HEAT PUMP GRANTS
WITH INCREASED GOVERNMENT GRANTS OF UP TO €12,500 FOR HEAT PUMPS, SEAI REGISTERED CONTRACTORS CAN HELP HOMEOWNERS ACCESS AVAILABLE SUPPORTS... Helping homeowners switch to heat pumps
“For oil and gas boiler installers, this presents a major opportunity to upskill, diversify services and future- proof their business.”
Demand for heat pumps is growing rapidly across Ireland, driven by rising energy costs, homeowners looking to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, and increased Government grants. Households are now seeking heating solutions that can offer greater energy efficiency, lower running costs and more stable long-term energy bills. With Government heat pump grants now increased to up to €12,500, homeowners are increasingly looking for trusted SEAI- registered contractors who can help them access available grant supports and make the switch to cleaner home heating. More than 100,000 homeowners in Ireland have already made the switch to heat pumps, attracted by improved comfort, lower running costs and the move away from fossil fuels. As demand continues to rise, SEAI- registered contractors are well positioned to benefit from a growing nationwide pipeline of work.
Ireland’s Climate Action Plan includes ambitious targets to upgrade 500,000 homes to a minimum BER of B and install 400,000 heat pumps in existing homes. Residential buildings account for approximately one quarter of Ireland’s energy use, making home energy upgrades a central part of the transition to a cleaner, more energy-efficient future. The market is already responding. Demand for heat pumps in home retrofits increased by 21% between 2024 and 2025, with strong growth expected to continue following significant increases in grant support for homeowners seeking more energy- efficient heating solutions. For oil and gas boiler installers, this presents a major opportunity to upskill, diversify services and future-proof their business. Heat pump installation skills are increasingly in demand across both rural and urban communities, creating opportunities for contractors nationwide.

Inova heat pump from Pipelife
INOVA IS A FULLY- INDOOR R290 HEAT PUMP, COMPLIANT WITH THE LATEST REGULATIONS AND
DEVELOPED TO PIPELIFE’S OWN
SPECIFICATION WITH THE IRISH APARTMENT MARKET IN MIND…
For anyone installing heating in apartments, next year brings a real change to plan around. Under the EU F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, no new heat pump unit of 12kW or under can be placed on the market after December 31, 2026 if it uses R32. In practice, that rules R32 out of most residential installations from 2027 onwards. The prevalent replacement is R290. It is a high-performance refrigerant with high efficiencies, but it brings its own constraints. R290 heat pumps have traditionally been placed outdoors, often on balconies. For safety reasons, that is not an option in most apartment settings. So, installers have been left with a gap - the refrigerant the regulations point towards, and nowhere obvious to put the unit. This is the gap Pipelife set out to close with the Inova Indoor Heat Pump. Inova is a fully-indoor R290 heat pump, developed to Pipelife’s own specification with the Irish apartment market in mind. The whole unit sits inside the apartment. There is nothing on the balcony and nothing on an external wall. The in-built safety features are designed around indoor installation from the start, rather than adapted for it. The unit fits within an 800mm by 800mm footprint and can be positioned up to 10m from an external wall, connected by 150mm or 220mm by 90mm ducting, with no reduction in performance. That 10m figure matters more than it

independently of it - one unit per apartment, decentralised, doing its own job. On compliance, Inova is fully EcoDesign tested, to EN14825 and EN16147. It will support Part L compliance without a PV requirement in most Irish apartments. Whole-building performance still depends on the individual dwelling, so the usual scheme-level checks apply but, for most apartments, the unit is designed to carry the renewable contribution on its own. For installers, the practical picture is straightforward. Commissioning is as simple as any monobloc heat pump. And because there is no outdoor unit, Inova suits off-site fabrication well, particularly 3D volumetric MMC. The unit can be installed up to second fix in a factory setting, shipped to site without the complication of an external unit and, once water and power are connected, it is ready to be commissioned. Eoghan Considine, Renewables Specification Manager at Pipelife Ireland, says, “We developed Inova in response to what Irish apartment schemes need - simple, compact, reliable heat pumps, with no outdoor units. Pipelife has extensive market experience in heating system design and
first looks. It gives the apartment designer real freedom on where the unit goes, rather than tying the layout to the position of an outside wall. Inova has a capacity of 3.2kW and can deliver water temperatures up to 75°C, covering both space heating and domestic hot water. The 3.2kW figure was specified to suit the heating and hot water needs of most new-build Irish apartments. Heat losses vary from building to building and apartment to apartment, depending on structure, insulation and air tightness, so sizing always comes back to the individual scheme, but the unit has been designed to satisfy the heating requirements of the majority of Irish apartments. There is also a ventilation advantage worth pointing out. Some alternative systems, such as exhaust air heat pumps, can lead to over ventilation and the over consumption of energy that comes with it if outdoor and indoor air are not mixed correctly. Inova uses only outdoor air, which removes that risk. It also means the unit does not need to be integrated with the ventilation system to work efficiently. The installer keeps flexibility on the ventilation specified, whether MEV or MVHR, and the heat pump runs
“In-built safety features are designed around indoor installation from the start, rather than adapted for it.” from that we could see where the issues existed and opportunity lay to bring a new type of heat pump to the Irish apartment market. That meant focusing on simplicity; a compact unit that utilises the latest F-Gas technology, is easy to install and has been designed with the specific constraints of apartment design in mind.” Inova is a new product from Pipelife Ireland, the latest from a company that has been part of the Irish building services sector for decades. For installers working on apartment schemes, it is worth knowing about now, ahead of the F-Gas changes that take effect from 2027.

REBRANDING TO ALIGN WITH ELECTRIFICATION OF THE IRISH HEATING LANDSCAPE, C&F QUADRANT LTD HAS ALSO EMBARKED ON A REVAMP OF ITS DUBLIN AND BELFAST BRANCHES, SAYS MD EMMET DUFFY… C&F Quadrant invests in the future
What inspired C&F Quadrant Ltd’s rebrand? Our current logo and brand image date back to 1992 when C&F Ltd and Quadrant Engineers merged. Those were different times when it came to heating standards, product offering and a dominant fossil fuel-based landscape. The last number of years have seen the environment come to the forefront of our lives, firstly with more efficient products coming to the market and now electrification driving product development, eg heat pumps for both domestic and commercial applications. Our brand owners are moving with these times with new products, and it was important for us to not only be representing these products but for our image to begin to represent this
change and our new collective purpose. Adopting a green-themed, more modern influence and image is essential as we deliver such solutions to the Irish heating landscape. Tell us about the new trade counter, showrooms & training centre We are in our current location at Cherry Orchard Industrial Estate for 25 years now and are fortunate with the size of space we have available for warehousing, office space and trade counter/ showrooms. Our showrooms have taken many forms over that time, but again product changes and industry direction had to be taken into account going forward. Training has always been to the forefront of our offering and, in association with
our partners the Vaillant Group, we have redesigned our training space for boilers and renewables from both the Glowworm and Vaillant brands. We are also fortunate to have the services of the Vaillant Group and their staff to deliver first-class training sessions on site here in a location that is very convenient for access. Our training centre now also has a dedicated area for our commercial heating offering. With industry-leading brands in commercial boilers, heat pumps, burners, calorifiers, pumps, gas detection and safety systems, we are now delighted to be able to offer training and CPDs at our own premises. The company’s business embraces not just heating but also white goods, where we represent many white goods brands

We have incorporated this into our showroom redesign and now have an exclusive white goods area that best represents the product offering from our partners. This area is open to our customer network for training and retail support. We have a very busy trade counter in Dublin with a loyal and growing customer base, but we did have restrictions in terms of movement both front and behind the counter. Our new counter area is now doubled with ample room for our customers to enjoy, and scope for product promotions and breakfast mornings which we plan to develop as a regular schedule. Our customer experience is important to us, with trained staff on site from early in the morning right through the day, stock availability and driving product awareness and training for our customers. Our new coffee dock is also on hand, ready to kick-start the day. Our trade counter in Belfast is busier than ever, as we stock and sell spares for the various commercial brands we support. This has also received a new look to
match the overall refurbishment theme of the company and to again enhance the customer experience. Is C&F Quadrant expanding its product & brand portfolio? Our products and brands change every year as we move with industry change and direction. We have seen the influence of electrification drive heating requirements from boilers to heat pumps. We are also seeing consumer change in white goods appliances that we must also take account off. Given our position in these markets, we must stock and plan accordingly as we accommodate the old and the new.

MULTILAYER PIPES
WAVIN PRODUCT MANAGER UK & IRELAND ANDREW COY EXPLAINS THE TRANSITION TO PERT-BASED TIGRIS MULTILAYER PIPES AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR PLUMBING AND HEATING PROFESSIONALS… Future-ready pipework
With full implementation of the revised EU Drinking Water Directive (DWD) due by January 2027, Wavin is helping to prepare installers for stricter hygiene requirements and harmonised drinking water standards across Europe. Wavin Product Manager UK & Ireland Andrew Coy discusses the change across Tigris MP multilayer pipes, within the Tigris K5/M5 press-fit range, and what it means for installers and specifiers. What is changing in the Tigris K5/M5 MP pipe range? Wavin is converting its Tigris multilayer pipes from MP-PEX to MP-PERT. The key change is the inner pipe material, moving from PEX to PERT. The multilayer construction will remain the same: inner layer, adhesive layer, aluminium layer, adhesive layer and outer layer. The aluminium layer remains unchanged, with the same thickness and alloy. This helps retain the pipe’s strength and pressure performance, while the outer layer is being upgraded from PE-HD to PE-RT II. Why is Wavin making the switch? The revised EU DWD introduces additional hygiene requirements for materials that come into contact with water intended for human consumption. Wavin’s proactive move to MP-PERT supports full compliance with these stricter requirements, including limits around chemical migration, while maintaining performance across hot and cold-water applications. The transition supports improved environmental performance, with MP-PERT offering lower lifecycle assessment values than MP-PEX.
“Wavin’s proactive move to MP-PERT supports full compliance with these stricter requirements.”
1 Inliner: PEX to PERT 2 Adhesive layer - no change 3 Aluminum layer - no change 4 Adhesive layer - no change 5 Outer layer: PE-HD to PE-RT II
What are the sustainability benefits? MP-PERT pipes have a lower carbon footprint than MP-PEX pipes, less energy is used and PERT in liner scrap can be recycled. The LCA reduction improvement is up 6% based on A1-A3 ‘cradle-to-gate’ lifecycle assessment according to ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and EN15804. Where are these pipes used? Wavin MP-PERT pipes with a white skin are suitable and certified for drinking water and UFH, while Wavin MP-PERT pipes with a blue skin are only applicable for UFH given their thinner aluminium layer which gives them the flexibility required for this application. What about insulated options? Wavin offers insulated pipe options for thermal efficiency and fire safety requirements. Insulation thicknesses include standard 6mm and fire-rated options in 9mm and 13mm, available in white, blue and red. Potable water installations requirements on fire class depends on the building area with a minimum B-S1,d0 rating required in escape routes and A1/
A2 in technical rooms whereas a class E is sufficient in most other areas. Wavin fire- rated pipes use Climaflex Premium with a B-S1, d0 rating. When will the change happen? Sizes 16mm, 20mm and 25mm are being introduced now, with larger sizes following later this year to ensure installers are prepared. What is the key message for installers? MP-PERT brings future-ready compliance and improved sustainability, while retaining the performance, pressure ratings and application suitability expected from Wavin Tigris multilayer pipes.
Does MP-PERT offer the same performance as MP-PEX?
Yes. MP-PERT pipes are designed for the same application areas as MP-PEX and meet the relevant multilayer pipe standards, including ISO 21003 and ISO 22391. They are suitable for hot and cold-water systems and are designed to withstand temperatures up to 95°C for short-term exposure and pressures up to 10 bar.

With a robust pipeline of medical gas and water hygiene contracts, and a new Sheffield office up and running, specialist plumbing contractor C A Services is preparing to move its headquarters to Ballynahinch. Also providing plumbing, heating and drain services and renewables, the thriving business has outgrown its current base in Lisburn. The company was founded in 2012 by Alan and Claire Poots, with the initials of the husband-and-wife team forming its name. Leaving school in 1990, Alan served his time as a plumbing apprentice and then worked in the merchant trade, before starting the business. Since then, Alan has steadily grown his customer base by consistently providing professional, high-quality work; an ethos still followed today
“You get the enquiry in, respond to any queries and go back with a quotation providing value for money,” says Alan. “Make sure you start when you say you’re going to, keep to the timeframe, do it to a good standard, finish, get your invoice in, get paid and move on to the next job. “It should be what every business does, but it’s often not. You have to do it right without taking shortcuts and I will never say to an engineer, ‘just get that done today’; that’s when problems arise.” While the business continues to provide regular plumbing and heating services for small and blue- chip clients, Alan always knew he wanted to move into specialised work. Kyle, who started out as a plumber and has been with the firm for nearly 10 years, is contract manager for medical gas. “A lot of our success and progression is down to Alan Poots himself,” says Kyle. “He is very driven and proactive and always wanting to go further. C A Services is now recognised as the primary medical gas service provider in Northern Ireland. We have a very good team with combined experience of over 150 years, which gives our clients confidence. Also with the company for 10 years, Jason is contract manager for water hygiene and led the introduction of a very successful secondary disinfection unit for killing legionella throughout the Belfast Trust. C A Services offers risk assessments, as well as live monitoring of water hygiene through its digital platforms, for healthcare trusts and smaller
businesses such as dentists, delivering vital accountability and legal protection around patient safety. Kyle says, “These are our trusts, which we and our children use, and there’s something a bit satisfying in knowing that the delivery of the medical gas and water hygiene is as good as it can be. We believe if the quality is there, everything else follows on behind and we’d rather not take something on if the client is going to be pushing for shortcuts or we feel we can’t deliver it feasibly without a drop off in quality.” While C A Services currently employs four apprentices, Alan fears for the future of the industry with companies facing unsustainable increases in the minimum wage and a lack of government support. However, “We have a big mixture of skillsets and pride ourselves on training,” he says. “If you’re keen to develop, we can offer a career path through NVQ 2 and 3 and specialised training in water hygiene or medical gas. I see the benefits of keeping people interested.”

A PILOT HEAT PUMP SCHEME AT WALLACE HIGH SCHOOL IN CO ANTRIM SHOWCASES SPECIALIST PLUMBING CONTRACTOR C A SERVICES’ GROWING PRESENCE IN THE RENEWABLES SECTOR… Green solutions from C A Services
Specialist plumbing contractor C A Services has established a growing presence in the market for green energy solutions supporting decarbonisation. Delivering solar panel hot water systems, ground- and air-source heat pumps, biomass boilers and under floor heating, the business is an MCS-approved installer and member of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code. C A Services recently completed a transformative pilot scheme for the Education Authority at Wallace High School in Lisburn, retrofitting the school’s existing infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and extend the building’s lifespan. A hybrid heating system was installed, combining traditional gas boilers with air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) to supply
most of the school’s heating needs. Operating at up to 300% efficiency, three units of heat are produced for every unit of electricity consumed. A central buffer tank stores hot water at 75°C, with ASHPs given priority for heating and the existing gas boilers retained for top-up and backup provision. This hybrid model offers both flexibility and resilience, significantly lowering energy consumption and extending the lifespan of the existing gas infrastructure. The hybrid heating system will contribute an additional annual saving of £24,033 and 45.5 tonnes of CO₂ for the school. Combined with the installation of 400 solar panels and a structural thermal system featuring upgraded insulation
and energy-efficient glazing, Wallace High School is forecast to save 147 million kW hours of energy, 28,000 tonnes of CO₂ and £19.7m in cost savings over its 25-year projected lifecycle. Alan Poots, Managing Director, says, “We installed two Hitachi 150kW air-source heat pumps to work in with the gas boilers. The scheme has been running for over a year now and the feedback from the client has been very good.” C A Services is primed to expand its presence in the renewables sector, ahead of the introduction of grants and wider uptake of heat pumps and other green solutions in Northern Ireland. “At the end of the day, the government’s goal is to get rid of all oil and gas boilers and we’ll have no choice moving forward,” says Alan. “Plumbing and

heating have changed vastly, and you have to keep running to stand still. Renewables are going to happen whether you want it or not, and C A Services tries to stay a step ahead.” Aiming to be a leader in renewables, the company is currently installing a lot of solar systems, says Contracts Manager Kyle Sinclair. “With the pilot school scheme in Lisburn, not many other contractors here would have had the ability, resources and knowledge across plumbing, heating, electrical and control systems to take that on,” he says. “You need that range of expertise among the team and, thankfully, that’s something we’re able to deliver.” “Renewables are going to happen whether you want it or not, and C A Services tries to stay a step ahead.”
