Where is the Industry Headed?
E very now and then an article I come across seems worthy of sharing with my kindred spirits—you NSRA members. The article origi- nated from the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), who hosts a wide variety of “behind-the-scenes” support for the entire automotive aftermarket, discussing where the rodding scene began and where the industry we created is headed. From that article, it's hard to believe the 2020s are half over. It's already past mid-decade and we've seen everything from a global pandemic, supply-chain meltdowns and the lagging, but progressing, electrifi- cation of the auto industry. Things have calmed down a bit, but the automotive industry is poised to experience a transformation unlike anything it's encountered in its more than 100-year history. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be handing off the hot-rodding torch to a new generation of fans and producing enough skilled techs to fill the tremendous demand needed by the modern OEM and aftermar- ket industries. Many old-school car enthusiasts have slowly been fading away. Although senior guys are still a key demographic for the hot-rodding industry, anyone that has attended most car shows recently will know what we're talking about. Nevertheless, the aftermarket has weathered many storms in its almost 80-year history and has the resiliency to with- stand this latest round of challenges. We think hot rod businesses will emerge stronger and more diver- sified than ever. Let's briefly look back to see how far we've come since Gl’s coming home from WWII scoured junkyards and army surplus hangars for drop tanks and throw- away parts to cobble together a fast, cheap jalopy. Thousands of kids across the country invented the DIY movement and created the legendary hot-rod cul- ture on the fly. While America's "Arsenal of Democracy" was busy retooling for civilian auto pro- duction after the war, the specialty-equipment indus- try was still just a gleam in Vic Edelbrock's eye. By the end of the '60s, the automotive aftermarket took root and grew at an astonishing rate. Today, estimates are that consumers spend more than $52 billion acces- sorizing and modifying their vehicles and the industry continues to trend upwards. Companies are seeing most of the larger-scale disruptions from COVID beginning to dissipate, however, some [ongoing] sup- ply challenges, inflation, and economic uncertainty continue to be a cause for concern. Even with some question marks dotted across the country, most reces- sion talk has quelled down, and consumers continue to have jobs and spend money.
So, what is hot rodding today? Old Fords, Tri-Five Chevys, pony cars and muscle machines are still in demand, but there is less demarcation now and classics from all ages are revered. Trucks are a hot commodity as they escaped the front-wheel-drive revolution back at the turn of the century. Millions of them were built, and a good chunk of them are still in service. All “Big Three” truck brands can accept a modern V-8 upgrade and that makes them perfect for modification. Other cars like GM G-bodies, and MTV-era Mustangs and Camaros, are finding new legions of fans. Let's not forget modern Detroit offerings with a factory V-8 either. Chargers, 300s, Challengers, Mustangs and LS-/LT-powered Camaro, Corvette, and Cadillacs are still red hot as well, especially since the Camaro and the Mopar triplets have gone to the great boneyard in the sky. Up and comers are domestic mini trucks, 1970s cars, Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars, and a resurgence of old-school hot-rod imports. Although we'll stick with the term hot rodding, it now encapsulates many body styles, eras, and national origins. For much of the aftermarket indus- try, it ultimately doesn't matter what platform is all the rage, as car enthusiasts will still need mainte- nance, collision repair, wheels, floor mats, tint, paint and wraps. After speaking with key builders, manu- facturers, and tastemakers from around the country, trying to put our "finger on the pulse" of today’s hot rod industry, we discovered the sky is the limit with modern builders. Unlike the custom car builders of yesterday, today's shops are essentially the final assembly of top-notch subsystems from the finest manufacturers in the world. We all know the drill. Start with an Art Morrison or Roadster Shop chassis, add Wilwood or Baer Brakes, Vintage Air and Dakota Digital gauges. Add custom wheels and big rubber and then drop in a GM, Ford or Mopar crate engine, in many cases packaged with an onboard ECM and transmission. These days, 750-plus hp is ho-hum and 1,000 hp might be the new stepping- off point. After all that heavy-duty hardware is assembled, the real test of a shop's mettle comes into play. The trend of aggregating together top- notch gear is now the de facto standard, but the real differentiation will come from a shop's design chops, paint and finishing skills.

Field Force for fame or recognition, you are joining for the wrong reason. You need to be ready to work, but also to enjoy your time helping and serv- ing others as they ask for help—or listen to the occa- sional complaint. While every volunteer’s story is dif- ferent, a common theme emerges, giving back. I recently asked four fellow NSRA volunteers what their positions meant to them: Michigan (East) State Representative Heath LaVoy: “I’ve been involved with NSRA since I was a kid and attended car shows with my family and friends over the years. I always admired NSRA Officials and, in fact, Jerry Kennedy saw me grow into street rodding as a kid, and now I feel honored to be a part of this great association! My co-workers welcomed me into my position as an NSRA State Representative and guided me along the way. When someone asks me what I do or what Safety Inspections are all about, they get the same answer: “We are a second set of eyes inspecting your car for safety issues and aren’t here to critique your car or judge it.”
Before the first car rolls through the gate or the first person walks up to registration, NSRA volun- teers have already spent long hours getting things ready for the weekend. The people in registration, those standing at the main gate, staff at the fairgrounds, and other volun- teers help make NSRA events run smoothly. Most par- ticipants see the finished product, a well-organized event filled with thousands of cars, vendors, activi- ties, and fellow enthusiasts. What they don’t see are the volunteers who make it all happen. The truth is simple, NSRA events don’t run themselves. I remember when I started to work on the Arkansas Safety Team, I was getting my car inspect- ed and the State Inspector at the time mentioned they needed some new team members. Next thing I knew, I was the State Inspector and then moved up to South Central Division Safety Chief. I’ve thorough- ly enjoyed the experience and if you are joining the

When the opportunity arose to become the Missouri State Safety Inspector, I thought that would be a good way to help my fellow street rodders and promote safety in Missouri. By pro- moting safety and encouraging participation in NSRA, it elevated my purpose in promoting street rod safety. All of us serving as NSRA Safety Inspectors realize we are a fellowship with a common bond. If you give it a try, you’ll meet and work with lots of great people and gain a sense of satisfaction promoting safety.” National Safety Director Roger Barnhill: “I was asked to step up to assume the role of National Safety Director when the previous Director retired. I did so to support the association in a broader capacity, overseeing and guiding the NSRA Safety Program. I value the opportunity to work alongside our Safety Teams and to support a cause that is both meaningful and important to me. My involve- ment has heightened my awareness of safety chal- lenges across the country that impact our industry. It has also driven me to continuously seek improve- ments that enhance safety within our hobby, while ensuring that critical information is effectively com- municated to our teams. NSRA’s Safety Program rep- resents fellowship, camaraderie and a shared plat-
form to promote and discuss the importance of vehicle safety. Volunteering does not require a sig- nificant time commitment, and it offers valuable opportunities to learn, build relationships, gain hands-on experience with vehicles, and contribute to keeping our hobby safe.” South Central Safety Division Ed Chopin: “In the early ‘70s I had gotten to know the Louisiana State Representative having attended a number of rod runs where I would bump into him. In 1976 he asked me to be his ‘Advisor’ for north Louisiana. I’ve always enjoyed the comradery and fellowship of working with other like-minded folks and since then I’ve become the South Central Division Director and I’m enjoying my time even more, thor- oughly enjoying representing the hobby which has given me so many pleasant memories. I’ve become more outgoing, speaking up more, being more open to ideas and friendlier. Back-to-Back Autocross Spectacles
B oth events featured in this month’s issue, the 43rd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals and one week later the 52nd Street Rod Nationals East, hosted NSRA Autocross action. The first stop on the 2026 NSRA Autocross season was Mid- America, and it did not disappoint, starting with great weather all weekend making it the perfect way to spend time at the track. Fast and loud cars and trucks were the main attraction at the East, but we’re also seeing a definite rise in first-time drivers wanting to challenge those cones. NSRA Autocross 2026 Back-to-Back Autocross Action

A side from the fun and excitement autocross brings to NSRA events, it’s the safety aspects of both the cars and drivers’ responses, along with performance handling that’s attracting more interest from rodding enthusiasts and the aftermar- ket. American Autowire, manufacturer of high-quality vehicle wiring harnesses and accessories, and Bowler Performance Transmissions, manufacturer of high- performance transmissions and driveline compo- nents, were two early sponsors of NSRA Autocross. Gateway Classic Cars, top seller of classic vehicles with 16 locations since 1999, and Sanderson Headers, with over 60 years of experience producing
high-quality exhaust headers and system compo- nents, have joined Simpson Racing Products and RaceQuip, both providing high-quality track safety products. Their donation of loaner helmets meant every person who wanted to try our NSRA Autocross program for the first time could do so safely. Most importantly, thanks to everyone at AutoXperts Promotions who provided the track layout, timing and all the ride-alongs in their very fast fleet of race cars. They helped new and expe- rienced drivers at both the Mid-America and East NSRA Divisional events improve their lap times and provided live lap times throughout the event.

Swap Meet L ast year at the Quad Cities Nationals the Swap Meet area was moved to a new spot that is right off the paved road for easy access and good for loading and unloading. If you’re ready to clean out the garage or shop here’s your big chance to make a little money for your next project. Super Prize Program This year in two days the Quad Cities Nationals will give away $62,000 dollars in Super Prizes. The drawing for the first $2,000 check will be around 10am at Nick’s Rockin’ Road Show trailer for all the participants that pre-registered for the event. The next draw- ing will be at 2pm on both Friday and Saturday for Super Prizes! The last two $2,000 dollar checks will be given away at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday starting at 1pm. To check and see if you have won a Super Prize you will need to check the board on the side of Nick’s trailer where he writes down all the winning num-

bers. These winning entry num- bers that are drawn at each drawing stay on the board until closing time on Saturday to claim the prize. If not claimed, they go back into the barrel and will redraw the Super Prize again. So, you will need to make a trip over to the trailer and check your number a cou- ple times a day! Friday Night River Boat Cruise If you missed the River Boat Cruise at the Quad Cities Nationals the last two years here’s your chance to take advantage of a great meal and some live music! Last year a River Boat Dinner Cruise on the Celebration Belle featured a Prime Rib dinner that a lot of street rodders took advantage of. It left the dock at 6pm for a three-hour cruise up the Mississippi river and this year it will again be offered on Friday night! I first saw Dan Morris’ 1918 Ford Model T roadster at the Street Rod Nationals West in 2025 and I made a beeline straight to it because I wanted to know more about the unique looking OHV conversion engine. While drooling all over the T’s engine and trying to figure out what the Wikipedia article I just googled up was talk- ing about, Dan came up and I was gloriously assaulted with his pas- sion for his roadster. Dan started collecting parts for his T in the ‘70s and had finally gotten it all together. He spent days, weeks, months, and sometimes years figuring out every detail in his tribute to racers of the ‘20s and ‘30s and he enjoyed every second of it. Dan wanted to not only build a tribute of an early race car, he also wanted to be able to drive it and look period perfect. The roadster runs a lot of stock or modified Model T suspension including a fully boxed T frame. The front suspension is a dropped early I-beam from Nostalgia Sid’s, no front brakes means cautious cruising, a reversed eye spring mounted behind the axle, ‘26 Chevy steering, T spin- dles with modified steering arms, and custom wish- bones. The rear suspension is a transverse leaf with custom wishbones holding the Ruckstell two-speed axle with a closed driveline. The engine is a ‘27 T
four-banger with the Rajo head on top, a dual-point ignition, 97s on top of aluminum intakes, and a cus- tom-made header. The 177ci engine is backed up by the stock two-speed that is then backed up with a Volvo electric two-speed overdrive to give Dan enough gears to get up to highway speeds (maybe faster, downhill). The only thing that stands out are the cool custom Wilwood Texas T rear disc brakes and they are semi hidden by the 21-inch T spoke wheels in white and wrapped in bias-ply rubber. Some rods are defined by what the owners added, but like a true early racer things have only AUGUST 2026 31
been removed from Dan’s T. The fenders, running boards, splash aprons, and everything body related that’s not part of the body is gone. The one exception is the laid-back factory windscreen that has also had a few pieces chopped out to further lower the profile. Dan added old T lights converted to 12-volts and ‘39 Ford taillights to make it look legal yet keeping its authentic looks. The black paint came on the car, and Pete Gutierrez did the lettering. The interior features Stewart-Warner gauges, aluminum interior panels by Dan, a Dan-built shifter, and a distressed brown vinyl seat by Joe Daine.
Dan truly loves his little Rajo Racer, and it shows on every detail he spent the time to get perfect. The T really is completely the opposite of a fancy show car, but every angle is finished. Like hot rods of the past, the only super rare/expensive/fancy part on the T is the engine, but it’s finished like its got a $100,000 chassis. It’s the kind of passion that shines through just looking at the T and if you ever meet Dan, you will see that the passion is real, and he still loves his Rajo Racer now that its been done for a few years. A s Springfield, Missouri, hosts many “250 Years of America” and “100 Years of Route 66” celebra- tions throughout 2026, the NSRA fell right in line hosting the 43rd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals. It came alive the morning of Friday, May 22, as the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds opened the gates to rumbling works of passion, love and talent gathered for three days of enthusiastic owners and spectators enjoying 30-year-and-older works of automobile art. Participants registered for the event at the Host Double Tree Hotel with the help of Lynn Adams, Sheri Vaughn, Sandy Kerr, Lollie Krogmeier and Melinda Johnson, along with Host Clubs, the Pharoahs Car Club and Bad Reputation Car Club. Bret Chrismer led interested cruisers through the countryside to check out the area. Just so happens Show Me Rod & Custom and Hot Shoe Hot Rods were along their route, so it turned into two shop tours. The Battlefield Mall was just a short bus ride away for others who dreamed of shopping. “Samson’s Design” was in the limelight as the “Spotlight Builder” for this year’s event along with Affordable Street Rods as “Spotlight Exhibitor.”

Celebrations Were In the Air
NSRA Autocross had participants carving through orange cones and spectators watching as Kevin Webb along with AutoXperts Promotions put on a great event. Coverage is in NSRA Autocross column this issue so be sure to check it out. At the same time Bethany Coppedge, aka Iona Belair, hosted the PinUp Contest crowning ‘Miss Boom’ aka Crystal Eijkelenboom from Tulsa, Oklahoma, as “Miss Mid-America.” Jeff Pitts coordinated the Swap Meet full of rare parts and Linda Schmoranz set up shopping options in Women’s World. Renee Kaulfuss hosted 90 ladies who enjoyed entertainment and visiting at the Ladies Tea sponsored by Sanderson Headers and the Springfield CVB. Jane Linn coordinated a display of quilts with Rhonda Trenary from Arkansas City, Kansas, coming out the winner. Walt Kruger, Kerby Moon, Wally Burchill and Gaylen Rainforth coordinated and set up the Streets of Rods areas. As always at any NSRA event the Safety Inspection Team was on hand and they examined 104 vehicles during the show, passing 83 of them and placing Safety 23 stickers on 67 of those. On Sunday morning “4 Calvary” entertained and thanked the Lord for our blessings and then the awards were announced, ending a beautiful three-day weekend. The 44th Mid-America Street Rod Nationals is scheduled for May 28-30, 2027, for another Memorial Day weekend of “Fun With Cars.”

You could have a lot of fun in Jim Arthur’s “Rep/Safety Pick” winning ’52 Chevrolet Fleetline from Pierce City, MO, that rolls smooth on a Mustang II IFS, motivates with a 350/350 powertrain, coddles Jim with a rolled and pleated interior, and connects to the pavement with 17-inch Americans.
Gary Bess out of Buffalo, MO, had a great time in Springfield and went home with a “Rep/Safety Pick” for his ’32 Ford five-win- dow coupe that rolls on 14/15-inch Americans, uses a buggy-sprung suspen- sion, and has a red leather interior.
Just like the judges for the “Sexy Sixtys” award, we dug on Tim & LeeAnn Williams’ ’65 Chevrolet Carry All from Marion, AR, that glows in a modern Candy Apple Red paint, rolls on 20-inch Firestone rubber, and has a nicely modernized tan leather interior.

Sadie Kelly from Windsor, CO, is cruising in her late father’s ’32 Ford roadster with her brother Brian (in dad’s ’32 Ford coupe) for their annual trip in his honor (18 days street rodding this year). The flat black roadster took home the honors in “Prime- Time Place” sponsored by O’Brien Truckers.
We fell in love with Dennis & Cyndi Quin’s ’53 Chevrolet pickup out of Washington, IL, that won a “Top Truck” award from Billet Specialties with great mods like the raised bed sides, front and rear ground effects, the groovy hood vents, and we love the big US Mags.
Ted Burleson from Alton, IL, built his sweet ’39 Ford Deluxe coupe using a FatMan IFS, a tuned- port Chevy powerplant backed up with a 700R4, kept the body stock except for a Hagan gas door, painted it Volvo Pearl Green, and won a “Rep/Safety Pick.”

Michael & Vickie Robey from Claremore, OK, love cruising their ’48 Ford Woodie. Michael bought it from Oklahoma Salvage in 1966 and it currently runs 40-year-old metallic brown paint, fresh Cleveland 351 power, a Heidt’s Mustang II IFS, a Bronco rear bumper, and 15-inch American Torq-Thrusts.
James & Wanda Hallman cruised up from Benton, AR, in their just-purchased and “Rep/Safety Pick” winning ’67 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe 442 that is super stock, but has had the four-speed replaced by a Tremec 5-speed and the gears changed to 3.08 from 3.73.
The “Thumbs Up” award is for hot rods that normally wouldn’t be honored but are cool in a fun low-buck way. Dennis & Michelle Kelly out of Lee’s Summit, MO, have been having fun in their owner- painted ’34 Ford Tudor for as long as we can remember.

It doesn’t get much better than a Model A roadster on Deuce rails with a Hemi! James Miller from Paola, KS, built his “Old Skool Kool” award-winning ’29 Ford roadster on Deuce rails with a split wishbone front suspension, a .080-over 392 Hemi with a T-5, and a ’37 Ford coupe dash.
Event Director Mike Adams loved Duane & Treasea Ray’s ’85 Chevy C10 out of Dardanelle, AR, that runs Corvette LT1 350 power, US Mags, a relocated gas tank filler, hidden tailgate handle, and a red over black Houndstooth interior for his “Pick.”
It takes a lot to get an F1 to look like Burl Hollingsworth’s “Top Truck” winning ’50 Ford that has a chopped top, suicide doors, sectioned body, narrowed front fenders, PPG Candy Orange over black paint, Ford 351 power, and an Elm Springs, AR, parking place.

Aaron VanZandt out of Muldrow, OK, put his sweet Model A pickup on his “Visit Springfield Pick” winning ’41 Ford COE with a 1985 C-Class Chevy motorhome chassis, a 450-horse small-block Chevy, a custom 20-foot wedge bed with winch, and Prowler Orange Pearl paint.
Richard Lende came down from Oakdale, MN, in his “Rep/Safety Pick” winning ’70 Chevy EL Camino rocking Chevy 396 big-block power, a Tremec TKX 5-speed, Nitto-wrapped Boyd Coddington wheels, and a bright white mono-colored exterior.
National Field Director extraordinaire Charlie Bryson took a shine to Todd Ayers ghost-flamed ’71 Chevy Camaro running built Chevy 350 power, a Corvette T-10 tranny, and Weld wheels for his “Pick.”
