The President: Ivor Warburton MA MSc (57-65) ..........................................................................................................

Ivor Warburton was at the College between 1957 and 1965, during which time he played bassoon in the orchestra, was a member of the Scouts and, in his final year, was School Captain and received an honours cap for playing 1st XV rugby. At Queens’ College, Cambridge, he read Mathematics and then Oriental Studies (Chinese). Graduating in 1968, he joined British Rail London Midland Region as a management trainee. In a career of more than 30 years (including a year doing a degree in Management and Business Studies at Warwick) his jobs included local operations, selling the rail passenger business around the world and senior positions such as Director of Passenger Marketing, principal negotiator with the trades unions and Director of Rail Operations. He went on to serve as General Manager of the London Midland region in 1990, a post held when he had joined 22 years earlier by Sir Robert Lawrence OA. Upon privatisation he served as both a director of Virgin Rail Group and Chairman of the rail passenger franchise trade association, ATOC. Ivor was a Fellow of the Chartered Institutes of Marketing, and Logistics and Transport, and a Liveryman of the Marketors’ Company. After several seasons as a tour manager, leading groups across North America, Europe and North Africa by train, he spent three years living in China as General Manager of a joint venture with part of the Ministry of Railways to develop luxury tourist trains. His current interests include walking, classical music and high speed rail developments in China, together with an insatiable appetite for world travel, particularly to Arctic and Antarctic regions. He became a trustee of the OA Endowment Fund in 2006 and is currently its Chairman. During 2015 Ivor will be travelling throughout the world to meet Old Alleynians and strengthen the bonds between the ‘Dulwich Diaspora’. He will be visiting Vancouver, Denver, Dallas, Toronto and New York in May, and plans to travel around Europe later in the summer. If you live in any of these regions and would like to meet Ivor, please contact Miss Katie Cullen in the Alleyn Club & Development Office: alleynclub @ dulwich.org.uk or +44 (0)20 8299 8436.

It is a great honour to be your President this year. It is exactly 50 years since my last year at the College and it is interesting to see both how much has changed and how much is familiar. Our Club has three lasting objectives: • to provide activities for members and to keep them informed of OA matters • to make grants • to help strengthen links between the Club and the College I hope to be able to contribute in each of these areas: improving communication and contact with Old Alleynians everywhere; ensuring that the sporting and social clubs and societies are robust and receive appropriate support; and to continue to lead OAs in working with the College to assist in its evolution and development. When Alleynians leave the College they do not all live in southeast London! The ‘Dulwich Diaspora’ sees OAs in many corners of the world and I hope to visit many of the established groups in the UK and elsewhere during the coming year. I am preparing my schedule of events, so if you are away from SE21 and have a small group of Alleynians who already meet, or if you would like to arrange a small event for OAs locally in the UK, Europe or further afield, then do let the Alleyn Club & Development Office know. They will assist you; and I, as your President, will make every effort to join you!

Alleyn Club News

From the Secretary’s Desk ..........................................................................................................

Sitting, with pencil poised, wondering how to start this review of the Alleyn Club year, lines from Cole Porter’s 1948 musical Kiss Me, Kate flashed through my mind:

Another op’nin’, another show In Philly, Boston or Baltimo’, A chance for stage folks to say hello, Another op’nin’, of another show. So, with sincere apologies to you, Mr Porter: Another op’nin’, the AC show

In Cooden, Sherborne and Toronto, A chance for ‘A-team’ to say hello, Another op’nin’ of the AC show. Just as a new musical will start touring in the provinces before reaching the West End or Broadway, so the Alleyn Club roadshow involving the Master and the President has its fixed points around the UK and overseas before reaching its climax at the Annual Dinner in late October or early November. Incidentally, as the President reminded the committee recently, the Club’s rules state that the only event the committee is required to organise is an Annual Dinner. For all that there are fixed points (including, of course, Founder’s Day and the College Remembrance Ceremony, both occasions when the President lays a wreath at the College War Memorial), no two Alleyn Club years are ever exactly the same. Indeed, it is hoped that Alleyn Club years will become ever more varied as committee plans to engage, Heineken-like, with as many parts of the membership as possible gradually come to fruition. Returning to 2014, it gives me great pleasure to place on record the sincere thanks of Alleyn Club members to those of you who have organised the local and overseas events. These events do not just happen: their success depends on the enthusiasm and meticulous organisational skills of the organisers, together with the splendid backroom support given them by the members of the Alleyn Club & Development Office team, in particular the Development Manager, Guy Lawrenson, and the Alumni Events Officer, Katie Cullen, whose unfailing cheerfulness, courtesy and efficiency make it a pleasure to work with them. As a means of strengthening and sustaining links between the Alleyn Club and the College, the presence at these events of the Master, or one of his deputies, and the President of the Club speaks eloquently. In this latter respect, the Club was especially well served by its President for 2013-14, Dr Colin Niven, who embarked on his round of visits to events large and small, at home and abroad, knowing full well that he was likely to have to undergo major surgery as soon as his presidential year came to an end. It was, therefore,

with great gratitude, warmth and affection that Colin was greeted at the Club committee meeting in January this year, just two months after undergoing successful by-pass surgery. It also gives me pleasure to record that the work begun three years ago by Dr Bruce Smith to bring greater effectiveness to the committee’s deliberations has recently been given added impetus: during autumn 2014 a sub-committee met on three occasions to examine and report to the full committee with recommendations, including timescale, on: 2. Relations between the Club, the College and franchised Dulwich Colleges overseas and sporting clubs using the Old Alleynian or Alleyn Club name (whether closed or open) Details of recommendations made by the sub- committee and actions taken are likely to be made known later in the year. It was, however, abundantly clear from the initial debate on the sub-committee’s recommendations that the full committee wished to make the Alleyn Club relevant to the broadest spectrum of members possible. A section concerning The Life Cycle of an Alleynian, for example, addressed the need for the Club to establish and maintain effective links with OAs as they move from school to university and on to building a career and, most probably, taking on family commitments. Another, dealing with Communications, highlighted the importance of embracing modern means of communication including social media, and further developing the emerging role of OA professional networking groups. Watch this space! 1. Purpose, aims, membership and objectives of the Club

Alleyn Club News

Looking back over 2014, some of the highlights for me included: • The inaugural networking meeting on Thursday 15 May of OAs in the Arts and Media held, courtesy of Mike Kennard (61-68), at the Concert Artistes, Association in Covent Garden, which was much enlivened by the contribution of the guest speaker, Sir Peter Bazalgette (62-71), Chair of Arts Council England • The successful move of lunch back to the Christison Hall on Founder’s Day which allowed the College caterers to lay on a superb buffet lunch • The 36th OA Reunion on Saturday 20 September when Terry Walsh’s span of 60 years at Dulwich was celebrated by the unveiling of a bust of him which is now on permanent display in the Lower Hall • The Annual Dinner when, for the third year running, the Great Hall was well-nigh packed to capacity thanks to the sterling work of James Thornton and his team of table champions who managed not only to fill the tables but to reduce the average age of attendees yet again An event I much regret not having been able to attend last year was the Annual Dinner of the OA Boat Club. Of all the fixed points in the Old Alleynian/Alleyn Club year, this relative newcomer (OABC celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2015) ticks all the boxes for the future health of OA clubs and societies, including the Alleyn Club itself: its membership is young and active, it retains close links with the College and makes old-stagers from the Alleyn Club like me feel completely at home in their company. Long may it continue thus! In four years the College will celebrate its 400th anniversary; in eight years the Alleyn Club will reach its 150th anniversary. With these important milestones in prospect and as preparations are being made for them, I believe it will be important for the Alleyn Club to be in younger hands than mine – I shall be 75 just after Easter. Therefore, I have indicated to the committee that I intend to stand down as Club Secretary at the end of the year. As a result the committee will seek to appoint an OA to succeed me in time for him to work alongside me during the autumn before taking over on 1 January 2016. A job description and details of how to apply can be found on page 7. It has been a great privilege to have been able to serve the Alleyn Club over the past 14 years and to have had the pleasure of meeting so many fellow OAs of all ages at events large and small in venues as familiar as the OAFC pavilion, as ancient as an Oxbridge college, as friendly as a country hotel or as rarefied as Christies’

boardroom in New York with Picassos worth millions of dollars hanging on the walls. Regardless of the event or venue, I have always known in advance that I could rely on being welcomed warmly and that the same, genuine warmth of welcome would be afforded my wife, Eileen, whenever she has been able to accompany me. Thank you, all, very much.

37th OA Reunion Saturday 3 October

For a variety of reasons, the Reunion will have a different format this year. Those who follow international rugby will know that the 2015 World Cup is being hosted by this country during the autumn. What many may not know is that the College’s fine new 1st XV pitch will be used as a training venue for international sides from abroad. As a result, the College 1st XV will be playing at home on just four occasions during the Michaelmas Term including Saturday 3 October when they will be pitted against Brighton College. The undoubted success of last year’s Reunion, when a number of ladies were invited to join OAs to mark the 60th anniversary of Terry Walsh’s arrival at Dulwich in September 1954, has led to the decision by the College to open this year’s event to OAs and their partners. However, because the official calendar of events for the Michaelmas Term will be particularly full, it has been decided to hold the Reunion immediately following an earlier function to which recent benefactors are to be invited. A modest charge of £10 per head will be made towards the costs of College hospitality for the afternoon. In order to support those involved in organising an expanding range of Alleyn Club activities we are working with the College to change the way in which we gather and share OA contact details. This is with the aim of making it easier for individual OAs and the sports clubs to make contact with the rest of the OA community, while providing peace of mind for those who wish their contact details to remain private to the College and Club. With this in mind, please take the time to complete the update form that accompanies the Yearbook . OA Database and Data Protection

Secretary of the Alleyn Club ..........................................................................................................

The Secretary of the Alleyn Club, Chris Field (51-59), has announced his intention to retire on 31 December 2015. The Club Committee invites applications from any Old Alleynian interested in succeeding him. The Secretary is the sole paid executive officer of the Club, responsible for its operation and smooth running. He is greatly assisted by the staff in the Alleyn Club & Development Office at the College, where he has a desk with full computer access. Familiarity with electronic communication systems is essential and the ability to work from home, as and when required, would be an advantage. The Secretary receives an annual honorarium and is reimbursed for out-of- pocket expenses.

A full job description and application form can be found on the College website at www.dulwich.org.uk/alleynclubsecretary. Applications Applicants should complete the application form, giving the names of two referees, and send it to alleynclub @ dulwich.org.uk no later than Friday 29 May 2015 . It is hoped that an appointment will be made before Founder’s Day (Saturday 27 June) and that the successful candidate will be available to work alongside the Secretary during the Michaelmas Term in preparation for the AGM and Annual Dinner on Friday 30 October and the College Remembrance Ceremony and Past Presidents’ Lunch on Wednesday 11 November.

meeting, was proposed by T J Birse, seconded by R H Boultbee and carried unanimously. The Minutes were duly signed as a correct record. 2. The Accounts for 2013 were issued to all present. The Hon Treasurer drew attention to two items of expenditure (i) on the summary income and expenditure account, Support for the Development Office at £12,500 represented a full-year contribution towards the post of Alumni Relations Officer, the corresponding figure for 2012 having been £7,308 which represented seven months of support; (ii) on the balance sheet, the sum of £40,000 represented a donation from the capital account to the College for the Laboratory (new Science Block) Appeal which had attracted matched funding from an anonymous donor. Turning to the schedule of investments, he highlighted the most satisfactory year-end valuation of £1,013,787, that a very pleasing annual rate of return of 4.9% gross (4.4% net) had been achieved, and that the trustees had been well advised to divest the Club of its sizeable holding in Tesco early in the new year. J R Walters asked the Treasurer whether he was concerned that, by investing in relatively high- yielding stocks, the Club’s investments were open to high risk. Replying on the behalf of his fellow Trustees, P G R Lyon said that the Club had invested

News from the Archive

War. The College owns three of these seven medals, all three awarded in the First World War. Over the last year these medals have been the focus of attention on various occasions. In April 2014 three members of the Lafone family visited the College. Terry Walsh (Senior Fellow; Past President) and Calista Lucy (Keeper of the Archive) showed them Alexander Lafone’s (1881-89) VC medal and the War Memorial. They also toured the Old Library, which commemorates Old Alleynians who fell in the Boer War, including Capt W B Lafone (1869-75), a cousin who served in the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 6 January 1900 at Ladysmith. On Tuesday 20 May 2014 Sergeant Johnson Gideon Beharry VC gave an inspirational talk in the Great Hall to members of the CCF. Before the talk Sgt Beharry visited the Archive to view the three Victoria Crosses owned by the College and shared that he had only held his own VC on two occasions. He was particularly interested in the stories on Cecil Sewell (1907-10) and Pip Gardner (28-32) as their stories most closely match his own. On Armistice Day all three Victoria Crosses were on view in the Lower Hall and Lt Gen Sir Peter Duffell KCB CBE MC (49-56) agreed to record a ‘podcast’ about them. The College is recording various people talking about objects and events which are important in its history. This is part of the build up to the celebration of the 400th anniversary in 2019. In December Andrew Gray, a great-great-nephew of Lt Richard Jones (1909-14) contacted the College to ask if he could lay a wreath on our War Memorial on behalf of his family. The College rose to the occasion at very short notice. The CCF turned out and provided a guard of honour. Robin Smith (Head of Brass) organised some trumpeters to play the Last Post and Ivor Warburton (57-65), President of the Alleyn Club and Terry Walsh attended. Afterwards Mr Gray viewed Lt Jones’s VC.

The Archive continues to flourish and is used as a resource not only by the public but within the College as appropriate in the curriculum. During Lent Term 2015 the exhibition in the Wodehouse Library is showcasing the Year 9 History project. This programme has been running since 2009 and is a very successful collaboration between the History department and the Library and Archive. Each boy studies an Old Alleynian who fought and died in the First World War. It introduces the pupils to basic skills of research including using different sources, reading original documents – often hand written – and cross-checking information for accuracy. The project has revealed some mistakes on the War Memorial that have now been corrected. The Summer Term exhibition will be on magazines, other than The Alleynian, produced at the College. If you were involved with any of these – Groll, Troll, The Orchardian, Black and Blue, Illuminati, The Locusts, Muse, PER, Semantron , etc then please contact the Archive via archive @ dulwich.org.uk. The exhibition will be open throughout the Summer Term, including Founder’s Day (Saturday 27 June). The exhibition in Michaelmas Term 2015 will take a look at Modern Foreign Languages at Dulwich College: the teachers, the methods and where the learning of languages has taken Old Alleynians in later life, including Bletchley Park in the Second World War and the diplomatic service. We would like to hear from you if you have benefited from learning languages at the College. The exhibition will be open throughout Michaelmas Term, to coincide with the OA Reunion on Saturday 3 October and the European Day of Languages on 26 September 2015. Dulwich College and the Victoria Cross Seven Old Alleynians have been awarded the highest medal for gallantry, the Victoria Cross: five during the First World War and two in the Second World

firm King & Wood Mallesons. William will take up his three year post as EMEA Managing Partner on 1 May 2015. With more than 3,000 lawyers, KWMSJB is one of the world’s largest law firms. Oliver Brettle (78-87), Partner at international law firm White & Case LLP, hosted a gathering of the OAs in the Law professional interest group at his firm’s offices in April 2014. Peter Susman QC (53-61) was guest speaker and a copy of the guest list can be found on page 45. Stephen Browett (69-77), Co-chairman of Crystal Palace Football Club and Chairman of Farr Vintners, hosted eight OAs at Selhurst Park on Saturday 13 December 2014 for pre-match drinks. The Classical Fourth Form of 1939: 75 Years of Friendship

In September 1939, a few days after the outbreak of WW2, 22 small boys gathered together in Tonbridge, to which the College had been evacuated, to form the Classical Fourth Form of the new school year. On Founder’s Day in 2014 six of those small boys, now nearing their 90th birthdays, met at the College for their Conventus Annualis Septuagesimus Quintus to mark the 75th anniversary of their initial meeting. The 22 boys, aged 13 and 14, were faced with the stresses and uncertainties of evacuation, commencing life in the Senior School and, above all, meeting the unknowns of living away from the familiar surroundings of home and family life. Sharing buildings and facilities with Tonbridge School meant a reversal of the usual school day, with prep being done, football played and other extra-curricular activities indulged in during the mornings, while classes were held in the afternoons and evenings. It was all rather strange at first, as was the experience of being billeted in houses around the town, but those 22 small boys rose to the challenges and took it all in their stride. The evacuation lasted for only one term and by the start of Spring Term in 1940 the form was back in Dulwich. The return meant the disappearance of some faces and the arrival of others so that in all 32 boys passed through the form during the school year. The way of life was, however, very different from that of the pre-war years. There were the air raids which involved sleep deprived nights, disrupted journeys to and from school often over roads covered with broken glass and other debris, sheltering in the basements of the North and South blocks during daylight air raids, weeding the football pitches for shrapnel before a game could start, fire watching and many other war time activities. It was an exciting if dangerous period but the changed way of life soon came to be looked on as normal. Among the plaudits Raza received, The Times praised him for creating a ‘thrillingly unknowable character’. After first making contact through the Alleyn Club, artists Ben James (90-97) and Sebastian Kite (97-04) collaborated on a large scale installation for Bell’s Whisky to celebrate the brand’s ongoing partnership with charity, Help for Heroes. The pair created a multi- sensory environment that aimed to communicate the powerful stories of wounded servicemen and women and honour their bravery. Ben and Sebastian used 600 backlit bottles mounted in a steel frame to form a circular structure conveying the unity and solidarity of members of the armed forces, and the unfailing support of their families and loved ones. Details of Ben and Sebastian’s work can be found at www.jotta.com and www.kiteandlaslett.com respectively. Conductor Graeme Jenkins (68-77), who works with the Welsh National Opera, spent September 2014 conducting Puccini’s La fanciulla del West and Wagner’s Der fliegender Hollander at the Vienna State Opera. Ronald Jones (45-55) and his wife, Helena, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on 31 December 2013. Ronald met and married Helena while working in Poland between 1962 and 1965. Chris Jordan (06-07) continued to feature prominently in the England cricket team in 2014, playing in the ICC World Twenty20 and the one-day international and Test matches against Sri Lanka and India. Chris is now well-established within the ODI and Test teams and played for England at the recent World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

As the years passed by members of the form made their mark in the school – two became School Captain and others prefects, several played for the 1st XV or the 1st XI and around a dozen went onto Oxbridge (with about half that number winning scholarships or exhibitions). Others played prominent roles in the various minor sports and in the Junior Training Corps, the Air Training Corps and the Sea Cadet Corps (the forerunners of the Combined Cadet Force) and the Scouts. When the time came to leave many of the form went straight into one or other of the armed forces, with one becoming a Bevin Boy and experiencing the life of a coal miner, before completing their education, while others went straight to university or other further education establishments. Many and varied were the careers they followed – medicine, the clergy, banking, teaching, surveying, insurance, the civil service, engineering, retail and others. In 1989 one member of the form organised a 50 years on reunion at the College on Founder’s Day which was attended by 16 members of the form together with wives and two masters who had taught the form in the 1940s. The idea caught on and further reunions took place to mark the 55th and 60th anniversaries while today the form meets each year, still at the College on Founder’s Day. The whole form survived the war but the passing years have taken their toll and 15 out of the 32 are no longer with us. However, six stalwarts – Derek Akers (37-44; Staff 52-69), Peter Edgley (38-45), Alan Gregory (37-44), Peter Hart (39-42), Dr Charles Mansfield (37-44) and Rupert Sutton (38-42) – attended the reunion in 2014 and a further eight – Cyril Bristow (37-41), Charles Clapham, Reverend Michael Griffith (37-42), Dr Dick Pledger (37-42), Donald Simpson (40-43), Tony Spain (40-44), Reverend Lyndon van der Pump (40-42) and Dr John Watson (38-42) – sent their apologies for being unable to get to Dulwich on the day. The friendships formed in 1939 have endured and owe much to the Dulwich ethos absorbed by those small boys in the 1940s. The appetite for the form’s annual reunion remains and those who attended in 2014 are determined to continue to meet on Founder’s Day each year – and long may they do so.
