Dragi gosti,

Dear Guests,

December is all about spending time with our loved ones and, as such, it’s a time of year when we can really appreciate how aviation has changed our lives over the past century – how it has shortened distances and better connected us. This year, Air Serbia celebrated its 90th anniversary as the national airline, continuing a heritage established in 1927. Many things have changed from the twenties, but the core of what we do has remained the same – bringing people together, across Southeast Europe and the world, and doing it in style. At the same time, we have continued to adapt and evolve our business to better meet your needs. This is why, earlier in April, we upgraded our systems to Sabre technology. It means you can check-in for your Air Serbia flight through

the web, use a mobile boarding pass to get through security controls at Nikola Tesla Airport, and select your seat online – plus much more. In 2018 we are going to expand our travel options even further to allow you to personalize your experience with Air Serbia. In fact, we are working on some exciting developments right now that will be introduced next year, but I won’t spoil the surprise.

For now, let’s return to Belgrade. If you’re coming on holiday to our capital, or stopping over, you’re sure to have a fantastic time – just remember to bundle up for the cold. There’s nothing like strolling through the lit-up streets of our capital and popping inside a traditional kafana tavern to warm up with a vruca rakija – our hot brandy. If the weather permits, consider going for a walk along the Danube or the fortress grounds at Kalemegdan. Whatever you decide, you’ll find that our people – much like Air Serbia’s cabin crew – are warm and friendly hosts. This issue of Elevate is packed with ideas of how you can celebrate the end of the year in Serbia and beyond. If you haven’t tried our local cuisine, turn to p. 64 to read about ajvar and sarma, which you’ll find in every home when there’s a celebration. There are also some great classical music concerts being staged in our capital this month – flick to p. 104 to read more. Wherever you’re travelling, I hope you have a pleasant journey with us today and wish you the best for the year ahead.

This annual collection of sculptures made of snow and illuminated ice is the main winter attraction in Harbin in northeast China. It takes nearly two weeks to build this ice city, featuring tall buildings like high-rise residential towers and various giant figures of people, animals and fairy-tale creatures, illuminated with LED bulbs of various colors. Although temperatures here are almost -30 degrees, this doesn’t prevent countless visitors from being awed with wonder by the sculptures. This festival is held in Harbin every year, starting on 5 th January and running for a month.

Olgica Kravljača is a journalist who has been attracted to the power of stories and storytelling since her time studying literature. She has written with particular interest about women through history, about their artistic contributions, and about the testimonies left by the women of today. That’s why her story about Anđelka Radojević for this issue of Elevate was very inspired.

Ana Vodinelić graduated in art history and earned a master’s in journalism. She wrote her first media articles for Blic in 1999. She is fondest of topics and interviews with artists, whose lives and deeds she has presented to the public for years. Violeta Nedeljković is a journalist specialising in health issues, but health is not her only preoccupation. She likes stories with soul, dynamism and those that are slightly mystical, just like the story you will read in this issue of Elevate. It is about an underground city in Mali Zvornik, which was under siege for years by hunters seeking buried treasure...

ALEKSANDRA RADOVIĆ , PEVAČICA I KOMPOZITORKA / SINGER AND COMPOSER UZ DOBRU KNJIGU LEPŠE SE PUTUJE

KOJA MESTA VOLIŠ U BEOGRADU?

WHICH PLACES IN BELGRADE DO YOU LIKE?

TRAVELLING IS NICER

1. I love the parts of the city which are beside the rivers the most, such as the 25 th May Promenade. I like wa-

ter, because a person’s thoughts gain clarity more quickly there for some reason.

WHO IS ALEKSANDRA? It’s always tough to describe yourself, because a person is con- tinuously re-acquainted with themselves while they’re alive and try to change, adjust and correct some things. I am essen- tially an ordinary woman with all the flaws and virtues that every other woman probably has, but I am first and foremost the moth- er of a little girl. I think that’s the most important and most valuable thing about me, and everything else is sec-

2. The plateau at St. Sa- va Temple. I often sit on a bench there during sum- mer and read a book, while my daughter rollerblades or rides her scooter. I like places where I can gather my thoughts, and there I can feel the peace of the temple.

OMILJENO PUTOVANJE? Definitivno Bali pre se- dam-osam godina. Očaralo me je

FAVOURITE JOURNEY? Definitely Bali, seven/eight years ago. I was cap- tivated by everything, the land and the peo- ple and their culture, which completely differs from ours. Singapore also fascinated me, and I think I should make a similar journey there soon, while I still can. Such jour- neys are beautiful, but they are tir- ing and long.

WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS CARRY WITH YOU? Apart from the usual things, on the road I always carry a hairdryer or hair tongs. I never know what kind of hairstylist will await me in the city where I am performing, so I’ve trained myself to create my own hairstyle. In my luggage there’s always room for a good book, which keeps me company while I’m waiting for a flight.

Ljubljana Počinje Animateka

Ljubljana Animateka underway Short animated films from Eastern and Central Europe will comprise the main competition programme at this year’s Animateka, which will take place from 4 th to 10 th December in Ljubljana’s Kinodvor. This will be the 14 th edition of this international festival of animated film, and alongside film screenings, visitors are also awaited by interesting workshops, exhibitions and other accompanying events. Moreover, a special programme will include screenings of the best short animated films for children, making this event a real adventure for the entire family.

The Greek Ministry of Tourism has approved the introduction of a residence tax that will start being applied as of 2018 and should contribute to the country’s economic recovery. The residence tax will be charged for all types of tourist accommodation, per night, per person, while the amount will be determined in accordance with the classification of local tourist organisations. Greek hoteliers attempted to postpone implementation of this law, fearing the new charge will endanger their operations.

Moskva Ledene skulpture u znaku fudbala

Moskow Ice sculptures symbolising football

The traditional New Year’s festival ‘Ice Moscow’ will be held for the third time on Poklonnaya Hill from 29 th December 2017 until 8 th January next year. The slogan of this year’s festival is Football from five continents, with the entire event dedicated to the FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia for the first time in 2018. Accordingly, the 32 countries to participate in the championships will be presented symbolically during the festival in the form of ice sculptures, along with the 11 Russian cities that will host the tournament. Rome Visiting the Pantheon no longer free Rome’s great attraction of the Pantheon will soon no longer be free of charge for visitors, with entrance to this ancient temple set to be subjected to a charge for the first time after 1,900 years. Local authorities calculated that charging for entrance is essential to maintaining this site, which is toured annually by around seven million visitors. The Pantheon, also known as the temple of all gods, is recognisable for its monumental colonnade of pillars that adorn the perimeter of the temple, but also for the opening in the middle of the dome that allows light to enter. New York Tiffany’s for breakfast Breakfast at Tiffany’s has become a reality after famous American jeweller Tiffany & Co. opened its first restaurant, which is located on New York’s Fifth Avenue. The restaurant is called the Blue Box Cafe, signifying the famous little blue boxes in which Tiffany packages its jewellery items. The restaurant’s interior is in recognisable gentle shades of blue, with elements of grey and silver, and luxurious details. This eatery will tailor its offer to the seasons, while initial information suggests that visitors will be able to order coffee and a croissant for a price of $29.

IT’S WINTER,

NOT A LION

Winter is coming and the night is dark and full of terrors, for George R. R. Martin and the characters of his Game of Thrones. For Virgin- ia Woolf melancholy is the sound on a winter’s night, while for William Blake it is a time for en- joyment. The wise Camus noted “in the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer” ... Many great people have considered and writ- ten about winter, but those of us who grew up in Serbia believe our uncle Jovan“Jova”Jovanović, aka Zmaj, the most. And he told us nicely while we were still children: ‘Winter, winter, well, so what, if it’s winter it’s not a lion; winter, winter, let it be, it is not feared by one who is healthy!’ And that’s why we’re not afraid of that lion. All we have to do is to enjoy the wintry magic. Wheth- er we view winter through windows like a natu- ral work of art, wrapped in blankets with a cup of warm tea; whether we scream happily with children while sliding down some frozen hills on sledges... Or, for those of you with a slight- ly livelier spirit, who conquer white mountains on skis or snowboards, those of you who don’t fear wild and solitary icy peaks... We wish you a snowy, joyful winter, and for you to be healthy!

G omila sveta ispred Mu- zeja savremene umetno- sti u Beogradu (MSUB), modernistički svedenog remek-dela arhitekata Ivana Anti- ća i Ivanke Raspopović. A unutra ga čekaju brojne kolek- cije slika, vajarskih dela i radova no- vih medija, od početka 20. veka do danas.

A large crowd gathers in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade (MoCAB), the modernist, minimalist master- piece of architects Ivan Antić and Ivanka Raspopović. The confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Museum is situated, is not an oasis of peace now, but rather a place that buzzes with the mur- muring expectations of visitors and their enthusiastic exhales. The date is 20 th Oc- tober 1965 and this temple of contempo- rary artistic thought is opening its doors for the first time. The scene was similar re- cently, 52 years on, following the finished reconstruction of the museum, which last- ed a decade. The public incontrovertibly confirmed the words long since uttered

Svoju umetničku zrelost znatno su ranije ispoljili jugoslovenski slika- ri i skulptori Milo Milunović, Nadež- da Petrović, Sava Šumanović, Ivan Tabaković i mnogi, mnogi drugi, da bi im se kasnije priključili Petar Lu- barda, Krsto Hegedušić, a zatim i Mi- ća Popović, Vladimir Veličković, Ra- ša Todosijević, Marina Abramović... Sve do najsavremenijih – Zdravka Joksimovića, Mrđana Bajića i naj- mlađih, poput Milice Ružičić, svi su zastupljeni u zbirkama Muzeja. Be-

stars in the sky, from whence they seem- ingly descended on this white, almost glit- tering building, this temple of contempo- rary art, but also the public, without which there is no museum and no art. That is why the Museum was again reopened to the public, without exces- sive fanfare. The public was also consid- ered when an application was created for mobile devices as part of the“DemocrAR- Tisation”campaign, which made it possi- ble for some of MoCAB’s most important works to be made available to the pub- lic even during the building’s renovation. For its innovative approach to present- ing art, MoCAB received as many as five awards at one of the most important in- ternational festivals of creative advertis- ing, Golden Drum. Going to the Museum is a great expe- rience for foreign visitors to Belgrade as they can gain an insight into what’s go- ing on in this corner of Europe, which they may have considered as being peripher- al. The exhibition will refute such beliefs, convincing people that art from this area can keep pace with the latest trends. The more attentive visitors will note all the lo- cal peculiarities, often shaped into visual commentary on current affairs. That’s be- cause modern art does not exist without a concept and context, a definition adopt- ed long ago. Just as it is null and void un- til another pair of eyes see it, and the ob- server considers it seen. For another eight months, the pub- lic will travel through this archipelago of art from the 20 th century, stopping at its most attractive islands. It will then sail on to other worlds, guided by the vision of future curators.

all periods to date, both in this region and globally. However, this museum also inscribes a different aspect of history, a vortex of political change. The modernist tenden- cies it strove to promote faced judgement from then President Josip Broz Tito as soon as the museum opened. He saw this type of art as “worthless” and “decadent”, say- ing that anyone who “wants to deal with such paintings should do so at their own expense”. He quietly withdrew this state- ment in 1968...

Artistic maturity was expressed much earlier by such Yugoslav artists and sculp- tors as Milo Milunović, Nadežda Petrović, Sava Šumanović, Ivan Tabaković and many others, only for them to be joined later by the likes of Petar Lubarda and Krsto Hegedušić, then Mića Popović, Vladimir Veličković, Raša Todosijević, Marina Abram- ović et al., all the way to the most contem- porary – Zdravko Joksimović, Mrđan Bajić – and the youngest, like Milica Ružičić, all of whom are represented in MoCAB’s col- lections. The Golden Globe’s diamond anniversary, to be commemorated in grand style on 7 th January, sees journalists ready to award the best film and TV creations of 2017, but everything takes place under the heavy shadow of unprecedented scandals F or film lovers, filmmakers and all those who have anything to do with cinematography or simply adore it, January is the time when jitters, expectancy and hope emerge. This is the time when the Golden Globes, which the association of foreign journalists have awarded in Hollywood since 1943, opens the awards season in the film world. On 7 th January, the Globes will be awarded for the 75 th time, so Hollywood is already prepar- ing for the spectacle. Still, the year behind us saw the film industry marked by some- thing that has nothing to do with film. Un- precedented scandals, the unravelling of producers and actors, accusations, rejec- tions, the cancelling of projects etc. A hor- rible picture of Hollywood, such that the awarding of the Globes will inevitably be darkened by its shadow. Nevertheless, such a major anniver- sary is not celebrated every day, so there should be a return to art. This is the right time to look back, through technicolour and black and white images, through the faces of award-winning greats... Since it was founded in 1943 by a small group of foreign journalists seeking better access to Hollywood, the Association of Foreign Journalists in Hollywood (HFPA) has grown and become the institution behind one of the most glamorous award ceremonies in the United States. Today it numbers around 90 members, including journalists from fa- mous publications, with others contributing to lesser-known media. Thus, the associa- tion includes a former Russian bodybuilder who became an actor, a former Miss World beauty queen from South Africa and a for- mer Egyptian engineer. The Golden Globes help focus atten- tion on films that might be missed by evalu- ators of the American Academy of Film Arts, which awards the Oscars. Journalists tend to award stars, so their assessments differ from those of critics and industry profes- sionals. Apart from that, the Globe also dif- fers from its older brother, Oscar, in that the award ceremony is actually a relaxed par- ty. The biggest stars of film and TV sit at ta-

bles, nibble snacks, sip drinks, stroll around and greet others, take selfies, all in all, a re- laxed atmosphere, unlike the somewhat rig- id one at the Kodak. - The Golden Globe gets great publicity in principle, and the division of films by genre into two main categories, drama and com- edy, which encompass within them awards for film, acting and so on, is slowly begin- ning to lose its significance as a pacemak- er award for the Oscars and to build its own identity. Actors can thereby receive awards for comedy creations, for example, and are not ignored just because they did not en- gage in heavy dramatic content – we are told by renowned dramatist, screenwriter, actor and film critic Dimitrije Vojnov. By introducing special categories for comedies and musicals, the Golden Globe also introduced much greater opportuni- ties to evaluate popular and commercially successful films and as such, according to our interlocutor, stars have a much higher chance of receiving awards. -TheGoldenGlobedoesn’tavoidaward- ing people whose fame is at its peak, and not when it’s already too late – says Vojnov. Moreover, there are awards for tele- vision productions and not just films, and since 1952 it has presented the award that is the dearest to actors – the one for lifetime achievement. It is named after its first recip- ient - director and producer Cecil B. DeMille - and those returning home over the years with a Globe in this category have includ- ed Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor, Clint Eastwood, Sofia Loren, Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese et al. It is not uncommon for acting greats to use these moments to announce to the public some important truth about them- selves. That was done by Jodie Foster in 2013, when she revealed her sexual ori- entation. The focus of this year’s Golden Globes was hijacked by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, who came together at the award ceremony nearly 20 years af- ter Titanic... This stage has been used by many to present their political views. Mer- yl Streep shook America at the last Globes with a fiery political speech. But also Don- ald Trump himself, who she was speaking out against, and who found it appropriate to respond offensively to her on Twitter... Many critics agreed that the last Golden Globe Awards was a three-hour programme that boiled down to a critique of American society and the presidential elections. We are certain that the next ceremony will be no less critical, because Hollywood is still trying to recover from the biggest scandal in its history – Harvey Weinstein. Or at least it started with him, before continuing with Kevin Spacey...

Nadmašio ga je La-la lend, koji je prošle godine otišao u istoriju sa sedam Globusa The first film to win all five of the most important categories for which it was nominated was One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It was only surpassed last year by La La Land, which entered into history by winning seven Globes
