- gical years playing with one of the greatest guitarists in the wor- ld, the unforgettable Paco de Lu- cia, which gave him a lot of expe- rience. “He was a genius and I feel very lucky to have attracted his attention”, says Serrano, who has also played with many top pop and rock artists in Spain, and made an contribution to music for the films of the great Spanish dire- ctor Pedro Almodóvar. - Alberto Iglesias, who wrote the scores, wanted a harmonica and called me in for the recording sessi- on. I didn't meet Pedro until many years later. Although Serrano is the grea- test at what he does, he has remai- ned modest and dedicated to hard work. That is actually what he te- aches those who look up to him as a role model. He says: Work hard and focus on one thing at a time. Also, don't forget that music is more about listening than abo- ut playing. So, even now, he is still searc- hing for beautiful sounds, claiming that there is no end to music. - Music will always exist and evolve.

Deset godina Antonio je svirao sa Pakom de Lusijom, za kojeg kaže da je genije Antonio played with Paco de Lucia for ten years, saying that he was a genius

– Muzika će uvek postojati, uvek će se menjati i transformisati – kaže on.

Zar to nije dovoljno? BELGRADE IS IN HIS MIND Serrano performed with Paco de Lucia at the Guitar Art Festi- val in Belgrade in 2010, and has never forgotten the Serbian ca- pital. He enjoyed a nice dinner at a restaurant with live mu- sic that he can still recall. Serra- no will be playing in Belgrade again courtesy of the Cervan- tes Institute. Having been born in Madrid, his parting words are that everybody should vi- sit thecity at least once in the- ir lifetime. - People are friendly, the wo- men are beautiful and the food is excellent! Do you need anyt- hing more?
