This month is particularly important for our airline. On 17th June we celebrate the 91st anniversary of the establishment of Aeroput – Air Serbia’s first predecessor company. The first route, from Belgrade to Zagreb, is today just one of 40 destinations served by our airline. In the tenth decade of our existence, we can also boast of our direct flights to New York. The magazine in front of you should make your flight even more pleasant. In this issue of Elevate you are awaited by information about the music festivals and events to be held during June in Serbia, but also in cities to which Air Serbia flies. Among them are the Belgrade concert of rock band Scorpions on 10th June, the Belgrade Summer Festival, from 22nd June to 15th July, as well as Kragujevac’s three-day Arsenal Fest music festival, scheduled to start on 21st June. These events are an excellent way to warm-up for Novi Sad’s famous EXIT Festival, to be held this year from 12th to 15th July. When it comes to European festivals, thanks to us you can attend Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Italy’s Rock in Roma, the British Summer Time festival in London or Belgium’s Tomorrowland. If you are interested in cinematography, you will particularly enjoy Elevate’s interview with yet another interesting guest of the Serbian capital – American filmmaker Abel Ferrara, who talks about what he likes most in the Belgrade. Another interesting article for art lovers features the National Museum in Belgrade, which is returning to the path of its former glory. Alongside an interview with actress Nataša Ninković, we bring a story that will interest sports fans in which we speak with former basketball player Dino Rađa. The 11 Russian cities hosting the FIFA World Cup are also featured in this issue, along with the beauty of the Tara River Canyon, which is known around the world as one of Europe’s most stunning natural beauties. Cvetanje reke Tise odvija se sredinom juna i traje petnaestak dana. Dešava se uvek u predvečernjim satima. Tada se na površini Tise na delu s glinovitim koritom pojavljuju larve mužjaka, iz kojih se za nekoliko sekundi izlegu insekti. Nešto kasnije se pojavljuju i larve ženki, pa počinje masovni „svadbeni let“. Slavlje traje kratko, kao i život ovih prastarih insekata. Tiski cvet je kao vrsta nastao pre oko 200 miliona godina, a danas je reka Tisa kod Kanjiže jedno od retkih utočišta gde se tiski cvet masovno roji svake godine. The blooming of the River Tisa occurs in mid-June and lasts for around 15 days, always taking place in the evening hours. Then bursting through the surface of the Tisa from its clay bed appear the larvae of males, from which insects emerge after just a couple of seconds. The female larvae appear sometime later, then a mass “wedding flight” begins. The nuptials are as short-lived as these prehistoric insects. The Tisa mayfly emerged as a species around 200 million years ago, while today the River Tisa near the town of Kanjiža is one of the few habitats where masses of Tisa mayflies emerge every year.

UČESTVOVA ETE NA EP ZA ŽENE U SOFIJI OD 4. DO 13. JUNA – Verujem da je medalja sa tog prvenstva nešto što je logično u mom životu jer sam prerano ušla u profesionalni bokserski svet. A to priznanje je preko potrebno i našoj zemlji, jer je u srpskom boksu, muškom i ženskom, bio period vakuuma kad je reč o takmičarima i trenerima. Nadam se da će opet doći vreme kad će Srbija osvajati medalje i biti uspešna u boksu. YOU WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE WOMEN’S EUROPEAN BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SOFIA FROM 4TH TO 13TH JUNE - I believe that a medal from these championships is something that is logical in my life, because I entered the world of professional boxing too early. And that recognition is also real- ly needed for our country, because in Serbian boxing, both men’s and wom- en’s, there has been a period of a vacu- um for both competitors and coaches. I hope for a return to the times when Serbia won medals and achieved suc- cess in boxing.

- I’m the most skilled person at packing. I travel a lot and pack in ten minutes, because I know exactly what I need. I carry two or three changes of cloth- ing, a vanity case for personal hygiene, a laptop and a card with money on it, because I think it’s better to buy things than to carry them with me.

Brisel Atomijum slavi 60. rođendan Poznati briselski spomenik Atomijum ove godine obeležava 60 godina postojanja, pa je tim povodom otvorena izložba Galaksija 58 . Postavku čine dokumenta, fotografije, predmeti i snimci vezani za davnu 1958. godinu, kada je spomenik izgrađen. Strip, koji je jedan od simbola ove zemlje, takođe će biti deo proslave rođendana Atomijuma, koji je inače sagrađen za potrebe Svetske izložbe, baš kao i Ajfelov toranj. Izložba traje do januara naredne godine. Njujork Stiže muzej pice Muzeji hrane u poslednje vreme veoma su popularni u svetu, pa će tako u Bruklinu u oktobru biti otvoren muzej pice. Među eksponatima biće pećina od sira, plaža od pice, a posetioci će kroz razne interaktivne izložbe moći da se podsete i na istoriju nastanka pice. Ipak, kako već sada stvari stoje, deluje kao da će muzej biti više urađen tako da privuče korisnike Instagrama da u njemu uslikaju nekoliko neobičnih selfija.

Brussels Atomium turns 60

Brussels’ famous Atomium landmark celebrates its 60 th birthday this year, and this occasion has been marked by the opening of the exhibition “Galaxy 58”. The exhibited works include documents, photographs, items and photographs linked to the year 1958, when this monument was built. Comic strips, which are among the symbols of this country, will also form part of the birthday celebrations for the Atomium, which was actually constructed for the needs of the World Fair, just like the Eiffel Tower. The exhibition runs until January next year.

Food museums are very popular in the world lately, which is why the temporary Museum of Pizza will open in Brooklyn in October. Among the exhibits will be a cave made of cheese and a pizza beach, while visitors will be able to remind themselves of the history of the emergence of the pizza through various interactive exhibitions. However, as things stand now, it seems that the museum will be designed more to attract Instagram users to cake and shoot some unusual selfies.

Atina Dva koncerta legendarnog Stinga Muzičko-pozorišni festival Athens & Epidaurus najznačajniji je kulturni događaj u Grčkoj i jedan od najstarijih festivala umetnosti u Evropi. Zato svake godine publici i predstavlja najbolje svetske pozorišne, plesne i muzičke umetnike, a ovogodišnju manifestaciju svojim koncertima uveličaće legendarni Sting. Slavni britanski roker nastupiće 22. i 23. juna u akropoljskom pozorištu – Herodotovom odeonu, i biće to sasvim sigurno dve večeri vrhunske muzike za pamćenje. Tivat Jeste li za žućenicu? Žućenica fest je jedinstvena gastro- manifestacija, koja se svake godine održava u Tivtu. Posetioci će ove godine 16. juna moći da degustiraju više od 200 slatkih i slanih jela od žućenice, autohtone primorske divlje jestive trave. Inače, novina ove sezone u turističkoj ponudi Tivta je svakako prvi međunarodni letnji karneval, koji će se održati od 8. do 10. juna. Tivćani će ugostiti više od 300 karnevalista iz regiona i inostranstva, a slogan karnevala je Magija pod maskama .

Athens Two concerts of the legendary Sting The music and theatre festival ‘Athens & Epidaurus’ is the most important cultural event in Greece and one of Europe’s oldest art festivals. That’s why it presents the world’s best theatre, dance and music artists to audiences every year. And this year’s event will be boosted with two concerts by legendary artist Sting. This famous British rocker will perform on 22 nd and 23 rd June under the Acropolis at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, with those two nights certain to be evenings of top music worth remembering. “Žućenica Fest”, the festival of dandelions, is a unique gastronomic event held annually in Tivat. This year, on 16th June, visitors will be able to sample over 200 sweet and savoury dishes made from this indigenous coastal wild edible flower. Otherwise, this season’s main new addition to Tivat’s tourist offer is certainly the first International Summer Carnival, to be held from 8 th to 10 th June. This event will see Tivat host over 300 carnival-goers from the region and overseas, under the carnival slogan “Magic under masks”. VAPIANO – THE MEDITERRANEAN IN BELGRADE VAPIANO is an innovative“fresh casual”concept that presents an excellent balance of fresh cuisine, modern architecture and a great atmosphere. GOSPODAR KANJONA UVCA Kanjon Uvca nalazi se između Sjenice i Nove Varoši, između planina Javor i Zlatar. Poznat je po svojim meandrima, koje je reka usekla u kreč- njačku stenu. LORD OF UVAC CANYON

Uvac Canyon is located between Sjenica and No- va Varoš, between Javor and Zlatar mountains. It is known for the meanders that the river has cut through the limestone rock. Beauty, wildlife, nature, every- thing is there, while also there is the guardian of this region: the majestic griffon vulture, with its imposing dimensions, nests in this very canyon. Until a few de- cades ago, there were just a few of them on the lakes of Uvac. Then, in 1994, an association was established with the aim of preventing this bird’s extinction in Ser- bia. The Uvac Canyon is today home to around three hundred individual birds, representing the largest grif- fon vulture colony in the Balkans and one of the most important in Europe. This photograph, the work of Ljubiša Simović was selected as one of the 100 most beautiful pictures of Serbia as part of the competition of internet platform Slike Srbije. KO KAŽE DA SAM UBIO HARVIJA KAJTELA? WHO SAYS I KILLED HARVEY KEITEL?

mu grada sa terase jednog beograd- skog hotela. – A šta ti misliš? Da li mi se svi- đa ovaj grad? Pa jesi li ti bila sinoć na premijeri mog filma? Mislim da je sve jasno… Gledam ga sa izrazom koji jedi- no jasno govori o tome da nemam pojma šta mi je rekao, što mu otvo- reno i kažem. – OK, vidim da ne znaš kako sto- je stvari. Nema mnogo gradova u ko- jima se organizuju festivali dokumen- tarnih filmova. Ako odeš u neki od tih izvikanih gradova na te slavne festi- vale, znaš ko bude u sali? Žiri! Samo prokleti članovi žirija, nema nigde lju- di da gledaju filmove, ne zanima ih. U Beogradu je moj film gledala puna sa- la, čoveče! Puna! Ovde ljudi vole filmo- ve i dolaze da ih gledaju čak i kad nisu blokbasteri. Šta tu ima da se ne voli? Porasla sam nekoliko centimetara od ponosa što smo tako sjajni likovi, mi u Beogradu, pa nastavljamo priču o tome zbog čega je u Srbiji. Stigao je kao počasni gost i otvorio 11. Beldo- cs, međunarodni festival dokumentar- nog filma, koji je ove godine prikazao 98 novih ostvarenja. Između ostalih i Ferarin Trg Vitorio (Piazza Vittorio). Protiv brutalnosti urbanog života, laž- nog morala, kvaziumetnosti, protiv ra- ta, liberalnog kapitalizma, protiv svega se toga Ferara borio svojim filmovima, pa ne čudi da se ponovo bavi aktuel- nom društvenom temom. Ljudima sa margine, migrantima sa kojima živi na najvećem rimskom trgu Vitorio… – Živim sa njima, naši životi su po- vezani i isprepletani. Možeš da pričaš o svetu i velikim temama, ali svako živi u svom komšiluku. Većina život provede nedaleko od kuće, ako ima sreće da živi u kući, a ako nema, on- da živi u parku kao junaci iz filma. Za- to je važno da ih upoznamo i razume- mo odakle dolaze. Ferara već dve decenije cirkuli- še po svetu, između Evrope i Ameri- ke, da bi se ipak skrasio u Italiji, u Ri- mu, gde mu je prvi komšija glumac Vilem Defo, jedan od najboljih prija- telja, najvernijih saradnika i kum nje- gove ćerkice. Zajedno su stigli, osno- vali porodice, žive u Rimu kod Trga Vitorio, pa u filmu vidimo i Defoa ka- ko kupuje u nekoj piljarnici. Ferara do- nosi priče tog sveta u malom, migra- nata, narkomana, majki sa decom na igralištu, Italijanki koje kunu pridoš- lice. Ipak, to čini sa određenom emo- tivnom distancom. – Kad pijanac sedi na prozoru, de-

Nije bio naročito ljubazan ni nasme- jan, niti me je očinski sažaljivo gledao kao što se gledaju blesavi fanovi. Ro- đeni Njujorčanin, odrastao u Bronksu, još gaji deo imidža iz vremena Zlog poručnika ili Kralja Njujorka . Nervo- zan je, sve mu prilično ide na živce, mnogo psuje i još je ljut na sistem, na Ameriku, na Trampa, na svet... Nešto drugo bilo bi glupo oče- kivati, a bilo bi i razočaravajuće. A bel Ferrara didn’t make any effort to ease my job. I arrived for the in- terview nervous, like when you arrive in the company of a man whose films you grew up with, whose films horrifiedyouandopenedyoureyes.Hewasn’t particularly polite or even smiling, nor did he eye me pityingly in the way one looks at silly fans. This native New Yorker who was raised in the Bronx still nurtures part of the image from the time of the films Bad Lieutenant or King of New York. He’s irritable, with pretty much everything getting on his nerves; he swears a lot still angry at the system, at Amer- ica, at Trump, at the world... It would be stupid to expect anything else, and also disappointing. It was a great pleasure for me to see how Ferrara, despite being almost 70 years old, still nurtures the same fire that once led to one of our critics dubbinghim“apyromaniacoftheNewYork Fire Department”. - Have you managed to tour Belgrade, to meet the people; what are your impres- sions? I ask him as we both observe the pan- orama of the city from the terrace of one Bel- grade hotel. - What do you think? Do I like this city? Well, were you at the premiere of my movie last night? I think everything’s clear... I look at him with an expression that could only state clearly that I have no idea what he just said to me, which I explain openly. - Okay, I see that you don’t know how things stand. There aren’t many cities where documentary film festivals are organised. If you go to one of those exalted cities to at- tend those famous festivals, do you know who’s in the auditorium? The jury! Only the members of the damned jury; there are no people to watch the films, as they’re not in- terested. My film was watched in Belgrade by a full hall, man! Full! People love films here and come to watch them even when they’re not blockbusters. What is there not to love about this city? I grew a few centimetres taller from the pride of us being such great folk in Bel- grade, after which we continue talking about

To je sad moja kuća, tu su dve strane trga, parka, dve strane sveta, dve strane svega… Stalo mi je, ali pomažem onako kako umem, radeći svoj posao. Filmovi, umetnič- ka dela, pesme, knjige, sve to može da okrene svet naopačke i promeni na- še živote. Radim ovo zato što je meni važno i ostaje mi da se nadam da će imati nekog uticaja. Čoveku koji je snimio film Kralj Njujorka, koji je odrastao i nastao u tom gradu, Njujork ne nedostaje. O njemu govori bez trunke nostalgije ili se bar tako predstavlja. Kaže da taj grad više nije njegov, da ga ne prepo- znaje i ne poznaje. – Nemam ja ništa više s Njujorkom, to je igralište za milijardere, a ne zna normalne ljude i zato me ne interesu- je. Pominješ Bronks, a to je druga pla- neta. Taj moj Njujork, čoveče, pa mi ni- smo znali da postoji Menhetn. Tamo negde je bio, kod Empajera. Iz Brukli- na smo u njega buljili preko reke, sa- mo jednu stanicu metroa i cele svetlo- sne godine udaljeni. Sad taj Menhetn može da se ogradi zidom, jer tamo nije moguće živeti u minijaturnim stano- vima od 10.000 dolara mesečno. Vi- dim, sviđa ti se Njujork, imaš li ti pa- ra da tamo živiš? Nemam ja ni blizu toliko para, ali

nećeš ti meni, Ferara, uništiti snove o Njujorku, mislim se ja. Podsećam ga da je i taj njegov Njujork bio jeziv, surov, brutalan, da je ulice u svojim filmovima bojio u crveno od silne prolivene kr- vi. Podsećam ga na taj Njujork iz Zlog poručnika (Bad lieutenant ) i na mah- nitog Kajtela, a Ferara mi se smeje… – Šta je vama u Srbiji sa tim fil- mom? Svi ste ovde fanovi zlog poruč- nika! Ali da se vratimo na priču. Tako je, ja se obračunavam sa brutalnošću urbanog života, moji junaci jesu soci- opate, ali oni pokušavaju da se isku- pe. Poručniku se, obeznanjenom od droge, priviđa Isus i on iskreno traži oproštaj i kaje se. Harvi je to tako sjaj- no i uverljivo odigrao. Ali nije jedna halucinacija dovoljna da se promeni život. Da li on može da dobije šansu da se iskupi? Verovatno ne, film se za- vrši pre toga… – Kako verovatno? Pa ubili ste ga na kraju filma! – A otkud ti znaš da je on mrtav? Pa u Fiftija Senta (50 Cent) ispalili su devet metaka, pa je čovek živ. Možda oprost stigne u Zlom poručniku dru- gi deo. Ne znamo mi da li je Harvi mr- tav, mi samo vidimo da u njega pu- caju i to sve. A svako može da dobije oproštaj, jer je suština života u sami- losti. Pokušajte da razumete ljude i da saosećate, tu počinje sva duhovnost ovog sveta, odatle dolaze i Isus, i Bu- da, i Muhamed, i svi ostali. Nađi na-

In op- position to the brutality of urban life, false morality, quasi-art; opposed to war and lib- eral capitalism, opposed to everything that Ferrara fought in his films, it is no wonder that he has re-engaged in a current social is- sue: people from the margins, migrants with whom he lives on Rome’s largest square, Pi- azza Vittorio... - I live with them, our lives are connected and intertwined. You can discuss the world and major topics, but everyone lives in your neighbourhood. They spend most of their lives not far from home, if they’re lucky they live in a house, if not, then they live in the park like the people in this film. That’s why it’s important for us to meet them and un- derstand where they come from. Ferrara has spent two decades travelling theworld,mainlybetweenEuropeandAmeri- ca, only to finally settle in Italy, in Rome, where his next-door neighbour is actor William De- foe, one of his best friends, most trusted as- sociates, and the godfather of his daughter. They arrived together, established their fam-

ilies and today live near Rome’s Piazza Vitto- rio, so we also see Defoe in the film, buying supplies from a greengrocer. Ferrara brings mini stories of that world of migrants, drug addicts, mothers with children on the play- ground, Italian women who curse the new- comers… However, he does so with a cer- tain emotional distance. - When a drunkard sits on the window, yelling all night and scaring my child, I want to strangle him. Do I go around picking peo- ple up and taking them to my bed? No, I don’t do that. That’s now my home, there are two sides to the square, the park, two sides to the world, two sides to everything... I care, but I help in the way I can, by doing my job. Films, artworks, songs, books – they can all turn the world upside down and change our lives. I do this because it’s important to me, and all that remains is for me to hope that it will have some influence. The man who made the film King of New York, who was born and raised in that city, doesn’t miss New York. He speaks about it without an ounce of nostalgia, or at least that’s how he presents himself. He says that this city is no longer his, that he doesn’t rec- ognise it or even know it. - I don’t have anything to do with New

York anymore, it’s a playground for billion- aires, not for normal people, and that’s why it doesn’t interest me. You mention the Bronx, andthat’sanotherplanet.That’smyNewYork, man; we didn’t even know that Manhattan ex- isted. It was there somewhere, near the Em- pire. We stared at it from Brooklyn across the river, just one subway station and an entire light year away. That Manhattan can now be surrounded by a wall, because it isn’t possible to live there in miniature apartments costing $10,000amonth.IseethatyoulikeNewYork, do you have enough money to live there? You’re all fans of bad lieutenant here! But let’s return to the story. You’re right, I address the brutality of urban life, my heroes are sociopaths, but they are trying to redeem themselves. Ka- da je mogao da snima filmove u Holi- vudu, u vreme najveće slave, odlučio je da napusti taj svet, u kojem se, ka- ko kaže, osećao neprijatno. – Imam tu neku autodestruktivnu crtu, i umetnički i fizički. Roditelji su mi bili radnička klasa, porodica mo- je majke bila je nenormalno siromaš- na, bukvalno nisu znali kada će jesti, a sve je to na mene ostavilo trag. Kad sam imao priliku da budem u novcu i slavi, meni se to nekako gadilo i gnu- šao sam se samog sebe znajući da tu ne pripadam. Nešto se u meni budilo i bunilo, pa sam otišao iz Holivuda, po- stao alkoholičar, navučen na droge… Iz tog se pakla izvukao uz pomoć prijatelja i porodice. Dugo je već tre- zan i svestan, srećno oženjen mnogo mlađom lepoticom iz Moldavije, sa kojom ima ćerkicu od tri godine. Po- nosno mi pokazuje njene slike u tele- fonu. Devojčica lepa kao anđeo, pa ša- ljivo kažem da je srećom povukla na mamu. On se prvi put iskreno smeje i slaže se da je to velika sreća. Holivud prezire, ali se na njega ne ljuti. Kaže da je i sam kao klinac trčao u bioskop da gleda filmove o junacima kao što su Ben Hur ili Spartak. Ne čudi ga što fabrika snova danas uglavnom prodaje superheroje i naučnu fantasti- ku. Pitam ga da li gleda te filmove? – Je l’ imaš utisak da mi je 12 go- dina? A man born and raised in New York, he doesn’t miss that city. sincerely repents and seeks forgiveness. Har- vey played that role so wonderfully and con- vincingly. But one hallucination isn’t enough to change a life. Can he get a chance to re- deem himself? Probably not, the movie ends before that happens... -Whatdoyoumeanprobably?Youkilled him at the end of the film! - And how do you know he’s dead? They shot nine bullets into 50 Cent and the man is still alive. Perhaps forgiveness arrives in Bad Lieutenant Part 2. We don’t know if Harvey is dead – we only see him being shot and that’s all. And everyone can receive forgive- ness, because the essence of life is in com- passion. Trying to understand people and to empathise – that’s the starting point for all the spirituality of this world, from which come Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad and all the rest. Find a way to forgive people, because if you don’t do that you remain stuck in a sto- ry that has no end. And Ferrara brought his own story to an end only to be able to find a new one. When he was in a position to make movies in Hol- lywood, during the time of the greatest suc- cesses, he decided to abandon that world, in which he says he felt uncomfortable. - I have some kind of self-destructive

quality, both artistically and physically. My parents were working class, my mother’s family was abnormally poor – they literally didn’t know when they would eat next, and all this left a mark on me. When I had the op- portunity to have money and be celebrated, that somehow sickened me, and I repulsed myself, knowing that I didn’t belong there. Something in me awakened and rebelled, so I left Hollywood and became an alcohol- ic, addicted to drugs... He emerged from this hell with the help of friends and family. He has long been sober and conscious, and he is now happily married to a much younger woman from Moldovia, with whom he has a three-year-old daugh- ter. He proudly shows me her pictures on his phone. A little girl as beautiful as an angel, I jest that she luckily takes after her mother. He laughs sincerely for the first time, then agrees that she is very fortunate. He despises Hollywood, but isn’t angered by it. He says that he himself rushed to the cin- ema as a kid to watch movies about heroes like Ben-Hur or Spartacus. He isn’t surprised that this factory of dreams is today mainly selling superheroes and science fiction. I ask him if he watches those films. - What am I, 12 years old?
